Hello All, Just so everyone know we attend to open up online registration on April 1 (NO JOKE). Over the past several yeers' we have used mollyguard/eventbrite to register players online. At the beginning of this year they increased their fees close to 15%. With that said we have started to create our owe online e-cart. I am hoping to have this site up soon so all of you can start planning the menus and what all you need to bring.

Quick question of etiquette -- would love feedback:

I played some great golf and won the WVAm Championship last year. I would love to go back and play again this year -- it is one of the most fun tournaments I've ever been to, and by all PDGA rules I'm totally eligible (still an Am, below a 970 rating, have never accepted cash, etc...)

I don't want to move up to Pro until I get a chance to compete in Am Worlds, but that hasn't happened yet.

I did play in the WVOpen Championships last year and got my butt kicked (came in 43rd) -- though I shot exactly the same total score as I did in the Am event.

I looked back through past scores, and the score I won with last year (203+finals) was the highest score ever to win Advanced... the WVO has taken place five years, and in the other years I would have placed anywhere from 3rd to 7th with that score. Winners were usually 6-8 strokes better than I shot. And we had perfect weather last year, so I know that wasn't a consideration.

All that said, I don't want to play Advanced again if it will offend/p*ss-off/etc... the disc golf community up here. I love PawPaw and want to play out there any chance I can -- so my hope is to play both WV tourneys this year just for the course, the people, the beauty of the place, and the hospitality of Spencer and Gabi.

So thoughts on whether or not it is in bad taste to play this year after winning last year? I value the community of disc golfers more than I value the technical rules that I know allow me to play. But if it's socially acceptable to play again, I can't wait to get out PawPaw.

Thanks all.

I got called a bagger for rolling in intermediate with a 845 rating last weeekend.
that was all in good fun and in a joking manner, and if its not, then those peeps claiming bagging are just a-holes in general. Rating cutoffs are there for a reason, as cutoffs.

so, with that said Tim, you should play dood... defend that title. tourneys are for exactly what you mentioned... fun, friends, and the joys that come with competitive disc golf. who cares what everyone else thinks?!? Socially acceptable is you WANTING to go to Paw Paw because you have a blast there. Are you going to ask this question again next year when your rating is 979? NO, because you wont be able to play PawPaw Am then and miss a tourney you clearly care about.

I totally disagree with the rating cutoffs but thats for another thread. You are able to play now by all accounts, technical and other. Sign up and defend that title. thats my $.02

move up, bagger!

play the open.
so what if you cash. you can take merch i think.
so what if you don't cash. is the event not worth the entry even if $$$ weren't there to be won?

since it is pro only, there will be plenty of mullets playing up to keep you competitive even if you don't shoot lights out and cash.

fwiw, i won advanced at the june event back when it was pro/am. i didn't shoot that well, but good enough to win. i've played open at paw paw ever since. i've gotten destroyed every time but i have no regrets (only a bunch of excuses /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif ). i'll have a decent showing there again sooner or later. hopefully before i'm eligible for the old man division. when that decent showing happens, i certainly don't want it to be in the bagger division.

BTW I'm playing the Open but also plan to register for the am event as an advanced master, do I have your blessing on that? :p

tiltedhalo
May 08 2008, 04:10 PM
To clarify: If both events were the same weekend, I would definitely sign up for Pro. As it is, since they are several months apart, I'm hoping to play both events. I'm not so much concerned about winning or losing -- I just want the chance to play two competitive PDGA events at one of the greatest courses in the nation.

PawPaw is just one of those places that is good for the soul -- its two great courses, but more than that it is a place where the Milky Way is blinding, and road noise, airplanes, etc... are lost in the distance and the tranquility of a summer night is a balm for any frustration.

I really can't imagine not loving being out there -- my first round ever at PawPaw was last June -- my first PDGA tourney in more than 4 years -- I started the event with a triple putt 4, a 6, a 5, a 6, and I don't remember from there. Nine strokes up in four holes is a humbling way to start back after a long hiatus from disc golf -- but its such an amazing place it is impossible to get upset.

A bad round at PawPaw is more fun than a great round almost anywhere else.

