Just got sanctioning approved for the 2008 Seneca Creek Soiree.

Late season A Tier to help finish out the fall season. November 15 / 16, 2008. Seneca Creek State Park - Gaithersburg, MD.

Tournament website and flyer will be up shortly.

We've been working hard getting teepads in after the course was re-designed a year ago. Additional pin placements have been added to stretch it out as well.

Format will be 2 - 18 hole rounds on Saturday, 1-27 hole round Sunday w/a cut to a final 9 (players TBD).

Excited to play in this one...Seneca has always been a favorite of mine...Unfortunately haven't played it since the Soiree last year. Has the course changed a lot?

gang4010
Sep 12 2008, 10:40 AM
The most significant changes have been in the installation of permanent tees. We still have about 15 to do to have 2 on every hole, but we're getting there.
There has been a minor reconfiguration that has happened since then as well - so the loops are better organized. Instead of an 8, 9, & 10 hole loop, there are 3 nine hole loops, each starting and finishing at the parking lot. This reconfiguration resulted in losing 2 of the new holes and regaining 1 of the old ones, and adding one new one. There were some numbering changes associated with this reconfiguration as well.
There have also been several extended pin placements put in since last year's Soiree (Holes 1, 4, (soon to be 6, and 8) 14, 15, are the ones that come to mind). There are several more in the works, as well as some super extended tees in some locations.

You may want to plan a weekend to check it out before November.

Yes

Tees and pins will be mixed. If you find yourself on a tee wiithout little orange flags, you are on the wrong tee. All tees and pins will be indicated in the program. Most pins will be either B or C pins and will not move the entire weekend. Sunday's round of 27 will likely see a few longer teepads. Keep your program with you at all times.

I'm adopting the Spencer Thurman/Kirk Yoo rule - if you ask a question that's covered in the program - it costs you a dollar :)

Yes adjustments to round info still need to be made.

I'd like to thank everyone for coming out and participating in my DG laboratory. I learned several (I think) important things (pros and cons) that I wil share when I'm more awake.

I think largely it was a successful experiment, but could still use a little tweaking to make it even better. I heard no complaints about the divisional format, but I also received only one response to my SURVEY :)

If you played this weekend, and you still have your program, please drop me a PM with your thoughts - you can't let Hawk be the only one to respond! :)

So I haven't gotten a lot of feedback yet on my Soiree experiment, but the feedback I have gotten has been largely positive. Here are a few items to note and think about.

I have long advocated condensing the #of divisions available for competition, claiming that given a larger field, players currently in the MPM and MA1 categories would indeed have a chance to cash in the MPO division. From a very basic standpoint, the Soiree results bear support for that argument.

Of 15 MPM players - 12 of them cashed - that's 80%
Of 31 total cashers - 11 of them would qualify for what the PDGA calls MA1 players (rated under 970) - and 2 would qualify for MA2 (rated under 935)

The questions that will arise will be many. Some of the more significant ones are:
1) Does the event have good perceived value for lower rated players? And where is the ceiling for that perception?(i.e. at what $$entry will that perceived value be lost?)
2) Does the sliding scale provide enough perceived value to make the overall competition more fair?
3) Will eliminating the inequities in the traditional divisional structure cause MPM players to shy away from a larger division? (In other words - if you take away their bigger pay day -will they still continue to play?)
4) Given that the sliding scale reduced the size of the overall purse - does this scheme still provide sufficient perceived value for the higher rated player for THEM to continue to travel and participate? (Of course, more added cash would go a long way towards making it ALL better)
5) Is the "EVENT" itself of sufficient quality to draw players of all skill levels in spite of the irregularity of the divisional structure?

Next year's Soiree has been submitted for June 6/7, when we will have significantly warmer weather, and lots more daylight. I'll be working on tweaking the ideas used this year for next - and I am open to all your feedback about your likes/dislikes of my mad scientist DG labORatORy.

I think Disc'n'Dat got June 6/7 for an A-tier already which is probably in your radius plus there's one in AZ.

