The 2008 USADGC!
http://www.midgp.com/index.html
Held annually at the INFAMOUS 'TOBOGGAN' Course in Kensington Metropark in Milford, Mi.
Players with a rating over 915 can go play a qualifying round tuesday, wednesday, or thursday and qualify no matter what score they shoot due to their rating being over 915.
Everybody with a rating UNDER 915 must shoot a qualifying round of at least 915 to enter the event...
During last year's event a 66 (+4) round was rated 922... (remember this course has 6 par 4's and even a par 5!)
Qualifying rounds are $20 each.
The player's pack has ALWAYS been one of the major drawing points for players in previous years..
This year's player's pack includes: (Valued at $180)
--Embroidered Chair
--2 Discs
--1 Mini (this will be a super color with your mugshot & PDGA# on it!)
--1 Hat
--2-3 Towels (embroidered)

check the pics on the site, its an incredibly beautiful track- like a huge, green, private oasis...
it plays long but fair, stay in the middle, go for the ones you can, set up for the next shot...
no rushing from course to course, wishing you had another chance at this or that hole, you'll get a teetime once a day for 3days, quality card-mates to play with, water &/or snack tents along the way, and once you're done and tallied a bbq/pasta/some kind of deluxe lunch awaits as you grab some shade and rest up reliving the round with everyone trickling in...prepare to play your good holes that way again and plan ways to play the bad ones better...
worlds is a bigger thing- like a set of mini-tournies playing several courses and the biggest fields of the year- fun no doubt but perhaps part of the amNat appeal is- for me- the more intimate, almost private feel... the details like teetimes, meals waiting after, and phat players packs... the fun stuff the discraft guys do to give away even more and all for the price of what some Btier's are charging nowadays... add it up and you've got a true major that you won't forget, a course you'll replay in your head forever and of course friends on the links for life...
...can't miss man
I'd reg right now if my 4th kid weren't due that wknd
(give it another week and Ill prob reg anyway!)

I'm confused, are you saying you have to qualify for the play in tournament? This makes it sound like players over 915 rating are automatically in the USADGC as long as they show up a day early.
mmmm....Toboggan...makes me want to play for plastic again...

I think what its saying is that they basically want proof that you can play at least 915 rated golf. Either way, this event is absolutely amazing. I missed the prize line by a stroke last year and I still had the best time I'd had at any tournament all year! Amateur Nationals is a blast, bar none the best anyone treats Ams.

I did that last year, and it was again totally worth it. The course and the tourney are UNPARALLELED at the amateur level.

So you're saying that all the waitlisters get in for the most part? I find that hard to believe, I thought that usually the event is restricted to only previously qualified Ams.
This is definitely the premiere disc golf event for Ams IMO. Bowling Green is big and Worlds is Worlds, but Milford is the real deal...

There probably isn't. The tournament staff itself doesn't promote it much, either, at least not outside of the Great Lakes Region. There used to be an ad in DGW every year. Not sure if they're advertising in the new magazine or not.
Also, unlike USDGC, there used to be very little communication between the US Am Nationals and their qualifying events. At the Wide Open, we couldn't even congratulate the qualifiers, because Am Nationals never sent us a list of previously qualified players, and the website was never up-to-date (that appears to have improved this year). Of course, we're no longer a qualifier. Guess Am Nationals doesn't want players from this region's best event.
Also, moving the tournament into the spring sort of eliminates a lot of good, potential qualifying events. The best event in our region isn't a qualifier, probably because it's only a week before Am Nationals (and was two weeks after it last year). It seems this tournament would do a lot better if it was back in September.

It is fairly difficult. I've noticed that the primary competitors, as a result of being the Amateur Nationals, tend to be younger guys. Might have something to do with the probability of the brunt of the amateurs wanting to travel just as they're getting settled in to the semester?
Not saying this IS it, just a thought from a bystander.

If I ever qualified for this tournament it would need to be in summer because, like you said, college is in fall and spring. Alot of Ams are obvioulsy young guys still in school, and having to take days off school to travel really hurts us in the grades dept. I firmly believe all Am Majors should be held in the summer so no one is discriminated against because education is far more important than disc golf.

Well as a photjournalism major I dont have the luxury of missing a class. There's a reason my university, WKU, is #1 in the nation for photojournalism and its because we work our butts off everyday before, during, and after classes. By missing one class I would fail the weekly photo assignment. It's our hard work and dedication which brings in several Pulitzer Prize winning journalists to our college to teach here, and has created several Pulitzer Prize winning journalists.
It may be easy for you to say "Dont play them then!" because I dont know what you do in college, but it's not easy for me because I have to balance both school and personal life while still keeping the integrity and recognition of my college intact.

