I was wondering when pre-registration would be up, and also more general info, such as entry fees, schedule, doubles round, format/course layout, etc.

I've been looking forward to this one for a while now, great course, and I've heard great things about the tourneys that Rusco and the DD crew put on.

Yessir, I'm helping run the Mr. Jim's tournament this year. I'm not sure if Jeremy will be in town, but I can take your signup there if you like. Of course, online is still the best method... it's not much, but it's the only way I get paid for my services :)

Sorry for the delay on the flyer and tournament posting. Things are busy here at DD headquarters and with the laptop crashing it hasn't made things any easier.

Innova discs are getting stamped with the new Champion Max in the CFR plastic! I only got 25 of these and don't expect them to last long! Other CFR discs will include Champion Xcaliber, Destroyer, and Champion Glow Wraith.

We will cap this event at 200 and expect another great turnout so don't delay on registering. We don't want to have to turn anyone away like we did in February. Titledisc registration will be up shortly.

When Rusco says things are busy at DD headquarters, it translates too, Somebody is getting hitched this weekend! Can't wait to come see ya this weekend buddy!

It will most likely be four rounds, I guess we'll use that same course that we used in February? I can't remember the course name. You know since it is a DD event that the payouts will be awesome, and we always try to post round scores ASAP.

I don't really know if there are any plans for course changes in between rounds, we'll have to see what the boss says.

2 rounds each day with split pools on each course that will switch courses the 2nd round. Typically Pro's at the Lake then LL on Saturday and LL then finish at the Lake on Sunday. The rest of the divisions will be filled in as required to balance each pool.

Only one set of tees at the Lake but LL will have the additional long tees set up for all Pro and Advanced divisions and will play all concrete as OB and Beyond.

I'll probably start getting some lines painted to mark the long tees sometime next week for anyone that wants some practice time. If you played them earlier this year then they are still fairly easy to figure out.

last time emac promised he would not have am2 play a shorter course, this was just after the ratings changed (from 915 to 935) .the weird thing was that the pros were playing the longs at llwoods at the same time the am2's were playing the shorts, so we didnt really need to shoot from the shorts, especially at ll.

The "whole course" comment was a bit of a rag on pancake since he threw down a 1000 rated round from the shorts without playing any OB.

However, for this year with the Intermediate division break at 935 I don't see why they can't play the long tees and all the OB. So that will be my vote for discussion with the TD. :) But I'm not the one making the call he's currently on honeymoon in paradise. :D

I'm not sure what the course looked like 5 years ago, someone else will have to shed some light on that. I do know that the city has moved some pins but I'm not sure when.

The ones I know of are: 4 I think used to be in a longer position close to long 5's tee. Now it's about a 170' shot just past the trees in front of the tee box, 5 is now short of the drainage ditch next the bridge, and 6 is also short of the drainage ditch between the evergreen trees and the drainage ditch. I think both of those pins used to be across the ditch in the past.

There are also a couple of new tees and an alternate basket: Alternate basket is used to stretch hole 4 back out closer to 275' give or take. Hole 7 long tee is set about 30' farther back than the existing long tee, 9 long tee is set another 30' farther back, 15's long tee is about 200' to the right of the tee pad closeer to the bridge over Garden Ridge and the drainage ditch and 18 is back about 40' between the tree and bench by the backstop.

And then you play all concrete and beyond as OB. There will also be mandos on holes 5 and 15 (which I forgot to get marked for the last tournament :()

Definitely a much different course than the short tees and no OB.

anarak82
Sep 10 2008, 12:32 PM
thanks for the explaination. if we do end up playing OB in MA2, that's fine with me, as long as I have a handout with a map or text listing the OBs, that'd be great.

anyone know any nicer hotels in the area that have suites? internet searches are giving me listing for DFW airport area hotels, and I know there's gotta be something nice on I35 close to there. Disc golf trips are usually my only chance to get out of town now that I have a kid and I usually like to stay somewhere nice.

DOC65
Sep 10 2008, 01:52 PM
OB is easy. If your disc is surrounded by concrete its OB. If your disc is on the opposite side of the concrete then its OB. And this makes 15 and 16 play somewhat like island greens forcing a re-tee if you do not cross over the OB into safe ground before landing OB.

Time to get geared up for Lewisville. I will be posting the current registration list on the PDGA site shortly.

I tried to pull some strings with Innova and get the Innova Champion Boss for the players packs but they said that they aren't going to stamp them until October 3rd and that there is no way to make any exceptions on this one.

