Tournament disc golf returns to the High Country. Registration can be done online at Zonedriven Zone Driven Pro Shop (http://www.zonedriven.com/proshop/ ) A PDF of the tournament flyer is also available there. Please note that we have limited the field to 72 for this inaugural PDGA/Southern Nationals event.

Sponsorship? cost and what do I get?
I hate to see a cash donation turned down, but we don't have anything planned as of right now. I have asked for help on this task, but nothing locally has transpired. This year we are trying to focus on having the best course on Earth to play. If anything changes, I will let you know.
What pads will the pros play? Workdays?
That is up to Harold, but I think "the Pros" on Sat. will be playing the first round from the Pro tees, and the 2nd. round from the AM tees (for the FUN of it). On Sunday, "the Pros" will be playing from the Pro tees! Only one round on Sunday!
"The AM's" might get to taste the Pro tees as well for one round? But, like I said, that is going to be up to Harold.
As far as workday's go, you guessed it! Let me know when you're coming up the mountain and I got all the tools you'll need.

Trail Days is happening this weekend in Damascus, VA.! If all goes well, I will be there and our boats will be left behind. Have at em, but it's still rather cold, so you might want to stay on the course instead. It's beautiful right now! The native azaleas, dogwoods, crested iris, amongst others things are in Full Bloom! The rhodos are getting ready to pop soon.

Is it just advanced and Pro for USDGC spot or Int. too?
Because I;m sure the advanced field will play the same pads as the Pros.
I would hate to see the tournament get compromised by this.
It would suck to have the Pros play two rounds of short and one long. And I'm sure that Ints don't want to play two rounds of long. Especially Masters or Older. This hike can be brutal. I would recommend playing Pro just for the fact of not having to walk up that ridge to start.
haroldduvall
May 15 2008, 05:41 PM
Do we know if this applies to absolutely all divisions? Or does the "Same Tee" rule only apply to those divisions generally associated with USDGC competitors (Pro Open, Pro Master, Pro Grandmaster, Pro Women and Advanced Amateur)? It would be great if Ashe County was including in the North Carolina Series.
We still have some flexibility as we've not made a final decision. Right now, our plan is essentially as Todd described above. We plan to have the 900+ divisions (Open, Master, Grandmaster, Advanced) play two rounds from the longs and one round from the shorts. Sunday's round would be from the longs. The ladies, advanced masters, intermediate, and juniors would likely play either three rounds from the shorts or two rounds from the shorts and one from the longs.
Hopefully we can be part of the series and provide a reasonable test for all divisions. Feedback is encouraged.
Take care,
Harold

The event is on both the NC Series and the NC USDGC series.
Here is a listing of the current standings
http://www.ncdiscgolf.com/results/usdgc08.pdf
When Open, Masters and Advanced play the same tees, it qualifies them to be a USDGC event.
Players scores are then lumped in had they competed against each other and the most points win.

Here's an update. Over the past week, we have prepped 23 tee pads for concrete. The pour is scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We would sure appreciate any help that folks would want to offer.
Next week, we will begin to prep the 15 pads that will be rubber atop level wooden frames. These will primarily be in the wooded, hard to reach areas (9,11,14,15,16.17,18). The likely work days will be Monday June 30 through Wednesday, July 2nd. Again, we sure would appreciate any help that folks would want to offer.

Naw, I don't reckon pads will hurt it that much. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Maybe leaves......, or shine, contribute to focus. :D For the majority of NC golfers who have not been washed in the blood of HCDGC,the pin position on the picture above is barely visible just to the left of the green shrubs in the far distance. And the drive across the road that Brad is talking about is a sure nuf huck. Wish you could make it this evening BS. Just completed a "West Virginia style" walk around the top of the ridge and it's freaking glorious out there. I'll pour an extra Two Hearted in your honor. thank god because that ain't some OE 800 you're pouring out there.
That picture doesn't give the hole it's justice because it makes the short pad look really close to the long. During Ice bowl it took me three shots (disc golf and moonshine) to get to the short pad. I guess that's how to take a seven. However the drive from the short is awesome too because it's reachable to some. I feel the road should be OB (which the don't play it as of now) because it creates the risk/ reward for going for it. But first you have to make out of the woods.