If you look at Disc n Dat thread, he said they changed from Mother's Day to June 6-7.

Is that somewhere in KY?? Don't think there's much crossover in draw there, but I guess we'll see.

It's the A-tier mileage factor which may come into play regardless of player draw. I think it might be 500 miles and possibly no more than 2 events on a weekend but the 2009 tour guide isn't posted yet to consult. Cincy is about 500 miles from Seneca according to the PDGA course directory.

Sounds like they are far enough apart to me - but like I said - I guess we'll see!! Gentry would be the one to decide right? Although we do get travelers from further away than that, seems to me - that amount of separation won't hurt the draw for either event.

There may be something even bigger going on that weekend also that hasn't been posted until details get worked out and approved.

A little late, but congrats Craig on giving this new system a try. I was a bit of a doubter but it really did look like players at least in the 940< range had real odds of breaking the cashline at a reduced price. Oh yeah, and win $$$$$$ instead of plastic!!!

Did you have difference in feedback from different skill levels? I'd be interested to see at what rating level players would be willing to do these tournaments more than one weekend each year.

There were three guys that cashed that were under 940 (a 938, a 929, and a 920). I am slowly getting feedback from players across the skill spectrum. The response so far from higher rated players was an appreciation for getting to play with folks they don't normally get a chance to (which at least on the surface is evidence to me that the top pros are in fact friendly and approachable people - unlike the commonly voiced stereotype to the contrary). The lower rated players I've heard from voiced an appreciation of value for participation. Even though their chances of cashing was low - the oportunity to play w/top players at a reduced rate seems to have been well received. The mid level guys I've heard from felt the same way - knowing they had to play well to cash seems to have been a motivating factor - which is at odds with what one might expect from the normally "entitled" group that ususally only has to play "ok" to still be awarded merch.

To be honest, I haven't gotten enough volume of responses to identify trends in various skill groups - but from an overall standpoint - all the responses have been positive - suggesting a repeat attempt at the format (with some tweaking of course) would be well received.

What I would like to see - is some other TD try it so we can compare notes. I think one of the biggest lessons is that TD's really do have influence over players attitudes - and that the status quo divisional structure is neither magical, nor absolute in the minds of players. Provide them with a good venue, a fair price, and solid amenities - and the importance of the divisional structure takes a back seat.

One 876 rated player sent me an email and asked me to post it - which I did in the Ratings and Skill based section - if you want to see for yourself - please go read!

From a practical standpoint, the most important vote is whether they sign up to play or not. You had a good turnout so it was successful. The primary question now would be if they would enter it again under the same format. The reasons are only secondary since they will likely vary.

I agree Chuck.

Seems that many feel strongly and fall back on the argument of "what players want" when discussing doing anything different with divisions. So naturally when trying something different, I sought out players opinions of the pros/cons. No experiment can be 100% successful on the first try - so in seeking feedback - I'm hoping to make the next run through even better.

"The primary question now would be if they would enter it again under the same format."

For me the primary question is whether or not a similar response could be had in other regions of the country.

It doesn't really matter if other places adopt the format. There are still drawbacks if you think it's the way all events should be run. All of our formats that have proven popular have certain limitations in terms of being "the only format everyone should use" which is why we have a variety available for TDs to choose.

Sure it matters! :)

I have already said I don't necessarily advocate this format as the defacto default divisional format. That doesn't mean getting other people try it for the sake of trying it isn't worthy.

The fact that TD's HAVE choices doesn't mean much when the reality is that 98% of our events are all the same format - and use a divisional system with numerous flaws. Getting TD's to try alternate formats IS VERY IMPORTANT.

All I've done is provide a reference point for people to draw from. Players of all skill levels tried it and appear to be satisfied. It was easy to orchestrate and NOT complicated. So far the only detractors are people who weren't there. So now the question remains - "whether or not a similar response could be had in other regions of the country".

Consider it as if it were a paper in a medical or science journal. If the experiment can't be repeated by someone else with similar results - then the validity of the results are questionable. Multiple data points are essential.