McCabe and Smitty won't be making this trip but Paul McBeth will be flying in from California to get warmed up for the USDGC!

The long tees at LL Woods have been marked along with the two drop zone for the mando's on holes 5 and 15. The trees will be marked prior to the tournament but you'll see the drop zones as you walk by them.

I couldn't put out tee flags for the long tees because the park needs mowing which will probably happen in the not too distant future. However, I did mark arrows from the pin to the long tee as well as marking the short tee box with arrows to the long tees.

Get those registrations in!!!

Hey Ace,

We AMs like to call it cash although our cash was transformed into merch. You have to admit though, if it wasn't for us AMs you pro's would never existed. Face it, we are the foundation of the sport. So what if some of us don't ever make it to the Pro Division, at least we get to play with some folks that don't play as seriously as some of the Pro's. We AMs value the sport and not the money and to me that is more important than winning any division.

Naw, for real though, I respect anyone that is pro because at one point they were in my position and had to move up! If it wasn't for the Pro's the sport wouldn't be the same. In saying that, thankyou PRO's for your support and dedication to this wonderful sport.

13 Speed Driver with a 2.5cm wide rim. Flight seems to be somewhere around Destroyer and Xcaliber range. Sounds like they are having trouble getting consistent runs.

If you want XClaliber type flight then get the domey ones. Flat ones seem to be more like Destroyers. Tournament/Production stamping doesn't start until October.

The Lake is a 24hr park so as long as you have lights, you have a full group and you talk Jeremy into hanging around you can go late. I'd say to plan on starting by 6:15'ish, maybe earlier, if you want to get done by dark.

No word yet on what divisions will be playing concrete as OB at LL yet. If your Intermediate or higher then play your practice round with all concrete and beyond as OB just to be prepared. :)

The Bald one summed it up very well.

On the more technical side the flyer posted above gives you the details about the players meeting and start times for the rounds. There will be at least 1 hour between the time the last score card is turned in and the start of the 2nd round. I haven't heard if there will be lunch provide at the Lake yet. Don Q. who usually does BBQ has to work his real job this weekend. So you should plan to either bring your lunch or run by one of the local fast food places on your way to LL if you start at the Lake or on your way back to the Lake if you start at LL.

Other than that you will have a blast and as with most first timers you can't wait for the next tournament. And being in Texas there are plenty to choose from!!! Look up www.TitleDisc.com (http://www.TitleDisc.com) for many of the others coming up soon.

Man I can't wait to get out of the garage and onto the course. :D

Wow! Pulled in to Lake Park just after 1:00 a.m. The DD mechanics had to go to work on the way down which caused a little bit of a delay but after some late night glow frisbee we are excited to be in Texas again!

Titledisc has 104 registered players right now. I think Josh said that any DD event with over 100 players qualifies for aTitleDISC tournament sponsorship:)

I just updated the list on PDGA and we have 118 right now with many more expected to sign up tomorrow! It looks like we are going to have an awesome weekend for the tournament so I hope everyone is excited.

I did receive a phone call today asking about a rumor for a $30,000 ace. Unfortunately I have to squash those rumors.....Old Man and I had discussed doing this earlier in the year but just didn't make it happen this time because we had so much extra stuff going on in our lives. Old Man is still recovering from kidney stones and diverticulitis and I'm recovering from a wedding! If the $30,000 ace hole was the only reason that you wanted to play this weekend we can make arrangements for a refund but I don't think you will want miss out on this weekend. I haven't found any posts or tournament flyers that mentioned the $30,000 ace so I hope that it was just started from someone who just thought it was happening.

Anyway, we will be setting up tournament headquarters at the Lake in the morning so come check in, see some plastic, and play in the doubles event.

Gateway is sponsoring another one of the best Ring of Fire's in the country for this event! Don't forget to putt with your favorite Wizard, Warlock, or Magic for this event at the conclusion of the tournament to qualify for some extra bonus prizes!

Of course we will also be doing the $1 CTP for the Discraft Chainstar so don't miss out on your chance to take home a $400 basket. Look for Mike Anderson's CTP Chainstar basket out at L.L. Woods for the alternate basket on hole #4.

There will also be food available at the Lake during lunch and after the evening rounds so don't miss out on this.

Looks like am both courses will tee off:)

I received a call from Brian at 1000.rated.com the week of the Lewisville Open. He asked if I would be interested in writing an article about the upcoming tournament. I told him that I would but had no idea that when I asked Crispin Carrasco if he would help me out and compile the weekend trip in to words that I would get something of this quality.

