I've been playing for a while now, but I still have a lot of trouble putting in the wind. I've used (and still carry in my bag) a Bulldog, Hydra, E-series Wizard, and countless other overstable putters trying to keep a disc from getting caught up and blowing over the basket or being pushed underneath it. Does anyone have any suggestions of a really good windy putter I could try? Thanks!

I have always heard the Rhyno is a great wind putter...
Never used it myself.
I personally think that wind management can be done successfully with practically any putter though.
More about technique than disc selection....to a point.

You already tried it. Anyway if you are having problems going high or low it isn't the disc. If it us flipping in the wind then it is the disc but in this case I would say work on your putting.

I use a Champion Gator when it's REALLY blowing. Best bet is to practice more in the wind. I don't think anything works better than practicing in the wind and really paying attention to what the wind is doing while you're practicing to make you a better wind putter.
Try tying a flag/streamer to your practice basket so you are always aware of wind direction. Pay attention to what works best.
Use the wind ... don't let it use you.
Easy to say ... I know! Good luck.

For average windy conditions I use a KC Pro Aviar.
And for very windy conditions I use a midrange disc like a Roc or Buzzz.
Mainly its technique that gets you in the basket in windy conditions. Don't let the wind get a chance to get under an edge and flip it one way or another.
Practice in the wind, when you get a very windy day go to your course and practice putting. Practice putting, not play a round, but practice. Practice putting in a headwind, tailwind, right to left, left to right. Practice it all, that's the only true advice there is......

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help. So people would really advocate clubbing up and putting with a midrange in the wind? I was trying to avoid that if possible, but if it works, I'll give it a shot.

I wouldn't recommend that! Mids are more nose angle sensitive than putters and I'm sure even more so in the wind on putts.

That's what I figured. If anything, I'd say I'd putt with a firebird because it's predictable, but not a mid.

Most Midrange discs have a bigger diameter than a putter. That is what makes them more nose angle sensitive in the wind. I use a Champ Gator when it is blowing hard. It has the same diameter as my BB Aviars, but is way less touchy. The Gator holds its height and angle no matter what the conditions. The lack of glide and its very over-stable flight path make it my go-to when winds are brutal!

I love the (ESP)Banger GT. That being said, I must reiterate that it is the person and not the disc that plays the wind correctly. I guess what we're really talking about are putters that do not glide...usually a bad thing, but good when its windy.

Rhyno or Challenger...or a Wasp if its a nasty head wind. But I wouldn't recommend a mid-rang as some others said unless you are VERY familiar with how it will react in certain winds and at different angles.

Best windy putter on the market... is the one you putt with every day. I use a beat to hell Aviar Putt & Approach. It works just fine. The key is high wrist snap and low arm speed on a level line to the basket, keep the edge of the disc moving into the wind and don't show it the top or bottom, the wind will be enough to keep it moving and the snap will keep it on line.
It is basically the same principle as handling an UltraStar on a windy day. High snap, low arm speed, be firm.

not just me... quite a few employing this tactic... and just so the visual is there... think shuffleboard style... literally throwing/sliding it upside down the whole way. This was crazy wind though... wind that would blow a disc out of the basket... blow a disc out of someones hands when they prepare to putt... wind that blew a putt into the front side of the basket (hit it flat) and rolled/blew up the chains and over the chastity belt over the basket and away from the basket.
i agree with a lot of other comments... best thing seems to be practice putting in the wind (something I still need to work on)... and one thing to think about that i dont think anybody has mentioned is to place your drive/upshot based on what type of wind you feel comfortable putting in. (read about this tactic on climo's website)

I have used (and still use right now) the Sinus AP and the Piranha. I think that the Sinus is better in the wind, only because It has less glide then the Piranha and more of a Midrange like rim. I think both are great, but in a headwind would go with the Sinus.

