I'm very pleased to announce that TitleDISC has been offered the opportunity to bring you this year's Alex Clark Memorial DG Tournament!
The City of McKinney and the Clark family have been having this tournament for several years now and I have personally played in almost every one. This year, I get to sit on the other side of the table and I'm happy to do so. We are currently hashing out details and working on getting everything together, but I wanted to let the message board know as far in advance as possible that this tournament is a go again for 2008.
TitleDISC is committed to honoring Alex's memory and supporting this charity. We hope to give more this year than has ever been given before. We are also sanctioning the tournament this year to give the players and even better DG experience.
The format will be one day (November 8th), two rounds, at Alex Clark Memorial DG Course. We will use the extended format (at least 21 holes) playing the long tees for the first round and shorts the second, with the exception of the Rec divisions, who will play the shorts both rounds.
Sponsorship packages are available using the same structure that TitleDISC has used all year: $100 teesign - $150 teeshirt - $250 mini-disc. More sponsorship info to come soon but I can say that we already have Phil and Jessica Clark sponsoring this event with leads on a few others. Not only do I expect this event to fill, but I expect the sponsorship spots to sell out as well.
Please stay tuned to this board and to TitleDISC.com for more information. I should mention that I'm out of town on business right now so I've been slow to answer some emails, but I will be back tomorrow for the MJCO. I will have plenty of info available about the Alex Clark Memorial event this weekend, so please feel free to ask.

I'm going to be opening up registration for this one soon. Here are a few updates -
I received a merchandise sponsorship from Bryan James (MJCO). Phil and Jessica have sponsored with cash. The City of McKinney has committed to at least 100 plates of food, meaning that LUNCH IS FREE for this tournament. That is a big deal! No leaving the course to find food, no losing your parking place. Just hang out, eat, digest, then back to golf! It also means that we can have a little bit shorter lunch break and will more easily finish our rounds in the daylight.
There WILL be a cap of 100 players for this tournament. Also, this year's event is primarily a fundraiser event. All proceeds go to the Clark family, for contribution to whatever charity they see fit, in Alex's memory. My goal is to take every penny that this tournament can generate and give it to the charity. I hope you will also buy some of my cool TitleDISC gear while you're there :).
Payout will be good, lunch and t-shirts will be free, everyone (with a PDGA number) will get ratings and points, and we will get to play some golf on one of the nicest courses in North Texas. This year's Alex Clark Memorial is going to be the best yet.
Tournament logo is in the works. If you want to sponsor this event, please get with me soon.

Hey Josh..Jessica and I never got our trophies from last years ACM tournament..Ben said he would mail them to us..but never did..I don't know how to get in touch with him.
baldguy
Sep 17 2008, 04:12 PM
yeah I'm looking into it. I'll give him a call soon. I dunno if those trophies are currently in existence or not. My involvement in years past has been strictly as a player and provider of online registration.
That does bring up a good question, though - are the trophies a big deal? I don't mean for last year's event... of course if promised a trophy, you should expect to receive one. I mean for this year's event: do you think I should have trophies made up or just leave that money in the payout?
haleigh
Sep 17 2008, 04:32 PM
Oh I am sure there is never going to be a trophy for last year..I just think it is crappy. I am sure he does not even remember. I think trophies are way better than payout. Plastic gets lost too easily.

no really, I have a box of trophies that I have won over the years. I only have 2 displayed.
One is from the Arkansas State Championships in '92 (1st place) It is a Bald Eagle with it's wings spread. Very nice.
And the Glass "#1 TD" trophy that I was given a few years ago by Scott at Addison Glass and Mirror.
the rest of my trophies are boxed up with my other disc golf stuff, (including an Alex Clark trophy from a few years ago, 3rd place Pro)
baldguy
Sep 19 2008, 01:37 AM
I'll have to see what I can scare up in the way of trophies, but it's kinda hard to do well unless you get a hookup like Scott or whoever does Jerry's trophies for Tyler. Unless real quality can be had for very little... it ends up taking more away from the purse than it is worth.
So... if anyone has a connection on some honestly good trophies that we can get cheap (free is good too - remember this is a charity event :D), please let me know. I will also be good to get a few more cash sponsorships in soon. The sooner I raise money, the better I can make the tournament. Lots of stuff needs to get pre-ordered and I'm not a wealthy man :(. Having sponsorship money and registration fees early in the game lets me use that money to buy better stuff for the tournament. Registration will go up tomorrow (along with VPO, two tournaments in Houston, an ace race in Denton, etc. etc. etc.).

