The 803-309-8508 # is incorrect. The lady that answered said she had received numerous calls for Joey but didn't know him and apparantly never heard of disc golf. I tried 803-268-0298, got a machine but it's that computer voice so maybe that's it! Is Joey a disc golf robot?

It should be good, but it will be a game time decision. I will defenitly be there to help out. Sorry about the wrong number, the other number is good in the evening.

I hope the rounds don't take too long. I have formal that weekend and if I can get out by 5 or 5:30 then I should be fine to play. I reall hope we get started at 10 and have like an hour lunch and then I think I can play the tourney

I'll be there.
Chris, you won't know until that day if we'll be done in time. Will you be playing open!? hope so. I'd like to see a decent showing of Pros. (And I'd love a rematch ;) )

Yeah I should be there, I will talk to Joey about keeping lunch at 1 hour so to make sure we get done in time. And im up for the rematch, but just remember Orangeburg is my home course where I learned the skillzzz lol

I sent a message to the tour director for clarification on the listing. I will take care of it.
I think there is more going up there. Maybe a club announcement today or tomorrow.
See you at singles at West Ashley today.

I still don't understand why we have 2 Disc Golf tournaments going on in the same state 2 1/2 hrs from each other! Sorry but already made plans to go to Seneca before this event was ever listed on SCDGO or Message board

It's unfortunate, but sometimes there are considerations that dictate when events must be held. For example, I believe Orangeburg's date is tied in with the town festival, while Seneca & Toccoa are tied in with each other.
Look at it on the good side....for those of us living between the two, it gives us choice. For those the lower state or Savannah, Seneca is 4 or 5 hours away. For those in the SCDGO point series, it's a double-points weekend since the field will be split and there'll be two firsts, two seconds, etc.

For anyone who hasn't been to Orangeburg and seen the course, it is one of the most manicured and greenest courses out there. The tee signs are great, the sign for the course was voted best disc golf course sign a few years back in the Disc Golf World News and greens are usually fast. A good mix of woods and open holes. This weekend should be a great time for everyone.

Hey Chris -
What do you think the SSA is out there (on a typical sunny/avg wind day)?
Typical day SSA would be 47 (ish)...pull up tournaments in past around 2002-2003 and have good estimate but anything in the 40's is good because the holes are easy but can become very hard VERY EASILY!

Also would like to note that this is on my TOP 5 of most enjoyable courses to play! You always walk off (as many do at Earlewood) saying, I should be 5 or more strokes better than what I shot. You come back thinking about all the opportunities you missed!

Apr 24 2008, 10:49 PM
Yea, this course will test your ability to play in tight woods and wide open windy conditions. Just be ready for some tough putting when you hit the back 9!! Definitely looking forward to playing this tournament though

Apr 24 2008, 11:38 PM
Tradd, depending on the tee pads we play which are usually white and maybe a blue teepad on 8 and 17 the SSA is usually around 47 but if we play the blues on the longer holes it could be closer to 50. An average round out there always has some wind especially on the back nine.
FYI: After Stoney Hill and Saydes I could definitely see Ive had my game be affected because of my knee but this week it has been feeling way better.
Mike you need to come back out to Owens, I haven't finished less than 2nd this entire doubles season out there. 3 wins one 2nd place finish.
Looking for that first Open win this season. Go big or Go home

I don't play owens anymore b/c the wifey was saying I was playing too much DG...playing every weekend plus 2 days a week. So cut out thursday.
Yeah Chris I've been smoking at Earlewood as well. Finished 4th the 1st week and haven't been worse then 2nd from there on out! I just can't seem to put my game together come tournament time. I think it's that mental game where you got 1 shot and that's it. Nobody else to score well if you don't to benefit you!

Unfortunately, delete Coleman ... but Connor and I will still be there.
Course is looking terrific! We (8 from Chucktown) played a tag round out there last Saturday on the way home from Sayde's in Chapin and had a great time. Well, most of us did ... except for Connor, who received birthday abuse from Blaine and Trevor ... but you can't blame that on the course!

