Alright, people I've spoken to are saying great things about the courses and the tourney, so I'm going to try to make it up from Northern VA. It should be just under five hours.
Before planning a trip, I'd love to find a local to crash with and who can show off the courses. My hope is to head up early, early on Friday morning, play both courses during the day, and then crash with someone convenient to the tourney for Friday and Saturday nights.
I'd gladly say "thanks for lodging" by bringing along some extra discs and/or high quality microbrews. Just let me know what you throw/drink.
My preference would be a place where anything of questionable legality is not happening where I will see it/know about it. I don't have a problem with people doing what they want, but if I can help it, I'd rather not be eyewitness to anything that should stay off-record.
So if anyone has a good place to crash -- floor is fine -- I'll bring along my own sleeping bag, etc... I know I could camp or get a hotel, but one of my favorite parts of visiting new tourneys, courses and cities is getting to know some of the disc golfers there, and no better way to do that than a couple of late nights with great hosts.
Thanks in advance for your hospitality. Oh, and for whatever it's worth, I'm turning 30 this month, would be playing Advanced, and work for a non-profit doing work with children's hospitals across the country (yes, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is one of our members -- I may try to drop in there while I'm up that way).

Played Tuesday doubles at Knob Hill last night and I am pleased to report significant progress on improvements to the course. J Gary Dropcho spent Monday working with township employees......clearing rough, cutting wider fairways and backfilling/leveling the blue tees. Marshall Township paid for a set of Fly 18 pads and the word is those items arrived yesterday. All the tees are marked for leveling/grading and we noticed holes 1, 2 and 10 have already been completed. Park employees will continue the prep work this week and the pads will be installed next week.
You don't want to miss this one, folks......it's the 20th Anniversary for the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open.....we've got great player packages for the ams and tons of added cash for the pros.....catered dinner for the players Sunday afternoon.... two world class courses, Knob Hill and Moraine State Park. This has already been so much fun this year and the golf hasn't even started. 15 pro Grandmasters signed up and quite a few great golfers in that division. It's gonna be fun. Schultz and Nikko tied the course record the first round with a pair of 57's from the Gold tees at Moraine. Barry carded a 58 the second round while Nikko scored a 67 I believe. Mela is leading the Pro Masters and Gobrecht is winning the Grandmasters. Johnny Sias aced hole 5 and someone else aced hole 7. Scores shoule be posted tonight. Also Angela is 3 strokes ahead of 10+ time PFDO winner Elaine King going into the round at Knob Hill. Should be interesting as Elaine has played the PFDO at Knob Hill every year since 1994.

The weather worked out quite well for folks that did not play the finals. :D
Day 1, a big storm hit after the golf.
Day 2, early maybe a few drops then just cloudy, after round 1 and just before the finals started some NASTY weather moved in quickly and I don't mind telling you that standing around up on that hill in the pavillion at knob hill everyone was really nervous, the clouds were roiling, folks were saying "I see rotation" , luckily no tornadoes hit us and the area was just hit with a good old rain storm. I drove home at that point and later heard from a buddy that the final round was played in the rain and included one 1/2 hour delay during the round. I did get a few pics of the weather moving in and will post them when I get a chance, probably in a few days as my internet is dead at home. BTW great tournament!!!

It's unusual looking at the Open Women and GMs, where only two of them shot better in the afternoon on the same layout at Moraine which boosted the SSA a full 2 shots. Fatigue factor maybe playing two 60 SSA courses in a day? Open and Masters had almost identical SSAs on the same longer layout there so I'm guessing the wind wasn't much different in the afternoon?

The divisions DID NOT play the same layouts, which was covered in the event flyer and can also be verified in POTSS.
Open and Masters played Gold tees at Moraine both round 1 and 2.
Pro Women and Grandmasters played Blue tees at Moraine both round 1 and 2.
The SSA for the Gold course stayed consistent for the Open & Masters at 65.4 and 65.7 for the two rounds.
The SSA for the Blue course increased for the Open Women & Grandmasters from 60.1 to 61.9 for these competitors likely due to the fatigue factor of playing two 60+ SSA rounds in a day, as you surmised.

The wind was not much different between the morning and afternoon rounds, however, fatigue is often a factor for many players on the par 66 course.

You got that right! I've lived here for almost 8 years and I have never seen Knob Hill that muddy and wet! I must say I was quite impressed with the Fly pads overall. I thought that they might be slippery when wet or muddy, but they had pretty good grip in those conditions. I did hear a couple of negative comments regarding the installation of some of the Fly pads over grass and tree roots. Last week, Marshall Township began building gravel foundations for the Fly pads, but they would have only completed 6-7 pads prior to the event. Those who played probably noticed the nice level pads on holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10. J Gary decided to install the remaining Fly pads directly on top of the grass so we would have pads on all 18 holes during the tournament. Now that the event is over, those pads will be removed and Marshall Township will build the proper foundations for reinstallation.

I think the time has come to examine whether Knob Hill should be used for future Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open tournaments. Rain or no rain, the drainage issues have been ongoing since the beginning and not getting any better - it was just as bad the last time I played Knob as it was the first time I played the course - Sunday October 26th, 1997! With the world class Deer Lakes Park course now coming into its own, I think serious thought should be given into replacing Knob with Deer Lakes for the 2009 PFDO.
