Wow, less than 3 months to go until another fun Waterloo tournament. :D

The only way to sign up right now is to take the Father Dave McC-Note Challenge Full details are below. About 10 -15 folks are already in, and around now is when a bunch more start sending in their McC-Notes to reserve their spots.

Regular registration will open sometime in the next month or so. If you are on my disc golf email list, you will get an email about it as soon as it opens. Club members current on their dues will also get a form in the mail. The timing will be about the same, but depending on the speed of the postal service, some members may get it up to a day before the email goes out.

If you aren't on the email list and would like to be, send me an email at [email protected] (always disc related stuff :D; never spam ).

See you at Waterloooooooooooo

Its Father Dave McC-Note Time :D

The way it works is this: send the Waterloo Club a check for $100 now. Your spot in the tournament is guaranteed. When fees for the different divisions are set, we will deduct from your $100:

your entry fee
ace pot
ring-of-fire
mulligans
non-active pdga fee (if applicable)

All the money left goes directly to the charity. In 2007, there were 60 McC-Note Challengers (even though a few ended up cancelling, this was still well over half the field). This added nearly $1800 to the total charitable donation!

To clarify something that has come up occasionally: this money saves your spot, not a spot. Once the tournament fills up and there is a waitlist, if you have to cancel you cant just give your spot to someone else. As with any cancellation, the spot goes to the next person on the waitlist. If you do have to cancel, you will receive a refund of everything except what would have gone to the charity (and that money will still be added to the donation).

Dont wait too long and miss out on this wonderful event. Send in your money now and you wont have to worry about it filling up without you.

Send your check or money order, payable to WDGC, to:
WDGC
PO Box 33531
Austin, TX 78764

Thanks!!!

I've gotten a couple of inquiries from folks who don't know about the Waterloo tournament or have only heard somewhat about it, so here is some additional information:

You dont have to be a Waterloo or pdga member to play, although because it is a pdga tournament, there is an extra fee for non-active pdga members (I believe it has risen to $10 this year ). The tournament is at Waterloo Park in downtown Austin, between the Capitol and Brackenridge Hospital. It is a temporary course, 18 holes, that we only get to set up once per year. Each morning we put the baskets out and each night we have to bring them in. The main tournament will be 4 rounds, 2 on Saturday And 2 on Sunday. There will also be a doubles round/tournament on Friday, usually starting about 1 pm. You dont have to be in the main tournament to play doubles.

The tournament is a whole lot of fun. Many people come back year after year, including some who played in the really early years (late 70s and early 80s). It has a big disc golf family atmosphere.

There is a limit of 90 players, so once registration opens, it usually fills up in 5-7 days. If you want to play, but don't want to McC-Note, you'll need to mail in your registration form as soon as you get it. We use the postmark to determine date of entry so get it in the mail right away. (no on-line registration available).

Even after regular registration opens, you can still McC-Note if you want - about 10-15 people usually do this. It no longer has the advantage of holding a spot, but it still helps out a great cause, plus we usually have some kind of "goody" for our Father Dave McC-Note Challengers. Not sure just what it will be this year, but in the past we've done things like hats, shirts, pottery magnets, and golf umbrellas.

The McC-Noters so far:

Stevo Barnes
Rick Vigil
Mark Penniman
Jeff Moore
John Godfrey
Del Stair
Aaron Stair
Lynn Wright
Rene Torres
Jan Baumgardner
Jerry Lively
Mark Wilson
Brian Paschal

The Waterloo Disc Golf Club is proud to announce that it is hosting the 31st Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic at Waterloo Park in Austin, Texas. This historic disc golf tournament is the longest running tournament in the Southwestern U.S. and one of the oldest in the country. This year the dates are set for October 17-19, 2008. The 31st Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic will again benefit the Austin Ronald McDonald House (RMH).

The RMH is a wonderful non-profit, charitable organization that provides a home away from home for families with critically ill children undergoing treatment at area hospitals. This allows parents the chance to be very close to their children when they are needed most.