I suppose so, if that wasnt sarcasm. Hard to tell by the smiley face. It's just the fact that depending on your school and/or major, it's hard to do many of the things you want to personally do. I've already had to miss out on 4 or 5 other tournaments that were earlier in the year because of school. Luckily there are enough one day tourneys in the fall, and some weekends close enough to where I live that I might be able to hit them up. But as for majors, where some last almost a week it would be impossible, and very foolish to miss school just to huck some discs. By keeping alot of the majors in late spring through late summer/early fall this allows thousands of college disc golfers the opportunity to participate. Obviously this does not guarantee they will play, but so long as the opportunity is presented so more players have the chance to go then it does so much for the sport, esp. for the younger people to go out and travel and spread disc golf.

Just busting your chops. Although several championships like Worlds have mostly been between mid-June and mid-August, it limits the southern locations where it would not be pleasant to host them at those times. That's partly why the USDGC and Players Cup are later than August and other big events like BG Ams, The Memorial are before June.

Very very very true. When school is back in session I can go 2 weeks and probably play 1 round that entire time. I know I made a big deal late last year about moving up to Adv. but that plan fell through simply because I never had the time to practice. Even now with classess out for the summer I still dont have time to practice because of work. League has been in session for about 6 or 7 weeks, 4 days a week, and I've probably played 10-12 at most. Priorties suck, but in the long run the sacrifices are worth it. I'm just hoping more larger tournaments will be hosted in the summer, regardless of the region, so more people will have chances to play, and it could attract larger crowds and players to the sport.

You can click here (http://www.midgp.com/scores.html) to see TD Tod White's super reporting of scores, including color-coding hole-by-hole when you click on a player's name. We've got a beautiful sunny day here with a high supposed to be about 81 degrees.
Okay, here's this morning's lead card heading down the fairway to Hole 1. That's Patrick Brown (CA) second from the right - these four guys were all tied at 59 after Friday, but Patrick pulled ahead with a 56 this morning, for the hot round so far this year. As I was writing this the third card came in and Casey Greene had thrown a 58!

There are so many staff for this tournament that it has got to be the easiest event to marshal. I finally had to actually do something official this morning when we spotted a caddy about to go out with a couple of chilled beers in his bag. Few people know that your caddy's actions are your own in a sanctioned event and that player was very glad to hear that before they headed out.

Are you sure about that rule? I was at Am Worlds in 2005 and the B pool was playing Thorpe in the afternoon. The B pool player had a caddy from the A pool that already played Snowbowl and was finished for the day. They asked TD and the other PDGA official if it was alright for the caddy to drink beer while caddying. They said since it was legal to drink in the park and the player was done for the day, that it was not against PDGA rules. They only asked that the beer be kept in a different container as to not cause a distraction to the other players. It was one of the best beers I've had; Fat Tire in a AM/PM cup...

Like so much of the rules, 801.01.D. is vaguer than I'd like, but the Competition Manual 3.5.B. is clearer (and may have not applied in 2005, I do not remember): "A player's caddie is subject to all items within the PDGA Rules of Play and the PDGA Competition Manual."
We've got some home-brewed stuff of Todd White's here for the staff, including the Lizard Lawyer Strain. Pretty good, and I don't even really like beer.

Ha, I could not agree more. Which is why I watched the top card tee off from one, approach & putt 2, tee 3 & I took off. Just walking from 1-2-3 was alomst too much after 4 days of the Toboggan. Excellent tourney!

congrats Daemon on a big win.
he would've had to be granted re-classification as an am to be eligible for the event. being banned from this board doesn't amount to a hill of beans.
i suggest starting a different thread for discussion of am/pro delineation items as doing it here merely diminishes what was no doubt a first class event for all involved. (see japan open thread)

This is always an awesome event. It has to be the very best amateur event for top calibre amateur men. The Tobbogan is an incredible course that challenges you in every way. The tournament is loaded with side games and free food -- seven meals! Caddies and entourage can get in on the side games. I've got 21 new discs on the table, and I did not finish in the prizes. Most of them I bought from my caddy for $5 each, so she must have $75 in her pocket she did not have on Thursday. She'll be practicing her mini tossing skills until next year.
If you are taking a pass on this tournament, you are really missing out on a good one.
And don't skip the speed golf.

