"If an NHL player is in the zone and doesn't shoot the puck, it either means the goalie has perfect position or he can't see all the way to the goal."

- Versus play by play man and TV voice of the Carolina Hurricanes, John Forsland.

What a waste of a President's Cup...although the only game I've seen was the one they actually one. For some reason, Versus has blacked out the other three games due to broadcast restrictions. I live in neither San Jose or Anaheim so I am confused as to what the decision was to black the game out.

I don't buy that as 100% truth, sometimes it's just time to throw a hope and a prayer on net and see what happens.

At any rate, LET'S GO PENS!!!!!! I sure wasn't looking forward to a game 7 about 1 minute into the second, sure glad Fluery turned it on and Sid came through when we needed him most.

Most amazing thing I've ever seen in hockey.

I agree, thought he should have been suspended for that hit. You could see him put his leg out to catch him on the knee, at the very least it should have been a major. If it would have been someone like Sean Avery they would have been suspended for sure.

Wanna play rough? The Blackhawks can take the punishment and can dish it out as well.

Wanna play pretty? The Blackhhawks are younger and faster than your team. Hav e you seen the replays of Kaner's hat trick to close out the Canucks?

wanna play tight checking, dump and chase and rely on the goal keepers? The Blackhawks still have the rights to the Bulin wall for the rest of the playoffs. He is, of course, auditioning to be your team's keeper next year. For now, he's ours. If he gets injured, we have another front line keeper sitting on the bench.

Wanna exploit your team's "expereince" over youth and inexperience? Well, lets see how well that has worked so far...

Four lines coming at you in waves with scorers, checkers, defenders and faceoff winners on every one.

Ready to drop the gloves? Here come the Hawks.

Will MTL man up for the... Avatar Challenge?

Just now reading this b/c....

1. I have 1000 things better to do than read the discussion board. I got tired of this place so just stopped getting on here other than to post stuff for tournaments.

2. I was vacation all week and the last thing I was thinking about was this terrible message board.

HOWEVER....

I would have taken the challenge so when we lose the series, I will put a Pens avatar up. I still can't figure out how to get this stupid avatar I have changed.....

Congrats to the Pens for another dominating win. Malkin is just stupid how good he is. I expect this to be over in 4.

And I picked the Pens and Wings in the Cup Finals at the START of the playoffs IN THIS THREAD, so while I would have accepted the challenge simply b/c I love my Canes, have to be honest with my picks.

So when the Pens end this, I will put up a Pens avatar for the rest of the playoffs.

Too bad Chicago will be 3rd in their own division next year. Go Jackets! From the point Mason took over in net until the end of the season: CBJ was in a dead heat with CHI for points... plus we get back the BEST OFFENSIVE ROOKIE IN THE NHL next year in Derick Brassard, and we will have the most creative offensive rookie in the league in Nikita Filatov. Home ice advantage in 09/10!

Additional names to watch for: Goloubef, Ruth, Mayorov.

Wow, when this series started I thought it was going to be the hardest one to get through....Turns out it was the easiest!!! Think we rocked them with those first 2 goals early in that first game and they never recovered. The Pens look like a much stronger team that last year, and look to be more on a mission..... Really never thought after losing last year's Cup Finals we'd make it back this year....but here we are so LET'S GO PENS!!! How cool would it be to have both of your favorite teams win the championship in the same year!!! First the Steelers, and now hopefully the Pens!!

And come on Chicago at least extend the series out a few games and beat on the Red Wings a little more.

We need Detroit to win tonight...that way the NHL will start the Stanley Cup finals this Saturday instead of waiting until June 6th. Detroit is beat up as of right now, we can't let them rest too long. Plus, if Detroit doesn't win tonight but then ends up winning game 6, the NHL won't start the finals until June 6th. That's too long of a wait for the Pens, 11 days off could be too much rest for the Pens, killing the mojo they have going right now.

And how about Crosby touching the Prince of Wales trophy? Good or Bad move?

warlocks00
May 27 2009, 11:49 AM
the NHL won't start the finals until June 6th.

Yeah, but I am leaving for the Bahamas on June 6th. I am hopeful that I will be able to find hockey on a TV somewhere there, but if not I would rather miss the start of the series than the end. I know....I know...booohooo you're going to the Bahamas. Still want to see my Pens win the Cup this year!!! ;) Plus maybe Chicago will beat up on them a little more if they extend it out. Although I'd sure like to play Detriot without DatSUCK and Lidstrom

And how about Crosby touching the Prince of Wales trophy? Good or Bad move?

When I saw them bring out that trophy last night I wondered if he would touch it. I know Mario touched it back in the 90s when the Pens won.....Sid did not touch it last year and we lost, so why not give it a try!! Maybe it's bad luck for other teams and good luck for us.

