This past Saturday gave us great weather to test the new Champ Course. I think there were 30 something players show up to play the demanding lay out. Jerry Harrison from Albuquerque took the top spot with a 2 under (?) 67. I was second with a 69, and the rest spread out from there. Many discs went in the water. The front 9 didn't claim very many, but the back 9 ate up some shots! Good overall feedback, maybe Matt will post some stats soon.

Jroc
Feb 11 2008, 04:52 PM
I'm working with Matt to get those stats compiled. These numbers should give a good indication of the course SSA and average scores.

Only 1 player under par in great weather conditions? Hope we dont get the usual windy day during the Shootout

Not very many out-of-towners for Saturday's round. They missed a good opportunity to see what's in store for May 3 - 4. I think there were around 10 players from Albq. One of them put almost all of his drivers in the water on the back 9 :oI heard 3 discs on 1 hole! OUCH!

I don't know how many more chances we'll get to set it up before the Shootout, but It's deffinately a good idea to at least walk through before trying to play for score! For a personal tour from the designer, contact me and we'll set up a time to check it out.

Course SSA based on Hole Estimator: 69.7
Course SSA based on actual scores: 69.6

More stats later...

More CHAMP course stats.

Heres a snapshot of the scoring spreads. A few holes were a little lopsided, but I think they would spread out more with a bigger sample of scores. Overall, pretty good scoring spread

17 3 32% 47% 12%
18 4 5% 26% 26% 32% 11%

And to think, before the round I was guessing #6 was going to be the hardest (in relation to Par). An Eagle on it by Jerry H. from Albq. is pretty impressive! Also, an Eagle on the Par 5 #2 by Tom Brown (Amarillo) is a very notable effort!

Several holes went without Birdies (#'s 4,8,10,12,14,and 16) :o

No holes went Bogey-free. Possibly because people haven't had the opportunity to get familiar and comfortable with the lay-out yet? The amount of potential OB on many of the holes is intimidating, to say the least.

Hole #10 looks to be the toughest (in relation to Par) with this kind of break-down, but I don't have the score averages with me. I saw them once, but I don't remember too many of them.

And no Birdies on #8? The shortest hole on the course, and no Birdies :oIt is a tough hole with the water carry and limited ceiling. It's 150 feet to carry the water (and it's water all the way from the end of the tee box), but you can bail-out on either side. This hole has always reminded me of Hole #16 at Augusta National. Pretty short and simple, but the water is very much on your mind and causes many mis-shots.

It looks like this course will challenge the top players, as well as be enjoyable for other skill levels.

Thanks for doing the numbers Jerry.

EDIT (2/17/08):
I heard yesterday that the Eagle on Hole #2 by Tom Brown may be a mis-report. Sure would have been a good one though!

johnrock
Feb 16 2008, 04:39 PM
Hole #5 also seems odd. A wide open, downhill tee shot (500 feet to the dogleg turn), that makes you want to throw every driver in your bag. Then another 180 feet or so,and only 1 Birdie! I suspect the water nearby is what makes the approach and putt so tricky. I predict more birdies on this one once players have more chances at it, especially when the wind is blowing it's normal direction.

That brings up a good question:

Do scoring averages come down on successive rounds?

Probably not if conditions worsen, but it seem's like they would come down noticably once players get more than just 1 round on the course (maybe not if they have been putting in a lot of practice time playing the course).

Jroc
Feb 18 2008, 03:58 PM
I'm sure the averages would come down if the course was played more. However, given all the OB potential out there, it might not. Since there were only 2 Gold rated players in these scores...its a little harder to get an accurate sense of the scoring spreads. I talked to Chuck Kennedy about that, and even with his experienced adjustments to the Hole Forecaster, the SSA came out at 68...still within a stroke of the estimated SSA of 69. I will be real interestd to see what the actual tournament scores say about the course. Pray for no wind that weekend!!

No birdies on Hole 5?! Heck, I birdied it in the wind and snow at Thanksgiving :o That holes easy ;) Really, it was 2 well placed shots I only hope I can duplicate at the Shootout.

The next time I'm in Amarillo will be for the Woodman event April 12. I would like to tour the course then. With all the foliage out, I'm sure it will look a lot different than I saw it in November.

Jroc
Feb 18 2008, 04:04 PM
Speaking of the Woodman event, do you think we could get the CHAMP course set up during that weekend? Perhaps Sunday? The Woodman event is on Sat. I'm sure it would be a great turnout...could raise a little money for the Shootout too. It would also give us some more scores to do some last minute tweaking to the course (if the layout is not already set in stone)...

johnrock
Feb 18 2008, 04:15 PM
A few concerns with setting up the CHAMP course:

1) It takes a LOT of volunteer work to set up, and committed volunteers are hard to come by;

2) The course uses a LOT of shared-use areas, reserving those areas is something that we just can't do too often;

3) Without reservations, there will have to be a lot of sending spotters ahead to deal with non-golfers unless the weather is really nasty.

