I proudly announce that DISC GOLF has been added as an OFFICIAL Sooner State Games competition. For those of you who are unaware of the SSG, it is our STATE OLYMPICS. IT IS AN AMATEUR ONLY EVENT. It is held in the Summer and Winter, disc golf will be involved in BOTH sessions.
The Sooner State Games is a qualifier for the AMERICA Games to be held in Colorado Springs, Colorado. A gold Medal in Disc Golf qualifies you to go to represent OKLAHOMA at the A-games. The SSG is governed by the OKLAHOMA ALL SPORTS ASSOCIATION, a state run entity.
The SUMMER GAMES will be held in OKC on Saturday June 7th at Dolese Youth Park and Will Rogers Park.
The WINTER GAMES will be held in TULSA date TBA.
This is a good connection to make for obvious reasons... a few are.
AWARENESS STATEWIDE about the advantages and pleaseure disc golf can bring a community.
Mass Mailing of a description of and where to Disc Golf in Oklahoma to all OKLAHOMA residences.
Additional events on the calendar with MEDIA coverage.

Who can take the time off needed to make the trip, afford the $230.00 entry and the $$$ it takes to get and survive there for 5 days? WHO really WANTS to go??? After talking with Kev and looking at the history, the person that "wins" it usually can't go at the last minute for various reasons and the spot ends up thrown to someone at the last minute.

With Hotel, entry, souveniers, meals, drinks, rocs and misc. you will need to prepare for about $1,500 to $2,000. I know, I even shared a room and it cost me between those two numbers. :o:p

A competition would be the fairest way to decide it.
Not everyone reads the board, so deciding it here is probably not the best way.
I think it should go to a person who competes in the Pro division...

Tiger Woods caddie probably makes more than all of us.

I know Jose has an interest in the spot...
jose
Mar 12 2008, 06:18 PM
I do have an interest in the spot if we are playing for it but I do not want to be picked as the state rep since there are so many other people that deserve to go. I know other people that have wanted to go to USDGC from Oklahoma for several years and have tried to earn a spot at qualifiers in the Open division. One of them is a current administrator.
I am going to try to go as a qualifier this year. I took a year off from USDGC last year just because of the new job and such. I think there are several people that have never been that should get the knod before I do.
I agree with Joe on the fact that it has all too often been decided at the last minute. I would like to see someone commit to it early. It is one of those things that you know you can go or you don't. You have the money or you don't. It is expensive.
I have in the past had a strong opinion that it should be played for on the course but Joe brings up a good point that most people that have earned it have not taken the opportunity. So, picking someone and pinning them down about the October trip in say June or July at the latest would be a good idea.
How to pick? IMHO - someone who has never gone before, someone who has shown that they want to go to USDGC by trying to qualify in the past.
sschumacher
Mar 12 2008, 06:28 PM
I vote for Chris Hicks. I don't know if he wants to go or could afford it but he's respectable and looks like he would pay his caddie well and not throw a temper tantrum on the course like Twoput. :D

I think now that I have Furdog's endorsement that it is inevitable that I will go to the USDGC. It's like the Godfather of Disc Golf has given me his blessing.
But if I was going to put my two cents in as a far as a fair way, to send someone off to the USDGC as a representative of Oklahoma, I think would be to have a state's championship and have the highest placed player by score on the same course (advanced or pro) that wants to go to USDGC and will pay (preferably half the entry fee and the qualifying tournament entry fees or clubs would pay for the other half of the entry fee). If the player does not pay his half by a certain period then the next person would get their chance and so on.
And they would be forced to know all the lyrics from Smack That by Akon "I feel you creepin', I can see you from my shadow.
Wanna jump up in my Lamborghini Gallardo.
Maybe go to my place and just kick it, like Taebo."

This the problem they have been talking about Cris.
The winner always seems to not be able to go and second and third and so forth. That is exactly how Conners got the spot last year. Notifcation had to be given and time was running out. It was use it or lose it.
The questions are, can the player take off from work that long, can he financially afford it,is he a good representative?
I think being a good representative would be a top requirement. Meaning, plays tournaments, has a respectable rating or tournament finishes and reflectsgood sportsmanship.
I'm not sure there is a best way to award it.
Maybe lottery draw.
And why should it be the Tulsa club footing half of the entry?
Twisted1
Mar 14 2008, 07:09 AM
He's referring to our neighbors the ARKIES. They have a 8 or 9 stop series where players compete for the spot with points. 30% of all event $$$ is put in a fund to give the winner. Last year it was enough to pay Ganzels entry, flight and hotel. That method eliminates the "I can't afford it" but not the " I can't make it".
It has been awarded at past OK Championships (aka the Norman Open)but according to Kev that spot usually went unused, the last winner to use it was Jared Pennington.
Thanks for your comments and thoughts. Winners entry must be paid by August 1st... Hotel Room's are already running low.
Twisted1
Mar 14 2008, 07:29 AM
Another thought to ponder is Oklahoma has 2 spots this year... The State Spot... and under USDGC policy "2008 regional qualifier event directors" (GTO) get a spot as well. So if Wayne can't commit to go then he has a spot to jockey as well.
The only Oklahoman qualified so far is Coda.

