This is one of the most fun tournaments in Texas, not to mention that it's held at a time of year, when East Texas is an awesome place to be. With everyone who has run it in the past gone, will anyone pick it up and run with it?
Think Maceman might..............

ooooo... I just noticed that this is the same weekend as the Third Coast Challenge in Corpus. TCC is already on the tour calender and this is not. I hope this works out for everyone. If not, there's nothing scheduled in Texas on May 3-4 except a one day C tier in Harlingen (just above Brownsville)

change the date, its going to be hard to compete against an A-tier at the beach.

Feb 14 2008, 12:48 PM
Actually, TCC shows on the calender to be a "B" tier, but I know both are favorites of a lot of players. Distance wise, I think it would be a toss-up for the Austin-Round Rock bunch. The beach is great and East Texas if beautiful in the spring. Especially in these parks.

Hey, Nac Crushers, since you're up there, you probably know the place... As you're headed from Pioneer to Pecan, there's a little bbq place on the left, I think, just past Brookshire Bros. A couple years ago, they were getting flooded with disc golfers and were the most courteous people. I asked them if they'd be willing to sponsor the next year and I gave their card to John "Gimp" Edwards, but he ended up not running it last year. You might want to go hit them up.

Hi guys, My name is Grayson Middlebrook, director of finance and records for Nacogdoches Crushers, I guess I'm the only one in our club that is on the boards, I usually post at discgolfreview.com. but I'll try to keep you guys updated with how the tourney is coming along.
We are finally listed on the PDGA schedule, and pre-registration will be open soon at titledisc.com . I saw that titledisc just put the listing up, but we're not yet able to sign up. should be workin soon.
We should be doing an informal doubles round on friday before the tourney at 5pm, any suggestions for how this should go would be appriciated. then the tourney will be run by Craig Lewis, our club president. We're gathering sponsers as we speak, getting the t-shirts made (done) and trying to figure out the tourney plastic situation. We've sent out sponsor mailers this week, and knockin on doors to get additional sponsers. We will also have skins after the sunday round, with the top open finishers, as well as a raffle drawing to get a chance to play in the skins. We're open to format suggestions for the skins round.
Any other questions/suggestions/concerns you guys have, I'll try to get them answered ASAP.

Hi Grayson. I want to thank you guys for picking this up. It would be a shame to let it die. This is one of my favorite tournaments because of the courses and atmosphere. I hope you'll consider putting together a Saturday night party somewhere like in the old days. In case you didn't see it, I posted above what might be a good sponsor lead.
As for advice on running things and on plastic, don't be shy about contacting some seasoned TDs. They will be happy to help you. Vinnie Miller, Gordon Maxim-Kelly & Mitch and Patty Justice (Team Justice) come to mind. As a matter of fact, one important thing you should ask about (if this is your first tournament) is how to take care of the pros. I would bet that if any of them read this, you'll be getting some ideas. :)
Thanks again,

Let me know, Harry. Same deal. I don't know if there's a Texas Road House in Nac, though. :)

Mar 06 2008, 02:38 PM
we most definatly didn't wanna see the tourney die either, when i saw there was no one running the PPO, i contacted Gary Duke for info, and he was super helpful getting us set up for sanctioning and getting our feet off the ground. That was very much appriciated! I attended the first few PPOs back when it was just the DGA cup (or that's what was on the shirts anyway). I went away for a few years, come back last year looking forward to being involved only to see that we had no TD! The club plans on running it from here on out, so hopefully the continuity will help us grow back the tourney to when we were getting 100+ players.
There will most definatly be a saturday night players party. El Ranchero (aka Rancho Grande) is high on the list because of the free margaritas, as well as chili's, szchuan's, casa thomas, and others, that will be discussed tonight.. I also let the guys know about how popular the BBQ house was in years past, and we're hoping to get sponsorship and maybe coupons in the player packages to there. we'll see on that...
No Texas Road House here, unfortunatly...
My brother (club vice-prez) is lookin into getting a hotel deal for players, i'll have more news on that later... not much camping in the area, but if your having trouble finding lodging at a good rate, PM me and i'll see if i can help..
please do fill me in on any and all suggestions.. we are a little new to this, and we want to provide the best experience for all, about the biggest thing we've ran so far is our ice bowl,, the tyler guys (especially Mr Jerry Power) have been extremely helpful as well in giving us ideas on organization and how to run a tourney smoothly...
One thing i want to get some input on is whether people want tshirts included in the players package or not, i know the open players typically prefer to save that money for payout...
oh and by the way, contrary to the title of this board topic, it's not the 10th annual PPO, this year is the 9th.

