So I see the PDGA has released whom is invited to Pro Worlds. For the 1st time in 20 years I did not qualify.
I only played 5 PDGA events in 2007, 16th at Worlds (MPM) and won a A Tier event. Is that not enough???
Why should I renew my membership? Maybe there needs some revisions so the BEST players play Worlds, not those who played the MOST. Any logical answers will be accepted. Please do not tell me it will not fill and just wait. That is not what I'm looking for. Perhaps some wisdom from the Tour Manager? Mr. Gentry?

Well I will say that I agree with you and the points system is bad at best.
It probably doesn't help that two of your 5 events were majors which didn't have points.

Since anyone can get into Pro Worlds off the waiting list, the points system and Worlds invites are almost entirely meaningless, imo.
Although I do realize that actually being invited to Pro Worlds may mean all the difference in the world to some people, and this is not the answer you were looking for.

My "logical" answer is that you knew that this was the format for invitations. It was not a surprise. Playing in Majors like the Worlds do not garnish you points. It was not hard to figure out if you were going to get an invite or not. Maybe not to people that play the most, but expecting to get in with 4 events played should not be a surprise. I knew that I was not going to qualify MONTHS ago.
Yeah, if you get on it the first day to register, I would not think that it should be a problem to be able to play.

PDGA made a good choice for once. Unlike the new division structure that makes it easy for events to fill with more than half the players in the INT and Rec divisions. Oh and the event filled two weeks in ADV.
So why did we need more divisions if we had no problem filling events in the 1st place? LOL PDGA

Question. Worlds invites are based off the previous year tour points, correct?
If I play AM in 2008 (my 1st full year as a PDGA member), but move to Pro in 2009, would I be eligible for AM Worlds?
(OK, i guess it was 2 questions)

No, once you turn Pro you can't play AMs unless your rating is low enough. Regardless of your rating if you have cashed in Pro you can't play Majors as an AM. Worlds is a Major so no you couldn't.

The new policy in 2008 allows Ams to enter pro divisions and accept merch instead of cash and retain am status. This could help your situation. You could play Am all year in 2008 and play pro in 2009 up to Am Worlds and still be allowed to play in it as long as you didn't accept any cash (just merch) when you entered a pro division and ended up in the cash positions.

You would think I might get an invite for Worlds this year after being TD in 2007. Nope. Not enough points. Doesn't bother me though since the PDGA stopped sending out the nice looking invites by mail versus the cost-saving emails used now, that is unless you don't have an email address. Then you'll still get a mailing of B&W printed docs. When I first got in the sport, the invites were printed on heavy stock nice looking paper like award certificates. It was an honor and worth saving the nicely printed invite card even if you couldn't go. I'm sure I could get in after the waiting period but will probably work rather than play.

Chuck,
When I was involved a few years ago with groups wanting to host a WDGC, I thought that the BOD asked the group to send a least one person from the host group to the WDGC previous to and after the one that they were hosting. Did anyone from your host group go to Augusta in 06, and did anyone from Augusta go to WI last year? And is anyone from WI going to this year's event to assist?

I was the scorekeeper at Augusta and Tulsa so I would guess that qualifies, let alone doing that for several other Worlds prior to that. Larry Labond played in Worlds last summer but no one from the Kalamazoo team helped or was an inside observer and I'm not sure any helped at Milwaukee. I think now that several PDGA staff and marshals experienced with big events are part of the core Worlds teams each year, the tradition you are talking about has been relaxed whether right or wrong. If the local team has people who have run A-tier or NTs over the years like KC who has also hosted Am Worlds, then the feeling is they have enough experience. In the case of Virginia Beach who wanted to host a Worlds, we suggested they build up some local experience first and run some A-tiers which they have started to do in hopes for hosting a higher level event in the future.

That's sort of a tradition that we and Des Moines started back in 2003. Becky Zallek worked on our staff at Am Worlds 2003 in order to get some experience helping at a big event, since Des Moines had really only run B-Tiers up until that point. She then really raised the bar higher the next year in Des Moines. She then suggested that John Duesler and Jim Davis help out at DSM in 2004, since Allentown hadn't really run an event of that size, either. Kevin McCoy was in Flagstaff in 2005, Terry Miller was helping at Tulsa in 2006. Chuck has been in the scoring room before at Worlds (more than once) and of course, was TD last year for PW. I don't believe anyone on the Kalamazoo staff was on staff for either Worlds last year, but I could be wrong. We KCers have not yet been asked to help out at Kalamazoo this year (although I think Jack might marshal), but we will be there as players anyway, plus we've already run 2 Am Worlds and a slew of NT/A-Tiers. I don't see it necessarily as a requirement...it worked for us and DSM in 2003 and 2004 because we're only 200 miles apart, and we (KCFDC) attend a lot of their events and vice versa.
There has been course reviews for the last few Worlds. It really started as a review for a Virginia Beach bid for Pro Worlds (as Chuck already stated). Our KC 2009 bid was approved without a course review, but that's because darn near all of our courses have stood the test of time and have had multiple Am Worlds and NTs played on them. That being said, we're still going to have perhaps John Houck look at Blue Valley and offer some suggestions, and Chuck might come down for the Wide Open and offer some suggestions. (Chuck, I'm not sure if we've talked to you formally about that, but I think we could probably use the input, especially at BV)

Jack and I talked about me coming by sometime when we were at the Mid-Nats last September.
I went to Ohio last May to review courses for Am Worlds 2010 and they're making great strides with improvements to the five courses planned, especially in getting cement tee pads. I stopped by and saw two of them again during Christmas holidays.

i miss the nice invites too. the way they do it now renders it even less meaningful than it really is. i still have all of the hard copy invitations i received over the years. i actually qualified this year for the first time in several, probably due to hysell's injury.

Same with me - I received one of those in 2002 when I last competed as an amateur. I had no intentions of going to Am Nationals, but the certificate was still nice.
If I hadn't been invited but wanted to participate by getting in off the waiting list, it wouldn't have fazed me. I honestly don't see what the big deal is.

As certificates are nice, there are always the monetary considerations. Imagine you send out for a combined worlds 1200 invites, printed on cert paper, full color, envelopes to keep them nice, accompanying informational material, and extra postage for the larger package...that can really cut into the already tight budget. I realize that some would say that we should be allocating for this, but this only lends from someother aspect of event funding.

I'm a little surprised that my 368 points didn't get me an invite this year. I believe it would have last year. I think the only way I'll ever get to go is if I get this official looking invitation in the mail...things like these impress wives, waiting lists don't.
