(*) I'm very sorry for the delay of the SDGO 2013, (Stockholm Discgolf Open)!.
In september I hurt my arm and could barely do anything. Then I have had some sadness when both my parents passed away around christmas and at the beginning of this year, (12 days apart).
So I've had a lot to process and to do! So thanks for your patience and support...
Best regards/ Jrgen Brodn

Finnish Broadcasting Corporation YLE is a state owned country wide TV company that operates two TV channels and many more media outlets. On TV1 on the daily sports magazine program urheiluruutu was a small segment about the Euro Tour Finnish event Keisari Tali Open today.

The program listed the top three players for tomorrow in MPO with some footage shot by YLE staff. So spoilers ahead. The feed will be available for six days from now Finnish time. The short segment starts at 15:10 and interestingly the next segment was about the top Finnish golfer's latest exploits. Disc golf first :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjnbsPxMkhY&list=UUA6x-UqDXSHuJahZel2jN6A

It was not the highest rated round ever, but the conditions were appalling and everyone on the lead card struggled to even finish.

This video was a rush job so there is some gibberish in the subtitles. Apologies for that although i am not entirely at fault. That is what happens, when everything needs to happen at a moment's notice. Unfortunately there are so many rounds in more important events in the pipeline, that lcgm8 does not have enough time to correct this video at last for the moment.

lcgm8 and Central Coast Disc Golf start off the collaboration during the 2014 World Championships with a star studded card that would be a reasonably good bet even for a final lead card.

Round one players would certainly disagree about them having world, US, European and distance throwing titles and a record to spare. Without further ado here is the luminous cast: Two time and defending world champion Paul McBeth, three time world champion plus overall world champion (twice if i am not mistaken) Nate Doss, multiple US distance champion Steve Brinster who also has a USDGC title to his name and last but not least the biggest and fastest arm on the planet European champion Simon Lizotte of Bremen, Germany holding the official distance record of unbelievably long and laughably much more beyond that. Lets call that over twice to you or me :-) And a modest disc exit speed of 144 kilometers per hour or roughly 90 miles per hour!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuDbL6ciARA&list=UUy1Rr-GkiL8vlPApKsw6SuA

I know this video is linked in the media>video list on the main page, but i included the link here as well for the sake of completeness of the announcements of the vids lcgm8 has put up of important events.

PDGA Euro Tour Prodiscus Estonian Open Round 1 part 1. Valgehobuseme sport center hosted most of the players and the course. First round players are: Sofie Sandstrm FPO (SWE), Jasper Heino MPO (FIN), Prancikus Gricius MJ1 (LTU) and Martin Rotmeister MPO (EST).

Juha said that this time the course was physically the most demanding he has filmed in Estonia and it must have been tough for the ladies and juniors. Sofie is a veteran of the sport and in Europe she has always got to be counted as a favorite in any tournament she enters. Jasper and Prancikus are junior aged but Jasper made his break through last year and elevated his level a lot and having had a growth spurt he shows no signs of slowing down. Prancikus is a part of the great Gricius family the heart and soul of Lithuanian disc golf and movers and shakers in PDGA Europe. Martin is one of the top players of Estonia.

Finnish championships 2015 MPO final front 9 with Pasi Koivu, Teemu Nissinen, Joonatan Hme and Rene Honkanen. These local youngsters are good and a lead card spot at national championships with previous medalists Pasi and Teemu is like a pro clinic. Check out how mature these young guns are and how well they play versus their ratings. I expect that you will hear good things from them in the future. Joonatan is 15 years old.

Commentary in Finnish by Sami Poimala and Visa Ruuhinen. The statistics are average scores on the hole throughout the tournament and the numbers 1-x and so forth mean that the average score fo the hole is calculated between players of those placements overall after the event was finished. The three different averages for the top, the majority and the worst placing players indicate how hard the hole is and what the spread of scores between the players faring differently is. The lowest numbers are the best and worst individual score on the hole throughout the event.

Finnish championships 2013 round 1 with Jenni Eskelinen FPO, Joona Heinnen MPO, Henrik Lindevall juniors 15 and Markus Pysti juniors 15. The event was held at Tammisaari, Finland on a course with a lot of elevation changes and plenty of tree lined fairways that are fairly tight on many holes.