Josh,
If you can make it out to the mini tomorrow morning at Harmony Hill I will give you my cash sponsorship then.
baldguy
Sep 19 2008, 05:40 PM
I am certainly going to try. I really appreciate the sponsorship, Shaine. Anyone else who would like to be a part of the biggest ACM ever :Dneeds to contact me soon! There are a limited number of teesigns available, and only so much room on the back of the shirts. Even though it's a C-tier, I'm still going to add cash to the Open division. If we get enough sponsorship in, I'll add to ALL divisions :)
baldguy
Sep 20 2008, 11:51 PM
I decided to wait a few more days to open up registration for the ACM, but it should be up next week.
I've decided to add another benefit to this tournament, assuming I can get it approved by the PDGA. Because the history of this event includes 7 years of unsanctioned play, I want to ease it into sanctioning this year by offering a little bonus to non-members. Even though there will be a $10 non-member fee, I will give half of that back with a $5 merchandise credit for those non-members who pre-register on titleDISC. TitleDISC registrants will also get a free t-shirt in their players pack. Everyone will get a free mini and free lunch.
I am working on a few angles to provide 1st place trophies for all divisions, but I won't know how that is going to play out for a little while. Either way, this is shaping up to be one of the biggest and most generous 1-day C-tiers all year :). Phil, Giles and Haleigh are already helping out but I could certainly use more volunteers if anyone is willing and able. Remember that all profit for this tournament is going to the charity, so you'll be helping out a good cause! Please email me at jdann@discgolfportal.com if you can help raise sponsorship, do some light course work next month, or help promote the event in any way.

Sep 24 2008, 02:27 PM
I need to put a bit of info out there about this event:
This is my one comment on the situation and I'm not going into detail so please don't ask. There has been some bad blood over this tournament. That's extremely unfortunate and it doesn't help anyone to foster such feelings - it certainly doesn't help the sport or the event. It seems that not everyone is 100% pleased with the direction that I'm taking the tournament. From my perspective, this event is about honoring the memory of a McKinney disc golfer. I am working closely with the Clark family and will do everything I can to ensure that this memorial event is the best it can be. This event is not about a power struggle, or someone's hurt feelings.
The City of McKinney contacted me about running this event, and I agreed. There was nothing underhanded about that and it was honestly unexpected, but Ben and Brian are unable to run it this year. The City needed someone to take the reigns and so they called me. I am not running this event for profit, I am running it for the Clark family and for the City. I welcome the help of anyone and everyone who would like to be a part of making this tournament bigger and better than it ever has been. I am already overwhelmed by the amount of support that the local McKinney golfers are giving but one can never have too much support :).
If some negative information comes your way, I apologize for any role I may have played in that negativity. I assure you that the event itself will be nothing but positive. Again, this is my last comment on the subject. I'm ready to focus my energy on making this and my other tournaments as good as they can be :)
So ANYWAY - back to disc golf!

how did this event get approved for sanctioning on the same weekend as an A-tier that is only 2 hours away? I am sure that it is not your fault and this is the only weekend available but it would be nice if the rest of the TX tourneys were spaced apart from each other.

baldguy
Sep 24 2008, 04:56 PM
that A-tier is a lot more than 2 hours away, they're over 250 miles apart. You'd have to have a pretty fast car and some nerves of steel to make that drive in 2 hours :). The two events are well outside the limits and don't really pull from the same pool of players. Plus there is an A-tier in DFW the weekend before, so most players that are looking for a supertour won't necessarily want to do two in a row. Couple all of that with the fact that the A-tier is a final for a series that very few DFW-area golfers have been a part of... and I don't think there's a conflict :)