Other than that, I'm all for it! The more rounds we can put in, the better it will be come event time.

Players list is up. 90 players so far - thats right....90. Please remember that this is pre-registration only. We will not take money Saturday morning. You can register on TitleDisc or call Matt Smart at the number listed above. The field will be limited to 150, so don't delay! Its very possible this will fill early.

I got a chance to play the Champ course this past weekend and while I think we may have overestimated the OB potential overall, this course is NOT for the faint of heart. Par is your friend...hehe. Rock came in with a 71 to win on a fairly windy day. I managed to stay under 80 by a stroke and noted some better decisions that could have been made to save at least 5 strokes. I'm looking forward to getting another crack at it in a few weeks.

If its at all possible to make this event, I 100% gurantee you will NOT be dissapointed (unless you donate too much plastic :D) But on the bright side, your bag will be lighter /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif 10,300+ feet is a lot a walking!!

Hehe....ok. Thought for a minute you were going soft ;)

It IS great to see Amarillo and DisCrazy getting some big-time attention. I have always thought of Disc Creek as a diamond in the rough, but it won't be unknown after this weekend :D Add in the only true Gold level course for 1,000+ miles, sweet payout, food and beverages provided, etc, etc.... I really think everyone will have a GREAT time.

I've said a few years ago when DisCrazy wasnt so well known and I say it again: The sky is the limit with Matt Smart, DisCrazy, and the DisCrazy Shootout. I dont know what his plans are for the future, but it would not surprise me at all if this is an NT event within the next 5 years. Matt is a very motivated person and he has a good club supporting him. Who knows!?! Regardless of the future, its very flattering to see such high calibur players choosing to play this event this year!! :D Hope you can make it up this way in the future James.

I have always thought of Disc Creek as a diamond in the rough, but it won't be unknown after this weekend

This is what I've been trying to tell folks for 20 years! The trick is, you have to get off of the Interstate to see the true potential of this area.

Matt is a very motivated person and he has a good club supporting him.

Do you mean the Texas Panhandle Flying Disc Association, or this RMR gang that's been putting their graffitti around the course and claiming that the Disc Creek course is theirs? The TPFDA has been promoting Disc Golf around here for a long time, working with the Parks Dept. to make things better for everyone since 1995. And before that it was the Complete Circle Frisbee Club, and before that it was the Amarillo Frisbee Club. So yeah, it's been a long time coming. If we could get the whole group to work together these days, we could do really big things and make Disc Golf one of the most popular activities for the Parks Dept. Instead we see more and more that just want to use gang-type tactics because they can't get along with those that have worked hard and poured sweat to make the course what it is. Maybe someday they'll see the light

As Brad Hammock would say..." I'm the best Master player ever and when you get old enough you welcome to come try to beat me..." classic stuff :o I will be in Amarillo tomorrow, who wants some?????

Looking forward to getting back over to Amarillo. It is always a good time - I have been fortunate enough to make a couple events in Amarillo and they were both a blast. The people treat the players so nice and take good care of you. This will be my first Shootout - it is going to be fun.

Mini golf is a blast!

Hey Kelly,
When you come in on I-40 midway through town is the main interchange. stay in the far right lane. It will put you headed downtown on Buchanan street. Go all the way through downtown. You will go past Amarillo blvd. After that Buchanan will turn into the Dumas hwy. You will only be on the hwy for about a half mile and you will see the 24th street exit. Get off there and go left over the overpass. Thompson Park is right there. Go into the entrance and the main road will take you right to the course.
Looking forward to meeting you guys!

Doubles on Friday on the CHAMP course! Offer up some sacrificial discs to the Lakes before the SHOOTOUT. Or throw a magical Destroyer out to the middle of the lake on #18 and see if you can make it float back to the shore!

The wind has been rough the last 2 days. Hopefully it'll calm down some for the weekend.

I'm excited, I can't wait to get a few rounds on the CHAMP course. JROC and JOHN ROCK teaming up for the doubles round Friday. If I remember correctly, we did pretty good last time. LET'S DO IT!!!!!

It looks like the weather is going to be perfect for the weekend!!! Flex start doubles should start about 2:00.
Maybe Coda and i can tame the champ course!! If it can even be tamed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

So, with all of these upper level players in town for official rounds, will we see new records on the Disc Creek course? Sunday afternoon I tied the record from the BLUE TEES (50). We'll be using the regular course with no extra holes (other than ULTRA LONG #11, and the ISLAND HOLE on #15), so these rounds should count towards official records. From the WHITE (concrete) TEES the record is 44. Yesterday in Jay & Des Reading's Doubles round, Matt Smart/Jon Kaylor teamed up for a 44. I heard they had 7 birdies in a row at one point.