Mixing Business With Pleasure
(a road trip with Dynamic Discs)

The difficult task of translating an epic experience into a limited amount of written words never seems to do the experience itself, the justice it deserves; not for the reader or the writer himself. The ultimate goal in such writings is to put the readers in the writers' shoes, I wish those who didnt make it to Lewisville, Texas this last weekend for the DD Lewisville Open could see what I saw and felt what I felt. The best thing I can do for the disc golfers of the world who missed out on such a killer weekend is to recount some of the cool stuff that went down Friday, Saturday, Sunday and early Monday morning.

Before the weekend of the 27th and 28th had even begun, I knew it was going to be a ridiculously good time. How do I know, you ask? Give me one hot minute and I'll tell ya'! My brother and I had been to a couple of tournaments where the DD Team was in attendance. If you haven't met all or any of them you should; they're all great players of the sport and great people in general. We would see them pile out of The DDRV having fun and shredding courses. Me and my brother would be there in the middle cards of the intermediate division, talking about how cool it would be to have a spot on board that RV and play alongside the team members. Fast forward a year and after a lot of practice and an ever-growing passion for the game, one of my disc golf dreams came true a few weeks ago...a phone call from Jeremy Rusco with an invite to hop in the RV with some DD soldiers on a mission to Texas.

Getting on the road Thursday night, trucking down the turnpike, reminded me of being a kid on Christmas Eve; couldn't sit still and overly excited. Eager to discover what surprises lay ahead just five hours down the road. The crew on this quest had the thirst for fun and an appetite for adventure. It included(name, sponsors): Jake Newell(Dynamic Discs, Discraft, Goober, Fruit Smiles), the notorious S.N.G. Chris Tyler(DD, Bud Light Lime, mosquitoes), Angela (the state of Michigan, chocolate-covered cherries, travel-size shampoo and conditioner, cell phones that get no service), Crispin Carrasco(Dynamic Discs, Mom's Famous Glass-bottom Boats) and the Commander in Chief/ Newlywed himself, Jeremy Rusco(Dynamic Discs of course, transmission stop-leak fluid). The ride down itself was fairly uneventful and all around relaxing. Except for the 50 miles at 3000 RPMs, an illegal adoption of a baby outside a gas station restroom, a rapid-fire wine tasting with Chris and Angela, and a run-trip-drop and roll on concrete while trying to catch a dynamite disco-light Frisbee, nothing crazy went down worth mentioning.

Friday morning came with great enthusiasm. We rolled into the course on Lewisville Lake ready to set up headquarters and get some practice in for Saturday. The welcoming committee included Lonnie the park(an upshot)ranger and some really nice maintenance workers bearing gifts of tables, water- jugs, and pop-up tents. Friday morning was the first time I got to see how much thought and prep-work goes into a smooth operating tournament. By 10am headquarters were ready to greet players. It was now time to check out the course. I had already been told by Newell that hole 3 had one of the coolest greens in the country...he was not exaggerating. With help from the sun, mounds of Texas dirt radiated brightly on a drop-off towards the calm lakeside. Throughout the multi-elevated soil, the roots of trees bursted out of the ground as if they were trying to uproot and walk away. Nestled in the chaotic ground towards the high-land was a basket, that at first glance, appeared to be growing out of the ground as well. Postcard quality and a **** good hole. The rest of the course was awesome. All kinds of shots, routes, trouble-rough and fun. By the time we got done playing the course, a soon to be new friend, Miles Seaborn(Discraft, bags of ice), came on the scene and took us to L.L. Woods via truck bed, which is still legal to ride in within Texas if over 18 years-old(it was like a free amusement ride). Miles was a cool host with plenty of good conversation, advice and demonstrated how to throw a buzz 11,000 ft. L.L. Woods was challenging due to the O.B. with the difficulty level being balanced out by a lot of open hyzer routes. The course looked easy, but in reality the front 9 was laid out like a chess game and your opponent(the course), had all his pieces in position to make you think that an aggressive attack would give you the easy checkmate. Just when you think you have the upper-hand, the different pieces(steep hills to O.B., fast grass, and the trees) go on the offensive meticulously attacking your score card. The smart-conservative rounds at Woods were the ones that helped players climb cards that weekend. I spent all my time there digging my way out of bad holes with the help of a putter. After Woods, we went back to the lake for some doubles where Newell and I casually hammered out a -13 for the win. The Southern California team of Paul McBeth and Noah Rodriguez came in shooting a 10 down with McBeth casually saying that Lake Lewisville feels like a 14 down course. Player check-in, Texas BBQ, filling out score cards for Saturday, and a good nights rest ended out the fantastic Friday.

