I made a couple of mistakes that I want to try to correct here. Mike Corbett and Rich Koski made the tournament easy for me. I wish I had given them props at the Players' meeting. Mike organized the pre-reg and the lunch and the raffle like a professional promoter. Rich's contribution was huge. He designed the stellar colored disc for the trophies, the score cards and dyed so many discs. He organized the am payout and handled the disc order and spent the day making sure people could get one of a kind dyed discs. These guys were and are invaluable to tournaments in Modesto.

Hi John,
Thanks for posting the CVS Xmas open results so quickly on disctribution.com! :D
Can you remind me how ties work for CVS overall points? Looks like I got the short end of the stick in Masters for being tied in 2nd place. I think both players get the same score if tied. And if a tie-break is needed, I ended up winning the 2nd place trophy in play-off. But I think both Mike and I get 95 pts. Then I think Harold and Ray get 85 each, since they also tied... But if you could pass along the policy, I'd appreciate it.
Have a Merry Christmas!
Steve

Don't expect the trophy to be the tie-breaker; ties will be broken at the finals.
As for the tourney, I thought it was awesome. Sunny weather kept me warm, as well as the many layers I wore.
I thought the rounds ran smoothly and we finished before the sun set. That's not easy to run a tourney on basically the shortest day of the year.
Hope everyone that tried it liked the baklava!!
Mitch Carbone with the only ace: #18.
V-town Throwdown is next on the list for the CVS.

Dec 26 2008, 03:49 PM
Hi Kenny,
Sorry if I was confusing. I meant to say that ties need to be dealt with so points can be awarded at the end of each single tournament. Whether players with tied scores get the same point value OR get an average of all the points they tied for--makes no difference to me. But one system must be used to determine point totals, and that needs to be done prior to the finals so players can see where they stand. I know my participation in at least one event will be based on whether I feel I can upgrade in points or not.... :D
Since this comes up every season, it would be nice to have some CVS standard 'system' that is agreed to prior to the start of the season, and then post it somewhere so all players have access to it. I think the CVS TDs should agree on a system prior to next season and then post it on a couple of message boards in October 2009.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! See you at V-town.

So Kevin Randall wins Pro Masters in Hanford and gets 100 points in Pro Grand Masters? There was not Pro Grand Master division in Hanford so how can he get points for that division? That doesn't follow any logic that I can see. Can some one explain this?
JohnLambert
Feb 05 2009, 03:55 AM
From what I could tell from the results sheets given to me by the TD, Kevin played in the Grandmasters division by himself. Although, because he was by himself, he played with a group of Masters. Therefore, according to the TD, Kevin wins his division. Although I'm not really sure how legit a one man division is, I don't think it's my place to challenge the TD's decision.
I couldn't agree more that all TD's should talk and iron out some rules, or regulations, if rules is too harsh of a word. :p
pterodactyl
Feb 05 2009, 10:53 AM
Ray Birch, who took 2nd to Kevin in Masters, didn't even know he won or anything about White Trash being in another division.
In an earlier tourney (Taft, I believe) Kevin was again the only GM and had to play Masters (which he won and got points for Masters). Totally inconsistant scoring going on in this series. It's embarrassing. :o
Teemac
Feb 05 2009, 03:49 PM
So are we going to let it slide? Just do nothing? I don't think we should let the scoring go one way earlier in the season and then do it differently later in the season. I know there isn't anything written, but it has been understood that there has to be enough players (4 or at least 3) to make a division. I think awarding White Trash points for a division that isn't represented at a tournament is unfair to those who earned their points against players from that division. There has been plenty of times when older players play in a younger division because there were not enough to make a division. Ask Mike Corbett. Controversy is the last thing we want when we play disc golf tournaments and nobody wants to create hard feelings, but I believe that in fairness to all we should try to correct this inconsistency this season.
JohnLambert
Feb 05 2009, 09:44 PM
Well I think Ed should be talked to. The only thing I do is input the points based on what the TD gives me.
I did create a list of ideas for some rules at http://www.disctribution.com/forums/showthread.php?t=596 check it out, print it out, change things, and bring your own version to the TD meeting at finals. If enough TD's sign off on the rules we can have something set in stone for next year. As far as this year, it's possible to retroactively fix all the points ties, divisional points issues, etc. But we have no arbitrator, and no rules to refer to if someone has an issue with fixes.

Hey John, I saw the proposed rules and think you gave us a good starting point. Some things will change but we have to start somewhere. I talked to Mike Corbett and he said I should bring it to Guido's attention and see what he thinks. Thanks for framing the rules and I especially like the point about fliers.

So Kevin Randall wins Pro Masters in Hanford and gets 100 points in Pro Grand Masters? There was not Pro Grand Master division in Hanford so how can he get points for that division? That doesn't follow any logic that I can see. Can some one explain this?
There is no logic and it would be downright unfair if the points go towards a division that did not exist at that tournament. My guess is that is was requested to the TD without being discussed thoroughly with EVERYBODY who has a stake.

I think the CVS should have some rules--but only where they are exceptions to what we normally do for sanctioned PDGA events. I think it is fairly standard that you need at least 3 players to make a division (the exception, in some cases, has been for women). If your division has <3 players, then you play in the next level or you get a refund. End of story.
I also noticed in the overall points standings that it is the number of tournaments you attend, irrespective of division, that counts towards your total. I think this is the way it should be. So, for example, if you play MPM 3 times and MPO 2 times, you've met the minimum of 5 tournaments to qualify for the finals. Then the player chooses which division to play in the finals. They will have no chance of winning the overall, but they can still win cash on the day of the finals. And yes, it is true that their "tax" was not strictly given to one division, so the finals payout would favor one division and not the other. But that's a small difference, and I think there will be few people that fall into this category.
I'll check out the rule suggestions submitted by John.
Cheers,
Steve

I think this is a great idea.

From my experience it always ends up the TD's decision in the end. I'm not sure I quite agree with a division of 1, but Ed pretty much was on his own. I think having centralized rules will help resolve this.
One the other hand I kind of think not offering some divisions may discourage players at smaller tournaments already struggling to fill with players (south valley tournaments).
It'll be interesting to see the differences in opinions on these rules and how everything will work out.

Hey Kenny!
Looking forward to tackling Stockton tomorrow! What is the course set-up like? Similar to last year? And how about the 2 extra holes?
I hope it's not too windy... :D

Hey Running Man,
The course will be set up relatively easy for the CVS. There will be no combined holes like the Frying Pan will have and has had in the past. The alternates will be between 9 and 10. First extra launches from the nature path to a slightly wooded area. For the next hole you shoot to the fire pit (short). It should have nice flow, not to mention the flow from the Sierra Nevada keg I ordered yesterday that will be tapped after the tourney...cheers, KL

Another tourney in the books.
Thank you, Steve Lonhart, for all of your help in the scoring department for The Winterjam and all of the other CVS venues. You are a big asset to the cause.
I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and the fine weather we had on Saturday.
I'm glad that it's over and I think I only have a couple more tournaments to run before I call it quits (Frying Pan '09 and CVS Finals '10).