What's the record for MINI Golf? :D

What is the best round turned in so far on the CHAMP course?

johnrock
May 03 2008, 11:01 PM
Mid 60's I believe was the lowest on the CHAMP course. Lowest on the Disc Creek course was a 50.

Eric M. is leading Open, with Jay R. close behind. Finnan M. is leading the local contingent of OPEN players. Marcus R. is leading the old pack. The rest should be up soon.

Cold and windy morning made the CHAMP course difficult, too much OB and trees for some players. Beautiful conditions for the second round.

Day 1 score are up. Suprisingly, the SSA for the CHAMP course came in at just over 71. I have checked the layouts several times, and I'm petty sure this is entered right. Of course, I'm dog tired and could have made a mistake.

More tommorrow

All scores are up. Coda shoot an amazing 61 but fell short to McCabe. The CHAMP course played even harder today with the winds picking up. Everyone seemed to have a good time and Matt Smart and crew did a great job.

Got to get on the road...more tommorrow.

Great tournament! The Amarillo crew really came through on this one. Huge sponsorship, amazing turnout, and world-class players competing on some true world-class holes. Props to Coda for completely obliterating the Champ course with that 61. MA1 was won by a huge, high-risk fairway ace on the very last hole. Robbie threw a sick long drive (I still don't think he got all of it) to take the cash in that mini-event and the Readings both finished really well... in the raffle :D.

Fun times, to be sure. Next year lets get the Am pads marked with teesigns so that everyone plays form the right spot and this thing will be just about the best event in Texas all year. Maybe we should pool our money and charter a plane from Dallas for the 2009 5th Annual DisCrazy Shootout!

Great Tourney! I was so very happy to get to play this event this year. Big huge thanks to Matt and all his staff for the great experience. The Amarillo crew did a great job on getting "The Champ" course ready to ROCK.

The champ course is very comparable to the Gold layout at USDGC.

I always have a good time when I go to Amarillo and this trip did not disappoint.

I was just looking over the scores and I noticed something really interesting about the Open Women's division. Remember that they played from the same pads as MPO and MA1. Get this:

Of course Des won, she's the best lady golfer in the world. She beat the *entire* MA1 field and almost exactly half of MPO, including an unofficial 994-rated round. no big surprise there :)

second place, the lovely Jennifer Allen. She is rated 922, which in a ratings-based event would have put her in MA2. She would have killed us, shooting an average of 949-rated golf. It wouldn't have been the first time she schooled that division.

Sheila and Liz, third and fourth places respectively, would have both *easily* cashed in MA1, even though their ratings would put them in MA2. Excellent play.

Kathy and Misti both shot well above their ratings and similarly would have completely owned their respective ratings-based divisions.

Let us take a minute to appreciate the game that these ladies have. It was truly a spectacular showing for the FPO division. *applause*

I have to give a huge thanks to all my sponsors. This could not happen without you!
Congrats McCabe and Des on a great win!!! And Coda with a 61! That is just sick.
It was hard to sit on the sidelines but at the same time i was able to watch alot of great golf from these top players. I would have loved to competed with you guys.
Thanks for the putting clinic Jay and Des.
Thanks to everyone who stepped up at the tournament and lended a hand and helped out.

From what I've heard from Kyle(waytogo) Norrid and my brother, these tourneys are top notch. It looks like they may jump up a tier next year if possible. The ammeneties are awesome. The champ course sounds really cerebral. Try to schedule this one on a weekend other than Masters Cup and I can make it.

What a great weekend! I had been looking forward to it for months and it was as good as I had hoped! Big thanks to all the super Pros that came (thats basically everyone above me in the Pro division :D). I'm sooo happy that Amarillo is on the national disc golf map now with their solid Disc Creek DGC course and a very challenging, scenic, gold level CHAMP course. I talked to several of the Pro's and though its different, they compared the CHAMP course favorably to the Winthrop Gold course at USDGC. Very good compliment. Matt definitly wants to make this temporary setup apart of every Discrazy Shootout in the future! We are going to analyze score spreads, comments, and evaluate the course in general to make next years CHAMP setup even better!!

Thanks to John Rock for designing the CHAMP course. I think he's been eyeing that side of the park for many, many years in hopes of one day creating a world class course. Thanks to the Amarillo Parks and Rec Dept. for allowing that to happen.

