I've heard some rumors that the upcoming construction along Lamar might force COTO to change venues. Is that a possibility or is it definitely going to be at Pease?
justice
Mar 11 2008, 04:23 PM
COTO will not be changing venues, and the Pease Park Disc Golf Course is already reserved for that weekend (Friday-Sunday).
If the construction gets far enough along, it will cause some changes, and I'm looking to some older/original layouts of the course for the solution.
It just wouldn't be COTO if it wasn't at Pease ;)

Why do they insist on making Pro Women's entry fees the same as Pro Men? I want to play in this but I wish (in the future) they would consider the field size of Pro Women. I was discussing this with other Pro Women at Texas States and we all seem to agree that Pro Women's entry fees don't need to be the same as Pro Men. It's discouraging. It really stings when you pay a high entry fee in a field of only 3 Pro Women and only 1 walks away with all the cash.

I nominate Mitch Justice to chain himself to number 5's basket in order to stop the bulldozers!!! If the city actually gets this project started on time (when was the last time the City of Austin did anything on time?) we would probably lose #2 - #6. We could use old #2, and split current #7 into three holes like the old design...that still leaves the need for one more hole.
I find it highly unlikely Patty would have to take these redesign measures b/c the city moves so slow....
james_mccaine
Apr 17 2008, 03:20 PM
Let's hope not; that's the difference between a decently good course and crap. What are the long-term effects? Are they just putting in a utility line, or are they doing major creek work ala Bart?
mitchjustice
Apr 17 2008, 03:54 PM
The first stage of construction will only effect the deep postion on #4 and maybe the tee for #5...in the second stage #2-#6 will be unplayable...they have still not started the first stage...they are running drain lines under the creek...one will go under where the deep position for #4 is and the other will go right behind the tee for #6...We have talked to the city about some all new holes that would play between #14 and #15 just for COTO if the construction starts before then...and they will not even need sting(think sidewalks and roads OB) :D

A 'host' hotel will be announced soon, but it's always a tough weekend for getting a good room at a good price (graduation).
If you're up for camping, Emma Long Park (http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/parks/emmalong.htm) is another option. I think it's about 20 minutes or so from Pease, and happens to be across the water (part of the lake but river width) from a live music venue. (http://www.pierlakeaustin.com/1024.php)

all the above and very technical, only about 3 or 4 long holes and they are all under 700 ft

Apr 30 2008, 02:46 PM
There's always a swirly wind since the entire course surrounds a low lying creek bed (Shoal Creek). Water does come into play on 8 holes....4 creek crossings so don't bother bringing a cart. A pro would shoot ~ -8 to -10 on the short pin placements, -5 to -8 on the medium pins, and -2 to -3 down on the long course. Traditionally you will play all three setups...
james_mccaine
Apr 30 2008, 03:12 PM
An ex-bubble boy, just finishing a 10K, would walk out of his car, practice eight putts, and shoot a -5 on the longs. A guy that can shoot a 60 at Manor and ace hole 16 there will yank and saw off shots, scare eeyore-loving families with his errant shots, hit some monster putts and shoot well over par. :p
Strange things happen out there at Pease. ;)

Dane Pickens broke his ankle/calf at Worlds Biggest at J. Brooks last Saturday. He's in the hospital, and wont be making it, FYI.
Posted on Monday, May 05, 2008 - 04:02 pm:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dane broke both the bones in his lower left leg. The tibia about 3 inches above his ankle, and fibula about 4 inches below his knee. One doctor estimated a six month recovery time.
I know what Dane is going through, it is tough not being able to get out and chunk a disc.
At least i now know that I am not the only one who has done something like this.
Can you say VICODEN. :D:o:D
Better yet, can you say Morphine drip... The dude is in need of a pray or 2. He's a self employed painter with a wife expecting their first child.
God speed Dane...
A prayer was said when I first read it. I was lucky that it was only my tibia and with surgery I was back walking within about 6 weeks and playing about 3 weeks later.
Morphine drip is better than vicoden, but that only is available in the hospital. Vicoden can be taken at home and refilled once.
After my surgery, the doctor sent a small ice cooler home with me that had a bladder at the end of tubes and a pump motor in the ice chest. My wife would fill the ice chest with ice and water and the pump would then circulate the ice water around my leg. To tell the truth, that felt better than any medicine ever made me feel.
Tell Dane we are thinking about him here in San Antonio.