Very small turn out for a beautiful day in the South. Alot of people who commited didn't show up and no Mel Shuman at the Festival of Roses Tourney is a rarity.
The first round was played from the short tees and the hot score was 44 by Connor Thompson.
The rest of the rounds are going to be played from the long tee pads.
After Day 1 the leaders are:
Pro:Chris DNA Kilgus
Advanced: Blaine Kinkel
Adv. Master: David Heywood

Only 3 pro's, but thats only two less than last year. We couldn't get any of the am guys to move up but score wise, I shot 47 and 51 which looking at the scores from last year from the long tees 51 should be almost 1000 rated and 47 from the short tees should be pretty decent too. Darrell and Joey are playing pro. Not a good turn out at all but its the course that you play and not the competitors. More to come tomorrow

Scores:
Pro: Darell Lambrecht 47, 54, 52, 52 =205
Chris Kilgus: 47, 51, 59, 53=210
Joey Johnson: 50, 58, 60, 64=232

Don't feel bad Chris. My brother Paul was in 2nd place tied with Mike Farnham today going into second round down by 2 to the 1st place guy. Guy in first was 2 holes late getting back so started round off by losing average of 9 strokes per the holes he missed. Paul shot a 69 to finish the day. 17 STROKES worse than the 1st rnd. He never-the-less got dead last! So....We've all seen the days!

Yeah I know what you mean, Paul has had a rough go of it lately in the last couple of tourney's. I always seem to have that one bad round that kills me in a tourney and its always the difference in finishing well and not cashing. I guess I will only learn and get better.

Any aces out there (I know Connor had 1)? Which holes?

Apr 28 2008, 10:39 AM
Chris - it stinks you only had 14 players. Maybe ya'll should advertise the event more or at least get it posted on the PDGA 2 months in advance. Is there anyway you could move the event to a different date or change it to Sat. only? I know you try to tie it in with the Rose festival but it doesn't really seem to be connected to it other than by name.

Apr 28 2008, 11:10 AM
I started assisting Joey when he asked me to. We will do better next year about the advertising and date for the event. We even talked about having another event this year sometime late this fall. We will see and advertise ASAP.
Thanks to everyone who came out. There was no shortage of golf being played. We were working on round 6 when the storm chased us away. I say we but it was my first round.
Great course and event missed by most but we will do better next time to support our fellow golfers.

The shorts are pretty short.
One ace - Joey, on the first shot of the tournament. (Darrell and Chris started with him on hole 1, and Darrell remarked later that after the first hole, he was already 1 down to Chris and 2 down to Joey!)
Connor, surprisingly, had no aces. His 44 included 1 bogey -- and he didn't even birdie #1 !

Actually I didn't even know that we were going to have it until 2 weeks before. As I don't actually live in Orangeburg anymore I don't really know what goes on and also Mike F. doesn't live in Orangeburg anymore and other than myself, Mike F, and Joey are the only ones really involved in disc golf anymore. Those suggestions need to be directed toward someone else and not me but I can say that the date we have is set by the Parks Department and we have no control over that however, we have started talking about getting them to move the date the weekend before so that we are not in interference with Seneca and that might mean calling the tournament a different name if need be.
And FYI the round ratings sucked. Looking at the first couple years of the tournaments the round ratings were much better and we even played the same holes except for modified 16. I guess its because we had no high rated players which really sucks for everyone who had some good rounds. And the short tees are short and are all under 300 feet but for a 44 to not be atleast 1000 rated is proposterous because in past years a 44 was a thousand rated from the shorts but we had Alan Beaver, Mel, etc. in the field then.

Chris- Is the Rose Festival the same weekend or the weekend after? It seems like in the past the tournament was held 1 week before the festival. It is a great name for a tournament so moving it back 1 week would still work.
Vanessa
Apr 29 2008, 11:04 AM
The ratings were kind of odd. Naturally, we've told Connor that he's just going to have to man up and get his 1000-rated round next time he plays! For myself, in the rounds from the whites, I shot several strokes better than last year and ended up with ratings comparatively 30-50 points worse ... 60 got me a 919 last year, and 57 got me a 891 this year. Guess I need to man up too!!
mynameisJonas
Apr 29 2008, 11:16 AM
With only 12 players and a couple with no ratings and a couple more rated in the 700's that is what you get. Highest rated player was D-rail at 950ish. When a 784 shoots 58 it takes the ratings down.
We all look at the ratings but they are much more accurate when you have 700 rated players up to 1000+ rated in a balence. I think that is why ratings are inflated at big events with all high rated players. The rich get richer.

