Just a reminder- If you are attending this year, I strongly advise you to get your accommodations ASAP. The is a major car show in town, also.

Hello Paul,

I hope all is doing well with you. I just wanted to touch base with you regarding the room block we had set up a couple months ago for 30 non smoking doubles for July 12-14. As of right now, I don't have any of those rooms taken. Now, we are still two months away from the cutoff date, but I definitely recommend that people book in advance. I don't think we will have rooms available for walk-ins on those dates after that room block is filled. Let me know if you need anything, I'll be more than happy to help you. Thanks Paul! Have a great weekend!

Shick's 44 in the 2nd round is unofficially rated at 1092!!!

What in tarnation happened to Barry Schultz? How does a 1029-rated player shoot a 60, a 945-rated round?

How does a 1029-rated player shoot a 60, a 945-rated round?

anyone can shoot anything at anytime.

Matt Orum show like 859 at worlds last year.

KC shot in the 940s at the KC Wide Open last year and in the 950s at the memorial a few years ago.

The key between a top player and an average pro is rounds like the one Barry had and those mentioned above, rarely happen.

But, a bad round is not avoidable by anyone.

The latter two are somewhat understandable because of all the OB on those layouts.

Orum's 876-rated round was on Blueberry Hill which had very little OB. I don't think the Brent Hambrick layout at Hoover Dam has very much OB.

Dana

Brad is one of my best buddies in disc golf and he will be the first to say that a 44 isn't no 1092...The course hasn't changed in all the years I played it. This is why I don't pay much attention to ratings because they are influenced to much by what the top players shoot. Barry was probably [censored] about the rain delays and gave up on his round...Feldberg is nursing a knee injury and isn't playing up to his potential. Just because BS throttled them the round was rated so high???

I have played th BHMO several times and 44 has been shot every year. Last year on the same set up it was only worth 1065, in 2006 44 was only worth 1061, 2005 it was 1059, 2004 it was only 1044....2003 Stevie shot 1 better 43 and it was only 1067 and this year 44 was 1092 ??? How could a round that has been shot there every year all of a sudden be one of the top 5 rated rounds? The 2nd course isn't that tough, just because the top players there had some adversity it's one of the 5 best....I call BS (not Brad Schick) :D

The wind is why some course ratings can change up to 5 shots which can be 40-60 ratings points depending on the course. A 44 is not always 44 from a ratings standpoint.

But that can happen even without wind! If the good guys shoot bad the top score is inflated end of story.

cgkdisc
Jul 13 2008, 02:38 PM
Doesn't happen with that many players and Barry's round isn't part of the calculation since it's more than 70 below his rating. Feldberg shot within 1 shot of his rating regardless of his knee in that round.

ninafofitre
Jul 13 2008, 02:39 PM
THe course has 12+ holes under 330ft...I don't care if the wind was blowing 50+...some of the top players will find the way to get on the correct side of the hole. Brad has a great spin putt that the wind barely affects....GOOD FOR BRAD!!! I wish we had live scoring.

And if the wind is the case for a high rating my 2003 Shoot the Breeze round of 46 in Ashtabula, OH should have been 1287 rated round....Gale force winds of 70mph+ off of Lake Erie was the most extreme, ridiculous, asinine conditions ever. I miss the OHIO crew, even Stewart :D

cgkdisc
Jul 13 2008, 02:42 PM
Doesn't matter what the top players shoot. It's all players on the layout. If the top guys play better in the wind than the field, good for them. It doesn't mean the course isn't playing tougher which is what the ratings reference.

It will be rare for anyone to have a personal record rating on a 27-hole layout versus an 18. It will always be closer to their own rating 499 out of 500 rounds.

Blakely continues to bring out the best in his opponents. Stickboy is shooting great but his mouth is driving the other players to shoot well. Remember Disc 'n Dat Bluegrass Open where Avery Jenkins deforested Idlewild with a scorching 58 from the longs the final round to beat Blakely by 10 in the round and 4 strokes overall? Could this be another tournament where Stickboy inspires the best in his competition and Brad shoots the rounds of his life?

