Who's coming this year and just hasn't signed up for this OH SO CHEAP tournament. It's a great time and a great chance to take home some awesome MERCH including a BASKET. Last yr or yr before there were 6 baskets given away I believe! It's a $20 entry fee going to a GREAT cause not a local club (not saying that's not a good cause). What's your excuse if you haven't yet entered?

Make it easier and the TD and staff and register EARLY not day of!

That also goes for Stoney Hill Challenge! PRE REGISTER!!!!!!!!

Anybody know that they're coming and have not pre-registered so we can let John and Christine know? It would be nice for them to know how many people to prepare food for. (which is also included in your $20 entry fee) If you've never play this tournament b4, this is no turkey sandwich, chips and drink. This is chili, rolls, vegetables, etc...they do the full monty and go all out! You won't find a better tournament for your buck. You get all of your $20 out of this tournament

It's a sanctioned tournament this year, so some details may have changed. I suggest confirming with John & Christine.

In the past they've raised a ton of money for a good cause, and I'm sure that's still the case. I'm pretty sure they're playing the "original 18", meaning none of the extra holes and perhaps short pin placements.

Seems last year had a big turnout, 70+, on a brutal weather day. The weather will almost certainly be better, so expect a big crowd.

I'm gonna be coming down from Rock Hill, so you can put me on the list. I'm not sure how many are coming with me though. I'll get my registration in the mail either today or tomorrow.

awesome, see you there. You can always call John or Christine and let them know you're coming or post here and how many are coming with you.

We had a HUGE turnout last yr, when it was not sanctioned and I think it was cold and rainy! Gotta love chapin and after all, IT'S A GREAT CAUSE!

From what I've heard, at least 36 CTP's and a few baskets being given out? GREAT tournament, and I expect to see A LOT of people out there! Thanks again to John and Christene for putting this tournament together!!!

Any others planning on attending but not planning to pre-register? I know Paul Martinez will be there but not planning to Pre-Reg. If you're not going to Pre-Reg. then I suggest you get their early due to one of these yrs this tournament is going to fill up due to the high volume of players we had last yr when it wasn't sanctioned!

John and Christine did a WONDERFUL job at Stoney Hill today with the lunches. Food was GREAT! Thanks you two! Now we're only 6 days away from the Memorial! Can't wait. Need to redeem myself from this weekend!

How about some chit chat here? Who's coming, who's not? We'll probably be missing our Charlotte boys this weekend due to the azalea tourney!!! PRE REGISTER! We're already over 30...lets put a good showing for a good cause and a GREAT chance to take home a basket even though some of you may not need ANOTHER one like Coral Sauls. I have 2 myself and only a 15th of an Acre to putt on but I could use a 3rd. Different angles, I have a large hill in back yard with 2 flat levels on it!

Tried calling John but all I got was an answering machine. I sent in my reg. last Friday and haven't seen my name show up on the pre-reg list yet. Who should I go to to make sure I got in?

MICHAELMART
Apr 16 2008, 07:00 PM
leave messages, they'll call back sooner or later. This tourney almost filled with HORRIBLE weather last yr. Not that bad but not pleasant! This weekend, well I know atleast that Friday is going to be 82 degrees!!!!...

Anyone up for a practice round tomorrow I'll be at the course on my lunch break. If you'd like to join me sometime between 10 a.m. and 12:00, let me know. Cell: 803-917-3726. Some others may be joining already. I know of 1 that is about 95% sure.

I played the course today at lunch and it is looking SWEET! No brush to avoid, everything is cleared out and open. Course looks like it has been sweeped with a broom and is very GREEN! I could only pull off a measley 50 today! I feel horrible b/c 16 out of 18 holes are very easily reachable...most of them with a Roc or less. But very few in tournaments break 50~!

Hope I see a BUNCH of you there this weekend!

This thing had filled before registration opened. Registration opened at 9 a.m. and there had been enough early arrivals that it was filled as soon as it opened. We had roughly a 5 person waitlist with many others who showed up just to be disappointed and sent home.

We had GREAT weather! We had a drizzle or 2 here or there but not even enought to pull out umbrella! Brian Jones won Pro division. Not sure about others. Didn't stay around long enough to find out not to mention I was at bottom of list again!

Paul Martinez (my brother) I believe took 2nd losing by 1 stroke. That 1 stroke came from him getting his disc from under basket, hitting his hand on basket on way up, and rolled 15 ft away! BUMMER! I know what most of you are thinking, "why in the HELL didn't he just putt with another disc to hole out?" ... I sd the same thing to him but he just sd thanks for rubbing it in and that if he would have thought of that then he wouldn't be in this situation!...