Jenni went on to win the European championship the next year. I have seen Joona play twice and for a young player he shows a lot of talent. Henrik defends his championship title here but he had not played as much that season after spending most of his time on the course at Tali in previous years. He started another sports and activities that took away time from disc golfing due to getting burned out by playing too much. He can mimick the technique of many top players of the world and has picked and matched details for his own form so you can see the effort he has made after getting tips and guidance from Avery, Feldy and Nate among others. Markus threw far already but next year he took a huge distance leap and bombs! Check out a round with him previously released on this channel and check out how limber his hips are. Due to time constraints for editing Juha did not even ask me for translations for the interviews so I will return here with a detailed translation later. The people being interviewed in Finnish are Niko Rtty the then reigning Finnish under 16 champion who took 2nd place eventually in juniors and Ville Kotamki the president of Finnish Frisbeegolf Association. Niko talks about what happened and how things changed and evolved as the 3rd round progressed with the upset he experienced and how the weather changed and what it changed in his game. It is an interesting analysis of what goes on at a high level in playing and how mature such a young player can be as a person and a competitor. Ville talks of the event and how it is organized and what the coming together of multiple nations does for the sport and compares what goes on in Finland versus elsewhere in disc golf. He also talked about what media exposure and getting women to compete means.

In the meanwhile waiting for the translations below is the link for the only hole I filmed entirely of the FPO lead card. I did catch a few individual throws on the last holes but it did not show much of the game so I'll tell you an in my opinion funny anecdote instead.

One year before I had seen videos of Jenni Eskelinen throwing and thereafter live as well. I told her that even though she is an elite stand still thrower among women and better than many men distance wise she could benefit from adding steps to her throws. She was not too comfortable taking steps in high level competition at this point but had it down well enough along with the rest of the game that she lead on hole 14 of the final. This was the first season that she did not resort to only driving standing still. I was filming MPO lead card when they caught up with the ladies so I got a couple of their throws on film. I caught up with the ladies after their drives and Jenni told me she lead by 1 and that the tension was terrible. I hope she does not mind me telling this. Please don't punch me Jenni I gave you the congratulatory coconut chocolate afterward :-D

I know she is in shape because she studied to become a personal trainer at that time so I knew that she did not require a caddy to carry her bag to help her continuing to reign. But to help her with the mental game I knew she could use a caddy. I had to apologize to Jenni that I was tied up with filming the MPO group so I could not caddy for her. Hannele as well but later she got a caddy from the Czech MPO team because the wife of the Czech Open TD wanted a Finnish shirt so he asked Hannele if she would be willing to part with her shirt afterward in exchange for getting a caddy. So I looked around and spotted two Finnish veteran players spectating on hole 15. I had to wait until the men had thrown their drives so that I could dash to ask the vets if they would caddy for Jenni. Hey we Finns have a proverb at looking televised sporting events through blue and white colored glasses (the colors of our flag). So in the words of the club president that arranges Tali Open "honestly pulling toward home" was the name of the game ;-) I was a staffer, a videographer and a swing coach already up to that point so what is acting as an arranger for the national team on top of that as well? Call it frisbee spirit and volunteerism :D

Luckily the other guy took up the the caddying task and I had enough time to explain the situation that Jenni could use the mental support and the gentleman in question was a long time member of the board of Finnish Frisbeegolf Association Ari Penttala. He is a cool customer and a great father figure for disc golf not only as a caddy but also nation wide as a board member for the national association. Thus the disc golfing nation. I knew I left Jenni in excellent hands with a man that has great control of the nerves and who is a calming influence to all around him and told her that I mustered up Ari as a trusty support, and I am not gonna say side kick because he is so much more than that in his own right. He lead Ville Piippo in the Finnish championships last year in masters division and that is not everything the Sir is capable of.

So you can see what happened in the finals for yourselves here with the FPO lead card on hole 18 with Natalie Holloki (SUI) on home turf trailing Jenni Eskelinen (FIN) ahead of a former FPO European champion Camilla Jernberg (SWE) and Hannele Mtt (FIN):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWq3ZWj8zOE

Spoiler alert after this!!!