Agree with those suggesting putting upside down with the same putter you normally use. It's good to practice this throw anyway since it also is a good shot to get out from under low branches. Just used both of those shots earlier today.

Disagree. As a loft putter, I would rather miss low in the wind or any time for that matter. By loft putting upside down, although I shift to a little more of a line drive, I can go for it in the wind and will likely miss low and closer to the pin than trying to control the loft with the disc right side up.
michaeljo

yea but i dont condone being a loft putter in the wind!!!
cgkdisc
Apr 16 2008, 06:31 PM
As a straddle putter, I can be more accurate continuing my more familiar loft motion but with more line drive trajectory upside down than shifting to another style. Putting right side up with a deep straddle stance makes it harder to keep the nose down so you don't fly away on a miss.

Fortunately, I don't play in high enough winds most of the time to need that shot very often. I agree that those who regularly play in high winds need to learn how to angle their putts and putt right side up. At Mike's level, he has more pressure to practice and be as skilled as possible for those conditions. The upside down putt is still a less riskier way to "go for it" when the situation arises only occasionally and you haven't grooved your wind putting either due to playing less often or not playing where wind is much of a factor.

I've got a Wizard and it's a great disc, but it doesn't really do the job for me. It's great as a driver in the wind for that 200 - 250 foot upshot, however, so I keep it in my bag. The thing is, it's not a once in a while thing that I see this happen. I live in Rock Hill and spend most of my time playing out at the Winthrop lake where there are constant 20 mph headwinds. That's why I was asking in the first place. Any more suggestions are much appreciated.

I'm going to echo those saying the Rhyno. I played for several years in Texas, and had lots of wind most of the time. I played in the sick-windy (60+ mph the whole round) Crosstown earlier this year with Stack and others, and the wind-experience helped a lot. As sad as it is, I shot the same score in the crazy wind as I did the next day when it almost calm (probably less than 10mph).
I usually putt with a Wizard, but when it is windy (anything over 20mph) I put an old CE Fundraiser Rhyno in my bag for upwind/crosswind shots -- not just because it is more consistent as a putter, but because it is more consistent as an upshot disc.
As someone who still uses Piranhas, too, I agree that they work great in the wind, but for most people (myself included) they are too different from a regular putter to really be a comfortable substitute. A Rhyno is the closest thing I know of to the feel of what people are already used to that still works dramatically better in the wind. That said, a Piranha is a sick disc for flick-upshots in the wind if you can get your hands on one.
Ray -- I saw that you said you still had some old soft Piranha's in the basement. I only have one true softy -- my first disc ever -- and I've been searching for years for another in the same plastic. If any of yours are that soft, almost gummy plastic, I'd love to get one from you. I'm not sure what I have that you'd want, but there are enough discs that have piled up over the last 10 years that I'm sure something would strike your fancy.
Oh, and for those days when the wind is obscene -- like Crosstown was -- never feel bad about throwing upside-down shots as upshots. At Crosstown, 30-feet out was an upshot, and all you wanted to do was take a driver, turn it upside down, and try to park it by the basket.

I echo that it's the Indian, not the Arrow. When it's windy, I work on being smooth, flat and imparting a little more spin on the disc. That way it holds it's line better. Outside 10m I aim for the base of the pole unless it's downwind or I'm feeling confident. Inside 25' I go for it but really work on a little extra spin and throwing it light and smooth into the wind. I will on occasion putt upside down or with an overstable disc. Biggest thing is practice upshots from 40-120 feet in high winds so the putts are as short as possible. A good stable putter like a Wizard, BB Aviar, GT Banger or Challenger is good for that range. Find some wind and practice in it...that's how you really get better.

I'm taking Madmax's suggestion ... Now I just throw Indians. They are not very hard to catch when drunk or stoned, and they fly really well in this condition. Not really good for practice though, because I can usually only get one in the basket at a time ... unless they are small.
I've found the "push" putt is the best method of getting an Indian in the basket. ;)