The THROWDOWN is FULL boys and girls. If you didn't get in there's always the ICE BOWL, Feb. 15th., 2009!!!
The course and tee pads are really looking great. This is by far the best time of the year to be playing disc golf in the mountains. A BIG THANKS to INNOVA DISC GOLF for all their help!! They are doing an incredible job, and I can't thank them enough for all their time and hardwork. The Parks and Rec staff is also pitching in and is most deserving of a BIG THANK YOU as well!
Just a few tid bits of information about the Throwdown weekend........
1. Camping at the park will be permitted on Fri and Sat. nights. $5 per head, per night. No showers, but nice bathrooms and a pond. Wal-mart, food, gas, etc. is just around the corner from the park.
2. If you want and/or need a hotel room, you need to make your reservations now!!! The Nations Inn, in West Jefferson, is the host hotel and they are offering discounts for Throwdown participants $67 per night, add $5 per head. (336) 246-2080
3. Tubing with Todd! If you're interested in relaxing on the river a little bit on Friday morning/afternoon, you will need to have your own floatation device or you can rent one nearby. Put in @ 10:45 am sharp!
4. Lunch will be provided on Sat., and maybe Sun.? Burgers and dogs.
5. We are looking for volunteers to help cook and/or be a disc spotter for the rougher holes. Volunteers will get a FREE INNOVA T-SHIRT.
6. Random draw Doubles on Friday night at 5:45 pm sharp!!
That's all I got for now. Please shoot me an email or call if you have any other questions or would like to volunteer or go down the river? Todd Patoprsty (336) 649-0888 cell,

The High Country Throwdown is now full with one on the waiting list. Thanks to all who helped to sell out this inaugural event.
With registration set, we can now specify the set-ups to be played for each division.
Pro Open, Pro Masters, Pro Ladies, Advanced, Advanced Master, and Advanced Grandmaster: Saturday, 1 round from the long tees and 1 round from the short tees. Sunday, 1 round from the long tees.
Advanced Women, Intermediate, and Juniors: Saturday 2 rounds from the short tees. Sunday, 1 round from the long tees except for hole 3 where the new tee pad near the water will be used.
For everyone, all the long rounds will be to the blue (long) pins on holes 8 and 17. All the short rounds will be to the yellow (short) pins on holes 8 and 17.
At this time, we do not plan to use Alternate 8 or Alternate 9.
Thanks again for all those who signed up and those who have worked hard to prepare the course and the tournament. Feel free to write back if you have any questions.

The course continues to get better each day now. Ashe Park should be ready by the bell! For the last couple of weeks now, Harold and Team INNOVA, (Michael, Justin, Andrew, Henry, Robert, Adrian, Daniel, and Joe) have very graciously sacrificed a lot to help make Ashe Park what it is today. They've really giving a lot to this small mountain community, yet most everyone really doesn't understand it quite yet. You all will soon see! Disc golf is growing in the HIGH COUNTRY!!!
For those of you that want to chill out on the lazy New River that Friday, an RSVP (
[email protected]) would make it a whole lot easier to coordinate. At the moment, the plans are to meet up at Sheets bridge (Hwy 221 and Hwy 16 intersection) at 10:45 am!! RIght now there are very few interested, so depending on how many people want to go will depend on how many floatation devices and coolers we will need to try and shuttle back. I have a few boats and tubes, or you can bring your own, or you may have to rent one from Zaloos. It's probably going to be a 1 to 3 hour trip because we have to be back at the park, or at least I want to be back at the park to host the Friday Night Smackdown, Cash Random Draw Doubles! $5 entry, Free ? ace pool entry (if it doesn't get hit this Thursday, or on our Firecracker 4th O glo juebalee round). Tee time 5:45 pm sharp!
We're also planning on burgers and dogs for lunch on both Sat. and Sunday, and we are still looking for volunteers to help cook and be spotters during the rounds? Volunteers will receive lunch and a T-shirt for their time and contribution. *If you don't eat meat or know of someone that will be there that doesn't eat meat, please let me know so we can be prepared?
Unfortunately, I'm going to miss all the Sat. night shenanigans because Wendy and I have been invited to the Mayor of West Jefferson's Luau party. Sorry, but we don't won't to pass up that opportunity and open bar.
That's all I got for now. Let me know if anyone has any other questions?
Looking forward to it!