Even if you don't play in the tourney Tim, come on up. I'll be up from probably Thursday through the weekend and I'll probably be needing someone to battle in between caddying for the monk.

cefire,
Right now I'm thinking I'll just sign up and if I start playing too well, a couple of cold ones between rounds should fix that. And I don't mind playing 100+ holes in a day, so I'll be glad to keep you on your toes -- I think PawPaw would be a perfect place for a battle. I'm just hoping to get some time to play between now and then.

Between travel, moving, and injury, I haven't thrown a disc in more than a month... doesn't feel like spring/summer without a disc in hand. Which is a great reason to be at PawPaw -- no distractions from the discs. :-)

Jun 23 2008, 06:10 PM
Quick summary of a great WV Am weekend: low turnout was surprising (shocking, really) for a stunningly beautiful West Virginia weekend.

best round shot on the Woodshed -- three scores came in at 65 first round (Devin Deebo, Will Bach (the Otto), and ?); three scores came in at 66 in the third round (slightly harder layout -- Kevin Clark, Tim Haynes, Doug Markovich (spelling?)
best round shot on the Whipping Post -- a 65 by Doug...

Best tournament total prior to the finals was 70, 67, 66 for a total of 203, shot by Doug (who -- along with two other guys -- took a two stroke penalty in the first round when his card played the course out of order).

Kevin (Pinky) Clark wins men's advanced in a close final 9, taking a birdie 3 after a double-bankshot off the barn and a power-meter to park WS18 (second to last playoff hole) to move a stroke ahead from what had been a three way tie for the lead (Kevin, Tim, Doug). Great shooting, Kevin. He made the highlight reel throughout the finals by outdriving the rest of us by 150'+ on Tony's Valley (WP14), and similarly impressive distances on several other holes -- Pinky's got a cannon.

Sheila Teves wins women's advanced by a comfortable margin over Sandal in a small division.

Not sure about the Intermediate winner -- not a player I know.

Huge, huge thanks goes first and foremost to Spencer and Gabi for the most fun place I know of to spend a disc golf weekend; and to Tony Ellis for running the tournament; and to Mark Susi for emceeing and making the sweetest trophies for any tournament in disc golf, Larry for spotting, and countless folks who got the courses and the tournament in the shape it is today.

I had a great time getting to know some new folks and playing with some great guys -- Pinky, Doug, Will, Deebo, Nick, Konrad, and others...

now I'm looking forward to the WVOpen later this year -- the BEST Tourney of the year, so get out there and get all your friends to sign up. Any chance to play PawPaw is not to be missed.

Great shooting on both courses. That is probably a 1050-rated front nine. I'm surprised you saw a lot of ticks. When I was out there a few weeks ago, I only found one the whole weekend.

Anyway, I'm hoping to keep this thread near the top -- I don't know who all is signed up already, but this is on the short list of best tournaments I know of, so I'm encouraging everyone who can drive/fly/bike/walk/crawl to West Virginia to get out there. You will find no more hospitable place or fun weekend than the WVO. It's one of the most pristine and beautiful places I know of to camp and is a weekend that is simply good for the soul.

I know it's pro only, but if you are an Am, come on out and play up -- I did it last year and got to play on cards with some of the top touring pros as well as some great local pros. And the relaxed time with friends -- old and new -- from all over is just awesome.

If you have any questions about the courses, event, travel, lodging, etc... don't hesitate to ask.

Hope to see you there.

My understanding is that it alternates, and I know Masters played The Whipping Post twice last year, so yes -- it will be the Woodshed this year.

So if you're on the fence between the open and master's division for signup, just pick the course you want to play twice and sign up that way.

OK folks. Tourney is less than four weeks away and is barely half full. Some people are holding out and need to make plans now.

The most fun tourney in the country (ask anyone who's played), and it's not sold out. Pure insanity. So if you're on the fence, visit the site, read the history, read the comments in this thread, and realize you are supposed to be there. See you in WV.

Whoop! registration is up 12 people since I posted yesterday, eight of those in MPO. Let's see that curve keep climbing! Eight-eight players in as of this post.

Which means there are still ~11,900 PDGA members still undecided about attending the best event of the year. :(

I haven't posted on here for sooo long, my user names and PW's don't seem to work anymore....so I have to live vicariously through the key board of Nude golfer.

