Vinnie- you were the biggest critic from our last event...We had a problem with baskets and printers, it happens!!! People find out who they can count on when something like that happens...
If you knew anything about our series we said initially that at two of our five qualifiers we would have a $500 Skins Match!! So, no I cant say yes or no whether we will be doing one at this event!!!
We just need people to be supportive and not so **** critical!!! Which I can only think of a couple that havent been..Not everyone has td'd 100 events, not everyone has the number of active club members that some of us have. So for the last year and the 8 events we have run, this was the first time any major problem happened. period....confused...

In Mike's Defense...I was not there at the Beeville Tournament, but I was made aware of all the mishaps that occurred. Unfortunately, Third Coast is a pretty small club in the grand scheme of things, and so we're only as reliable as the members we put our faith in, and the word they give us that they have things under control. Mike has undertaken this entire tournament year after some other idividuals were not able to assist in the same capacity they had promised. Sure, there are a lot of should've, could've, would've from that weekend, but the point is it was what it was, and all we can do is learn from our misstakes and ensure that they don't happen again. Did we, as a club, bite off more than we can chew? Possibly, but the bottom line is we have several people in this town who love the game of Disc Golf and are trying to do all that we can to provide tournaments locally that everyone can participate in and enjoy. We will continue to do our best, and continue to welcome constructive criticism. Again, on behalf of Third Coast Disc Golf, I apologize for the situations in Beeville, but please don't think we would ever do anything purposely to jeopardize our club's reputation.

We just need people to be supportive and not so **** critical!!!
I am supportive of all events bettering Texas Golf....and the 3rd coast events are good for Texas. But you can run the best events forever...all it take is one bad one to ruin all the that good work.
Vinnie- you were the biggest critic from our last event
I wasn't the biggest, I am the only one pointing out the issues with corrective solutions.
I want this very clear with you and the 3rd coast...I want to help and if there is anything I can do I will.
Thats alot different from complaining and not have a solution. With the amount events, cost of traveling to events.....It is very important to the player to know what is going on. I plan on being at the event....but I shouldn't have to ask ....whens the players meeting?
Now lets quit talking about the past and move on to the present.

3rd coast maybe small but Texas is big and there are plenty of resourses outside 3rd coast that asked could and will help!
And no I aint grumpy.
I have played two events this year that fell short of PDGA expectations and we can't ask the PDGA for N.T. events or USDGC spots if we are running 2 day minis

I would love to have some running water on the course, totally different course!!!
SADC has the course looking awesome, alt holes will not be easy....
For those interested, SADC just began league play at McClain Park, Wednesdays at 6pm Sharp(Scott H.). From shorter tees, but still very challenging....
It looks like you might get your wish ... forecast calls for rain today. If it rains that will definately add water to holes 16 & 17 and may add water to holes 5 & 6.

Luckily McClain has a lot of shade. Be sure to stay in the shade.
We'll have water on the course too so bring refillable containers. I believe we'll also be vending gatorade at the main pavillion during play and between rounds.

See previous post regarding water.
Regarding the temp holes ...
The tee signs should be in place, OB string is in place, and the basket locations will be marked with spray paint but the baskets won't be in place until Saturday morning.

1. once you have flyers with entry fees already circulating and have taken some sign ups you need to leave the price whatever the flyer says.. some masters paied $65 and some paied $70 :) glad I was one of the $65 ones.
also if you post information on here like
Final round will begin at 9:30 am on Sunday
then you need to start at 9:30 not 9:00.. there were people that were late to there hole due to this issue. thank you for running events and giving us golfers something to do.. but once it is in print you need to leave as is..

On behalf of the San Antonio Disc Club I want to thank 3rd Coast for having one of their 6 pack series events at McClain. We really enjoyed having all the players (91 players!) out at the course. The SADC and its members have worked really hard on improving this course since last summer and it is great to see such a good response to play an event at this course. We hope everyone had a great time and look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming events.

I think with the amount of tournaments we have as qualifiers it makes it more about who plays the most VS who plays the best. It is just kind of hard to hit 90% of TX B-tiers to have a shot with gas the way it is.
gnduke
Jun 25 2008, 09:23 AM
That is part of the reason behind the method.
Participation counts and it should encourage the top pros to attend the smaller B-Tiers.
As of the San Antonio Bud Open, we have played 22 events.
184 different Texas Pros have competed in at least one event.
Of those 184 players:
86 have competed in exactly 1 event.
28 have competed in more than 5 events.
10 have competed in 10 or more events.
5 of those 10 have never had a top 5 finish (with all non-texas players removed and all pros grouped together)
The two leaders have played in 13 and 11 events.

so do you get more points by beating more people in your division or by winning the division you are entered in? I would think the more players you beat the more points you should get it seems to add more pressure when playing against other high rated players.