Sontag disc golf course is south of Rocky Mount, VA and just a short drive from Greensboro, High Point and other NC areas. It is 7000' from the white tees, with elevation and sick par fours. I highly recommend it and welcome y'all to the Sontag Open in thirteen days.
PS--It's common knowledge that VA golfers suck, so come on up and take some easy money!

For those of you that are considering coming up the mountain early this week, I want to fore warn you that Ashe Park will not be allowing campers until Friday and Sat. nights. Maybe on Thursday? I will ask again today.
Here are a few other prime choices for camping not to far from the course;
Twin Rivers Family Campground, 1863 Garvey Bridge Rd., Crumpler, NC (336) 982-3456 *15 mins. to the course
or
The New River State Park (has two different locations, Wagoneer Rd. access and Hwy 221 access). (336) 982-2587
*15-25 mins. from the course
All three of these campgrounds are on the New River. The New River State Park ones make you pack it in a little ways though.
As far as Friday's River Run is going, I haven't heard from to many people, so we're still literally going with the flow. Fortunately, we've been getting some rain of the past few days now. Unfortunately, that caused the river to get muddy. Please call me (336) 649-0888 cell, or email me at
[email protected] if you're interested? Again, we plan to meet at Sheets Bridge (Hwy 88 E and Hwy 16) at 10:45 am! You will also need to provide your own floatation device, unless you've made other arrangements with me.
My wife, Wendy wanted to let all the girls/wives know that there is a Gallery Crawl in Downtown West Jefferson on Friday between 4:30 to 8:30 pm. There are something like 17+ galleries for your viewing and shopping pleasure.
I am hoping to make a simple map of the area so everyone can find their way around easy and safely.
Only 4 more days til we THROWDOWN!!!!

I am beat. As well as the INNOVA gang and Daniel Quin from the Parks and Rec staff.
The course is really looking good though, I can't wait to play it! I am actually icying my shoulder, bicep, and forearm right now because I've been working like a mad man mowing greens, pruning, weed eating, etc, etc.
If you are one of the lucky 72 players, you're going to want to buy a season pass!
I also wanted to remind everyone that we should have enough food there (burgers and dogs) for lunch both days. FREE, unless you can afford a small contribution.
We are still looking for volunteers to assist as spotters, so if you don't want to miss out on all the action, this might be your ticket to a free Innova T-shirt and lunch.
The river run is questionable at this point due to the amount of rain we have received this week. More than likely a few of us will brave the brown waters. Give me another shout if you want to go?

Jul 09 2008, 02:18 PM
There has been, and there continues to be, a waiting list. Right now, there are 72 players registered and Mark Collins is on the waiting list.
Registration is a little trickier than usual due to the diversity of players and the challenge of the Ashe County course. While there are many divisions for High Country, there are two distinct cohorts for course set-up purposes. One includes Intermediate, Juniors, and Advanced Women. The other is comprised of all of the other divisions. The total number of players in each cohort needs to be divisible by 4. Otherwise, we would have a fivesome which would be quite problematic on a long course like Ashe County.
As players withdraw, we are trying to accommodate those on the waiting list while preserving the right balance to maintain a full field without any fivesomes.
Take care,
Harold