You guys all want to make a big deal about Daemon and Mark having accepted cash as pros before. As the one guy with a reason to complain about them, I am not going to be at all. They were granted their amnesties. As a result, they are Ams now. It doesn't matter what they did in the past, what matters is now. This year Daemon Stahlin was the best Amateur at the United States Amateur Disc Golf Championships.
The competition was heated, it was a fantastic time, Todd White runs the best amateur event in the world, and I can't wait to go back and be a part of the staff in 2009.
Congratulations to Daemon on the hottest round in Amateur Nationals history. Congratulations to Mark Roberts on the most consistently sound golf of the top finishers. Great job guys, you both deserve all credit in the world for some solid golf.

congrats on the win, i remember you taking the playoff loss to mills pretty hard two years ago. congrats again on the championship and great comeback
I wonder why he played AMs, it looks like he beat Geoff Bennet back in '07; I didnt think that a reclassified AM could play majors. Not my problem I didnt go to Michigan.

I didnt think that a reclassified AM could play majors. ...
This is the current rule:

Oh, and Matt Odenwelder, the strongest arm in the tournament also pulled off the speed golf win by about 15 seconds if not more. 1:33, he was blazing. Kid is cool as hell too and one of the most laid back people you'll golf with. After playing first round blind he played each round hotter and hotter this weekend. Talent for sure.

Yeah I met Odie at BG Ams warming up for the 2nd round. Talked to him a few times and talked up the AmNationals tournament big time to him all weekend down there. It was great seeing him show up. One of my friends, Justin Gill, played with him 2nd round this weekend and said that it was Odie's positivity that kept him in it all day long.
During the Discraft Test Drive he repeatedly threw Flashes to the top of the hill. I'm talking the sort of distance you saw Robbie Bratten throwing in the Discraft Distance Showcase video on Youtube. Ridiculous arm. I was talking up the Hambrick to him this weekend, hopefully he checks it out.

I didn't see any vomitting this year.....the field was in pretty good shape.
I took 7th in speed golf with a rocketing(for me) 2:28.... Key was the up the hill time. My play:
2 discs (2nd 1st Buzzz and a Cryztal Challenger I won in Lizard Games earlier) alternating.
1. Buzzz to mowed area (about 150 out)
2. Challenger off top of basket to 40 past
3. Buzzz By Basket
4. Challenger Missed Putt
5. Flick Challenger to bottom of hill (then grab buzzz)
6. Buzzz about half way up
7. Challenger Pin high by a pole
8. Buzzz left of basket by trees
9. Challenger Putt
My winnings: 2 Clear Domey Sparkle Z Wasps (non tourney stamps)

I think I walkjogged to a 2:30 or something. :P My strategy:
2 discs (Star Teebird, Cryztal Buzzz)
1. Buzzz to 30 feet from basket
2. Help the spotter look for my disc 80 feet from the basket before deciding it must be closer.
3. Find it 30 feet from the basket.
4. Putt.
5. Walk/Jog and throw back up the hill saying I'll just go again.
6. Be disappointed when Mark Ellis tells me no more people can go.
7. Go find a corner and cry.
Yep!

what daemon says is true, I believe he is automatically sponsored, I am not sure, but the fact still remains, he used the new z force and the results speak for themselves.
The force is an awesome disc, somewhere between a cross of the destroyer and xcaliber.

Wow...I have been playing disc golf off and on for 10 years now, and this was the most impressive tournaments I have attended. Todd and the Disc Craft team went above and beyond to ensure every player felt appreciated. Mark Ellis was definately the master of ceremonies, and the breakfasts and lunches with grateful dead tunes in the background really took it to the next level. Thanks to Jim at Disc Craft for kicking down tons of plastic for give aways.....I can't remember having so much fun at a tournament!!
And for the players who were there, let's give it up for "Peach's", she really made the lizard games interesting to say the least.....what a great sport!
About the course........I'm speechless......it was the bomb, everything you hear about it, does not do it justice.
Quick shout out to Wojo and Jameson who I played with in the final round....we started on the fith card and these boys shot a 56 and 57 to finish 3rd and 7th....way to finish strong, and what a show!!
I have been nominated to run the 2009 BG AMs next spring, so I took a lot of notes.........it made me realize the sacrifices players make to travel to these tournaments.
Looking forward to seeing ya'll at worlds.