Saturday morning came with a perfect sky, lizards, squirrels and other varieties of nature frolicked about through the dewy grass and trees. The faint sounds of these creatures rustling in the leaves and nibbling on their breakfast created a relaxing melody from Mother Nature's orchestra. Those soothing sounds were abruptly cut short and for good reason; they were replaced by the mass-crashing of chains caused by more than a 170 competitors practice putting for the soon-to-begin battle. Players checking in, signing up, and looking through the huge selection of plastic went as smooth as one could hope for. The one, in this case being Rusco had the lap-top running at warp speed to get everyone ready to rock in a timely fashion. I swear, he could be in three places at once. Slanging discs, signing up players, dealing with credit card numbers, taking time to say what's up to friends, etc; all without breaking a sweat. Before you knew it, the cards were ready and it was time to tee off! The whole first round had such a good vibe. Everyone I played with all Saturday was so stoked just to be out in the beautiful weather playing some golf with each other. When the atmosphere is on such a positive level, I believe it can help a round go a lot better and with a lot less pressure. No one would agree more than Paul McBeth. Every time our cards crossed paths or were in sight, he was always smiling and looked to possess an all-around laid-back demeanor which I have to figure out how to do because he went to lunch with a unofficial 1086 rated, 14 under...yes...-14; just like he said was possible for him. Chuck Kennedy quoted on the PDGA discussion board, If his unofficial rating holds up, McBeth's 1086 in the first round cracks the top 10 best rounds on courses with SSA under 48. Lunch was almost as fun as the first round. CTP qualifying throws were flying, BBQ, music and making new friends just added more to all the good times we had at the lake that day. Even checking the score cards and working the CTP event with Newell was a great break between rounds. Rusco later asked me if it affected my playing any. "My face-masking 4 birdie putts is what's affecting my game, holmes," I replied. Having stuff to do actually took my head out of the game just long enough to get relaxed again and ready to play. The afternoon round went wrong quickly for me personally, but rallied on the back nine to get rid of some 5's and a 4. Nobody other than Jake Newell knows how challenging L.L. Woods can play during the tournament. After his first seven holes he was eight over par only to fight back and birdie the next 10 out of 11 holes. He is keeping that scorecard in his bag from now on to remind him to not give up even after a bad start. McBeth, J.D. Ramirez, Seaborn and a few others shot well enough to keep them in the top of the ranks...now back to the lake to party. More shenanigans and fun at headquarters, with the park ranger even getting down on some upshot action(he was quoted as saying how cool it was and inquired about coming to the next local league night). Sleeping in an air-conditioned RV was a great ending to an awesome day.

Not to be outdone by Saturdays funfest, Sunday had some jaw-dropping events of its own. Three ACES went down, with one of them on my morning round card. Nice hyzer-bomb skip-in. Everyone seemed more focused as most second days are. A mad dash to climb cards in the last 18 holes of a tournament is always a good time to see what a player is capable of. A lot of great drives, upshots and putts were happening throughout the courses. Congrats to McBeth, who flew in from California, for destroying it. After the dust settled and everyone nestled into where they finished for the weekend, the time to reminisce and be among friends commenced. Jake hosted the hugest ring of fire I have ever seen, Gateway gave out some goods to the Wizard's loyal subjects, some lucky guy took a nice basket home for winning the CTP in a playoff, and local legend "Old Man" dropped a huge stack of discs on another CTP event. The awards and AM pay-outs went smooth thanks to all the heads that helped Jeremy run a solid tournament.

By nightfall it was time to tear it down, pack it up, and head yonder north. I wish I could say we got on the road and headed to the next city on a never ending quest to spread the gospel of the D's, but that will have to be just a dream for now; especially since the RV dropped me off in time to get a shower, grab a coffee, and go to work. Best weekend of '08 and the Lewisville Open is definitely at the top of my growing list of greatest disc golf experiences. Everyone we hung out with in Texas showed us the finest hospitality and the best of times. A lot of locals stepped up to help where help was needed and those contributions are the backbone of epic events. Lastly, gotta thank Jeremy and Dynamic Discs for the opportunity to live the dream and gotta also say thanks to everyone else that was on board, Jake, Chris, Angela...you guys are hilarious and can't wait to hit the road with you all again. Old Man, Miles, Don and all of Lewisville, can't wait to be down there for another one, sooner than later for sure. Until then, PUT D'S ON IT!

Sincerely, Crispin Thomas Carrasco PDGA # 33698
