The 2008 Waco Charity Open is on! Mark your calendars for June 7-8, 2008!
There were some concerns that it would not be able to happen this year because of construction, but Joey Harrell has given the go ahead. This long-running event is one of my personal favorites and I'm more than thrilled to help keep it going. MaceMan Disc Golf will provide pick-your-own plastic and much more :). This will be event #11 of the North Texas Series, helping qualify players for the Z-Boaz skins match at the end of the season. The entire field will be capped at 180 players, with a minimum of 10 spots held for Open Pro. Once we get close to filling, two flights of 90 will be established with preference given to the Pro and Advanced divisions. Waco has seen as many as 236 players in one event during Mr. Himings stay in the states, so a 180 cap is likely to fill very quickly. Get signed up today at http://www.titleDISC.com/ !
All divisions will play two rounds at each course. Advanced and Open divisions will play the longs. Intermediate and Rec will play the shorts. Come out and test your game against this mix of courses that definitely has something for everyone :).
Prices:
All Pro: $60
All Advanced: $50
All Intermediate: $40
All Recreational: $30
I strongly encourage everyone to pre-register for this one via titleDISC.com, or in person at either of the next two upcoming North Texas Series events. Click Here (http://www.titledisc.com/eventDisplay.php?eventid=338) for a direct link to the online pre-registration page. Snail-mail registration isn't quite as reliable but can be sent to:
Joshua Dann
titleDISC
3000 Blake St.
Corinth, TX 76210
Include the following information (a form will be available soon):
Name (First and Last)
PDGA Number
Division
Telephone number
and of course, the entry fee in the form of a check or money order.
All snail-mail entries *must* be postmarked by Monday, June 2nd or they will be refused. In the event that a snail-mail entry arrives after the flight for that division is full, I will contact the player and offer a refund or a spot in a higher division, if one is available. If (in that situation) no spots are available or the player does not qualify for any of those spots, the entry will be refunded.
See you all in Waco!

FYI - The sanctioning for this event has been approved and paid for. It should be up on the Tour schedule by early next week.

So who is running it? Is it Mace or is he just doing the payout?
baldguy
May 09 2008, 03:59 PM
I am the TD on record, but this will be a team effort. Mace obviously has the years of experience and know-how that it takes to run a great tournament. Joey Harrell (who ran this event for *years*) has been in contact with the City of Waco to be sure that everything will run smoothly. I have the technology and willingness to promote the event and make sure that all scores and PDGA fees are turned in on time. Everybody contributes, everybody wins :)

So Mace will give the Speech and handle the payout? :D
baldguy
May 10 2008, 12:09 AM
pretty much :)
don't forget about Mace's NTS rolling acepot. If it doesn't get hit @ Rockwall the week before, it should be pretty sizeable by the time Waco comes around

No aces at A-Z, so the acepot rolls to Rockwall. There are definitely some ace-able holes out there, but if it survives to Waco it should make Cameron West interesting :).

May 12 2008, 12:11 PM
It was hit in Athens by the legendary Jerry Power so it started fresh at A-Z. I believe about $150 was added at A-Z and there's already another $105 added from Rockwall pre-registration. Add in the rest of the field who has yet to register and it should get up close to $500 total before counting any of the Waco players. A good turnout at Waco could add another $500 easily
baldguy
May 15 2008, 09:36 AM
5 pre-registered already with over three weeks to go. Let's get this thing ramped up!
baldguy
May 20 2008, 12:44 AM
Rockwall is full, but Waco still has plenty of room! This long-running event *will* continue this year.
Set right in between North and South Texas, players from both regions can meet up and compete on a couple of great, challenging courses! Again, I'll reiterate: I personally guarantee that the tournament data will be submitted on time with payment to the PDGA, so everyone will get their ratings when they're supposed to :)
baldguy
May 21 2008, 02:42 PM
If anyone is interested in sponsoring the Waco event, please contact me or Brian Mace for more info. Cash sponsorships are currently the only offered option, but Brian may decide to change that.
$100 per sponsored hole or $150 for one hole per course.
also, I just found out that I will be able to play this year! With Brian handling all the TD duties, I don't need to "mind the store" and since it's a B-tier I can officiate while playing as long as there is another official in another division, on the other course :). I think we'll have that covered so hopefully I'll be adding my name to the pre-reg list soon!