After the dust had settled Ari was talking with Martin Jenny (SUI) who had also participated in the event competitively and they know each other from way back. So I asked Martin that did he realize that Ari is a champion here? In that he was the master mind behind Jenni's victory? Ari had trouble keeping up a straight face and failed. Still it took Martin a while to realize the joke I played on him :-) Martin answered that he spotted Ari caddying for Jenni though.

But let us give credit where it is due. Jenni was doing just fine by herself throughout the event and extended her lead by 1 from hole 14 come tee 18.

Here we have the reigning Finnish under 16 year old champion Niko rtty who was tied in the lead after round 1. How would have you placed in Open?

Tied 9th with the 4th best score.

On round you took the solo lead and it was a good place in Open as well.

It would have been 13th.

How did your 3rd round go?

The beginnig was very hard. I began with a 9 on a par 3 island hole. Then I thought this is not it and I continued to play normally and it started to go well. I birdie 5 of the next holes in a row. I took a bogey to stop the birdie streak so the front 9 was a few over. I started the back 9 well with two birdies then took a bogey on the island hole then I played the rest of the six holes 6 under.

You were playing hard how did it influence the other players?

I caught up with them during the back 9 and took the lead once more despite giving up 7 strokes on the first hole. I am really pleased with a round score of -3 after such a start.

Did you learn anything about mental game and how to prevent another snow man on an island hole?

My throws from the drop zone were identical and threw just a little long. I had not trained throwing from the DZ and I should definitely have trained. Taking the 9 did not matter and I could continue playing well.

Few can can recover from such a start and retake the lead do you think that the mental game is your strong suite?

It could be. I did not get stressed out but it was hard to continue after taking 6 over when i had not been above par until that. I got a feeling that now I cannot let up and did not feel like letting up but attack with all my might.

Did the other players get dismayed when you retook the lead?

They played normally. Me and Albin were a little worse off after 2 holes and the rest played improved. I think they forgot about me after starting poorly.

A classic mistake.

They thought was out of the mix.

That is the advantage of the trailing player in that it is to demoralize the others after you have gained them. They may not have the ability to charge to the finish after thinking they can cruise along to the win.

You did not suffer from the wind during the round like those who are playing now.

The wind picked up in the end of our round and it did influence the game. We started out early and the ground was really slippery during front 9. The discs skipped a lot and we had to dry up them all the time. The ground dried up after the sun came out but then the wind began and so it became another factor but it was easier to paly in the wind.

Were the tees slippery early on? (I had swept the morning dew from each tee before the rounds each day but in places drops began to concentrate again for some of the early groups)

I had no problems with the tees so I could not blame them for anything.

How did the wind change the flight and how you planned your throws in terms of attacking or taking a placement throw?

I had to play aggressively to get a good score and I succeeded. The wind played a major role in disc selection and the shape of the flight. I took more overstable discs on the longer holes and they flew well. I am used to playing in the winds in Oulu area.

Could you tell us what kind of discs did you use on 17 and 18 in the drives where an overstable disc is at a risk of going awry?

On 17 I threw a backspin anhyzer under the branches with a Gator. It started out a little anhyzered and landed hyzer halfway through and skipped to 3 meters for an easy birdie. 18 is a long par 5 where the first throws are very important. I tried to throw far with an MD2 anhyzered but missed a little and wound up in the thickets. From there a sidearm out to a great place 100 m from the basket for a birdie chance. There the wind messed up the approach because I did not dare to throw far enough over the OB fearing the wind could slap the disc down. I ended up 10 m left of the basket. I had a headwind in the putt and hit the top band for a par.

How did you prepare for this event and trained generally in the year after taking the Finnish champion title?

I train a lot in the yard because we have the space and I have many baskets so I train approaches and putts a lot. Longer throws are for training fields and courses. I train them to maintain the touch. For this event and during the season I have paid a lot more attention to muscle conditioning ans stretching. They are certainly a part in having raised up my game to another level.