To be continued.......

Nothing flawed about a system that does its job in comparing your play to the play of the competitors. The ratings system doesn't compare the play of a competitor to the difficulty of a course, and if you're STILL telling yourself after all these years that it is then of course you're going to become disillusioned. If you manage to realize that the ratings system is all about comparing a competitor to the scores of those he competes against, then the system looks sound.

McBeth Tied for 4th and lost the playoff to be in the final. I Think Jay was 7th, and I am sure Paul beat me so some where between 8th and 11th. BTW I got to play with Paul and Paul the second round both great golfers and pretty cool guys. I have been gone for so long I don't know the players anymore. SO many people I have never played with. I think there were only 6 of us in the open with 4 digit PDGA #s. I'm getting old. Other players between 8th and 11th were Geoff Bennet, Kim Scott Wood with a hot -9 today, Dave Feldburg, I'm not thinking of the one other person...... Sorry.

Answer this question?

When is it NOT windy at that place? The dam is one of the greatest wind generators ever on a course (when they are releasing water.) I'm just not buying the wind was crazy theory. I have played the courses there probably 25-30 times and it's usually a 15 to 20mph wind on a good day, plus the elevation changes on the courses makes it challenging every day.

All in all, the BHMO is a great tourney and I am sure that Brent would be extremely proud of what that event has turned into over the years, and extremely proud of Brad. I don't think a local Columbus guy has ever won the Open title there.

I will never forget the first time I met Brent in 1995 in Norman Oklahoma. He and Mikey Randolph teamed up for friday night dubs at NE Lions, I was lucky enough to get paired up with them. It was a delight to get to see Brent play golf, he was an awesome guy.

*thinks*
Schick
Orrick
Blakely
Olson
McBeth
McNutt
Sharp

I believe that was the top 7. I think. Reading was the other name in the 8-11 group you were thinking of. I could be wrong though.

You're still making a huge mistake in logic here.

You're trying to pin the rating on the course. That isn't how the system works, isn't how it has ever worked. If you continue to make this mistake you will continue to be disillusioned. The ratings system is based on how you played as compared to your competition. It doesn't matter if it was humidity, rain, wind, snow... whatever. The question is: how did you play as compared to the competition.

It is not and never has been how you played as compared to the course.

Brad Schick SMOKED the competition. He has a 1092 rated round. Makes perfect sense.

Yeah Cory Sharp was the other I was trying to think of, he was in my group Duh! He shot a -3 I think today. And Chris, Mcnutt was in 6th the highest local in the event in the open that is not referred to as "Schick". :) Not to mention he gets to go to his first USDGC event! Congrats Gaige!

I'm trying to look at it with an open mind but it looks as if that just because the top 3 rated guys (Barry, Borg, & Bennett) schuled it must have been way hard...I'm just saying that Brad would average a 46 there if he played 20 rounds on it, in any conditions

My main beef with the ratings is that good rounds are not always rewarded just because there isn't 1030 golfers at the event. If Barry, Borg, & Bennett wouldn't have played far below their capabilities it would have been 1060 to 1070 just like any other year.

I don't even know why I'm arguing I don't give a ratsass abooot ratings....Ratings are so bias of where you play your home golf at...I have never been in the top 40 in ratings but I have 3 Top 10's, 6 top 20's at Worlds and 2 top 10's at USDGC.....Wins and Losses is all that matters and my boy BRAD just scored a HUGE ONE!!!! ;)

Kevin, Exact Same course 1 month ago and much easier Conditions.... Brad shot 2 47s so you are about right, Might want to check out Tyler's 11 under the second round of that event....