And the weather forecast is.......
Thursday, Hi: 77 Lo: 61
Mostly to partly cloudy; Scattered t-showers possible; Light NE wind
Friday, Hi: 79 Lo: 62
Partly cloudy; An isolated afternoon t-shower possible; NW wind 5-10 mph becoming calm at night
Saturday, Hi: 79 Lo: 62
Lots of clouds; Scattered PM t-showers
Sunday, Hi: 80 Lo: 64
Partly to mostly cloudy; You guessed it... Scattered PM t-showers
So, bring your rain gear, tarps and umbrellas! We've had rain just about every day now for at least a week. The rain showers usually don't last long and are kind of hard to predict, but better to be dry than sorry.
This also makes the river look like Willy Wonkas Chocolate Factory, so Fridays river run is looking bleek. Definitely not good for tubing! I'm not giving up yet though, seriously, let me know if you want to go?
Just a few reminders.....
Camping will be permitted at the park on Friday and Sat. nights only! $5 per head per night. No showers, but they do have clean bathrooms and a pond. Should be a lot of FUN! Everything close by.
On Saturday! Player meeting at 9 am! Pros and Adv. divisions will be throwing one round from the Pro tees and one round from the Am. tees. Intermediate and Juniors will be throwing both rounds from the Am tees.
On Sunday! Tee time 10 am! Everyone will be throwing one round from the Pro tees!
After the 3rd. round we will be having some extra curricular activities for the FUN of it! Big Jerm VS. HANK DA BANK!
Also, don't forget we're going to try a feed everyone lunch (burgers and dogs) on Sat and Sun.!! No charge, but we will gladly accept donations. If we have any left over cents we'll make the best of it and try and get some breakfast for Sunday. Wendy and Rita are going shopping on Friday, so we shall see.
The Friday Night Smackdown, CASH random draw DOUBLES deadline in 5:45 pm sharp! Tee time roughly 6 pm! Ace pool over $100! $4 entry, $1 ace pool. From the Am tees!
Volunteers would be appreciated! Ask?
Should be a lot of FUN! Can't wait to see how the course plays! It's looking FANtastic!
THANKS AGAIN to INNOVA and the Ashe Parks and Rec staff for all their time, money, and hard work! You know, I got your backs.
Only 2 days away until we THROWDOWN! I still have some leftover fireworks!

PRE-CURSOR: JOKE ABOUT TO HAPPEN!!!!!!!
After the 3rd. round we will be having some extra curricular activities for the FUN of it! Big Jerm VS. HANK DA BANK!
JOKE STARTING NOW:
What if Hank doesn't finish all three rounds, are they still going to have the dance off? If Hank finishes all three rounds, I would give him the advantage in the "dance off", especially in lieu of some of those new moves busted out at points bonanza-Ho's nest this year. What limits Jerm though, is the fact that several top and respected "dancers" in the pro division took Jerm aside at the Clash and taught him the non-excentric dance philosophy of dancing "positively". Hank got some of this too from our local WISCOnsin transplant khaki seller, but no offense, the intensity of the lesson by "THE PRO DANCER" appears to have held a lot more credence and longevity of Jerm Zenning into a dance philosophy of peace permanently. Rumor also has it that the "biggest of all warriors" from our southern Georgia neighbor has offered to assist Hank in development and implementation of a "monumental destroyer" move, guaranteed to leave long lasting impressions on anyone who see's it, and monuments within a 500' perimiter of any course being used (with no discrimination tactics evident at this time, so hippy and war memorials are just as much in jeopardy) which ultimately led to him earning the 2006 World Championship at the 2006 PDGA Sanctioned World Dance-Off.
I am going to bet on Hank if there is no round completion criteria. Jerm has gotten Ghandi-like soft, with no recent reports of impairments to others.
Todd, you were talking about the dance-off, right?! ;) :D:cool:
Hank - 1 Jerm - 0
It is important to note that both these young competitors have the physical skills and abilities to compete for the overall championship, whether or not done for purposes of peace/enjoyment/selflessness or for channeling the "dark side" of the sport.

Thank you to each and everyone for putting in the labor to get Ashe Cty. park in the ground. Everything was smooth, and it was so nice to finish rounds one and three with food prepared and ready to meet us as we stumbled off the mountain. Thanks volunteers!
Congratulations Todd (and Wendy, Harold, and all the parks and rec guys who obviously have a lot of pride in this place) on accomplishing your dream!

wow... AMAZING course in the west. i really wanted to unload my bag on 9 and 18 after the round but didnt want to walk back up that hill. this course truly incorporates every different type of shot in disc golf. thanks to todd (and all other helpers) for the experience, and to you and wendy for the great hospitality. also, to bergey and volunteers for making it run smoothly.
who knew some missing limbs on hole 3 would make it play 7 strokes easier

