The 2008 Hickory Disc Golf Classic will be September 6 and 7. We filled up last year, so don't wait too long. Entry includes meals both days. This year will have the premier of a new par 4 placement never played until the first round of the tournament.
Go to Hickory Disc Golf (http://hickorydiscgolf.com) for details and link to online registration.

Agreed.
Not playing a new hole before a tournament is not a good idea.
It's the same thing as when you put a new course in some people make the mistake of pouring pads. You should always wait a while and make sure the course is the way you want it. Most courses are not in thier first design.

Jul 29 2008, 04:15 PM
Also the pad on #3 HAS BEEN LENGTHED in the front by 2 feet and resurfaced, just needs to be framed in the front for a follow through and it will be done.
then on to 13s nightmare pad

OK, full disclosure. We have played the placement with a temp 4x4 post target. We installed a sleeve and the first time it will be played with a basket will be at the Classic. Locals do not get any extra play (although smart ones would practice their upshots). There are 3 dead trees to remove to get it tournament ready.
This will also be a very seasoned tournament as we expect 6 to 8 Advanced Grandmasters, plus a good Pro Masters and Adv Masters turnout.

Brad might I recommend playing to the post. Just because there isn't a basket there doesn't mean you can't throw to it and test it out.
And if anyone is curious yes there will be at least 1 box of TP given away this year.

My back has been bothering me a lot when I disc golf. As you know, I had disc surgery last winter, but I think I went back to disc golf too quickly. I'm cutting back for awhile in hopes of healing the problem so I don't have the sciatica pains pretty much every day.
Thankfully things held out long enough to allow me to play with David Jr consistantly until he got to the point where he is, and thankfully we now have many great disc golf friends like you and Rocky and Wyatt, etc. who can help out.

Ant, you are on the wait list. Your chances are good if you can get me your payment sometime before Monday night.
I turned off online registration late last night (Friday) as I had calls and emails from people who had "checks in the mail". I did not want to oversell online if we had sold out offline, which I thought was the case. Well, the USPS did not deliver any more entry payments today, so there are five spots left. The first five payments I receive get the spots. . If you can get someone to deliver payment at UFO Sunday dubs, your chances are very good. I know folks tried to sign up online, but due to the delay in rectifying online and offline registrations (think "overdrawing a two party check-book"), I decided to sell the last few spots in the medium in my control. At the time, I thought we actually were full, and those checks may arrive Monday, but there is a window for those that can get me their $$. I apologize to those disapointed online, but I did not want to tell someone that their online registration did not count because we turned off online reg too late. .

After final Wed Dubs, there may be more cash for pro add-in. How much more do the 8 pros who are going to cash need to split? Right now there is a 175% pro payout! With player packs, AMs are getting 130% back. This is on top of the lunches provided.

Great workday today. Put finishing touches on #13 pad, rehabed the #4 planting area, and dropped the blocking trees in the long #9 fairway. During the upcoming week we need to spread some mulch, update the tee signs and do some final mowing as the rain has given the greenery new life. Looking like we are set up for the best Classic ever.
dhm24112
Aug 31 2008, 11:46 PM
The bad news: The basket is in the new placement on number 9 and we played Sunday doubles to it, so it will not premiered at the Classic as planned.
The good news: It is playing as intended as a true par 4 and I like it. Of the 9 pairs who played today, there were four pars and five bogey fives. This hole punishes a failure to set up your approach shot. Length is 416 feet. An accurate drive and upshot can yield a birdie three.
All the baskets have been moved to the round one long positions. Only hole 18 will change (to the C position) for round two.
Don't forget Friday doubles will start promptly at 5 PM to beat the darkness and 8 PM park closure.

Dan were there any putts for three that were missed. Auntie gale informed me after playing yesterday that there are still two trees that (to him) need to be removed. I know I missed another work day but is there anything that needs to be done. I plan on checking the hole out tonight if I don't work too late.
Parman
Sep 02 2008, 03:56 PM
I am a big, fat whiner. That said, I think they should be removed. Nailing the landing area from the tee is no easy feat. I had a clear look at the basket but the 2 less-than-4" wide trees stood there laughing at me. MJ, Buddy and I played 2 rounds. On 9 we had one 3, three 4's and two 5's. Solid separation for the hole. Just consider the removal. I believe I would have had a three instead of a four the first round. In a long way, all I'm saying is I hit the landing zone, and I didn't have a good line for my upshot. All other scores on the hole would not have changed.
phluffhead
Sep 02 2008, 04:37 PM
I see an easy rightie skip shot if you make the landing zone which I believe is 90% of the hole. Because if you're short or long it's a pitch to there. Were the trees on the right or left side. I remember talking to Freddie about the three hollys on the left and one tree hanging over on the right
Parman
Sep 02 2008, 06:25 PM
The two trees sit in the middle (left side of middle) of the upshot line from the landing area of a good tee shot. Specifically, I was by the large Poplar(I think it's a Poplar) which is on the left side of the fairway from the tee. You pass right by it on your way to the next tee.
dhm24112
Sep 02 2008, 09:35 PM
I am glad to get the feedback on long 9 and I know there will be much more. Right now it is a tough par 4 that punishes a less than very accurate setup shot which misses the narrow landing zone. I liken it to the 90 degree turns on Renny Gold # 7(at the entrance corner) and #17, or Hornet's # 16 (if that is the sharp left turn up the hill). Miss the small landing zone, it probably costs a stroke. The trees should stay for now and we shall see how it plays. If the feed back and scores make it seem too hard, we can act. As a hole gets played it gets easier as it gets beaten in. I don't think we should remove trees we can't replace until we know more.