I'm guessing that's the case... I know in 99 it was called the DGI Cup (at least that's what it was called on my tshirt).
We had our players meeting tonight. We're gonna try to use Flashback for the player's party. Also, we're looking into LaQuinta as the preferred hotel for the PPO. Plastic should be ordered soon from Discraft and Innova. We're doing skins plus a raffle for others to get a chance to play in skins. Tshirts will be in the players package (gotta do this for our sponsorship appeal).
Do we need to get more certified officials? rt now we only have our TD, and we've got two parks. How do you guys work that out usually?

Yes, you need AT LEAST one official per course. Someone needs to be there who can make a ruling.

Ok, from what Craig Lewis our TD and club president told me yesterday, the open players will be getting a tshirt, but at no effect to the pro's purse, The club will be taking on the expense of getting to pros shirts, and the reason behind it is to benifet our sponsers. I know that some of you would prefer us not to do that and just add that much more to the purse, and i tried to speak up for you, but that's what passed in voting. We've got some sponsers lined up, and we're sending more club members out to follow up on the mailers we sent out to potential sponsers. We're also trying to raise money via our minis since turnout has been pretty good lately.
As far as officials go, we've got two officials, one being Craig, and the other being my brother, who will also be playing Advanced. We're looking for at least one more official, particularly one that would be in the other flight, I know Craig has mentioned to me that some of the Tyler guys have their official's certification, but I think that most of those guys are advanced or advanced/pro masters. PM me if you're an official and wouldn't mind being on standby @ the PPO.
Skins will be monster 9s at Pioneer Park (where tourney headquarters will be). 4 top scores, but 4 raffle winners will take part. We're trying to decide whether this should be alternate shot doubles or best shot doubles. Any thoughts on this?
Also, we've got some professional cameramen to film the skins match, and maybe some of the final round on sunday. So if you plan on qualifying for skins/winning the raffle to play in skins, just know that your disc chunkin' skills will be on display on the internet.

Just wanted to let you guys know that we got a message board up and running at our website, so you can discuss the PPO, view info about the tourney and our club, and whatever else you feel like posting. It's at www.naccrushers.com/forum (http://www.naccrushers.com/forum)
As for friday doubles, it will basically be run like our mini, $5 signup, 4-6 pm flex start, and you can go ahead and register there if you haven't already by then at www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com)
Craig put me in charge of lunch for the PPO, and since I suck at grilling, we'll probably get Pizza Hut to set up a booth out there, unless I can find someone in Nac that wants to grill hamburgers for us.
We're getting close to $1000 in sponsership right now, and we'll be making a big sponser push here in the next 2 weeks to hopefully get at least double that. We're also looking into ways to raise money through our minis.
On a nice side note, the city has given us permission to use land by Lake Nacogdoches to build more courses. There should be plenty of land to build 2 courses there, so we're all pretty stoked about that. So maybe at the 10th Annual Pecan Park Open we'll be playing 4 rounds, 4 courses!

matthew: no chance on a date change, we are set to go on April 19-20.
We're getting the courses cleaned up and ready to go, hoping to get some cirlces drawn for the putting greens. We've been doing a lot of work on the teeboxes and drainage systems for the parks, so if it turn out to be a wet weekend, the impact won't be as severe as years past. The drainage system at Pioneer is night and day compared to what it used to be.
One thing I need to mention is a pin location change on Hole #6 at Pioneer Park. It was the 180ft shot with the creek behind it. We had to move it across the creek because of a bridge that was built RIGHT NEXT TO THE BASKET, basically making it unplayable and a little easier since there was a backstop created by the bridge. The basket has been moved to just across the creek, making it about a 220ft shot now. I will try to post pictures ASAP so you can get a feel of what the shot looks like now.
Craig Lewis, our TD and club president has been working his tail off to make these courses in as perfect shape as possible, all while organizing the tourney and getting everything prepared to run his first B-Tier. We all appriciate his hard work, and I know you will too. I know he'll do a great job on the tourney, since he's no n00b to running events: he's ran out minis for several years as well as our first Ice Bowl this year.
Please remember you can pre-register @ www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com) and if you have any questions, don't hesistate to PM me or post them here.

