MIT solves 100-year-old engineering problem

FTA:
For example, picture air flowing around, over and past an object. "Instead of flowing smoothly past the object, the air tends to dramatically part from the surface, or separate," said Peacock. Like the wake behind a boat, the water doesn't automatically reconfigure into a single stream. Rather, the region is quite turbulent. "And that adversely affects the lift [or vertical forces] and drag [or horizontal forces] of the object."

If I'm not mistaken there have been some interesting discs released over the last few years already, with dimple and surface technology as well as the over molded discs.
I'm guessing if your read over the published document you will see the improvements are made on the surface as well as the shape!!

also,,,
I think the one thing people tend to forget when it comes to the aerodynamics of a golf disc is that it is spinning unlike a planes wing, a cars spoiler or boat rudder!

MIT students and faculty would have a lot of work to do if they chose to break down what makes the golf discs work!!

If you want to find some interesting reading look for information on unmanned aircraft with gyroscopic propulsion!
Its the closest thing to a discs flight that I have ever read! There were a few articles published on work NASA and Boeing were doing in this field and than all of a sudden it vanished!

Dimple technoology was on disc in the 80's!!!! It was not an innovation. Just that most people forgot about the dimple disc of the past.

I never forgot,,,,, they were the CDS (circular displacement system) and "the dimple disc" ( most of them stamped with Grateful dude).

It was as if they made a few prototypes and never really developed the product for disc golf, both discs were rock hard and would not flex.
I have spoken with Jan Sobel of Destiny discs quite a few times about there molds but never really seemed to get anywhere. according to him there wasn't a golf disc market.

I'm pretty sure that the type of dimples and placemments were not improvements to existing discs of that day, but I liked the shape of the DUDE and still feel it would make a nice beginner disc with the right materials!

Destiny Discs seemed to have problems developing the right polymers in these discs to get them PDGA approved. So these 2 were never pdga approved and most likely why they never gained much attention or demand.

In my opinion there's a LOT MORE to dimple and surface technology than just putting dimples all over the surface like in those 2 discs.
The type of dimple and the placement of dimples is the technology, combined with the shape and feel of the disc. ( same goes fo r surface technology like the rougher surface on the leading edge and under wing of the Assassin, Inferno, etc..)

I feel it's pretty safe to say there's a lot of room left for new innovation in the dimple and surface technology field for golf discs!

Yes yes. I almost retracted my comment after I wrote it :)

The grateful Dude. I actually saw a beginner playing with one the other day. He said it was his dad's disc.

And you are right about dimple technology, your discs are quite a bit different. Those old discs sure are stiff. And yes, keep on developing. I love how Gateway keeps pushing forward with new designs. The T-bone (even though I don't carry one) is one of the nicest flying discs I have thrown in a long time. If I didn't already throw the Coyote, I would probably put it in my bag.

.............

And as for the Monarch, it does bring back the days of the Dolphin and the Hammerhead. The hammerhead was a crazy disc with such a thick flight plate in the middle. Does the Monarch float? I know that the Dolphin did, and I thought the Hammerhead did as well. The Monarch however is totally different in feel as the weight of the Monarch seems to be really unbalanced to me. It just doesn't feel like other discs. They fly nice, but it is just not weighted right and feels awkward in my hand. I wonder how long it will last?

man if you are comparing a t-bone ( basically an assassin with dimples) to a coyote, you might want to check them out again.
I don't think they are anything a like and certainly not used for the same kind of shots.
Players are throwing Assassins as far as anything made for golf shots, coyotes are only average distance flyers for mid ranges.

thanks for the encouragement, we will have some new discs coming out over the next month or so, first a small bead Wizard, a more blunt nosed midrange and then 3 new long winged drivers!

Always excited to hear about new equipment. I was tempted to ask in your thread about new drivers on the horizon. You have any details about the new designs you'd be willing to share.

A wing a little longer than the assassin and about the same rim depth to go with 3 different tops, hopefully understable, stable and overstable!

I love my assiasin but have yet tried to throw it for big D. I find that with a light toss it's one of the most controllable straight discs I carry. Just something about it really works for me with a light toss. Tickled chains for a near tourney ace this weekend with it.
