One other thing--registration is set to close at 90. If the event fills early and there is a long wait list, we will open up 3 additional holes to make it two rounds of 21 to allow a total of 105 players. Be sure to pre-register. I will not expand to 21 holes the day of the event. If it does not fill ahead of time, registration will cut off at 90 the day of the event.

PM me if you would like to register by cash or check and I can get the sign-up sheet to you.

Just to entice you a bit more to fill this event early, the three holes I plan on adding if necessary are from the extra loop we added on day 2 of last year's VPO.

Also, many thanks to Don O'Connell for helping with the line art for the tourney-stamped discs and for being the first to register!

On July 12, 2008 the City of Crowley will be hosting their Celebration of Freedom event at Bicentennial Park. There will be lots of food vendors, kids rides, wrestling matches, bands playing all day, and of course a disc golf tournament. The city has also spent over $10,000.00 for the fireworks display for that night. They guarantee that it will be the best Fireworks dispaly in Tarrant County.

Our regularly scheduled Saturday mini will be moved back to 1:00 p.m. due to me having to be in the parade. The format for this mini will be flip doubles. We will play red, white and blue tees. The City of Crowley is going to offer $150.00 added cash for this event. The top three teams will get some of this cash. There will be an $8.00 entry fee as usual and we will be playing for the ace pot as well.

What do yall think a 1000 rated round will be.

my_hero
Jul 09 2008, 02:05 PM
Well it depends on the SSA of the layout and what everyone(the propagators) shoots. I'd be willing to bet that a 1000 rated round on the regular 18 is -2 to -3.

gregbrowning
Jul 09 2008, 02:37 PM

whats a propagator??? where im from in the south...its usually an alligator in a tuxedo....so how does that relate to dg????

my_hero
Jul 09 2008, 03:36 PM
LOL.

Your rating for each round is based on how well you shoot relative to a scratch player who is defined as someone with a rating of 1000. The Ratings Committee can calculate your rating even if there are no 1000 rated players playing that round. In fact all that is needed are 5 players with ratings over 799 playing the same course whose rating is based on at least 8 rounds of information. These players are called "propagators."

hallp
Jul 09 2008, 03:42 PM

Jul 09 2008, 03:49 PM
All players who have at least 8 rated rounds and are 799 or higher are considered a propagator. You were even a prop last year.

You're a good looking guy, shouldn't have any self esteem problems. Besides, C-tiers (cheap entry fees) are when the up and comers SHOULD be testing the pro waters. The way the rules are written you can accept cash and still play ADV in bigger tiered tournaments so long as your rating doesn't get above (something like) 970.

Don't worry about what i'm doing. Worry about the 1 shot in front of you. Not the shots in the past, not the holes in the future. Take it 1 shot at a time and you'll do just fine.

Remember what i told you on #5's tee a year or more ago; this game is a game of probability. Throw shots that are more probable to go your way than not. When the basket is down to your left why throw a flippy roc off of the elevated tee pad when you can throw an overstable crow/drone....or even a predator that is 99% of the time going to fall towards the basket. :D

With some help from Chris Flesner, our Competition Director, we have decided on the layout for both rounds of the Fling.

All Divisions will play from the concrete tees in the first round.

For the second round, Intermediate and Recreational divisions will play from the concrete tees again. Open and Advanced divisions will play from the concrete tees with the exception of Championship 1, 13, 17, and 18. IF we have spotters available, we will also play Championship 8.

All baskets will be in the long positions except the following:
4 (1st round only)
12
13 (first round only)
14
18 (first round only)..

Flippy ROC? :)

John - you should make the ROC VS BUZZ Challenge in OKC

Can't remember what event it was, maybe club championships, but Phillip threw a flippy Roc off of #5 and it ended up waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the trees near #7's tee. He made a great 5 from there but with the level of players that play Vets you can't afford to give away 2-3 strokes on 1 hole.....ever!