Did you change your training routine for this event?

No this is a tournament among many others just bigger.

Is Switzerland too hot for someone from so far up north?

It is pretty warm here but it is nicer to play in this kind of weather than in the cold.

You get an overdose of cold back home.

Yeah.

It is god to see new countries and players.

Yes.

Do you think that it helps your future development to see other players than Finns?

It is always different playing with people from different countries because they have a different kind of disc golf culture. Communicating is not similar so there is less talking than with other Finns. I get to see a lot pf different kind of players and frisbee cultures and it is cool.

Have you been taught by or copied ideas from foreign players here?

Laughingly I have not copied anything I play my own game and if I need to change anything I will do that later.

Do you make a detailed play book for every course you play?

I play training rounds and memorize the plan and try to stick to that and not make any stupid mistakes. I managed to do that during this round despite the first hole.

Do you have an advantage in sticking to the play book and having self control over the others?

Probably I think that you cannot get back the strokes that you have taken. You have the extra strokes and you just continue to play normally not making dumb decisions. They just add to your score.

After round 2: Ville Kotamki the president of The Finnish Frisbeegolf Association. How has the tournament been for you and the Finnish team up to now?

My tournament is worse than I had hoped for but it has turned for the better with the second round score improving. I have ways to go but there is half of the tornament left. As for the Finnish team I looked at the scores and in the 6 divisions there are 5 Finns in top 2 which is very good for Finland.

What can be done for taking more top places than just Ellinoora Heikkil?

I would say that we are going in the correct direction Finns are extremely high in the level of competitiveness, organizating works the courses are in great shape, we have a lot of competitors for each tournament and top players tour actively abroad. So certainly we are moving ahead in the correct direction.

We have 24 nations here which is more than ever anywhere according to Brian Hoeniger. We have new participating countries like Poland, Slovenia and Croatia what being here means such countries and what tips could they take from Finnish experiences for their development?

This is certainly a big thing for them and they gain experience of international large tournaments and organizing them. From what I have heard Finns are appreciated a lot in here and our experiences of tounaments and organizing them. Certainly a lot of information is exchanged throughout the week.

A lot of training information is certainly being shared between nations here but how are things progressing in Finland?

We are moving ahead with the forming of a coaching and education task force of the Frisbeegolf Association a year ago. We should be able to begin the first courses during this autumn.

Someone outside of Finland may think why bother when Niko Rtty is tied for the lead in juniors and Ellinoora leads women with many men close to the top spot.

There are 20-30 future Niko Rttys in weekly events so we need to find them and get them to be coached by right people. We have worked for getting more girls and women to paly and compete through which we shall find ne Ellinooras as well.

Swiss champion Natalie Holloki told that there are only 3 actively competing female players in Switzerland. There are plenty in Finland and in Helsinki they could be an eight of the players on the courses at any time. How have we managed to get so many to play and how others could follow suite?

Women tend to start competing less often than men so local clubs have the responsibility of making playing attractive and making the step to participate low. Different kinds of activities, events and competitions could be made for women alone.

What has been the role of visibility in the media for the growth of Finnish disc golf? We have been in the newspapers, television and major media outlets for years. How similar successes could be duplicated elsewhere?

The importance is really great adn at the moment there is plenty of interest among the media and we get lots of contacts and asking where we are at. From this tournament we get press releases sent to the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation who publish them on their web site. It takes a lot of work and contacting the media to create the boom there is no shortcut for doing it.

Did the media get interested with the growth of the amount of players or through active disc golfers contacting the media?

There is no single reason and everything together has had a large positive influence. The sport has grown immensely with the amount of participants and we get large international events broadcast on national television and that feeds the growth more so everything together has made it possible.

Have you have other comments about disc golf in general and this Championship?

After two days I can say that this is a great tournament and well organized but the demanded level in Finland is so high that normal club organized C Tiers are equal regarding the courses, organizing, scoring etc. So there is nothing new here but the facilities and surroundings are great and the course and organizing are great so it has been an all round success.

From what I have seen this is not idle bragging and it is a good things that the Swiss can match us. Thank you and good luck in the next rounds.

Thank you.