ok, so we're now safely over out $2000.00 sponsorship goal that we set for ourselves plus another $200.00 in disc golf merchandise from local vendors. With more people expressing intrest in sponsoring still, we're very stoked about being finacially secure to provide everyone the best Pecan Park Open possible.
We pretty much "rescued" this tourney three months ago when I found out that no one was running it, and all our affairs are getting in order, the club is getting really excited now that the tourney is just over a week away.
If anyone lives close to Nac and wants to help us prep the parks even more, we're having a work day this Saturday before the mini, and we'll be working pretty much everyday next week painting putting circles, working on teeboxes, picking up trash etc. So if you wanna help out, there's plenty to do and it would be greatly appriciated.

The online rates with the PDGA discount (15%) are around $75 for 2, so $55 for 4 is a pretty good rate.

Apr 12 2008, 12:52 PM
I will check into it today, I spoke with Craig our TD yesterday just to verify that this was the case. He also told me if anyone had a problem with the getting the rate at the hotel to give him a call. His number (936)554-1273
But let me speak with Craig first about it and I'll post back later tonight.
There are other hotels right there by La Quinta as well for anyone intrested. There's a brand new Comfort Suites, Hotel Nacogdoches is not bad, Holiday Inn Express is a little nicer than any of the others in the area but it'll run you around $100.00 a night. In town there there is a Days Inn on north street that is not too far from Pecan Park and is in a good central location for Nac, The Fredonia Hotel has some nice rooms as well as long as you stay in the main part of the hotel.
I will get back to you on La Quinta ASAP.

We'd prefer that people go ahead and sign up with titledisc.com so we can get a feel for how many players will be showing up.
Other Pecan Park news, my brother Ryan Middlebrook, aced hole #2 at pecan in our mini today, taking in a cool $500 cash, which he promply gave right back to the PPO! (he was planning on donating $500 anyway, just worked out kinda nice hitting an ace the week before the tourney!)
Friday doubles @ Pecan Park April 18th

Ok, on the hotel situation, please go to Hotel Nacogdoches, it's where you can get the $54 deal. It used to be a Holiday Inn, so it's pretty decent. Plus it's right by Pioneer Park.
As far as a player's list goes, we are working to get it up ASAP. For the time being you can see a list at www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com), but it does not reflect all those who have signed up with us in person. You can pre-register at titledisc until the day of the event.
The weather is looking to be pretty nice this year. Little rain on thursday and friday, but sunny and cool for saturday and sunday. Pecan Park is especially beautiful this time of year now that everything has just bloomed, though I was enjoying the wide open spaces provided by fallen leaves : P I'm just thankful that I know I'll finish this tourney with most of my plastic in my bag and hopefully won't be shooting in the 60s as I did @ States (awesome event though, just want that ugly first round at King Quail back).

oh ok, makes sense to me. I know I posted it before, but for those who didn't go back and read the earlier threads here's the specs on the skins round:
Format: Alternate shot doubles, monster 9s (should be challenging @ Pioneer, got some killer holes planned)
When: after round four
Where: Pioneer Park
Who gets to play: Top four scores overall automatically qualify, four spots to be raffled and paired with those who already qualified, $1(maybe $2 to up the purse) per raffle ticket, 100% payout from raffle money
our camera man had to cancel for work related reasons, so it won't be filmed as previously mentioned, unless someone has video skills and is willing to do so (pm me if interested, we did have money set aside in our budget for this).
open to comments or suggestions on the skins round.

Apr 16 2008, 12:06 AM
So is all the skins cash coming from the skins or is there a certain amount already set aside?

rt now i don't think there is any money set aside, but if we don't have success selling the raffle tickets i'm sure it'll be sweetened. hopefully ppl will be willing to buy the raffle tickets, should be nice for the pros since they can claim the cash instead of merch. buy several, win at least one hole and you're banking. i know i'm gonna buy several so my awesomely awful skills can be on full display.

