We strongly encourage pre-registration, but we will accept walk-ups. If we hit 270 WE WILL TURN PEOPLE AWAY.
Tulsa did lose out on some by having an early cut-off, but in their defense, and the reason we are closing pre-registration early, is that you have to allow time for the mail-in registrations make their way in as well as the check from the online registration host. Most Clubs need all entry fees in so they can take care of payouts and expenses. Very few clubs have the resources to cover these costs before all the money is in.
Bottom line ALL should play the 2008 Challenge as it will be one not to miss!!!!!!!

I am coming in on Friday with one or two others from St Louis. We have never seen your courses so this tournament will be our first exposure to Des Moines disc golf. Does anyone have a place for us to stay while we are in town? We will have sleeping bags and can bring tents, if need be. However, a shower in the evening after the rounds would be a plus. I hosted eight players from out of town for the St Louis Open. It was my first time opening my home to discers and I loved every minute of it. I even won my division. I think it was the karma. I got to say. I have always felt blessed with some of the best courses in the nation here in Des Moines. After the course work put in the last couple of months I can only take a step back and realise it's more than a blessing, it's a dream come true.
On top of the added cash, players packs, large field, players parties, and world class players, you're getting to play on some of the best course there is to offer in the best shape they have ever been.
Des Moines is definately the place to be this weekend. The only way this could get any better is if it lasted longer.
With out a doubt this will be one of the top A tiers of the year, fortunately for me, it's right in my back yard :D

What a weekend. I just want to take a second and say thanks to all the players and spectators that came out this weekend and made this happen.
I had a great time from the get go. It was good to see a lot of friends from all over back in town.
Next I want to give a shout out to First Class Credit Union. None of this would of came about without the partnership that we share. I'm already looking forward to next year, MAKING IT BIGGER AND BETTER. That was the best news of the weekend.
What about that players party. We gave everything away that we could with games from a mini putt off giving away the mini basket to a raffle and even sticking a disc in a box and trying to figure out what it was, by the way nobody got it. Felix and Oscars is already looking forward to next year also and so are we. What a draw give away a basket and everybody shows. By the way thanks to Adam Olsen for giving away a STACK of plastic to the ams at the distance show!!
Great shooting by Avery this weekend. He was the only Open player to end up under par. He was up for the Challenge. How about Angela shooting a 59 at Pickard wow. We had a lot of local players tearing it up out there this weekend also, Duden bringing in a -1 at Pickard and Kyle Schultz moving up for his Pro debut and hangin with the big boys. Oh and we can't forget Eddie McCulley bringing home the win in the Old Man division, TEAM PROFLIGHT!!
Oh by the way how cool is this, Barry Schultz stuck around and was out helping us tear down banners and such. Now that is a first class champ!!!

I talked to most of the Gateway guys who played the event and they all had nothing but great things to say about the courses. ( and the payout wasn't too shabby either)
I do have a question about this comment:
"Great shooting by Avery this weekend. He was the only Open player to end up under par. He was up for the Challenge"
I am not sure who is responsible for deciding what par is for your courses, but with all the par 4's on your courses, its obvious the course pars are not really 54.
According to Justin Bunnell, Ewing was a 61, what were the actual pars for the other courses and is there a reason you guys are not using the actual par of the holes and courses for the event par?
I know the old "every things a par 54" works great for guys who cant or don't want to try and figure out what par really is, but I was under the impression we were passed that old school thought process.
Believe it or not, establishing the true par is rather important to the game, not to mention it's highly beneficial to the psychology of the up and coming players if they don't think they are 36 over, when they are actually only 12-16
,,,,,,LOOKING for PAR!

I checked the Worlds file for 2004 and Pickard was listed as par 57 with Ewing and Walnut at 56 and Big Creek at 54. However, the par scoring (called WCP then) was done using estimated SSAs at the time and not pars. So each of these courses likely have pars higher than those Worlds values.

This years Challenge was Awesome! All 4 courses were in GREAT condition, players party was a blast with over 100 attending, the DSM crew ran things efficiently and affectively, and I heard so many positive things about this years Challenge. Props to all that helped, TD's Joe Wiley and Corey Philips, Shane Stewart, Eddie McCulley, and the Actons.
Par on the courses I think goes like this:
Pickard-63
Big Creek-61
Ewing-62
Walnut-60

If I was to classify the course pars for the weekend, I would go with the following:

Big Creek: 59

Actually I agree with you Dave. You won't find any argument here. A lot of the guys shot very good here this weekend. I was just making a statement from the PDGA tour site where it shows 1 guy at -1. I understand and fully support your theory, I'm also to worn out right now to care what par is.
By the way the discs came out great and I appreciate you getting me those so quick. Thanks!!!!!

Hey Shane not picking on you, just feel everyone should be using actual par as we strive to get away from "everything a par 3" perception.
so it look is like Avery must have been around -31 or -32.
would you say your courses were mostly in the long pin placements or is there still room to increase the par?
Chuck,,,,I have a question for you, but it is detailed I will probably call.