Sorry Tony, not the same one. This one had a female's name and number on it. One of the Paw Paw regulars recognized the name and promised to get it back to her. All other found discs were turned in to the lost and found. Sara remembers finding a few that said "Mine," and when she'd come up with a disc and everyone asked whose it was, she read the name. In keeping with the general Paw Paw mentality (we will punish you early and often and then some) it was kinda nice having everyone over par. Why not? If we can pretend that -100 is legitimate then why not have +100??

I think both courses are par 59. True par4s: WS--2,3,9,15,18 WP--2,6,9,12,14 Everyone thing else is deucable including about 5 on each course that only big arms can reach that Biscoe refers to as tweeners. I don't think there are any par 5s except maybe WP6 which is probably reachable in two by the big arms. It's no wonder Markus won. I'd like to see he and Mose's scorecard.

And define deucable. My definition of deucable is that a top player could drive within 40 feet of the pin. How many players do you think drove within 40' of WP 3,4,11? How about WS 1(2nd rd),6(in the long pos.) or 13? WS 4 is a par 4 for the high frequency of OB strokes, and WS 3 is definitely par 5 a 4 is a birdie and a 3 is an eagle.

gotcha
Sep 03 2008, 10:58 AM
I think both courses are par 59. True par4s: WS--2,3,9,15,18 WP--2,6,9,12,14 Everyone thing else is deucable including about 5 on each course that only big arms can reach that Biscoe refers to as tweeners. I don't think there are any par 5s except maybe WP6 which is probably reachable in two by the big arms.

Hole 14 on the Whippin' Post was deuced by two different players this year, thus, the hole is deucable. Whorley, you might want to adjust your WP par down to 58.

Just b/c a hole is dueced doesn't make it a par 3.

I've aced a hole before. That must be a par 2.

ws1- par 4 in long due to forced layup- second shot is 200 or so to a 15 foot deep landing area- how is that not a par 4?

ws2- par 4

ws3- par 5 due to tightness/length- there was one 4 in my 2 groups playing it this weekend- second time through was with 3 guys rated 990+

ws4- par 4 due to tightness/ob- super happy 3

ws6- par 4 in long- takes 2 solid shots to putt on it

ws9- par 4 (although james conrad overdrove it by 10 feet saturday)

ws 13- easy par 4

ws 15- hard par 4

ws 18- par 4

for a total of 64

wp2- par 5, forced less than full power from tee followed by a full par 4 hole regardless of where your drive lands

wp3- par 4, never seen anyone close to reaching it since they moved the pin back

wp4- easy-ish par 4, takes 2 shots to putt regardless of quality of drive- roddy threw a great roller on it and was still 90 out

wp6- par 4, arguable par 5

wp9- par 4

wp 11- par 4, requires a good drive and a very precise upshot for birdie (even though skinner drove 50 ft past it last weekend)

wp12- par 4

wp13- easy par 4 (i could see calling it a hard par 3 as well)

wp 14- par 4 (2 fairway ace deuces last weekend)

wp 17- easyish par 4 due to low ceiling on drive

for a total of 65

I agree with Biscoe on his assessment of holes at Paw Paw; obviously some are easier than others based on what their par is, but it's basically right. And using fluke shots like James Conrad's parkjob on WS9, or the fact that a mega-arm like Markus could conceivably drive a couple of the par 4s for long 2-putts doesn't invalidate the par.

A perfect 550-600' shot (adjust for elevation) isn't consistent, even for the best mega-arm throwers in the game.

I've seen several eagles on Paw Paw holes (I've even hit a few, including one of the two deuces on WP14 this year), but they always feel like eagles and are virtually impossible to replicate.

I've parked WP2 for the eagle 3 off a great, skipping drive and a sick, sick roller. I've watched two different drives get insanely lucky, lace their way through hundreds of trees, and park (or overshot) WP11 for the eagle 2; on WP13, I've watched a birdie or two, and have personally overshot the hole by 150' on a roller but with that hole, to get a 2, you have to roll and pray and the odds are very, very slim for the eagle 2 and generally require a sick upshot and/or sick 100' putt for the birdie 3 (with this hole, the only way for an eagle 2 is luck; a birdie three requires luck and skill; on skill alone you can count on the 4); WP17 is a four because of the usually blind-approach to a very fast green with a pond behind it.