My only fear is that initially the raffle tickets will sell slow because the lack of cash but then again a lot of guys just want to play in front of a gallery. :D

well matt, since you've taken such an interest in this, we've decided that we'll take all of your winnings and add that to the raffle money, and that might make a decent pot ;) i just don't know how happy ppl will be since adding last cash from MPO really won't bring the totals up so much. :P
no, we have a goal of $50 per skin, so $450, and you guys are right, it'd probably be difficult to sell that many raffle tickets. I'll bring it up at the meeting tommorow and see what the guys say. But I assure you that the skins rounds will have a respectable pot,

masters can make it in, hell, if rec player shoots one of the top 4 scores overall, by all means they qualify. So top 4 scores overall, plus 4 raffle winners.
Update on the purse for skins: The purse will be $450.00 minimum, no matter how many raffle tickets we sell. The club will make up the difference if $450 worth of raffles are not sold. If more than $450 is sold with the raffle then the purse will go even higher. So basically there is $50 riding on each hole, $25 per player.

Ok, got some pictures of pecan park up, they're basically our tee signs. I don't know if I can get the pics of Pioneer in enough time. Here's the link to Pecan Park Pics, sorry they aren't in order, don't have time to learn photobucket well rt now:
http://s261.photobucket.com/albums/ii70/anarak82/Pecan%20Park%20Open/Pecan%20Park/?albumview=grid
btw the trees turned out a little blue somewhere in the process, so don't worry, that's not water there, just giant pecan trees.
and here's a link to a video that a local student did for a film class that shows pecan park so you can get a little idea of what it looks like on the ground if you've never been there. the video is kinda weird and funny, and he plugged our tourney without us even knowing it (there really aren't many club members in the video, just random casual players)

GPS distances can have errors....sometimes up to 10 meters (33 feet) for each point marked. That could mean errors up to 60 feet per hole counting tee and pin locations. This is more common if you are around trees...such as there are on disc golf courses. Better yet would be a laser rangefinder.
I will be there around mid afternoon....probably around 3pm....I can bring my rangefinder if you want to use it to get accurate measurements. I could help out....and get a guided tour and even get tips from the guide in return... hint hint .

Just a little heads up. Pioneer can be a swamp, however, it is about the driest it has ever been. This is from seeing it weeks back. They are expecting some rain before lunch today, but it is supposed to be sunny all weekend. When I played the course it was in great shape and talking to the TD a couple of days ago, he told me that he had driven his truck into parts of it that years back you would have been lucky to get a buldozer through. So it is solid ground. There are places that are muddy, but overall it should be great.
No rain, plenty of sunshine and a little mud. Are you mice or men/women?!

Actually, Pecan has it's swamp, too. 13's fairway has been nasty every time I've played it, and 12, if you're to far left (which is 13's fairway :D). Maybe a little soggy around 15's basket and pretty nasty between 18s basket and the woods behind it when there's been some rain. I don't recall any other wet spots. On Pioneer, it's 12, 13 & 15 that are usually in the muck. It's nice to hear that it's fairly dry over there right now. It's usually like quick sand.

I'm kinda surprised that Pecan Park was rated a more difficult course to play on day one. That usually is not the case. Pioneer is usually rated a full stroke tougher than Pecan. My -2 @ pecan in round 1 was rated at 965, whereas a -2 @ pioneer would have been 951

My partner and I were the only three on the 2nd hole from 5's tee to hole 6. The next two holes pushed with pretty much everyone being there for a 3. The 5th hole went to Chris and Sudderth after I missed a 40-45ft downhill putt. The last hole going way down the hill to hole 9 was pretty was exciting. I threw a 300ft upshot down the hill about 20ft away and JD stepped up and skipped off the basket from 250ft. Vinnie tossed it up to about 10ft. Jd's partner hit low on a 35fter as did my partner and Neal tapped in for the skin.

I heard you guys all crushed it to the basket on the second skins hole after the ams threw pretty short drives, my bro was telling me that you pinned your second shot by the basket from almost 400ft out. he might have been exagerating though, he told me that JD hit the band on the last hole from 350ft, you said it was more like 200-250.
anyway matt, congrats on the win, i bet it was cool to come from behind and then beat the three time champ in a playoff. glad those magnets worked for you as well, i used them for five years before switching to wizards.

Guess it finally clicked for me why Pecan Park was rated a tougher course than years past: The OBs we set up this year, especially holes 7 (past concrete bridge the creek and beyond was OB) and 14 (the whole "sewer ditch" OB, making it a nice risk reward). We will be playing the course like this from now on, as well as discussing moving hole 18 to lower the risk of an errant disc hitting a kid on the playground.