Waco is gonna be awesome... and maybe the last chance for tournament play on the current layouts, depending on what happens w/ the construction. It would be great to have more FPOs turnout! Anyone wanting to help promote the event can download a flyer here:

I'm workin' it, but with trips to Massachusetts, Michigan, Arkansas & Alabama in a 9 week period, some of the tried & true Texas events will have to be a no go. Waco has been a long time family favorite, & I highly reccomend it, I just don't think I can pull it off this year. Will promote with all the Double R peeps & see about pumping it up!!

I'm glad to see the support coming from the local crowd. Waco has always had a strong DG community and it really shows! If there's anything you guys need from me before next weekend, please don't hesitate to ask. I'll try to respond more quickly than I have been :(

They won't be pulled, but they will be redesigned post-construction.
During the construction, the idea is to have 9 holes on each side of the river available for casual play.
A branch of Kat's company is handling some of the design work. The city is planning on keeping the full courses, but in new configurations to accomodate some of the changes. She only knows that the Redwood Shelter area is getting a big redesign, but no specifics.
baldguy
Jun 02 2008, 02:51 PM
so what you're saying is that this weekend's tournament is likely our last chance for tournament play on the current course configurations? I guess that makes it even bigger than normal :D
get signed up today! I seriously doubt that there will be enough spots for everyone who plans on waiting until the last minute. If you want to guarantee your spot, get it very soon. The tournament we just got done with this weekend only had room for 100 people but I think there were over 200 interested in playing. The ones that waited too long missed out on all the fun...
5 days left! :)

Mace has ordered a ton of fresh merch for this event! It's looking like a great turnout in all divisions!
51 players signed up so far, with 4 days left.
Advanced, Intermediate and Rec will be limited to 40 players each. That means 27 spots left in Advanced, 26 in Intermediate, and 35 in Rec. Those numbers could get much smaller very quickly.
Don't put it off, you may be sorely disappointed.

Don't think I am getting anymore of those but I may have one in my 1st stack I got from them.
Anyone know how the courses are looking? Also is this 3 or 4 rounds? If 4 I assume Pro/ADV will play the east twice.
baldguy
Jun 03 2008, 03:58 PM
all divisions will be playing each course twice - one round per course, per day. Adv. and Pro Men divisions will play the longs on the old course at least one round. Intermediate and Rec will play the shorts. Everyone plays from the same tees on the East course.
If we get over 50 in the Adv/Pro pool, Sunday's round on the old course will play from the shorts to get people on the road a bit quicker. If we don't fill, pools will be balanced by shifting the smaller divisions around.

There are short tees?
baldguy
Jun 03 2008, 04:07 PM
on the old (west) course, yes. Holes 10, 11, 15, and 16 (am I forgetting one or two?) have long tees and almost every hole on the back 9 has a long pin placement. How far we stretch it out has a lot to do with how big the adv/pro pool is.
edit: I'm also thinking about a temp. long box on a couple of the easier holes like #6 and #7.

Ok that makes sense because I can only remember a few holes that had two sets. Because it is only 4 holes I doubt playing the shorts would cut the round by more than 15 min. You should also remember that the Pros will probably play the West an hour fater than the Ams will play the east.
baldguy
Jun 03 2008, 04:12 PM
add in the longer pin placements and a couple of temp long teeboxes... I might be able to make the pro round last as long as the am one ;). We'll see, I guess. Most holes are going to be what you remember, I just don't want it to be toooo easy :D

By the way, there were no aces at A-Z or this past weekend at Rockwall, so the ace pot *starts* at $510, before counting up all the players who have preregistered and entered the acepot.