I would LOVE to play the Roc vs. Buzzzz challenge but until these kids are older you won't see me traveling very far. I wonder what Discraft would say about that anyway? :D

one is on the sidewalk to the left of the shade tree that is behind the regular teepad

13 is next to the shade tree that is behind 12's long bucket

17 is next to a tree that is sort of between 15's teepad and the pavilion

18 is the dirt right behind the sidewalk that leads to hole 8, so if you are walking from 17 to 18 you would walk down the sidewalk to the bridge, well the champ tee is on the left side of the sidewalk before you get to the bridge, essentially right behind, a long ways behind the regular tee pad.

Just trying to enrich everyone's day sir. Commonly, people will use the word "epitome" in the wrong sense. Contrary to popular belief, it does not mean "to exemplify or be the best of" anything;

epitome: a typical or ideal example

In this sense, what I was trying to convey was the fact that though Mr. My-sear-o at one time was the "typical" golfer, he is no longer even that. Probably on the same level with other past typical golfers, such as Mr. Bacon, or Brandon, the gentelman that attacked Hamster-o with the bat when he took off with a basket that was not his for the taking.

The only brewery I can think of is in Fort Worth and it isn't that good. There are a couple of good bars in the area that offer some microbrews though.

If you can drive 20 min I would go to the Flying Saucer down town fort worth. I think the have over 300 beers to choose from, with a good portion of them being on tap.

I may be having some second thoughts on expanding, simply for safety's sake. Saturday is looking to help this event truly live up to its name, and an extra 6 holes in that heat may not be the best of ideas. I'd like some feedback from you guys before I make the final decision.

42 holes from the concrete and championship pads in the heat is too much. Especially since the senior citizen layout won't be used.

As one who was a Paramedic for 5 years, let me tell you all what you should or at least may know already.
Taking in plenty of fluids during the round IS NOT ENOUGH! You must hydrate prior to exposing yourself to possible dehydration!! If you don't get plenty of fluids in your system early by the time you realize your dehydrating it is usually TOO LATE!
The more you sweat the more fluid you need to take in. If you stop sweating your in deep trouble friend.
Just a bit of friendly advice hopefully taken in the spirit in which it was meant. No one wants to see anyone go down.
Lets all have fun and be safe.
Good luck and see you all Saturday.

At least it's only one day now, the first 2 years of this event was like playing in a convection oven.

I also want to give a HUGE thanks to all you for pre-registering. Doing so will help us make sure we get started on time and can get out of the park and home at a reasonable hour.

This is my first PDGA event to run, so forgive me for any glitches in the process. I'll do my best to make sure everything is run as smoothly as possible. In return, all I ask is that everyone be on their best behavior. PDGA Rule 804.05 A(4) will be strictly enforced. We do NOT have an alcohol permit for this event, so in between rounds, you need to keep your beers out of the pavilion.

If you are familiar with the "old course" it will be Old 1, Old 2, and Old 9. If you are not familiar with these, it is a loop of three holes following hole 17 on the other side of the sidewalk, going up toward the restrooms and back down.

Don't get me wrong, I can battle the heat and the long rounds but this is beginning to feel like playing a whole weekends worth of golf in 1 day.

True. I just know that all day in this heat is about my limit. If it had been a two day I wouldn't have played for the simple fact i probably would have left the course in an ambulance. As it was, I battled severe dehydration for three days after this year's PIASO. Ask longerbone about how well I do in the heat. He had to watch me puke all over the Pizza Hut bathroom in Shreveport a couple of years ago! As it is, I'll be playin. I just wanted a heads up early, so if I didn't play it would be that much easier to fill the spot.
On to better things. I didn't see anyones predictions for ADV but,I think Dalton has a real good chance for two wins in a row. That being said, I now know how it feels to have someone half your age beat the snot out of you. OMBs got it easy! lol

Let's show Doc B why he'll never run another sactioned event again. Let us all, to the man (and woman) show up and play doubles today. I assure you that most will want to kick him in his Guinea nads Saturday, when the battle has ended, but will not be able to muster the strength. So come out today, starting at 1600, get your doubles round in. Once the battle has ended and we all have the ability to draw breath, let us all gather around him and pummel his family jewls like Gerry Cooney. Looking forward to seeing all the faithful at the Vet today with their boxing gloves.