Jun 25 2008, 11:02 AM
its by score
gnduke
Jun 25 2008, 12:32 PM
It's by score, with a maximum number of points per event.
20 points for a B-Tier
30 points for an A-Tier
All events of the same tier carry the same max value so areas with large events do not have an advantage over events with less of a player pool. You never know when you sign up and travel to an event how many opponents will choose to show up. You should not be penalized for winning an event that only a handful of people chose to attend.
It's also to help increase participation of the top players at the smaller B-Tiers and maybe free up some of the C-Tiers for the local Pros.

So instead of being punished you are rewarded at the smaller events because you can get 15 points for 5th out of 10 just like the other guy who gets 5th out of 20.

Jun 25 2008, 01:09 PM
Yes, that would be part of the incentive to attend smaller outlying events.
If you planned carefully, you could score very well by picking the events with small pro fields. I don't think you could win without doing fairly well in a few of the larger events too though.
There were only a handful of events (three) last year that failed to have at least 20 pro players from Texas in attendance. So 5th place is still ahead of quite a few players.

very interesting.. I vote next year we send the person from Texas who does the most promotion and good for the sport in the state of TEXAS. be a true ambassador for our state for the sport not just a player who can attend the most tournaments. or maybe even take suggestion on how to get our representative through asking the current TEXAS PDGA MEMBERS. just my thoughts.
Congrats V on the Texas spot.

It also discourages players from traveling to out of state events. Maybe the qualifiers should just be 5 events with the same system we currently have just fewer events. I really don't like the quantity Vs quality aspect.

No, if you go to the memorial the same weekend as a TX event you get nothing. Why don't we just do it by PDGA points? I don't like the PDGA points but at least those who travel will be encouraged to do so.

all ideas for sure. I just dont think its the best way to do this having the same guidelines every year which are put in place by same person every year. I guess its time to run for texas state coordinator position if I want change ... :D
or just do it by highest rated TEXAS player who has not already qualified since we all love ratings so much

There have been several perfectly good threads about this in the past. Before I started doing it, it was done by whoever asked first. I tried to have it decided by a single tournament, ended up a couple of thousand in the hole on that one. The players wanted a competitive method, I wanted to promote the smaller outlying events. We could put it up on EBAY in late June.
It looks like Vinnie is going to win this year by playing 15 events in a year. He is likely to play a 16th as well, but that may not be necessary. That means he missed 8 events. Next year there will be even more to choose from because of the number of A-Tiers and new B-Tiers that have started this year.
If you have a better way that does not have me making a subjective decision (as in picking the disc golfer that most promotes the sport), I'm all ears. I may not use the idea, but I most certainly will listen and consider anything objective that promotes disc golf across the entire state.
Besides, I'd pick myself the first year under that plan.

Jun 26 2008, 12:37 AM
Why not give points for all B-tiers and above instead of just Texas. It is hard for us up in DF/W to drive to drive down south all the time. And I think N/T points should def count for the tex rep spot.
gnduke
Jun 26 2008, 11:04 AM
Because I am not going to check the results for every event in the country (or world) searching for Texas players.
If I did find one, how should I rate his performance? In Texas events all non-Texas players are removed from the event and players grouped together by score before the finish order is established. If he is the only one there he would be in first place.
As it stands, Austin players have an advantage. But they have an advantage because the TDs in that area have stepped up and started running more B-Tier and above events while DFW and Houston are slowing. Northwest Texas is going gangbusters. Sanctioned events are on the rise and participation numbers are looking very good. They are doing something right out there. That is a good thing and part what I see as my job. I don't think they are directly related to the USDGC spot, but it doesn't hurt either.
The rules are simple, objective, consistent, and reward participation as well as performance.

Gary,
I like the state of the state part of that post. I'd like to see more stuff like that. An address or assessment of trends in Texas by the SC would be nice to see at least yearly. I don't much care if it's posted here, on lsdga.com, or even if I have to sign up for an email group. It's good information for those of us that are involved locally but don't travel much.
Thanks.

yeah, yeah, sure, sure.
As I said, my goals are to promote tournaments across Texas, especially those in smaller markets. I don't care to promote anything outside of Texas. I won't choose based on ratings because you only need about one event a year to maintain a rating. I don't want any system where I am personally choosing a player, or my choice would be me the first year.
I believe that the best 4-5 players in Texas should qualify by the normal process, not the State Representative spot. I don;t want it going to the best player, but to the player that is the most involved in events all across Texas. They still have to do fairly well and play consistently, but the best should be getting in by the front door.
