I received a phone call from James Diel this monring informing me that Richard Mitchel was involved in a bad accident on the way home from the Dovillio mini.
He was on his motorcycle going home on 412. All we know at this time is a car made a u-turn in front of him and he went through the driver side window and hit the passenger side airbag. From there he was life flighted to St Johns in Tulsa. He did have his helmet with him in his side saddle bag.
I was able to see him this monring and talk with him, he is doing great considering the details and the fact he didn't have a helmet on. His face and head are a are a little banged up but no loss there. :D
I was told he will have the first of two surgeries this afternoon to repair a shattered pelvis and sacrum. Other than that he was extremely lucky. He will have to endure a long recovery time though.
His wife, Barbara will call this evening to let us know how the surgery went.
Please keep Richard and Barbara in your prayers. ;)

Dave, will you be posting an update on Mitchel's condition. If you would I would appreciate it. I think that would be better than inundating the hospital with calls. Perhaps you could let us know how long he will be in the hospital and where we could send cards.

As of 8:00pm last night he had not had surgery. There were two trauma patients ahead of him, since he is stable. I haven't heard but I expect them to do his first surgery this morning sometime. As soon as I get an update, I will post ASAP.

Richard is doing well from his surgery, has a lot of pain but that is to be expected. They said the surgery went SO well that he will not need any additional surgeries that they can tell.
I was even told that they had him stand up this morning. :o ****! That had to hurt.
He should be out of ICU soon and into a regular room. When they move him, I'm sure he would welcome some visitors. ;) We'll keep you posted.

To be honest. You shouldn't go. There will probably be a ambulance near by and you know how hard it is for you to not chase one when they go by. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
On top of that, Mitchell has told me several times that your trashing skills on the board lack the years of experience that Wise and I have. I just don't want you to be discouraged and give up before your time little buddy. ;)

There you go aligning yourself with Wise in order to make yourself look better.
You have no trashing skills. If you were someone I did not like it would be a lot tougher for you around here.
I have Wise as my avatar, but I could switch it to you just as easy!

Aligning myself with Wise does not make me look any better. If anything it makes me look bad since insurance companies really don't pay,,,,,they just offer settlements for less than you "as a lawyer someday" will be asking.
Wise lost the trash war when he decided to go "snitch". I let him ride on my coatails only because his flat head makes a good ash tray holder.
You can switch to me as your avatar at anytime since I am your ultimate Superhero. :)

i went out to richards place today.the material to assemble a ramp is currently assembled as a pool deck. the pool deck must be dissasembled with care to salvage enough material for the ramp.
i will be heading out tomarrow to begin the salvage process, anyone out there that can lend a hand can call me 918-694-7280.
once the pool deck is apart the materials need to be moved from the neighbors place to the construction area of the ramp, we will need to remove the existing nails to make the material readilly usable.there does appear to be enough material there if it salvaged well and not torn up during the disassembly.

I went in for a visit yesterday. Richard looks amazingly well considering all that he has been through. He had a leggy brunette physical therapist putting him through his paces, and he was doing so well that she said he had "graduated" from her care for a while. She gave him an execise sheet, and started talking about when he could go home. This got him sort of P.O.'d (I think because she was kind of cute, and he was going to miss that daily attention) and he started giving everbody s**t. Yep, he is back to his old self. I was very reasurred.
I wanted to do something for him, so since I used to work at St. John, and do still know the ropes there a bit, I went down to radiology and got a friend of mine to make Richard some copies of his "after" X-rays. Before surgery he had what is called an "open book" fracture, where the left ilium had split its attachment from the sacrum in the back, allowing the symphysis pubis to spread apart and open up in the front. The bones themselves were not shattered, but the usual attachments were ripped and broken apart.
The "after" x-rays show everything put back together perfectly with a plate and 6 screws holding the symphysis back together, and with one screw though the left sacro-iliac joint holding the ilium to the sacrum. This sacro-iliac attachment will take weeks to strengthen (probably 6 or more) and Richard won't be allowed to bear weight on his left leg until then.
Except for a couple of well-healed lacerations, his head seems fine, despite not wearing a helmet.
OK, so those of you who haven't had a chance to drop by while he was in the hospital should make a plan to see Richard at home when you get a chance. He's worried about not being able to get up and fix lunch on the days that Barbara's at work, so give him a call first, and bring him a sandwich or something if he is there by himself. He may go home today.

decking from the neighbors is dismantled but still riddled with nails that will need to be removed or cut off. mitchal is home now ,saturday james deil and i are going out to assemble the ramp. it would be nice if we had some hands and backs to relocate the material to richards place. the materials are about 150 yards from the location where the ramp will be built.

Richard came out for the Riverside Glide on Sunday and hung out for a while. He seems to be doing pretty good. Gary Nail pushed him around in his wheel chair. They followed our card for about four holes and two holes into it, I go from -6 to -1, All his fault. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif He just showed up and my shots went OB. :o
He said it felt good to be out of the house and in the sun. It was good to seem back out again though, even if it did cost me 5 strokes. :D
jgeurin
Jul 14 2008, 09:19 AM
Yes - He was sitting in the shade next to my card's starting hole, hollering out editorial comments about our shot selection. Later on, after the day's rounds were over (and after observing me throw OB 4 times) he was threatening to drop back down to Advanced Grandmaster (my class), play in his wheelchair, and still kick our butts with ease by using the 2-finger seated drive, superior disc golf judgement, and his reliable putting skills. I'd say, from a purely professional perspective of course, that his recovery is proceeding right on track. ;)
Seriously though, he did look very good, and though he is not yet allowed to bear weight on the left leg, he may get to start doing it in a few days or weeks, depending on what his doctor says at a follow up visit later on this week.