Scores are up!
What a weekend. BIG JEREMY KOLING knocked out everyone with a combination of explosive blows, highlighted by a very impressive 43 from the white tees in round 2. His new nickname might oughta be Everlast, yet he almost has enough energy as little Wiggins! Good Shootin and Congratulations to all the winners and survivors!
Thanks again to Harold Duvall, INNOVA DISC GOLF, Paul Bergey, all the players, volunteers, and the Ashe Co. Parks and Rec. dept.!!! It was a tremendous group effort that wouldn't of been possible or as successful without the love, help and support from everyone. We all learned a lot and can now reflect and grow on this experience to make it even better next year!
Wendy and I really appreciate all the nice compliments and throughly enjoyed seeing and sharing the good times with all our old friends and several new ones. Overall I can't thank you all enough. We wish you all the best and hope to see you on top of the mountain for another one for years to come.

Dave, thanks for the reminder! I talked with Steve earlier and promised him that I would post his info so that interested folks could check his pics out. He said that he would have them up soon. Not sure if there will be a special code, but if need be, I will look into it.

How was the USDGC spot awarded? My first pdga round was in a group with Wiggens Jr & Sr. It was one of the only times I beat him in tourney play. I will enjoy keeping up with his rounds @ Winthrop this Fall.

Lead Open card all took 5s but 4 differnet ways. There was alot more work done to the hole even from 2 weeks ago. But they should've left the rope tree. Also 3 was trimmed a little more between Saturday and Sunday so them righties could bail out easier. If only that was the case on 7 however I did throw over the hill on the hole but a little too fast. I really didn't like the new 17 blue especially the tee shot or maybe it was the snowman on it I didn't like

Speaking of # 11

I got to play a practice round on July 4th with Tim Barr. We played shorts first then a round from the longs (except 10 mando because a family set up camp there for the fireworks). Only found one tee on # 7 and it was left of the lake part way up the hill toward the playground, and dirt. Did you guys play a temp over the water and new dock? Did not play the alternates on # 8 or # 9.
Tim shot a 49 from the shorts and 51 from the longs, including a OB 4 on hole 2 long.
I also threw discs. Even got to make lots more throws than he did!!!!
What rope tree?
A guy who played through on # 11 told us they play 2 meters OB there. Is that true of the tournament? On radar it looked like you also got rain. Is that true? Back nine could be very treacherous when wet or snowy.

Hey John. Yup a killer course isn't it. Next time you and Tim are over this way holler and we'll try to get up with you.
The tee for #7 was moved to the walk way going out to the new handicap accessible fishing dock, both blue and white lines on that walkway with large white pine requiring a left side mando putting the small stream behind the basket even more into play.
Played the standard blue on #8 where you tee up through the white pine tunnel as well as the white out in the middle of the uphill slope.
#9 played the long blues farther up the hill from the short whites looking down on the pin across the park road to the left of the hedge.
Not sure what the rope tree was that Brad spoke of, but #11 played very fairly I thought. Then again I think it's a well designed unique hole. Would have to check the cards but I'm pretty sure this old fart threw 5, 4, 5.
2 meter rule was not in effect.
No rain until the round was over on Sunday and we were into awards and distance competition. Watching Jerm and Henry, et al bomb the bath house from up on the hill was amazing.

Thanks for the info.
Did you get my PM about The Volunteer Cup Team Challenge (http://lakefrontdiscgolf.com/Documents/2008%20VOLUNTEER%20CUP%20TEAM%20CHALLENGE.pdf) ?
Three team spots left, maybe only 2 pending another Knoxville team.
I know you like playing here, and this is the first of what may be a long running fall tradition.

Thanks for pulling my cord on that one again John. All the usual suspects will be at Ramcat tomorrow afternoon and I'll feel them out. All the boys that were with me the last time we were up there will be interested, it's just a matter of getting committments from at least four people and the other two will fall into place I'm sure. Hope we can work it out.

Good lord. The pictures they got of me have inspired me to go run 5 miles... IMG_6798 looks like I'm giving a thumbs up with my left hand. Believe I would rather have your pout Peckham then my horrible expression.
Disc is sweet Todd. If I can make it up to the Ice Bowl this year. I will def. bring my camera up. If you are doing anything over Thanksgiving up at the course I will be there as well.
