Did Ken Climo start off using Innova discs? Did he ever use Discraft? I have only been playing a little over a year so if this has been discussed previously please point me to the thread. Thanks!

i was wondering that myself since I've heard he was playing since 95 or earlier and innova was misspelling his name up till at least 97

Ken Klimo LOL

It was a lot earlier than 95, as he had already won multiple titles by then. I'd be surprised if Innova didn't know how to spell his name. Where did you get that info from?

I think he started in 87 and whooped up on the AM guys at one event then moved up. He took 7th or something like that at his 1st worlds and then went on the streak after that.

The reason I ask is I found an old chalky Discraft Cyclone and it has a stamp that reads "Disc Golf's Fiercest Competitor" a picture of some kind of disc "creature" sporting a battleaxe and shield and below the picture it says "Ken Climo World Champion". Does anyone know about this disc and what the history is?

ken was sponsored for a long time by a company out of florida called "flying eye", they likely had the cyclones produced but to my knowledge he wasn't throwing them.

When I came to the Florida Triple Crown to play in 1989, Ken was using an Eclipse for sure.
He was raging about how good he thought it was while he was driving them over the lake on 10 at Cliff Stephens and throwing it for rollers as well!

From what I recall hearing,,,Discraft offered Ken a sponsorship before Innova ever did and then made another offer a few years after he got the sponsorship.

Climo's first disc was an old school triple ring Innova Aviar XD.

Interseting story about this particular disc. I bought a collection a few years back. In that collection was that XD with the initials KC on the bottom. I sold the disc to Super Dave Gilstrap who took it home and hung it on the wall. Neither of us knew what it was. Billy Crump saw it on the wall and on a hunch took it to Climo. Needless to say Kenny was shocked that his original disc had made it back to him. He put the disc on the table and ate dinner out of it. He then washed it off and hung it on his wall.

Why eat dinner out of it? Because after throwing that disc and learning how to play with it, the skills he learned has fed him ever since.

Like Tizzle said it is a true story. Hard to believe at first until I talked to Kenny about it.

Somehting interesting about the story and it should be a lesson for every new player is the fact that he leared to play with an XD. Mastered that and then moved onto other discs. Alot of new players should learn to throw lids and or short range discs to begin with. Too many gobble up Destroyers, Surges and X-cals and wonder why thier game never progresses past a certain point. Or they wonder why they can't throw a control turnover shot. Baby steps.

At the Worlds, before the Final 9, Kenny was in the parking lot giving a youngster a turn-over Roc lesson. Kenny was really emphasizing the"arching of the back" to the kid. It was a breakthrough for the kid and great to see that stuff happen. It still didn't stop me from getting Kenny's autograph on some sweet worlds discs. If you haven't seen Kenny's sig., he uses his pdga # and incorporates his 12X into it.

Unfortunately it's that male masculine mindset that keeps them from trying understable, lightweight discs, and a failure to understand that the player makes the player, not the disc. A disc is simply just a device used to play, no matter what it is or what company it is.

I've been saying this for years, however learning to throw lids and short range putters will show any flaws in the players technique. And that is the time to correct the problem before moving up to more advanced discs like midrange and putters.

Funny, Ken told me his first golf disc was an Innova Coupe. This was said back in 1990, the first year of the Augusta Disc Golf Classic - he was traveling with Valencia, who wasn't yet exclusively Discraft.

Not that it adds anything to the history discussion, here's the story from #17 at Winthrop last year as KC deuced the hole three times in a row:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQa273cL084

I know Dave Feldberg played a conservative lay-up on this one each round. Just wondering if he'll adopt a more aggressive approach this year. I'm guessing KC will keep on deucing.

Folks interested in bringing DG to their local access station, give me a shout. Our Broadcast DVDs are always free.

Is there anyone out there from Flying Eye that can give some history on this? I would take it as Ken's first World Champion title for the occasion of printing these disc. Does anyone have an Eclipse with this printing?

I met the guy who started Flying Eye at the SNPC in Mobile 2 years ago, he went on and on about how he was the main sponsor for Kenny back when he was just starting out.

Not sure about the exact disc, but he said they did make disc for Stamped for Kenny.

If you ever met the guy hold on to your seat, because you will be there for a while. He was very proud that he was the main force behind sponsoring Kenny back in the day, according to him.....

Sometimes its just a comfort thing. There are times when I feel more comfortable going to a straddle for a short to medium putt if I'm feeling, physically, below standard on a particular day.

Near as I can tell, this hole is never the same twice...

I'm not sure when it was aced by KC, but I think for several years the tee was at a different angle, more towards where old #16 used to finish up. The straighter shot over the green towards the water is fairer for both lefties and righties now. Or rather, dreaded more equally by both.