Mitch and Patty,
Please move Nicole Cazares from Advanced Women's to the Intermediate Women's division. Although Nicole will definitely be playing in the tournament, she is still not 100% healed from her partially torn quad.
The good news is that she was able to throw a few practice drives today without feeling any pain. This was the first time in almost two months that she could actually throw even 3/4's speed.
Even though she will probably finish last in Intermediate Women's division, she is really looking forward to playing again and slowly working her way back.
See you this weekend.............Rick and Nicole

There is plenty of water but all of it is shallow enough to see and retrieve your disc. The only exception to this is #2...it's been know to gobble up big hyzers.
I heard on the news that huge trees were down at Pease because of the storms last night. There might be a last second push to get the course in shape before Saturday. May 16 2008, 11:22 AM
I agree about those tee boxes. They're atrocious AND unsafe. The winner of this tournament shoudn't be predicated on who can best avoid hitting a rock, stump, root, or rut in the tee boxes.
There are a lot of holes where it's a simple matter of marking new tee boxes just a few feet behind or next to the current ones.
But alas, I know our complaints --- as legitimate and easy to resolve as they are --- will probably yield nothing more than rolled-eyes.
Of course the real (and only) solution for Pease is concrete tees.

Dear God,
Why do I have to work today? My friend has already driven to Pease and is practicing to beat me. My brain can't think about writing java when my mind is concentrating on hyzers, rollers, and flicks. The crew in Austin is so much fun to hang around, why can't you let me leave work early at least? Are you punishing me for throwing those discs back in the links after you saw me swim for hours just to find a few of my own? Please let the power go out or the A/C to shutdown. I won't call in a bomb threat, but you could do something I'm sure. Give me one moment of Pease and I'll go to church the first weekend we aren't at a tournament.

Even though we arent running it any more, Waterloo Disc Golf Club continues to be involved in COTO. We will be <font color="red"> giving away TWO BASKETS </font> this weekend.
Well have one basket as the grand prize in our raffle . Well also have lots of other cool prizes. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Well be selling tickets Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Well draw the winners Sunday afternoon/evening. You do not need to be present to win.
Well give away the other basket at our putting game . Well have 3 putting positions with 4 putts from each spot. It only costs $1 to play with the highest point getter winning the basket. You can play as many times as youd like. Well have this set up Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the park, plus hopefully at the Saturday night players party.
Finally, well be having a membership drive: $10 off a Player Membership (normally $20) and $15 off a Supporting Membership (normally $40). That means you can join the club this weekend for as little as $10.
Well also be available for all existing members who want to renew their membership for 2008 or beyond. Plus well have an extra bonus gift from Disc Nation for everyone who renews their membership.
So come on down to Pease Park this weekend for a great disc golf time. Even if you arent playing, there will be lots to do and some great golf to watch. The Pros final 9 holes on Sunday afternoon should be excellent to see.

Hole #14 will need to fixed!!!!!!!!!!!
After an epic battle of man vs. nature, we managed to pull down the first fallen tree blocking the fairway. The second is much sturdier and we might have to resort to just clipping the limbs as high as we can reach. While not ideal, it should provide a fairly reasonable route for a birdie.
As for the teepads... Wear shoes with good ankle support.

Had some good card-mates...hope to play with a few more of you in up coming events. Got a little backed up, but hey 150 people on a 18 hole course what do you expect right???
This was my first Austin tourney...and I had a blast. Hope to start making more...although that 3 1/2 hour drive was a tough one leaving at 6:00...no way I could have stayed any longer and made it back for work this morning...BOO WORK!

Thanks to everyone who was involved in any way with this event. We had an awesome time. That course is great. I developed a couple of new shots out there. And thanks to whoever rigged the raffle for me to win the basket. I'm mowing my backyard right after this.
Want to give out mad props to the deaf disc golfer that repped down in Austin this weekend.
Congratulations!! Keep that hot putter up for Deaf Disc Golf Nationals, we'll be gunning for you :)

Does anyone know how I can get in touch with Daniel Ajtai? We did some trading last night and when I got home I realized I gave him the wrong COTO stamped disc and would like to rectify the situation.

I will be sure to pass that on to "Ole Wamski"(as we like to call him) at the mini wednesday. Good to meet and play a round with you as well. I'm sure we'll meet up again at some point. Maybe even in your neck of the woods....
Oh and glad you liked it. I'll tell the brewer.

I had to post a couple of pics...
The first is of Erron Salazar that won the Pro CTP on hole #11 in the long position.
His drive measured 7 feet from the pin! :D

Next picture is of Big Shawn with the best second shot of the tournament that I saw. He layed up to the drop zone on hole #11 in the long position and threw a thumber straight into the basket.
INCREDIBLE !!! :D

I will post more as time allows. I have about 200 pics to sort out.
Still looking for the one of Vinnie's donkey. :D
Look at the one right after payout......he has his back turned (showing his donkey) while he counts his money! Good job Vinnie.

Team Justice, thanks for the great weekend! You guys and your staff did an awesome job getting the course ready after that storm, then running things smoothly throughout the weekend. The O.B. lines were great, no doubt because of the paint Sherpa :) . The cards I played on were fun, Masters is a great division. See you in Kyle....

I brought lost and found discs in from Texas States QVCC but then because of an injury, dehydration, and logistics, I left them at the tournament Sunday. Just wanted to get confirmation as to where those might have gone. Thanks for a great tournament Patty!

Definitely. Congratulations to Justin. He played some smokin' hot golf this weekend.
Plus, you gotta love it when the Open winner has a lower rating than the Intermediate winner.