PDGA Requrements. The HOTT championships could be a Major and McKinney can still hold a C-Tier. With Wimberly being 266 miles away and the A-C tier distance only being 150 miles, I think there is no conflict.

very true Pizza God; your right krazyputt it is more like 3-4 hours from North Dallas to Wimberley. I was just shocked to see the event on the same weekend as an A-tier, A-tiers used to seem like a big deal whenever I 1st started playing tourneys and always had large turnouts; and until the past couple of years there was never this many TX events scheduled on the same weekend.Yes, gas prices do have a huge effect.

I think I'd trade either Austin or Dallas traffic for Bay Area traffic. This place it nutso from 7:00am-10:00am then again from 4:00pm-7:00pm. it's pretty crazy between those times too. it seems like the only time you won't get any bumper-bumper traffic on the freeway is when it's dark outside.

A really fun pitch and putt/ace run course from the concrete/short tees around tall trees. Think a mini fritz park. From the natural/long pads it is streached out and has some cool lines but the holes are still reachable for the most part. Bring your short roc/buzzz game. The course has no schule but a creek is in play on 5 holes.
baldguy
Nov 03 2008, 04:10 PM
you'll need to open up a few times too. one of the alternates is a big shot, and the long tees on holes 6, 10, and 16 will require some chunkage. Lots of the other long holes are driver shots for most golfers, too.
The local group takes pride in their course. It's clean and well-kept. The City of McKinney does a great job with the trash cans, keeping dead limbs off the course, etc. Of course TitleDISC is going to show folks a good time. Expect to have fun :)
On another note: We will have some of the brand-new TitleDISC longsleeve t-shirts available for sale and (if any are left) for payout. There will be Innova straps and bags, lots of different disc molds, and a sweet selection of custom-stamped discs. See y'all in a few days!

Nov 03 2008, 05:42 PM
I guess that depends on how fast the trees are dropping leaves. I'll bring the broom and rake just in case.
BTW - this is a good example of how the local McKinney group has been stepping up to help make this happen. If anyone has been wondering, these folks - especially Giles and Haleigh - are going to have a real impact on the event. Be sure to thank the locals while you're out there playing.

I have TFR bosses, but they don't cost $25... so everyone who pre-paid for a CFR disc will receive their choice of tournament-stamped disc (including champion and Star line discs) plus a $10 merchandise credit!
We are bringing a WIDE selection of discs, some cool Innova apparel, bags, and straps, and some custom TitleDISC long sleeve tees that are sure to go quick. There are even a few Mesquite Open stamps left floating around in the mix, so grab one of those up before they're all gone.

60 players and many are still waiting for tomorrow... I believe the record for this event is 72 (I heard that somewhere - not 100% sure it's correct), so we're already well on our way to surpassing that total!
I hope nobody gets left out this time but there *is* a maximum number of players that we can hold. Because this is a charity event, I will take registrations the morning of the tournament, but *no later* than 8:00am. I don't want to turn anyone away, but if you are not registered by 8:00am on Saturday morning, you will not get to play. Don't count on there even being spots available that morning, as we still have a couple days left of online registration plus in-person at doubles.
Anyway, I'm going to pick up the t-shirts today! those who sign up on TitleDISC.com will receive a free shirt in their players pack. Everyone will receive a free mini, courtesy of Winston Water Coolers! we have 150 or so custom-stamped Alex Clark Memorial discs available, plenty of other Innova merchandise, quite a few Millennium discs, a handful of Discraft leftover from the Carrollton Open, and of course the brand-new TitleDISC longsleeve teeshirts.
By the way - if you are an am playing Open for this event and you intend to take plastic instead of cash for your prize, please let me know at some point before round 2 so I can be prepared.
See you all in McKinney!