I was shocked no call was made on that.....maybe it was because they knew they missed so many calls on Detriot they let it slide. JUST KIDDING!!!! You know people on the Detriot bench had to be yelling "TO MANY MEN" and the Pens bench had to be yelling at Eaton to get off. On one of the replays I saw...it looked like right after Eaton left the ice a ref counted players, but it was to late to call it I guess since he wasn't on the ice any more at the time he counted?

Like one of the Pens said in the post game interviews....some of the breaks went our way this time!

Alex is a Go-Go for the Penguins.

By agreeing Tuesday to a three-year deal worth $5.5 million, defenseman Alex Goligoski will not become a restricted free agent on July 1. His new contract was announced by the club on Wednesday.

"Honestly, I'm just happy we got it done early," Goligoski said while driving from Pittsburgh to his summer home in Minnesota. "I know the season just ended, but I can't wait for training camp. This shows how much confidence they have in me."

Goligoski, 23, will count $1.833 million against the NHL's salary cap every season on the deal. The cap for next season is expected to be near the $56.7 million total from the recently wrapped campaign.

The Penguins will be near that total, with $35.15 million committed to centers Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby and Jordan Staal; defensemen Brooks Orpik and Sergei Gonchar; and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

Gonchar, 35, will become an unrestricted free agent next summer, and the Penguins have made securing the long-term services of him, Goligoski, Kris Letang among their top offseason priorities.

Letang, 22, will become a restricted free agent on July 1, 2010.

The Penguins will open discussions regarding long-term extensions for him and Gonchar on July 1-- and they are optimistic of reaching terms before year's end.

General manager Ray Shero could not be reached for comment. He was on a flight to Las Vegas with team personnel, and Malkin and Crosby. Those two players are finalists for year-end individual honors at the NHL Awards Show.

Goligoski impressed Shero in several ways last season.

Because of season-opening injuries to Gonchar and Ryan Whitney, he appeared in 45 games through Feb. 2. Goligoski led defensemen with six goals and 20 points at the time of his return to AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Despite only a year of professional experience, Goligoski was not out of place on the Penguins' two power-play unit during Gonchar's absence.

Shero said then that Goligoski's minor-league stint was because the Penguins owned eight defensemen with NHL experience, and seven with one-way contracts.

"We know he can play at this level," Shero said at the time of Goligoski's demotion in February. "That's not the issue."

The Penguins' faith in Goligoski's long-term future was evident by their willingness to trade Whitney on Feb. 26 -- sending a prized 26-year-old puck-moving defenseman to Anaheim for winger Chris Kunitz and prospect Eric Tangradi.

While at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Goligoski scored twice and recorded 18 points in 26 games, and, according to former Penguins assistant general manager Chuck Fletcher, also handled himself in a professional manner.

After recording six points in nine Calder Cup playoff games, Goligoski returned to the Penguins and played in two Stanley Cup playoff games during the second round against Washington because Gonchar was out with a knee injury.

He will enter training camp in September with a firm slot among a top six that will include Gonchar, Orpik, Letang and Mark Eaton. Two regulars from last season -- Rob Scuderi and Hal Gill -- are unrestricted free agents on July 1 and unlikely to be retained by the cap-strapped Penguins.

Goligoski is confident he will help soften the blow of those potential losses.

"I know all the guys, so I'll be very comfortable in the room and on the ice," he said. "There is a pretty high standard with this team. You're talking about the Stanley Cup champions, but I feel like I can bring something to the team that can maybe help us repeat."

I don't mind Gill leaving, I mean he is a big guy that can move people from the front of the net...but he's just sooooo slow.

Scuderi on the other hand.....man I sure hope he is back!!!! We need his defensive style and unreal stick and shot blocking skills back there. Maybe he'll give the Pens a discount to stay like Orpik did last year.

The other two I hope stay are Guerin(at a reduced salary) and Fedotenko, and I'd really like to see Adams stay as well.

I know we can't keep them all, especially with the money that will be thrown at them because they are STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS, but we need to keep some of those free agents.

Well bye bye Scudari and Gill...thanks for bringing the Cup to Steeltown, now have fun losing in LA and Toronto next season!

Anybody in Pens country see much of the 'baby pens', interested to hear what people's opinion is on Ben Lovejoy?

Just saw they did sign Fed to a 1 year deal for less money than he made last year. That makes him and Geurin both taking less to stay!

Now will Sykora stay?

1st) Yes, there are alot of people interested in Hockey.(real sports fans watch, as stated ,The greatest team sport EVER!)

2nd) No the pens will not make it a three in a row. I believe two in a row with all the extra games well into June will start to take a toll on them.