I probably enjoyed this tournament as much or more than any in a long, long time. Very well run and organized. Great course that played very challenging. And Masters is definitely a great division --- lots of great sportsmanship, competition, and camaraderie.
Looking forward to Kyle and Manor in the next few months.

Thanks Mitch,
Just wanted to make sure they weren't still at Pease. Sorry for leaving them; I was so completely exhausted by Sunday afternoon that I just messed up and forgot them. Just remember folks; if you get a disc back, a lot of folks made sacrifices to get them where they are. Be patient and they will find their way to owners (so long as you actually marked them.) Mitch, I'm sorry for the extra burden. You guys ran an incredible tournament (and this is coming from the guy at the bottom of the heap.)

Thank you Team Justice!!
Once again, another great event ran by great people. Thank you for all the staffers and anyone else involved that made this such a great event. I enjoyed my best finish ever @ COTO and plan to play this event as much as possible in the upcoming years.
Not to end this on a bad note, but I noticed some things that upset a few people and wanted to bring them up here. I have never run a tourney and am not going to tell anyone what should and shouldn't be done while handling such a large event. However, I was wondering if there is something that can be done to improve the way awards/payout is taken care of. I was one of the lucky players that won some payout and was happy to wait my turn to pick my plastic. I noticed several players were able to "cash out" before anything was even announced. I wasn't botthered so much by this, because I know it can be hard to police the players coming into the store. I was fortunate enought to finish 3rd, which meant that I was in the 3rd round of players allowed to come in to pick my plastic. I didn't get out of the park until after 9pm. I may be rambling on and on here, but I wanted to see if anything can be done to improve the flow of payout or if it is something that will always be such a long drawn out process at the end of a long weekend of playing golf.
Thanks again for hearing my observations, and by no means am I suggesting that the TD or Team Justice has done anything but an outstanding job running these tournaments.
Thanks,
Matt

I have no idea whose disc it was, but whoever drove last on #11 in the MPO final nine final card threw it O.B., but was saved by the official/spotter's chair, which was set up in bounds(?!) It was hyzering straight into the creek when it hit his chair and lay down inches from the line. My girlie was sitting in it, and got this shot of the disc coming in. That's my sexy rear you see there, along with the spotter. "That's the first one that hit that thing all day!" he said. http://a607.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/59/l_2cde88b84fa98596f0d049193ce81236.jpg
Special congrats to all my Pease Park homies Shannon Bowles, Brad Williams, John Hovey, and Mark McCrimmon for winning their respective divisions. See y'all in Kyle.

May 21 2008, 12:14 PM
Hope it wasn't Alex's or Anthony's drive that got saved by the chair. I landed right by his chair and went OB, and then he tells me that the chair can't be moved because it's part of the course. Why in the hell was it in the inbounds part of the course, it could have easily been set up in the OB section to avoid any of these situations. Oh well maybe next year.

Depends whether the chair was placed there before or after the round started. If the chair was there before the round started, then (in theory) it should have remained in that exact position for everyone throwing. If it was placed there after the round started, players could ask that it be moved.

MJ,
I liked the way that payout worked at Gonzales real well. With tee times, I can't see the point of keeping ams around for 5-6 hours before payout is available. Was there something that didn't work for y'all with that process?
ThePatrick
May 21 2008, 07:23 PM
Yeah... 5-6 hours is a little rough. Every time we've been out to Austin for a tourney we roll back into Houston between 11pm and midnight. After 2 days of tourney that always rough. I was lucky enough to not have to work monday.

I have no idea who's disc it was Joe, but I just thought it was funny - but then again it's not my prize $ we're speaking of. In a perfect world, he would've set it up OUT of bounds so the worst that could've happened was a wild bounce off the chair back in bounds, but once it's there for one throw, he's gotta leave it there for the rest of the round. The last official shot thrown on that hole for the tourney was the first to hit it and stay in. Awesome. The caveat is let's make sure all spotters' equipment is set up OUT of bounds from now on.

That happened to be the only place were I could set it to be in the shade and spot the line. I've been in that same spot with the same chair for three years. How 'bout you spot hole #11 next year so I can play?
the_kid
May 22 2008, 12:35 AM
That isn't as bad as what happened in Tulsa. Felberg's 2nd shot on the par 4 last hole was going to skip OB but it hit az guy's bike 2ft from the line and rolled15ft toward the basket. He made the 40fter to tie for 2nd and force Avery to make his to win.

May 22 2008, 12:54 AM
Avery won by two. :p And Des was [censored] off! I can't figure out why Dave didn't throw the hyzer, guess it doesn't make a difference since he got the 30' roll off of the bike tire guy.

what happens to those of us who didn't get a chance to pick up our voucher form the doubles. I played "Not Pro" and may of placed 3rd or 4th. I played with "Bird" and we shot a -5. Would it be possible to keep it in the books for the next tour? I am really looking forward to the Kyle Open next month and I will probley be in need of some discs after playing that course.
Thanks yall :D