nope just the typical e-check via paypal bug. it's fixed now.
72 players registered so far! That means only 28 spots left and we're still a little ways out. if I can get my internet connection working from the course tomorrow, I will extend the online deadline by a few hours.
Don't forget - free lunch will be provided on the course by the city of McKinney!

thanks man, I appreciate that. Of course none of it would be possible without players supporting my events. You all show up, compete, and have fun... I just get to take credit for it ;)
79 players and climbing. If you're waiting till the morning, please don't count on it. Today is payday for many folks, so the last remaining spots should go quickly.
More good news: we should be able to start doubles early! I picked up the t-shirts last night, so I will be out there around 1:00 instead of 3:00 like I was thinking. We should be able to get doubles rolling by 2:00, as long as there are people wanting to play that early :). As usual - minimum of 2 teams per card, maximum of 3. Doubles will be a mix of long and short holes - Odd holes are played from the short (concrete) pads. Evens are played from the longs. The long pads will be marked with flags, or teesigns if they're ready.

I just finished running the numbers for this event. Here's how it breaks down:
Total number of Pro players: 16
Total number of Am players: 83
$546 Donated to the charity
$1421 paid out to Pros, including players packs and trophies
$3873 value in merchandise paid out to Ams, including players packs and trophies
$600 Free Lunch value
$400 Ace Pot paid out
$600 Ring of Fire value
Not too shabby for a charity C-tier event!
This was a great event that gave to a worthy charity. We celebrated the memory of a fallen disc golfer and had an all-around great time doing it :). Next year, if we have the second McKinney course available, I'm thinking B-tier!

What a great time. Thanks to the Clark Family and congrats to Phil for finishing 2nd in open and taking the cash. Thanks to Titledisc for running it so smoothly. It is awesome having the support of the city of McKinney providing food and coming out Friday and cleaning up the course a little. Don O'Connell did a great job on the stamp. It was a blast having Zach Walker in town and big thanks for the entertaining ring of fire and all the cool prizes. I'm very proud of my Haleigh for taking home the advanced women's trophy. Huge thanks to Shabookie and Murphy.

Is there a way to see the round rating without having to post them up to pdga?

not really. I could estimate them, but it wouldn't be very accurate.

Doesn't Jerry Power have a program he put together that estimates ratings w/n 2 or 3 pts.?

ANYONE HEARD WHEN THIS FEATURE WILL BE BACK UP ONLINE?
baldguy
Nov 10 2008, 06:09 PM
Ray - Jerry Power does have an excel spreadsheet that does a fair job of estimating the ratings, but it's only an estimate and in my experience it's only accurate to within 10-12 points. I've had the same result using the published formula, so it's not Jerry's fault. It seems that the PDGA does some calculations outside of what is published. Hell, even the upload feature doesn't give perfectly accurate ratings...

Hell, even the upload feature doesn't give perfectly accurate ratings...
The math is correct. The unofficial process doesn't match the official process which may combine scores from multiple rounds on the same course. And that's even when the TD does all of the course layout input correctly which doesn't always occur.
baldguy
Nov 10 2008, 06:39 PM
IMO, multiple rounds on the same course should never be combined, unless they are *always* combined. There are too many unseen differences. A hypothetical hurricane should either greatly affect the round ratings on a given course or not at all. The same goes for a 10 MPH increase in wind. j ust my opinion, of course... but I know a thing or two about statistical hygiene.
cgkdisc
Nov 10 2008, 07:30 PM
The combining is done statistically. The SSAs for each course are still calculated separately. If the SSA differences are less than 2, the scores are combined to produce an average SSA. If more than 2, then it's presumed that the variance is due to more than normal statistical variation, typically wind. This way we don't rely on the perceptions of the TD.
Several ratings processes are done, not based on "good" math but for customer service reasons. Even if the SSA in one round is "validly" different by one shot (if really known but we usually don't have that precision) from another round, members would prefer they all get the same rating rather than one player getting 10 points more in one round for the "same" score.