My understanding---and this is secondhand, but I don't think any of the current Orangburgers are on this discussion board, so it's all likely to be secondhand---is that the tournament is held the week before the Festival of Roses. It couldn't be held during the Festival, due to the crowds. (I assume the Festival is at least held in Edisto Gardens, across the street, where the rose gardens are).
Looks like Toccoa/Seneca are settled in on the same weekend, so there's a conflict for everyone except those in the lowcountry.
It's none of my business, of course, but some free ideas that are certainly worth their price:
If Orangeburg went to 1-day, Saturday-only, South Carolinians in the SCDGO series could play Orangeburg Saturday, Seneca on Sunday.
Or Orangeburg could separate from the Festival of Roses, and look for a spot in an entirely different time of year. Though it is harder to find an open weekend nowadays. And summer, in that shadeless back-nine, might be a bit much.
It's a fine course and whichever way the TDs decide to go---even if the same format as this year---it deserves greater attendance.
DNA_2
Apr 29 2008, 02:03 PM
The tournament is usually held the week before to stay away from the big crowds and because alot of maintenance in the entire Edisto Area (the disc golf course and the gardens) are done the week before to keep everything looking as good as possible. Also the Parks Department controls the blooming of the roses and the head of parks wants the tourney to be held when the roses bloom so the out of towners can see the gardens at its most beautiful. However, I will talk to Joey and see what we can do so that we can get more attendence. A one day is probably out of the question because Buster wants people to stay in town and eat, drink, etc. However we will probably try to move the date one more week earlier and maybe even do an event in the fall.
Or if that doesn't work, Mike and I might do another orangeburg outrageous which has always been held in late May but we may do it later than that and have the tourney sanctioned. Just a thought though. Anyone think that is a good idea?
Stoney Hill DGC
Apr 29 2008, 03:23 PM
non-sanctioned events = more payout. I play tournaments b/c of the course, not the payout. I guess If I was a better player I would think otherwise. I wonder how many golfers actually go to the Rose gardens??? I wouldn't think many. Still a good name for an event and a good course.
davidsauls
Apr 29 2008, 04:30 PM
The Parks Department goals are admirable, but perhaps not practical. I'm the most likely disc golfer I know to visit gardens---I've visited dozens over the years, including Edisto before there was a disc golf course---but at a tournament I'm thinking disc golf. It's not like you can see the rose gardens from the course.
The tourism angle is also valid but, if it's scheduled against other tournaments where only people within 100 miles play, few are likely to stay overnight even for a 2-day.
Then again, perhaps getting it sanctioned in January so it's on the PDGA & SCDGO calendars, and getting some flyers up around the state, might be enough to boost attendance in the current date and format.

Nothing BIG that I can think of goes on the 2nd weekend of May each year (which is the weekend after the festival)...I wouldn't want to play a 1 day"er" here! This course is AWESOME and is definitely a 2 day tournament!!! Anyone willing to play O'burg Sat and Seneca sunday is going to either play 2 days at O'burg since their weekend would be booked anyways or are going to play Toccoa and Seneca. Basically the only players you're going to get at O'burg playing the time it does is Low Country people. Anyone from Augusta or Rock Hill area are going to go to Seneca. Just the way it is!

A-tier in Charlotte 2nd weekend in May. Orangeburg may be in their exclusion zone (I'm too lazy to look it up).
The people who might play Orangeburg/Seneca on a Saturday/Sunday are those trying to win SCDGO points. Toccoa doesn't count.
Just an option thrown in for consideration. Perhaps not the best option. That's a decision for the hardworking TDs, not me.