Big thanks to Matt Smart and all the staff that put in LOTS of time and energy to get the courses set up. I heard that it took 2 cases of orange paint just for the OB lines on the CHAMP course  There were a few things that got left out or weren't marked clearly, but everyone seemed to handle it just fine...thanks for your patience.

On a personal note, it was really gratifying to play with such high calibur players. I learned a lot about my game this weekend and managed to put together my best 3 rounds of golf in a sanctioned event. I enjoyed the experience greatly and was overall satisfied with my performance. Good to see Robbie Bratton finish up strong on a bum ankle. His first round was...well, forgetable...but he picked it up and shot 2 high rated rounds and finished up with an ace on Hole #3, the last hole of the tournament. J D Ramirez is still not quite back to form, but picked it up and finished with a solid showing. Coda was solid, REALLY solid. The fact that he shot a 61 the final round was astounding, but the real astounding statistic for me was the fact that he didnt card anything higher than a 4 the entire 3rd round  Now THATS SOLID!! But, Eric McCabe is the hottest player on the National Tour for a reason. His win keeps him undefeated in Texas this year. One thing that stood out to me about Eric was after one round when he was standing close to the score area and picked up a few cards and helped add scores. Just a few, but it was certainly something he didnt have to do. Pretty impressive IMO....

To the rest of the Oklahoma crew, the New Mexico crew, all the Houston group, and everyone else that made the trip..thank you! I hope we were able to show you a really great weekend and hope you'll put us on your must attend list for next year!! :D

Thanx Matt,Discrazy and the whole Amarillo crew and its sponsors for a great event! You guys have set the bar high for WEST TEXAS DISC GOLF. I had a blast. It was great too see old friends and meet some new ones. Thanks for the sweet battle Kyle...you got game my brother!! Congrats to all the winners. That new course is definitely one of the best and most difficult in Texas and I can't wait to play it again next year. Thankyou to Sherri for being my caddie and biggest supporter. I hope everyone that played in Amarillo will make the BIG ARMS Oct. 11-12..the payout will be huge atleast $2000 to the Open winner  ....more on that soon :D

Great overview, Baldguy, of the women pros. My 9 year old son, Nicholas, and I had the pleasure of caddying part of the final round for Des and Liz and we found that these ladies play just as serious golf, if not more so, than any pro man we've seen. Congrats to Des on the big win, and also for winning alot at the raffle! We also had the pleasure of caddying for Jay Reading and Jeff Layland in the final 4 and I've got to say that these men are truly sick individuals. They throw as far as I could only hope to throw. There was also quite a battle in the jr. division with Dillon Vallance edging out 9 year old Innova scout team member, my son, Nick Duran by 4 strokes. Great Job Dillon, keep practicing! Also my other son, 16 year old Chris Duran placing 6th in the advanced division was quite an accomplishment.
Overall we had a great time and thought Matt did a great job of running a fine tourney. I can only imagine it getting better next year. We'll be there to find out! See you then!

Finally got the CHAMP course stats done. Note that these stats do not include the Top 4 Open players, as I did not get those cards before I left, but I wanted to get the information out that I had and will amend the statistics later. These statistics are generated from Rounds 1 and 3 at the Discrazy Shootout. They include these divisions: Open, Masters, Grandmasters, Open Women, Advanced Men, Advanced Masters. Only current players from those divisions with a rating were included, which totaled 50 players.

Not sure how many OB penalties were taken on some of the holes. But if some had significant OB percentages such as 50% of players going OB, then those penalties would be deducted when doing an analysis for SSA in relation to appropriate par. For example, Par for hole 17 at Winthrop is still properly set at 3 even though the SSA might even be over 3.5 or even 4 some years.

So, I should only include the actual number of throws on those high OB holes? There were probably 3 holes with high OB percentage.

May we see the numbers from round 2?
It should provide a good sample of ratings to give a good evaluation of the Disc Creek course (BLUE TEES). If I remember right, the weather was pretty good. We didn't play the BLUE TEE for #15, but still nobody shot better than the course record (50).

So how do the numbers of the CHAMP course look compared to other GOLD courses? What level does the BLUE TEE set-up for the Disc Creek course fit in? Is the new super-fast driver making our old favorite course a PAR 3 "pitch & putt"?

Was there ever an official count of "swimmers"? ;)
I only lost 1. Pretty much just a dumb-*** attempt at an Anhyzer throw over the water on #14.

For purposes of analysis for setting par, I cap any scores that are more than 3 above the average. So if the average is 3.5, then the highest score I allow is 6 on a hole.

With regard to OBs, if you actually have a count, the hole doesn't make sense if more than maybe 1/3 of the players at the level the hole was designed for take an OB on a specific throw.

Do I use the adjusted hole average (1000 rated golfer average) or the actual hole average?