Thanks to the support of our great sponsors, we have donated more than $52,000 in cash and supplies to RMH over the last ten years. The goal for 2008 is to raise $10,000. Wont you please help by being a sponsor of this wonderful tournament? Sponsorship can be in the form of cash, merchandise, or a combination of the two. The different levels are:

For a sponsorship of $200 or more: your logo or name on the back of the official tournament shirt, on the club web site, plus on a tee-box sign. This sign will be seen by all of the competitors each time that they play the course. Your name will also be added to the Sponsor List that will be displayed at the course and distributed to the players, the general public, and the media.

For a sponsorship of $100 - $199: your name on a tee-box sign, web site, and Sponsor List.

For a sponsorship of up to $99: your name on the web site and Sponsor List.

For more information, please contact Gordon Maxim-Kelley at (512) 858-0119 ([email protected]) or Lou Moreno at (512) 389-1853 ([email protected]).

Please send all sponsorship to Waterloo Disc Golf Club, PO Box 33531 Austin, TX, 78764 (checks payable to WDGC). If you wish, you may make your check payable directly to Austin Ronald McDonald House in order to get the tax benefits of a charitable donation.

Thank you for your support!

SNPC this past weekend was part of the endowment program where fees and such were donated to the charity that was attached to the event.

Why can't Waterloo do the same and have those fees go to MacDonald House instead of PDGA?

Sep 12 2008, 10:58 AM
Thanks Sue! I've known about that for a while, I just haven't gotten around to checking on it (but I will - this tournament would be a great fit for that program).

Meanwhile, some more McC-Noters:

Kirk Lavallee
Wade Kolb
Richard Ahlgrim
Ed Morgan
Gary Barron
Leon Gillard IV
Mark McCrimmon

That makes 30, with at least another 3 on the way. Registration will open soon, so keep an eye out. (or go ahead and send in that McC-Note :D )

Registration for the 31st Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic is now open! The tournament flyer is below. You can also get the form at our website: www.austindiscgolf.org (http://www.austindiscgolf.org) (it should be up by this evening, or tomorrow at the latest), or you can email me at [email protected] Well also try to get them on the bulletin boards at the Austin courses and at Disc Nation. Feel free to print a copy and post it at your local course too.

This tournament will fill quickly (usually takes about 5-8 days to sell out). There is no on-line registration available, so get your entry from plus check or money order in the mail ASAP. We use postmarks to determine date of entry, so dont delay by trying to hook up with me at a mini or event. Handing it to me is the same as getting that days postmark on it. And please dont try to give it to other club Board Members or volunteers. All entries need to be mailed to the PO Box or given to me in person.

Waterloo club members current on their dues also have/will receive one in the mail (should arrive either today or tomorrow). One big correction to the mailed flyer is under the pricing section at the top of page 2 where it refers to Flashback Singes. That is WRONG. We are back to our usual Friday Doubles on October 17th.

It is not too late to be a Father Dave McC-Note Challenger. While it no longer has the benefit of saving you a space, you will still receive an extra McC-Note Goodie in your player pack, recognition in the program, plus the satisfaction of helping out the Austin Ronald McDonald House.

Thanks, and I hope to see you at Waterlooooooooooooooooooooo

Just a reminder that our next general club meeting is on Monday.

<font color="blue"> Monday September 22nd
7 pm
Old Alligator Grill (at intersection of South Lamar and Manchaca)
</font>
This is an important meeting, and you do not have to be a club member to attend. We want everyone there.

<font color="red"> Come find out about the major, upcoming project at the Circle C Disc Golf Course this Winter. </font> This joint project between the Parks &amp; Rec.Dept. and Waterloo DGC will be a move towards the kind of disc golf course that weve all been wanting to see in Austin. This project will take a lot of time, energy, and commitment from the disc golfers. Your thoughts and suggestions are needed to get it done right and quickly.

---------------------------------------------

And a reminder to get your entries in for the Waterloo tournament right away. Registration has only been up for a few days and the tournament is over 2/3 full. We especially want more women to enter. We already have 3 pro women (and we want more) but we need some more ladies to fill out Adv. Women and Rec. Women.