NICE win BJ how much did you get for your First win?

Apr 21 2008, 04:31 PM
So - he marked his disc, and after marking it, he was picking his [driver] up, bumped it on the cage back onto the ground where it rolled 15 feet?

Could he not have stated he was picking up his disc, and not putting? Technically when it hit the cage and dropped, it was "away" from the basket, and not towards it.

That is a rule I don't completely understand.

davidsauls
Apr 21 2008, 05:31 PM
Unfortunately, if you're at your lie, it's a throw....doesn't have to be towards the basket:

"Throw: The propulsion of a disc that causes it to change its position from the teeing area or the lie."

I've had to pitch backwards out of particarly deep shule, for example.

However, as described here, that's a pretty harsh application of the rule. I've seen many discs dropped without being called either practice throws or throws (if from the lie).

davidsauls
Apr 21 2008, 05:37 PM
....or, now that I think of it, Paul could argue that it's not propulsion. A question for the rules section of the message board. (I have heard a tale of someone dropping their disc on a teepad and having it roll forward, being forced to take that as a throw, and losing by 1).

MICHAELMART
Apr 21 2008, 07:42 PM
The bottom line is that he didn't ARGUE anything on it. Nobody even sd anything to him he just took it as a throw thinking that's what they thought. And...That's what I ARGUED to him is that he should have argued it. Here's the fact, most likely if the disc was UNDER the basket, then most likely his firm point with the ground wasn't within 30 centimeters of the marker disc. It was most likely outside the 30 centimeters and not directly behind his lie in coordinance with the basket. AND...He had the disc in his hand and it was knocked out. He never released it.

For Example: If you are playing on a blustery day waiting for your turn to shoot say for your 2nd shot. You're standing behind your marker looking at how you're going to play this next shot and the disc blows out of your hand due to its a heavy gust or you're holding the disc loosely; would you be charged with a stroke and that as your throw or would you just pick up your disc. I have many times dropped my disc and it rolled away...

Read the Q&A "Is a drop a throw?" As long as it's not dropped while moving your hand toward the basket, it's not a throw if you drop it or it's knocked out of your hand by maybe bumping a branch.

MICHAELMART
Apr 21 2008, 08:30 PM
SO, it's not a stroke if you are picking up your disc from under the basket and moving away from it when it hits and knocks out of your hand?

Chuck, you always know the answer!!! lol

play the hole out w/ a 2 stroke penalty? so you're saying if everyone drives they should continue to play those drives? i dont think so MTL...

thanks Chuck... this is the way I thought it should be.
Group picks up drives (if they realize it after everyone throws)... goes to the correct pad and plays the correct hole (plus a 1 stroke practice throw penalty).

thanks... thought it was in the Q&A

Passing along the contents of a broadcast e-mail from the tourney's namesake, with permission of the family:

Dear friends,

I want to thank all who donated, played and worked hard to make a great
day for friendship, fun and most of all for helping me help homeless
dogs find loving homes. My folks and Ms. Charlotte Ramsey continue to
be overwhelmed by the generosity and turn out for my annual tournament.
This was the first time we filled the tournament with 90 players signed
up to play.

Through all of you my family has been able to give over $5,000 (some
dog wont go hungry tonight) to F.I.D.O. (Finding Individual Dogs
Only) over the last three years. They have also helped Chapins local
disc golf club (Crooked Creek Disc Golf Club) update and/or replace tee
signs on the course and have donated $600 over the last two years to the
AKTION Club.

For those of you who do not know about the AKTION Club, it is for
mentally challenged adults. We met during our first memorial. They
were cleaning the creek at Crooked Creek Park and asked about what we
were doing. My folks have had some great times over the last couple of
years teaching and playing disc golf with them. Since then they have
helped clean up the disc golf course and my folks continue to teach them
the game of disc golf. This years donation ($350) will help them go
to the North and South Carolina Convention this year. We hope this will
cover most of their gas expense.

I really enjoyed watching the players play my special hole. Crooked
Creek Disc Golf Club made a special tee sign for my hole. It made my
mom cry. Thanks for the tee sign. We hope you can come and visit
Crooked Creek Park and set awhile with me and enjoy the beauty of
Crooked Creek Disc Golf Course the way my family and I do. When I say
family I mean all of you too!!!!!

Thanks and we hope to see you all next year!!!!

Love,

Sayde

P.S. Dad did move the Drop Zone on my hole and everyone that missed
the double mando had a much better chance at saving par. Thanks Dad.