Man, I keep seeing all these post about the heat...and how hot it's going to be, and all this stuff. Is it really that bad? I mean is it just that there is no shade on the course? It seems to always be 100 degrees out here in West Texas during a tourney. In Big Springs we play 2 of 27 in 100 degrees, then another 27 on sunday....Abilene is 100+ normally...Heck even our biggest singles event here in San Angelo(the crush..plug...plug :p) in March sometimes gets that hot(normally it's more like high 80s though)...it has been 50 before though

I guess what I am asking is....are you guys putting heaters around the course or what? This is just a normal Texas summer day right..... :D

Day of...can't wait to get out of work and on the road!!! We're 4hrs away!!!

Is there any reason for us to check in today? We probably won't get there till 8ish.

west texas doesn't have the humidity that we have here. 100 degrees in Arlington and 100 degrees in San Angelo are very different things. It's really not going to be insufferable, but you will need to prepare yourself. Like Fah-Teague says, hydrate yourself!

I would recomend frezing some water the night before so you arn't drinking hot water all day. This really made a difference for me in Crowley since you can't count on the water jugs to be full when you get to them.

We will have at least 5 water jugs out on the course Saturday, possibly 8. I will also have 80 bottles of Powerade and 100 bottles of water available for $1 each at the pavilion so you can hydrate before hole 1 and hole 5.

Jul 18 2008, 12:28 PM
yeah 40% is a low day for most of the summer. And yes, Houston is more humid, but I was trying to prepare him for the difference.

Average relative humidity for DFW is historically higher than San Angelo's. It's something to be aware of. If this weekend is supposed to be near 70% humidity, the heat index will be much higher than it normally is in West Texas at the same temperature.

humidity tomorrow is supposed to be around 40-45%...if the air temp was 95F and the humidity was 70%, the heat index would be 120+F and we'd all be dead by lunch...the max heat index tomorrow is supposed to be less than 100 so it shouldn't be too bad.

however, for some reason the vet ALWAYS seems alot hotter than anywhere else...maybe it's all the rock on those hills that absorb the heat, but even when it's in the 70's you can feel the heat out there.

disclaimer: i failed thermodynamics...got a B the 2nd time though

DOC65
Jul 18 2008, 12:45 PM
Humidity can start out at about 70% in the morning. But once the sun comes up and the air heats up the humidity will drop. At the worst of it you can expect about 40%-46% humidity on typical days. Get a small shower and that all goes out the window.

And what Brian said since he was quicker with the submit button than I was. :)

my_hero
Jul 18 2008, 12:46 PM
Given your forecast, the chart a few posts above reads a heat index of 110*-115* if it's 100* with 45% humidity.

dryhistory
Jul 18 2008, 12:47 PM
100 deg at 70% humidity is a heat index of 144, red - heat stroke likely with prolonged exposure :cool:we should call it the heat index fling not the Fahrenheit Fling :D

bcoxxx
Jul 18 2008, 12:51 PM
the high is supposed to be 96 or 97, and at that time the humidity will be down to 30% or so...which leaves the heat index almost identical to the air temp...so the heat index is supposed to stay below 100 all day...there is an inverse relationship between air temp and relative humidity...when the temp rises the humidity must go down.

check out the hourly forecast at weather.com

the average relative humidity for DFW in the afternoon in July is 52%, according to the NOAA. Since teague said 70% in the morning I (without looking it up to be sure) assumed that 45+ was viable for the afternoon.
