I just started using a content management system, CMS, to organize content on my website, DiscGolfAddiction.com.
I got some hosting through a hosting company called Verio and uploaded the latest version of Joomla onto my Unix based server. I am not much of a web developer, but this FREE software is a real time saver. I also see several other sites (http://memphisdiscgolf.com ) that are using Joomla and I hope I can make my site as good as theirs.
Give Joomla a try and post your link here so I can check it out. I like to see the different ways that clubs organize and present their web content. If anyone can think of anything to suggest for my site then email me.
Joomla can be downloaded at www.joomla.org (http://www.joomla.org)

www.carrolltonopen.com (http://www.carrolltonopen.com) is joomla. I built this site over two years ago and have never had a problem with it... although there are now better alternatives to joomla, IMHO :)
give drupal a look. Serve is good, too.

oh, BTW - Mambo was the original project that evolved into two separate projects, Mambo and Joomla. So, if you've used Mambo then Joomla is an easy jump. I built at least a dozen sites on Mambo before Joomla split off.

is the php source easy to load up into my space at my hosting company (bluedomino.com)? mysql/php are already there.

pretty easy, yeah... but you'll almost definitely need shell access, or at least full FTP access. some hosting companies can deploy the CMS for you

Joomla was on our short list, but Drupal won, due to two main factors:
1. Nicely integrated support for user roles, allowing us (eventually) easy and flexible control over access to different parts of the site based on user status (non-current members, current members, tournament directors, staff, etc.).
2. A very nicely designed platform and infrastructure. The model Drupal uses to extend the core features is very slick and leverages PHP nicely. This has led to a large community of open source developers and third party modules, which we will be leveraging extensively in the new site.
We're getting close to launch!

A tad off-topic Theo, but have you found a module for user avatars? I can't seem to find that anywhere. :(

www.iplaydiscgolf.com (http://www.iplaydiscgolf.com) will be based off of Drupal
Pretty sure www.flyingdiscmagazine.com (http://www.flyingdiscmagazine.com) is Drupal
www.bgdgclub.com (http://www.bgdgclub.com) is an obvious joomla site
so is www.discontinuum.org (http://www.discontinuum.org)
www.cincinnatidiscgolf.com (http://www.cincinnatidiscgolf.com) is DotNetNuke
www.1000rated.com (http://www.1000rated.com) uses Wordpress - www.wordpress.org (http://www.wordpress.org)
so does www.dgwn.com (http://www.dgwn.com)
We have a dream of developing www.discgolfwebdesign.com (http://www.discgolfwebdesign.com) into a free resource that TD's and Clubs can use to download, install, and learn to use CMS systems. If anyone is interested in helping with endeavor please e-mail us at 1000rated@gmail.com

I still have a hosting 3000 plan that is sitting idle. When I master MySQL this week and start php programming I think i will contribute more to the web development side.
These are great examples of disc golf sites. I cant wait to start parsing their XHTML.
This is all new to me, but I am encouraged that there are other disc golf web site developers out there.

Oh, BTW,
Check out this free WYSIWYG editor!
Great for doing template backups.

Glad to see you're finally getting together.

fwiw - I've implemented and administered most of these and wordpress or drupal would be my first choices.
Joomla/Mambo are ok, but a bit behind the curve. DotNetNuke/PHPNuke are both a complete nightmare which I've always had to 'hack' into anything useful and even still its clunky.
Simple Machines (SMF) is halfway decent as a simple portal/forum system.

Pat,
Glad to see someone in disc golf running a rocket theme template. They are by far one of the best Joomla template providers out there.

Why spend time running or paying for a Web server that has PHP and MySQL, or downloading and installing software? (Thanks, Pat!)
If your club or course needs a free website to post information on, with functionality that includes sending email to club members as a group, wants to use an online calendar to promote events, and to do so in an environment already attracting nearly 20,000 disc golf visitors a month, then it can do so without any fees or payments (free) at Disc Golf's Virtual Clubhouse, www.DiscGolfersR.us (http://www.discgolfersr.us). And you don't need to do any programming or have any special technical skills.
Just join DGRUS (we never share your email address with anyone) and create a Club, then put tournaments in the Calendar, post pictures, all sorts of fun, social things.
P.S. Retailers of any size are also welcome to create a "My Bag" identity for their business, and even a Club.

Pat,
A few other joomla template providers that seem to be at the forefront of both design and functionality:
http://www.joomlajunkie.com/
http://www.gavick.com/ (Robert Gavick)
http://www.joomlamarket.de/
http://www.pixelsparadise.com/ (Holger Koenemann)
http://www.joomlart.com (http://www.joomlart.com/templates_demo.php?template=ja_sanidine)
The last one is joomlart.com - and their personal site is fairly boring (which is why the link goes straight to one of their templates) but they have developed some real nice templates based on the fireboard plugin and community builder plugin for joomla. A great way to develop a top notch site for disc golfers with both a forum and homepage login access.
And of course - as stated before...
