Fontana Village Resort, DISConcepts, Innova Disc Golf, and Disc Golf United present the Fontana Flying Disc Festival (3FD). The inaugural FONTANA FLYING DISC FESTIVAL weekend will be a 1 day 2 round PDGA C tier event on Saturday March 22nd and a 1 day Disc Golf United handicapped 1 round tournament on Sunday March 23rd. In addition to the disc golf tournament there will be countless family activities, an extreme DISTANCE competition, a putt putt tournament (on a sweet onsite course), a mini-disc golf course, LIVE BAND, and FREE BEER in the ballroom! From the company that brought you the Tupelo Bay Open, look for the course that Owner Pat Farrell of DISConcepts claims to be the BEST disc golf course he has ever been involved with. Unbelievable beauty in the Great Smokey Mountains, this challenging mountain course features booming drives, tricky greens, loads of elevation, and well maintained fairways. Hands down the BEST onsite amenities I have ever experienced at a resort that features a world class course. Lodge rooms, cabins, houses, golf carts, restaurant, bar, boats, mini golf, small store

Over the last year DISConcepts has designed and install a par 60 mountain disc golf course at Fontana Village Resort. The staff is very supportative of the sport and is allowing us to have full use of the resort during the 3FD weekend. With this being the Easter weekend it will be very important for players and their families to understand that this weekend is a great way to get to the Great Smokey Mountains with your family and play some disc golf, but have plenty of time to do activities with your family as well. Heck, we will also have many different activities for your family to do while you are playing and partying. Check out the Fontana website to learn more about the resort and look for updates in the next week. When it comes down to it this is planned to be a BIG disc golf party, with a relaxed vibe, and loads of fun. What else are you going to do while waiting for Easter? Lets Golf! Bring your club, bring your family, and bring your friends. You will not be disappointed! We have the course, the amenities, and the fun; NOW we need you!

All lodging at Fontana will be discounted from now until April 1st (which includes the tournament weekend). Lodge rooms normally $89.00 are $59.00 per night (very nice). Cabins (all models) $99.00 per night! I like to stay in the Garden rooms that overlook the 2nd and 18th fairway. You can throw discs from your private balcony at the #18 target. Checkout their website to find out more about the different cabins. You can also rent a golf cart for the entire weekend and zip around the resort (including the disc golf course). Sorry but not enough carts for the tourney but super fun ripping around the hilly resort. More to come....

Any plans for more events later in the year? This sounds great but the date conflicts with March Madness (http://www.saulsinsurance.com/marchmadness) at Earlewood, and Fontana would be a great escape from the heat from May-August. Or would that be problematic, as the "busy season" at Fontana Village?

Sorry about the conflict with the March Madness. The owners of Fontana really wanted to have a PDGA event and this was the only date we could get. During their summer months the resort is VERY busy (especially with their new waterpark). But with the Easter weekend being one of the slow times we will have the majority of the resort to ourselves.
Starting at this 1st event I will be launching a Disc Golf United virtual league. I have been discussing with Harold at Innova about an idea I had to tweak the current DGU handicap league where you would typically show up at a set weekly time and location to play in a handicap league. With Fontana we are going to experiment with allowing those who are registered for this league to play at anytime during the season March to December and have there score officially recorded and entered into the DGU database. There will be prizes at the end of the season for different categories. Not all figured out yet but will be by the March event time. The 1st handicaps will be set using the scores from the tournament on Saturday. So yes, there will be other events at Fontana later this year and also the DGU virtual league. Stay tuned.

Here are a few of the categories we are considering:
Frequent Flyer: Player who players the most "on record" rounds during the season
HIGH-LOW: Player who has the largest spread from their 1st handicap to their lowest point handicap at the end of the season.
CHAMP: Player who shoots the lowest adjusted round score
CHUMP: Player who shoots the highest adjusted round score
Mediocre Award: Player who finishes exactly in the middle of the scoring average
Hero: Player who brings the most new players to the league (have this noted and tallied on your sign up sheet)
Zero: Players who establish a "zero" handicap anytime during the season
Oldest Player
Youngest Player....

great stuff.... thanks! do you know the layout we'll be playing for the tourney? (for diff divisions?)

DISConcepts
Feb 01 2008, 07:43 PM
Long to Long set-up for sure but I would like to add some length on a few holes to really show how this course could play in the Gold position. I installed the tee pads in the long position and many of the current target locations are in the short sleeves. For everyday play this is the best layout. If there ends up being some juniors or intermediate players I would be more that happy to layout adjusted tee areas. But be assured that for the most part each hole will be in the most challenging set-up. 10 under par or more could happen just as easily as 10+ over par.

an update from an email from Pat below... Keeps sounding better and better!!!

here is what I am working on at this time. Yes, I am trying to go for the festival atmosphere but realize it may take a few years for it to really take off. We are in the process in lining up a band that played at the Fontana Hyak Festival last year (Commerce). We will have
the ballroom for our festivities at night and will provide keg beer. The ballroom and outdoor center overlook a field that I plan to have lighted for distance and accuracy events. I'm hoping for carnival style disc games where people can win prizes. Also just below the outdoor center and ballroom is the hillbilly putt putt course. Hoping to put together beer / putt putt / event at night. I will be encouraging clubs or areas of disc golfers to band together and show their disc golf festiveness in unique ways.Really I'm just trying to let people know about the resort and the disc golf course in hopes that they will return with their family and friends in the future. This is truly a unique opportunity to play disc golf on a sweet course in such a beautiful place. I will be meeting again with the people at Fontana tomorrow and the final details will be in place.

There is not a Ball Golf course at the resort. There is a Putt Putt course (Hillbilly Putt Putt) that will be free to play for disc golfers for the weekend. There are 10 to 15 kids already coming aged 3-10 Fontana will be providing and hosting an Easter Egg hunt on Saturday. Crafts and Kids activities will be casual and o.k. to just drop in during a scheduled event. There is also an indoor pool so don't forget your suit!

One thing I have not mentioned yet is that Fontana does not have cell phone coverage. All or most rooms have phones and the lodge has a pay phone but for those that are tied to their cell phone you will need to drive about 20 miles down the mountain to get reception.
Schedule:
Friday
