OK, here's an idea... when you have a backup of more than a few minutes, what about a "free zone" and a lid or non disc (football) to allow players to stay warm while waiting. Players are suspended from the rules (I would say SPECIFICALLY regarding throws and tosses) while inside a spray paint defined zone. When there was a wait of more than 15 minutes at Timber Ridge, there were times when a large group were just sitting around. It sucks to have to wait so long without a real outlet.
What do you think of a free fly zone in areas where a long wait is to be expected? It's currently against the rules, but would it keep players from losing their groove and therefore cut down on fairness of players who start on a hole early in the round vs last?
Just a thought that I figured might be a good topic for debate.

From PDGA Rules Sec. 800:
Practice Throw: During a round, the projection of a disc of a distance greater than two meters, or of any distance toward a target, intentional or not, which does not change the players lie, either because it did not occur from the teeing area or the lie, or because the player had already thrown competitively from the teeing area or the lie. Throws that are re-thrown in accordance with the rules are not practice throws. Provisional throws made pursuant to 803.01 C and 803.01 D (3) are not practice throws. A player shall receive a penalty for a practice throw in accordance with sections 803.01 B or 804.02 A (2).
Looks to me like you could throw a football (or any other non-disc projectile) anywhere you want at any time you want with no rules tinkering necessary. Seems like warmup aplenty.

maybe use a towel? ... to stay warm ... to keep your arm loose... you know what i mean
i would think this would be making up a rule to fix a flaw in the way a tournament is run.
not to mention it adds a little something to the game and gives an edge to the experienced ones that should know to keep moving and stay loose while others sit around.

hmm... hadn't seen ray's post yet when I posted.
would be interesting to see the reaction from some when you break out a football during a round and start playing catch. (might have to try this one) ... although I'm sure its hard to throw a football backhanded ;)

It would have to be far enough away from the backed-up tee, and the preceding basket, to avoid distracting active players.

matt... its not like the cdgc msg bard where the moderators are there to help... they only penalize here.
btw... who knew that 'notify moderator' was only for use if you wanted to 'get someone in trouble'?! I had a thread in the wrong spot on here before... clicked the notify moderator button (having never done it before I figured there'd be a box to type the reason for notification) and with no place to explain why I clicked the button (to have the thread moved) ... i got a rather nasty email about not abusing the 'notify moderator' button (again... my first and only time i've clicked it).
sorry... back on topic... a hackey sack... yeah that could work and would take up a lot less space.

One year during the Michigan State finals I brought my portable TV and we watched the Michigan game between holes and I believe I watched it between my shots and balloons

This is how you do it under the rules. The TD marks off your zone. He declares that when you enter the zone, your round is officially suspended. There's no rule against a TD suspending a round. Also, you are responsible for anything that you cause to leave the zone when others are playing, including noise, light or objects of any kind. In other words, you cannot be an audible or visible distraction to other players. You gotta keep it under control. Also, you must resume your round when it is your group's turn to throw, or normal delay of game rules would apply.
You know what amenities the Marshal Street guys are going to set up in the Zone! Dude, the round is suspended here. Help yourself. :D:D:D

well, just like a practice basket near the first hole with tee times, all you gotta say is "We're live here." If they do not stop, I guess you can warn them, or you can tell them to get out of the zone while players are teeing, thereby disallowing hi jinx.

The way the rule about practice throws is worded has got me wondering exactly what the definition of a disc is in that situation. A PDGA legal disc? Would you be able to throw around an overweight disc? If not, what about an aerobie ring?

We waited for 45 minutes on one hole at Timber Ridge. Gah.

I'm all for a suspended from the rule szone s to keep the arm warm & fun level up (if voices can be kept down)
45 minutes of waving a towel @ Am Nats was kinda boring. Glad they had a shade tent though.

The ADGA has been working on that quite a bit. Last tournament, The Fling, I had just a single group wait. So come on up and give it another go!!! :D
