Should Jrs play from the same tee pads as PROs? I have played in events in the past that had shorter teepads for Ams. Starting last year everyone played from the same pads for every event. I quess this makes player ratings for rounds easier to calculate.

depends on the skill level the course is designed for.

I am the TD for the Cornhusker State Games. I set up a course for juniors only. I want juniors to be able to shoot 3s, 4s and 5s on most holes.
Nothing gets kids down more than throwing shot after shot. They get tired. Short holes keep them moving and keeps them interested. It's nice to give them the ace run, too. I had one hole that had the tee on a hill and the basket about 75 feet away. Even the littlest kid had a chance at it.

I asked some of the TDs about shorter holes for Jrs. They said it was a PDGA rule that Jrs play the same tees as everyone else.

Dave Felberg and Avery Jenkins played form the same tees.

No rule says that. It depends on the event as well. At worlds the <16 and <19 guys should be playing the same tees but besides that most events on longer courses should have them play the same tees as Rec.

They should play (shorter) tees appropriate to their level. However, if the TD does not have Rec or Intermediate division playing the same tees, they likely won't get round ratings unless it's a big Junior division (like 10+ players) where at least 5 are propagators. That's why some TDs falsely think the PDGA wants Jrs to play the same tees as the pros. The idea is to make sure you have enough divisions playing the same tees so they all get ratings.

Thanks Chuck. That clears it up. I want my kids to have ratings so they if they have to play longer tees so be it.

The issue is that Rec and Intermediate should probably be playing the shorter tees at least one round and many times the TD won't do that. If they did, that's usually enough so the younger Juniors (J3/4) can play shorts twice since the official ratings will combine scores on the same layout from both rounds for the calcs.

Those are all good reasons for giving juniors shorter holes. Also when they shoot lower scores they do a better job of reporting true scores. Most of my juniors wanted shorter holes, not ratings, when they were playing in junior divisions. When they started to care about ratings, they started playing in divisions that had the gators.