correction, last year it was 5%, not 30%
this year it's $1 per player in the tourney
and it's actually strokes, not points, with unmade events counting at par +10 strokes per round..........
top 8 players play 1 round, starting at even, the winner of that 1 round wins (perform when it counts)
it definitely helps to defray the cost and the winner absolutely agrees to go by accepting
if the winner doesn't go we send him to Oklahoma back country to squeal like a pig :D

OK guys, Here comes my two cents worth. When our kids were in high school, Debbie and I started a scholarship fund and it was funded in great part each year by a charity auction. There are a lot of good people out there that will attend a charity event and give generously for a good cause. I am seeing a lot of interest by local citizens in what we are trying to do out here at the lodge. I think this could be a great way to generate significant dollars for the cause. Typically, Deb and I would canvas the town (and surrounding towns) and solicit donations for the auction. Once we got a beautiful squash blossom necklace donated. The donor showed up for the auction, bo't it back, then re-donated it again and it was auctioned off again. This one item generated over TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS. We never raised less than $4000 at one of these auctions. For those of you who do not get here very often, we are building a clubhouse/sports bar and grill on the property. We hope to have it operable by the May 10th event. If a team can be assembled, we can host a charity auction at each Lodge event and the money from the auctions would go back into the general fund. This money could then be used as assurance that any golfer that wanted to go to the USDGC would have adequate funds for expenses. Any additional monies that are raised I would like to see a fund established that members of TDSA could request membership fees be paid out of on an annual basis. Since I am just sitting here brainstorming with my own self, I would appreciate feedback.

My fellow Oklahomans this post is notice that I will NOT be running for a third term as the State Coordinator for the PDGA. Over the past 4 years I have enjoyed serving / volunteering alongside the PDGA and the entire OKLAHOMA disc golf community. I feel that my time was well spent promoting disc golf across our great State. During my tour we made the schedule electronic, added disc golf to the Sooner State Summer & Winter Games and added a few courses. I also spent hundreds of hours attending Parks & Recreation Department meetings, City Council meetings and an equal amount of time repeatidly calling on numerous communities to embrace disc golf. I had Oklahoma disc golf featured on the news, in numerous magazines and newspapers.
I now feel it is time to move in a different direction with my promotion of the sport. Over the past few years I have spent more time and money volunteering, donating and helping others than I have on my personal goals for my performance and the development of the sport. It is my intention to get back to projects such as Twisted Flyer, The EDGE foundation and the USDGC. I will also continue to work with some of the best events and people in the sport today. I will also continue to prove to the world that we are NOT just a bunch of OKIES. We are consumate professionals and promoters of our sport, our golfers and our State.
It is with great respect and pride I offer my official endoresment for the next State Coordinator candidate Mr. Michael Treat. I base this not on our friendship, I base it on Mikes years of hard work, sacrifice and compassion at promoting the sport. I believe his unbiased approach and brutal honesty will continue to foster the vision of many past State Coordinators. The job is thankless and is never easy and usually comes with great personal expense. I feel that Mikes previous work ethic and experience will be the best bet for Oklahoma Disc Golf. I will be honored to assist Mike in the transition and be available throughout his term to assist if necessary. Please join me in supporting the future of Oklahoma Disc Golf by electing Mike Treat in this election.
Once again... in a world where most people talk about doing, but never do, I was proud to DO for you.

Thanks Joe for all your hard work as our state coordinator! You have really kept Oklahoma disc golf up and running as well as connected to the national scene.
I also feel that Mike Treat would be a good successor to the job of state coordinator. In Mike's (relitively) short time of being involved in disc golf he has thrown himself into everything he does whole heartedly and supplied us (with the help of his sons) with some great tournaments in Oklahoma. Plus I can tell you from his participation with TDSA that he has often been the voice of reason and solutions to some of our disc golf issues and discussions.