I could go on, but bottom line is I think John is solid in his analysis of pars for the various holes. The basic rule-of-thumb for the A-Tier WVO has been that in the Open Pro division, averaging 65 across three rounds is pretty much a guarantee to be in the cash, which is pretty crazy for an A-tier with this many high-level players.

For this A-Tier, any pro who shoots par (or even a couple over) will cash; it helps me think they've probably done a pretty good job having a true par and a course that challenges even the best players in the world.

I'd like to add huge props to John Biscoe for shooting 1000-rated golf day one. Awesome shooting.

MTL21676
Sep 04 2008, 11:05 AM
Better yet, why is a non member playing in an A Tier event when not only is that not allowed, but the flyer says something about it.

Why was there at the least $5,580 (62 open at 90 dollars a person going into the purse - and entry was 100 and 120 for late sign ups - this also doesn't account for the minumum $1,000 added required for A Tier) but only $4,998 paid out?

gotcha

I had heard that $20 of every entry was used for "extraneous fees = that means PDGA Player FEES, Sanction FEES, Event Insurance, Green FEES and Dons John FEES"

sandalbagger
Sep 04 2008, 11:35 AM
$20 of all entry fees went to Porta Jons, Gas for the mowers, and I believe some goes to Gabby and Spence as well for letting us use the land. And who really cares, this event is not about the payout.

MTL21676
Sep 04 2008, 11:37 AM
That makes 4960 in entry and 4998 paid out.

Where is the 1000 or least some added cash? Surely this event had added cash.

Sep 04 2008, 11:46 AM
I heard the "extraneous fee" amount of $20 via the grapevine, thus, I have no idea if it is accurate....could be more. I do know competitors are charged for green fees, porto-john fees (much needed) and, of course, the associated PDGA fees.

I do question the accuracy of the payout posted on the PDGA tour page. For example, I won $80 for finishing 17th in the old men's division, however, the payout shows I won $75.

Tony nothing but love and respect, but if things look shady, people will question them.

If you were to simply clarify how your arrived at your numbers, everything will be fine.

During the Tupelo Bay Open last year, someone questionned the payout. Kirk simply posted the numbers and how he arrived at them.

I get kinda tired of people thinking that anytime someone questions anythign about a tournament, the TD's goes on the defense and has the "well why don't you do this" attitude. And also, Schweb pretty much questionned the payout as well. So there is more than 1 person curious.

If you were to post the numbers and the calcuations, I'm sure everything will be fine. However, on the surface things don't look good. I received a call about the numbers Sunday night so this is not just something I came up with.

money shmoney. It's about the experience. The payout was what they had to pay out after all the fees. I'm sure as hell that Tony did not make any money over the last 10 years running this event.

Payout might look a little low, but I'm sure the money all went to the right places.

porta jons, spence & gabby ( don't forget it's $5 a day to play plus $5 a night to camp at Paw Paw, and I'm sure that is taken out of the entry) Gas for mowers so you can actually play the course. Who know what else, but all I know is that..............................

I don't question the numbers cause I know there has to be considerable expenses both in the preparation and in the execution of this event. There is a great deal of acreage here to mow. Because of the many sprawling campgrounds many port -o-johns were needed and let's face it the place is out in the wilderness and the porto john people surely passed on any added expense for the delivery and pick up of said units. There are many more expenses running this event than others run in public parks funded with taxpayer dollars.

I commend Tony, Mark, Spence, Gabbi, Ted and anyone else involved in making this a premier golfing experience. Well done, well done indeed!

Robert,

As a TD yourself, you should know as well as anyone that having your payout questioned publicly is much more inappropriate than doing it privately.

I was there, I heard people questioning the payout. I also know more than most that this event has much higher event costs associated with it than most.