Oh And I saw brad miss a couple putts on that -10

Tyler shouldn't count he throws 700 ft hyzers :D

I guarantee that Brad left a few out there...If Brad's round was 1092, if the Borg's round at the Memorial was 1095....Skinner's round at The Grange in Virginia back in 05 should have been 1220 :D

Brad and I watched Tyler Shoot a -14 on the 27 hole course 2 weeks ago *cough*with a bogey*cough* although hole 4 was under construction and missing the basket, we skipped it, but I am pretty sure that day he would have birdied it too. :) Calmest coolest day I can ever remember playing in June /July in Columbus. Perfect conditions.

I would say that the course this year looked it's best it ever has, so much work was put in this year. And it showed. Much thanks to the crew that did all of that work on all the holes, especially Hole 4 and 7. Thanks Guys. those that stayed home or waited to pay too late, you missed out, even if the weather didn't cooperate. I wish the rope would be permanent on the letter holes. Man it makes a difference. Those holes were way cooler with rope.

But it wasn't just those guys, it was the entire field. Just a month ago I threw a few 52s on the course, Rauch threw way under, Tyler tore it up (just using the people I know as reference), lots of guys played a lot better. EVERYBODY played way under their game except for Brad, he killed it... therefore he got a huge rating.

And you can't use Schultz as a part of your reasoning because with a 945 rated round he's too far below his actual rating to actually count as a part of the calculations.

K Mack........All those short holes you are talking about have been lengthened........They moved the pin back on hole 2...........They moved the pin back on hole 5...........Then moved the tee back on hole 12 about 50 or so feet............They moved the pin on hole 13 back so it is about 80 ft past the trees from where I remember it being in years past.........The tee on hole 18 has also been moved farther back to make it longer...........And with the conditions the way there were it may not be deserving of a 1092 but its for sure a pretty legit 1080 or better.......Specially with the rain and the rain delays and all the other factors going into how the course played Saturday afternoon!!!

Oh and that Mills bash im sure is printed out and framed in K Macks house somewhere.......If he can find it id love a good laugh!!!

Go Discraft!!!

Thanks to all for the kind words, it was a sweet feeling to make that last putt from 12 feet. As for the round rating, I seem to think it's a bit inflated personally although it was my best round ever on that side of the **** with the worst conditions I have seen there. It really depended more on where you started on the course and I think the first three or four groups got a bit lucky due to the bad weather moving through. Some of the toughest holes (14,15, 17, & 1) with OB we probably had less wind than others. We still had some tough winds though, Barry was right in front of our group and took a 9 on hole one so believe me when I say the holes were still playing tough! I guess that is just golf though, I have had it go the other way for sure! Gotta love the Force and Surge...that is all I threw all weekend! I also owe the win to Matt Blakely for finding my disc in the final nine after a second shot on the 7th hole went about 100 feet off the fairway in a death zone!

Nice shooting Brad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The coolest thing about it all is that we get to see you and Paul Jay on the front page for a little while. My first tournament round ever was back in 1996 with Paul Jay at Knob Hill. That picture is awesome. 2 of my favorite people in the disc golf scene for sure.

................Now someone needs to get Paul down to Paw Paw.

First, I have to give Paul Jay and crew big props for picking up the tournament duties full-time and not missing a beat.

Way to go Schick Stick, way to represent the home turf brother!

And, I guess since no one else wants to I'll proudly boast about Des Reading's play in the Final 9.

--Best Overall Score with Schick after he took a three for the win on the last hole #18. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
--Incredible Dam shot on a rope that landed 40 ft passed the basket
--Only player to take a four on the Monster Hole from #7 tee to #8 basket. :D

That's Five BHMO's in a row for that gal!

The only thing that sucked at this tourney was the weather and my level of play for the 1st 2 rounds! Kudos to Paul and the Columbus crew for pulling off a great tourney. I still love the BHMDGC. It's one of the best I've ever played. As far as ratings go, I'm glad I walked away with at least one round above my rating. Thanks Paul, Columbus is always a treat.