To encourage more women to give it a try, well make it risk-free. Sign up now and if you have to cancel, well waive the cancellation fees. Nothing to lose, and a really fun experience to gain &amp;#61514; Plus we always have extra stuff in the players packages for our women, plus CTP contests that are for the women only. Please Please come play Waterloo, we know youll have a great time!

A couple of more pro grand masters would be great too. Weve already got two (and there may be some in the masters division that might be eligible/willing to move divisions).

Here is a direct link to the flyer on the club web site: http://www.austindiscgolf.org/docs/events/31st_Waterloo_Tournament_Flyer.doc

If for some reason that doesnt work, just go to the site and look for the Waterloo Tournament information (easy to find): www.austindiscgolf.org (http://www.austindiscgolf.org)

We use postmark to determine date of entry, so get yours in the mail NOW!

Thanks!

Sorry, but I've been swamped with work (fiscal year-end stuff) and other Waterloo stuff, so I haven't been able to put much up here or on the pdga player list site. I'll try to get some done soon.

The big news at this point is that the tournament is now taking part in the PDGA Competition Endowment Fund. This means the players' pdga fees now will go to the charity instead of the pdga. :D

This also means the demise of the mulligans. Some will be unhappy with this as they like the mulligans and think they are very fun. Others may not really care. And others still will be delighted because now they can get ratings from the event (with mulligans, we were an XC tier event and no player ratings; now we are just a plain C tier with ratings). Plus they won't have to deal with the psychology of "when to use the mulligan" each round. :D

If you paid for mulligans with your entry, you've got some money coming back to you when you check in - or maybe you've already purchased some raffle tickets ;) :D

If you're upset about losing your crappy mulligan because your entry fee now goes to helping a kid with cancer, do us all a favor and walk in front of a bus. This is a great thing for the charity and a great thing for the tourney. It's going to attract a more diverse group of players who previously found the mulligans gimmicky...maybe there will be more than 3 or 4 pros at this year's event! Awesome work Gordo!!!

It took longer than usual, but the 31st Waterloo DG Classic is full.

Now that it is full, we have started a waitlist. If you want to get on it I just need your name. It can help to know your division (for when we make up scorecards), but that won't affect whether or not you get in. We don't have set numbers of people in a division, so... for example: it won't help to be willing to play pro when you normally play advanced. If there is a spot for you, we'll get you in regardless of your division.
Because we are so close to the tournament, today is the only day to do it by emailing or calling (don't send a PM through the pdga discussion board, it is currently too unreliable).

If you send an email, you must do it before 5:30 pm today (which is hopefully when Ill leave work). [email protected]

Or call me at home (512) 858-0119 (even in Austin you might need the area code as I live in Dripping Springs and some phone companies consider that "long distance" - sheesh ). If Im not there, leave a message.

If you dont get in touch today, then you need to get word to me at the park tomorrow (Friday). Either come on down and tell us or get in touch with someone who is going to be there and have them let us know. Well be there starting to set up by 10:00 am.

After that, the only thing you have to do is be there Saturday morning at tourney HQ when check-in closes at 8:15 am. If anyone drops out at the last minute or hasn't checked in, we'll drop them and fill their spot with someone from the waitlist.

If you are on the waitlist, don't despair. Even if you are far down on the list, there is always hope. At least twice in the last few years, everyone on the list who chose to show up Saturday morning actually made it in.

Thanks,
Gordon

Thanks to Gordon, the staff, and Waterloo DGC for yet another well run tournament.
You are an inspiration for what a well run event should look like.

Enjoyed everyone I played with this weekend, and had a blast. See you next year!!

Until then, you are all invited to come play the Live Oak Summer Open in 2009!!

Oops, looks like a "pre-corrected" version got posted. How you listed it is how it was posted at the course and paid out (we'll try to get the corrections up soon).

Speaking of: Stevo Barnes' partner in Adv.Gr.Mstr was actually Bert Lirette (not Dale Gibbins as listed).

Thanks for pointing that out. :o