Jackets moved to 3-1-0 yesterday. Including 2-1 on a brief left coast swing. Wait, the Jackets are winning games on the road? Looks like a good year to come. Additionally - after a quick two game breather back at Nationwide Arena they're heading back out west for another four games. This means no more time spent out in the western time zone until January (3 games) and March (3 games). All out of the way early, and doing it fresh may be a good thing.

Jackets go to 4-1-0 behind strong goaltending, constant pressure in the Calgary zone, and a power play goal by Stralman! Rick Nash picks up two more assists, he has 8 points in 5 games and is scoring points like we all knew he could with a solid team around him. Admittedly: Calgary looked very tired after a long game in Chicago last night, but hell a win is a win and Columbus never let them have a chance.

Additionally: two quick whistles kept the game from being 4-1. The game was more lopsided than the score showed. TWICE Mikka Kiprusoff attempted to cover the puck and failed only to allow the rebound to be pounded home. TWICE a whistle was blown far too quickly by Stephen Walkom. Mr Walkom - go back to your cozy office, the game is too fast for you to think you can come back and ref at the top level of hockey after 4+ years away from it.

Have I mentioned yet that the Jackets are 5-1-0? Not even I thought I'd be posting about their wins this often! Go Jackets! I'm calling a nice 2-1-1 record on this west coast swing - after which their toughest west coast stretch of the year will be OVER!!! 7 of 9 games out west. And they'll come through that stretch sitting about 7-2-1 by my prediction.

With as high as my cable bill is, especially during football and hockey season, I think they should be making enough to cover it...but what can I really do, only way to see all the Steeler games, and most of the Pens games is to have Directv.

I didn't even have to click the thread to know that the latest post would be about that. Oh well, we pummeled them 8-2 last year and look what good it did us in the playoffs. :P

With all honesty we haven't been playing Ken Hitchcock hockey this year. Mason is still looking good but he's getting peppered with really great scoring opportunities from opposing teams. We're turning the puck over in our own zone, we're not clearing out the front of the net... Luckily our scorers have really matured (though it doesn't help Raffi's face was WRECKED by a puck last night).

Well, we won tonight, and with a good performance that saw us limiting the easy scoring chances. Still let 34 shots on net but kept the legit chances to a minimum. I hope that shellacking by the Wings woke them up and made them realize that they need to play Hitchcock's slow-it-down style.

Not much better reason than that.....

Hard to really compare the 2 as far as players on the ice. They have such different styles of play. Sid can send a puck through a hole(passing or shooting) that will amaze you. While Ovie can just over power you with his shots and blow them by you before you know they were even coming.

To me, and of course being a Pens fan I might not be as objective as others, I'd say Sid cause he's more of a complete player. Takes a lot more responsiblity to play center vs. winger.

Without Crosby the NHL would definitely not be what it is today. As a 18 year old kid, to be the face of an entire professional sports league takes a strong minded person. Crosby is on the cup because of Malkin (may be a mispelling). Nothing aginst the Kid, but Malkin, IMO, was the reason they won last year. MALKIN IS A BEAST!.

Good point about beeing the face of the league and there's no doubt that Crosby is a better passer, but Ovechkin is the single best scorer and playmaker in the NHL.

No way he is more complete...Yes he is a much more prolific offensive player. But I'll take Crosby on both ends of the ice.
Does Ovie take faceoffs?
Does he have the responsiblity Crosby does on the ice?

The answer is NO.
If Sid played only on the wing( I know ovie plays on the point on the pp and Sid would not be a good fit there) he'd be a bigger offensive threat....but he's gotta play D to.

Really to me it's hard to compare the 2 becasue they are such different players. A closer comparision would be Malkin and Olvechkin.

Good point there. Can't argue with that one. I guess I just like big bruisers that can score. The only thing I don't like about Ovie is that he is Russian.

I've been reluctant to trust the Russians ever since this happened to my home town in the 80's ...

The Columbus Bluejackets just lost their 14th straight game in Nashville. Or maybe better said the last 14 trips to Nashville to play the Predators the Blue Jackets lost!
Longest current streak in NHL.

It was not much of an offensive game with a 1 0 - overtime win for Nashville, but still the B'J's are snake bit in Smashville.

What a great last regular season night at the Igloo! How about all those old Pens Stars coming out on the ice one last time!!!

What a great way to end the regular season at the Igloo last night. Would anyone like to tell their favorite memory of the Mellon Arena? Mine would have to be attending Sesame Street on Ice...Actually it would be attending all the Penguin vs. Flyer Playoff Games!!!

warlocks00
Apr 09 2010, 12:33 PM
Well I've only got 2 memories from the Igloo, but I imagine it's more than most people from West Texas.