By looking at this flyer (http://www.pixsvr.com/pics/pdgasignup/2008/Hickory%20Disc%20Golf%20Classic%2008%20FLYER.pdf), the TD did a good job publishing the refund policy for this event (btw....I see no "hurricane exception" clause.... ). Being that the refund expiration date(s) have come and gone, I'd be thankful the TD is allowing you the option to sell your spot. TD could have easily said "no refund for you" and either added cash to the division or chalked up your entry to tournament expenses, TD bonus, etc...
MTL21676

Maybe if I had known a hurricane was coming a few months ago when I signed up....
I would say that a hurricane is a pretty good excuse for a refund.
TDs want people to sign up for their events and then don't give refunds when stuff like this happens....I just don't understand it.

Brad, it is a combination of the forecasted weather and a money issue. There was supposed to be another golfer joining us on a trip, but his plans changed. So the trip will cost more than we had planned. As for me, I have tons of school work that I need to take care of, something I didn't take into account that I probably should have. Also, Rob doesn't want to have to drive 3+ hours in the pouring rain, and neither do I. I would love to come being that I am the defending champ, but I think the reasoning behind changing my mind is clear. If you could sell both of our spots Brad, it would be greatly appreciated!!!! I believe that both spots for Kirk and JJ are filled and that Dan will be taking care of getting your money back. Now Sheffys spot. Course is looks Great.
#9 is interesting. I came up a little short of the landing zone but my trusty partner Freddy was able to throw a S shot up to 23 away for the 3. Me being lefty had no shot from my drive. Placement is everything on this drive.
Auntie Gale- I saw the two trees that you are referring to. However those aren't supposed to be in the middle. The last time I saw this hole those trees were on the left edge of fairway with some hollys. Due to them taking out the holly trees, they now stand alone and seem to be in the fairway. There is plenty of room to go around them or hole would be too easy. I vote keep them. The two groups with me scored 3s.
J. Knox almost scored the 306 dollars yesterday by chaining out on 10 long. It was suck to watch from 11 teebox, I thought it was an up shot but still took the 25 CTP. Nice lefty shot got to love the local routes.
Dan how many spots for the Classic did the Wednesday Dubs end up paying?

I have been watching TWC and the projected course for Hanna crosses the OBX early Saturday. The worst we should get is rain Saturday with some wind. Just bring rain gear and lots of towels. We play unless there is lightning or debris flying in the wind.
I am working to accomadate those who have opted to drop out. Thanks to BS for linking up sellers and buyers. If the buyer gets the $$ to me, I'll pass it on to the seller. If the transaction is direct, so much the better.
I was looking forward to leaving registration behind when we filled on Aug. 23, but it was not to be.

You mean like a wait list?
dhm24112
Sep 04 2008, 02:32 PM
No, I mean that is how someone who sells their spot will get their money. I would prefer a direct exchange between buyer and seller and thus have one less task added to my "TO DO" list. Just let me know.
FYI: I have updated the players list online. Fewer pros are splitting that hefty cash addin.

What's up with deleting your post, not man enough to leave it up there.
Sorry I really don't want you at any tourney I play at whether it's my hometown or not. I'm sick and tired of hearing your lame arse stories over and over again, your nose and arse picking and over poor hygiene. Oh I was the one who contacted Howie for ya just so I would have to see ya again this year and hopefully for a long time. Laaaaaater BuZZ

Or drinking too much beer at NC state.
Wow I can't wait to see the payout with so little Pros. I think next year the Add cash should go to Food and Adv. Grandmaster especially since they raised all the money

Your second reason might have helped my wrist along a little bit. But now I'm having to sleep with wrist splints on so my wrist don't curl and possibly looking at surgery over X-mas.

Yes, we should increase the pay out for grandmasters. We have more supplies to buy, like Rx, oil's, ointments, etc etc.
Hanna decreases much more, it will become a tropical phart.

OK Baggers, here we go, 1 more hour of work, and tommorow early am, I get to go see alllll the baggers. I think the Grandmasters should get a mulligan, or at least play from the shorts. Were used to things being shorter than they once were, like our distance hehe.

Yeah, yeah, do what makes you happy. You know you love THC, and I love Hickory, but I'm trying to get more out of life these days then just disc golf. So much to do, so little time. Yes, it's true! Tomorrow in Boone, in junction with the Daniel Boone Days Festival, Wendy and I are planning on participating in helping to set a new Guiness Book of World Record for the most people to be photoed wearing Coon hats in one place! Definitely something to be proud of. :D ;) :)
Hard to please everyone, hope you guys enjoy it!!!

Oh yeah, thought of one thing that got lost. Big ups to Charlie Sealey for his win in AdvMasters. He was solid as a rock through all four rounds. As a side note, I know he was touched when his long lost brother Barry showed up at Sunday lunch to root for him during the fourth round...... although I think I heard Barry muttering something about, "I just figured you'd collapse dude and I didn't want to miss it." Ahhh, brotherly love. ;) /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif :D:D:D

Great job Hickrites on putting on such a fun and laid back event! Top class all the way! Really appreciated the lunch both days, and the course looked awesome!
Does anyone know why it was so quiet, peaceful, and enjoyable? I just can't put my finger on it, but there was obviously a much better vibe out there than most of the other NC events. It was almost like the thought of negativity wasn't allowed there this weekend.