My opinion is since the course will change soon, it would be nice to play the tournament in original tee positions (6-7) while we can. There are longer positions for baskets like 17 and 18.
baldguy
Jun 03 2008, 04:43 PM
that's a good point. It may be best to leave 6-7 as they are, I was just trying to come up with a way to challenge the pros a little more :)

Jun 03 2008, 05:24 PM
you just got done telling me to remember how much faster the open pool will play in Waco :D
They will play the West faster than the Ams will play the east.
moving this over to the Waco thread to let Brice have his thread back :).
Matt, get signed up dude! JD just called and said he is having a hard time justifying the second weekend in a row to his wife... but if a few more Open-types sign up it will be easier to convince her that it's worth the trip :). I know you pros are kinda slow when it comes to playing and signing up for tournaments, but the more people we get on that pre-reg list, the more will decide to make it to the tournament. Let's make it happen!
Also, if anyone can raise help raise some cash sponsorship, please feel free. I'm not in Waco to hit up the local businesses but the DG scene down there is a good one and I know we all want to see this remain a successful event. Every bit helps!
There is already a guaranteed $250 added to the pro purse. CFR sales and cash sponsorships will make this number go up!
BTW - I just found out that we will have 50 CFR Destryers with this year's Waco Charity Open stamp. Anyone who wants one can send $25 to
[email protected] along with a requested weight range and I will set one aside. I will also be adding this as an option for titleDISC registrations.

To be fair, I warmed it up for him by hitting chains on that hole about 30 minutes prior :D.
Alan was very generous with his windfall. He bought $100 worth of discs and put $50 back into the acepot for the final! What a guy :). Grats again, Alan.

WOW! Thats great to know! Alan and Francis both have done a lot to help out Abilene disc golf. Alan specifically kept things going in the lean years. I played one round this weekend with Alan. I can honestly say that the ace money went to one of the nicest guys on the course and I was happy to write him that fat check!

Just curious: what was the best score shot on The Beast? It's one of my favorite courses and I try to play it every time I'm back in TX -- always curious how bad it eats folks up.
My best so far has been a 52 in casual play, and that was in the wind with a roll-away circle four on the first short pond hole (usually a pretty easy deuce). Of course, that was probably the best round of my life (on any course). I think my second-best score there was a 57, so there is a long way between good and best out there. I'm usually thrilled with anything in the 50s, and anything single-digits over par still feels pretty good.
Congrats to the winners -- I know Waco gets hot and humid this time of year and two days out there is a long weekend.

Pro / Adv played the Beast rounds 1 and 4. a quick (and possibly inaccurate) scan tells me that the best round this year was a 53 by Rob Lowrie. Mike Olse, Nick Rowton and Chris Farnham also shot 55 to tie for the second-best round at the Beast in this year's tournament. Last year, JD shot 50 and 51 for the historically most consistently great rounds on the beast, and Nolan Grider currently holds the course record at 49. That course certainly earns its name :)

Are the posted payout amounts correct ? MA2 had 26 player's, 1st place payin 45 dollars, MA3 had 13 player's 1st place payin 55 dollars, 2nd place payin 48 dollars.

yes, they are correct. There was a mistake in the original payout posting for MA3 and rather than disappoint all of the people who already had discs picked out, MaceMan simply allowed the mistake to ride. He ended up losing over $200 on the deal, but you have to hand it to a man who is willing to give out of his pocket to keep the players happy. Hopefully the Rec players who received the extra payout will put the discs to good use, moving up to Intermediate for next year's Waco Charity Open :)

I bet he didn't come out with a net loss though. :D

Matt,
You need to start running tournies. Maybe then you can understand that a very small net profit is equivalent to a loss if you could have made more somewhere else :D

When you insult and abuse your customers than a small profit is all you are going to get. Rusco from DD though knows how to make tournaments work for both sides, and I think that he is the future of disc golf in Texas. He is a PDGA member, he turns his info in on time, and he enjoys doing what he is doing.

hey flesner what was the last tourney YOU RAN??? ah thought so. now shut-it. dont throw stones unless you have been where mace stands. which I doubt. I dont disagree that mace needs to get sanctioning stuff turned in on time but having to listen to all the crying allot of YOU guys do gets old and would make everyone who runs event want to quit..

Second this.
Running an event is working for free (or at a loss). Imagine the crying if TD's took out staff wages.

I'm a PDGA member, I turn my stuff in on time, and I actually *live* in Texas. There are lots of other TDs in Texas who do the same. Rusco definitely puts on a good show but why would we want to rely on someone to drive down from Kansas to run our tournaments?

Josh, Thank you for providing the service that we, the players, pay for....and by pay for i mean, part of my entry fee was for the PDGA, ie players fees.

FYI - results for The Waco Charity Open and the titleDISC Open have both been turned in and accepted by the PDGA. Both events should be on the next ratings update!
How's that for "on time"? :D:cool:/msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