1st game I attended was the Pens vs. the Blue Jackets. Think it might have been the BJs first season. I had seen about 4-6 Pens vs. Stars games in Big D by this time, but have never seen a win. Saw some ties, even a 0-0 tie, but mostly loses. So I got to see my first Pens win live at Mellon Areana.

My 2nd memory was the last game we went to up there, Pens vs. Carolina This, I think was the year after they went to the finals. We got stomped in that game, but I will never forget talking to the guy next to me: He asked where I was from, told him West Texas...San Angelo to be exact. Asked him where he was from he said Toronto. He asked why I was in Pittsburgh, and I told him I was there to mainly see a Steeler game, but couldn't pass up on a chance to see the Pens play either. He asked are you not a cowboy fan, told him no and explained my hatered for them. He then asked what would you say if I told you I had a cowboy beltbuckle on. Told him I would say I feel sorry for him(in a joking way), he stood up and I'll be darn if I didn't travel a thousand+ miles to get away from cowboy fans just to be sitting next to one from Canada at a Pens game in the Burg. Crazy thing is I ran back into these 2 guys as we pulled into a parking garage heading to the Steeler game the next day. They just happened to be walking by at that exact time and were not even going to the game. What are the odds......

Hoping to make it back to Pittsburgh this fall to see the new arena and of course see a Steeler game. Also hoping to get to play a round this time while we are there.

What a game #7 last night between the Caps and Habs! I was LMAO when the game came to an end and the camera kept showing all the fans with their depressing looks on their faces.
That was the biggest upset I've seen in the NHL playoffs! The Caps had around 40 more points and over 100 goals more than Montreal in the regular season. Goes to show...the playoffs and the regular season are two completely different styles of play...without defense and goaltending you're nothing!

The blame lies not on Washington's defense and goalie, but on a Caps offense which last went consecutive games with less than two goals in October of 2008! The Caps scored only one goal in games 5-7.

Let's also give credit to Montreals goalie Halak, and hope that he doesn't play so strong against the vaunted Pittsburgh offense.

Warlock...I'm highly disappointed in this decision!!!! Granted I hate Hossa for not staying with the Pens because he thought he could win in Detroit. But, we've already got our revenge on that matter. If the Cryers win the Cup we'll have to listen to them ..... for an entire year. I don't think I could deal with that.

I hope you can change your mind. It's a tough decision but for the love of all that's holy...don't let the Cryers win! I hope they get swept in the Finals! Actually, I hope Montreal comes back and wins the Eastern Conference!!!

I'd love to see Hossa make the finals and lose every year until he retires! If he wouldn't have left Pittsburgh maybe we win the cup again this year...or who knows maybe we lose last year to Detroit again. At any rate I'll never go for him to win the Cup. Now I'd love to see Patrick Kane win the Cup...I really like watching that kid!

Actually, I hope Montreal comes back and wins the Eastern Conference!!!

Let's hope for this out come....would make my choice a whooooole lot easier. Trust me, the worst out come for me when this started was Chicago vs. Philly or Washington(or really even the Devils).

Kurtp, See it's hard for you to go for Philly...well because you have probably hated them your whole life, but also because I promise you there are more of their fans around you than are around me. So I won't hear it much. But if the West wins I have to hear about how much better the west is...even though the stars didn't make the playoffs, from all my Star fan buddies. If Philly wins I hate who won, but I still get to say the Atlantic is the strongest division in hockey.

So for now...GO MONTREAL!!!!

Well....sooo long to Gonchar!

It was a good run...but now you are the enemy!

chainmeister
Jul 02 2010, 11:35 AM
and the salary cap reality is now becoming clear. The Blackhawks have already lost seven players - Versteeg, Byfuglien, Ladd, Sopol, Burish, Fraiser, Eager. A lot of goals but mostly a lot of toughness. On paper they are already a softer team. They still have to agree to terrms with Niemi while carrying way too much salary for Huet. He may go to the AHL affiliate which will allow them to waste the money on Huet without wasting capped money. the Cup run was great and reality is around the corner. There will be no favorite next year. There will be more than a half dozen very good teams and no great one.

So, who will the Pens use to replace Gonchar on the blue line?

warlocks00
Jul 05 2010, 02:08 PM
Well, I am not to familiar with the 2 D-men the Pens picked up, but I don't think either of them would fill that role. So I'd say either Letang or Goligoski will take Gonchar's place, probably Goligoski. While both are pretty skilled offensive D-men...they are no Gonchar.

And now we've lost yet another D-man I was hoping to keep in Eaton. That puts us up to 3 gone with Leopold also leaving.

kUrTp
Jul 06 2010, 10:17 AM
No Worries Warlocks...Both Martin and Michalek are great pickups. Their stats don't really show how valuable they will be but I think are Defense will be greatly improved this year because of them.