For instance:
I know that before the cost of gas doubled to $4 a gallon - it cost nearly $500 (IN GAS ALONE) to mow the nearly 60 acres of grass on the two courses.
I know that for years - the Thurmans have been putting up with people not paying the minimal $20 camping fee to stay on the property during the event. It wouldn't surprise me if some portion of entry fees went to the inevitable expense of cleanup and trash removal.
I know that Tony lost tons of $$ feeding everybody on Saturday night the last few years - until this year he just couldn't foot the bill.
I know that porta johns cost at least $150 EACH for the weekend (times 4)

These are but a few examples of event costs that don't figure in to most people's thoughts when calculating entry fees in vs purse money out. Only the PDGA has the right to see the details of event finances - that's what the tournament report is for.
You or anyone else calling out a TD (any TD) to "just post your #'s and it'll all be ok" is just plainly out of line. If you as a TD don't understand someone elses finances on the surface - AND ARE THAT CURIOUS ABOUT IT - send the TD a PM and ask. Show a little class and a little courtesy to your fellow TD's and don't question their integrity before doing some legitimate calculations. It's nothing more than you would want for your own efforts. Not every event is held in a park that's free to play in, that cuts the grass and takes out the trash.

MTL21676
Sep 04 2008, 04:26 PM
That is the information I was curious about.

I guess I'm just strange. I WANT people to publically post negative things about my tournament so I know how to improve. In fact at the last tournament I ran I requested that very thing.

But thanks for clearing things up. I was just very very curious as to what was going on. Sounds like everything was great!

However, I completly disagree that only the PDGA should see the details of an events finances when the players are the paying to play. I like to know where my money goes and I don't take ANY offense in someone asking me about mine when I run a tournament and have no problem backing it up because I know I'm not doing anything wrong.

I also think that if tournaments were to post their numbers a lot (including profits made) a lot of shady stuff would stop happening. However, everytime someone brings it up, it as seen as inappropriate or what not. If people didn't question things, we would be British.

Sep 04 2008, 05:01 PM
I figured Wap Wap would be immune to the spate of public negativity that crops up after so many tournaments. I flew a total of 6000 miles, drove about 500 miles, and spent close to $1000 to attend this tournament. Why? Because of the people, the courses and the setting. Spence and Gabby are kind enough to let a hundred or so people descend on their property for a weekend of fun and frolic. Most of us spend the entire weekend doing exactly what we want to do, which is play golf, have fun, listen to music, and relax. There is no other tournament that I know of that compares. The amount of work that Tony and Susi have done over the years is epic. How many weekends spent in preparation? Beautiful wooden trophies that are cherished by all the winners because of the love and care that Susi puts into creating these unique works of art. This tournament goes beyond our sport, it brings together tribes from all over the Northeast and beyond for a weekend celebration of life and friendship. John Gregory hit it on the nose. If you can't be happy throwing pieces of plastic through the trees with your friends, then you are missing out. And if you can't celebrate the joy of Wap Wap and the love and friendship that it encompasses then your compass is awry. DD

do you want to know how much the two all beef(?) patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onion, and sesame seed bun each cost when you go to mcdonalds?

players either receive perceived value or they don't. those who don't are free to complain about it, not return, etc- those who do (in which number i would count the vast majority of wvo players) vote with their $ year after year by returning to particular events.

a player has no more right to examine "the books" at my tournament than you do at mcdonalds. if i don't provide perceived value for your time and money spent you won't return. if i blatantly screw everyone then perhaps they all will not return.

agree 1000% biscoe... if theres shady'ness going on then its on the PDGA to see it and say something.

people can complain/criticize... they'll always be able to do that but to demand to see the books seems a bit extreme. If some TDs want to do it to quiet the complainers then good for them but a tourney's books should not have to be opened up.

I agree with John as well.

I'm having a hard time seeing any rational for this sense of entitlement to see the books.

You pay the fee, you get to participate. If you dig it, cool. If you don't, try something else next time. If you think there's impropriety, there are proper channels for that. For me, this comes under the heading of "Stuff I Let Other People Worry About". It gives me more time to think about "should that tree stay or go?" or "is this a morning rag or an early afternoon rag?" or "is this cheese stinky enough to go with Chimay and crackers?".

Sorry my opinion on par offended people. Wierd. I don't consider Markus a big arm, he's a gorilla arm--he doesn't count. I consider big arms the longer throwing 50% of pros. I don't consider "deucable" a par three--throw ins from 70+ feet isn't a putt. I consider par 3s are a hole that most pros can get within 50 feet with a good drive. Most pros with today's high speed discs can reach WS--1,4,6,7,11,13,17 WP--4,8,10,11,17. I din't know that they lengthened WP3. Maybe the gauntlet is a par 5. I round down on tweener holes.
