I'm going to try and talk Baldguy into showing us the team names up there instead of the town and state stuff...

I went to go add this functionality to titleDISC and realized that I made a boo-boo :(

First understand that this tournament is using 90% new code since it is the first doubles event titleDISC has handled since I re-wrote nearly the entire site. That said, I should have tested this part...

Nobody who registered before tonight via titleDISC for this event has a team name associated with the entry. it was simply a typo on my part and it's now fixed... but because of that typo, I didn't store the team name with the registration :(. I can fix it though! If you folks will be so kind as to send me the team names via email or PM here on this board, I'll be more than happy to update my database and help you fly your team flag proudly :). I assure you that the rest of the data is in there, I just need to re-populate the team names and all will be well.

my email address is [email protected] If you registered for this event before about 30 minutes ago, please send me your team name and I'll get it all fixed up :)

Come on Josh...you can find a partner!

baldguy
Feb 19 2008, 11:31 PM
How 'bout a mixed-only division? I know that Deidre and I would enjoy being partners and team Shabookie has expressed interest. I think it would be awesome to compete with other couples from around the state (good thing Jay and Des aren't Ams :D). Whatcha think?

ching_lizard
Feb 20 2008, 10:09 AM
Sounds like there is a "demand" for it Josh.

We've got 2 such teams already - The Petre's in MA3 and SueMac and Matchu in MA2.

Randon would love to see a return of a "Women's" division out there too! He knows of at least one other woman looking for a partner right now...

harry
Feb 20 2008, 11:06 AM
Pencil in another Mixed team Larry! Probably MA3 since I seriously doubt you can find another GM team

Entry should be paid this weekend if we decide to do it!

baldguy
Feb 20 2008, 11:35 AM
Should we just combine them to one division, maybe two? D and I both play intermediate, so MA2 is as low as we can go. It sounds lke SueMac and Matchu are in for MA2, and I think team Shabook would be too. Petre's move up! :D c'mon Harry, bring your partner up to MA2 :)

harry

Feb 21 2008, 12:00 PM
My partner hasn't played any organized golf in some time. He doesn't have a rating, and if Gordon would give a blessing, we'd love to play in a mixed only division or maybe if we all where in MA3, it would be cool.

ching_lizard
Feb 21 2008, 01:18 PM
Gordon is out of country until just before the tourney.

I will check with the Land Baron and see what he thinks. I think with all of the strong interest in it, he'll probably agree.

Keep your eyes peeled for further word soon. :D

(BTW - As Gordo's surrogate here, I'm in favor of it...I better check with the PDGA to make sure we aren't stepping on their toes by doing something like this.)

ching_lizard
Feb 21 2008, 01:54 PM
Spoke with the Land Baron and we've agreed to let it stand as is for this year. It would create too many difficulties to try and slap this together this late in the game...mixed doubles teams can register in the Men's division where the highest rated player places them.

I will make a donation (and accept any others if anyone wants to chip in with me :D) to make a special award for the best score for a mixed doubles team.

Randon, Gordon and I will sit down over that weekend and talk about the possibility of hosting a mixed doubles set of divisions.

But in the meantime, Harry and Baldguy you can each register as a team in your respective divisions and still have another mixed doubles team to compete against. I'll cough up special prizes for both divisions.

harry
Feb 21 2008, 02:07 PM
If you cough them up I hope youo have the decency to at least wipe them off :D

suemac

What the heck are you guys talking about? I've been bringing Charlie out there since he was barely bigger than my hand. Danny Berry brings Chocolate out there. Actually, I wish I could make it. Charlie needs a weekend on the ranch. And no, I did NOT train him to lay down on the tee box when someone else is about to drive. He just figured that out on his own. haha

What can anyone tell me about this course? Is it for big arms? Is it long and narrow? Is it in the woods? I just want to get some info on the layout.

The course has a good mixture of it all...

For long-arms, there is the 1,040 foot #10. Several very long holes, and quite a few tight-line holes as well. There are a few ace-able holes out there even for us short-arms. :D

The trees out there are all very hungry though...I don't think Randon feeds them often enough. Staying in the fairway is key...getting off the fairway usually results nasty/tricky lies that can leave you bleeding as a result of tangling with the vines. :D

It's a really good course in a beautiful setting. Getting your first experience of it in a Doubles format is probably one of the friendliest introductions you could ever get to the Snow Farm.

If anyone is looking for a partner for State Doubles, I have at least one Intermediate that is looking for a partner for this edition. Any takers?

Regarding fireworks and fires: <font color="red"> NO fireworks!!! </font> Only the Land Baron himself can do those.

If there is not a burn ban (and we hope to get final word about that from Randon soon), then fires in the camp sites are permitted, but still <font color="red"> NO open ground fires </font> . You can use a grill, pit, etc, but it needs to be contained in something.

This is a Ranch Rule that Randon put in place a few years ago after he had too many instances of beer bottles being put into the campfires and then him finding broken glass all over the ground for the next few months.

...thanks for your opinionated jab there Susan.

FYI - A "quick decision" would be opening up a new set of divisions once flyers had already been published and players had already registered for it. Never a good idea.

For once, I actually like the idea of advanced planning for a change like this as it isn't a "little" change. Taking the time to think about it, plan it and then publicize it is likely to cause this to turn out to be a lot better for the players/teams in the long run. I think it is a really cool idea to run mixed doubles and I'm looking forward to seeing it incorporated into Texas State Doubles in the future. It might even be cool to see a Pro/Am mixed doubles too! :D

Mar 04 2008, 05:09 PM
Larry,

Thanks for noticing. As for the flyer reasoning...........still weak in my book. We all know this is a "relaxed" atmosphere, and I just found it difficult to swallow that a decision was made with such super sonic speed.

BTW, Jessica DeBray is looking for a partner. She would love to play on a mixed team if any one out there is looking for a partner.

You are still welcome to come to the Ranch on Friday and play the casual doubles round or practice, and see if there have been any cancellations, but at the very latest you need to be there by 8:30 Saturday morning, ready to register if there are any spots available.

If you want to play in Flight A, but dont register on titledisc today: you have to drive out to the ranch on Friday; first come first served for any available spaces on Friday March 7th, starting at 1pm. You have to come out to the ranch to register and pay, and you MUST be there no later than 11pm. Earlier is better! More chance of spaces being available, plus the chance to set up camp, practice, relax, party, etc. Randon is very strict about this, he wont hold spots just because someone calls and says they are coming out. Per the flyer:

<font color="blue"> FOR FLIGHT A ONLY: AT LEAST ONE TEAMMATE MUST CHECK-IN ON FRIDAY MARCH 7TH BETWEEN 1:00 PM AND 11:00 PM (or register - if space still available). This person must pay all the teams fees that are still due: ace pot, non-PDGA fees, etc. NO REGISTRATION OR CHECK-IN FOR FLIGHT A ON SATURDAY MARCH 8TH. Any pre-registered team not checked in by 11:00 pm on Friday will be dropped and replaced by a team on the waitlist.
</font>

So no driving out Saturday morning and signing up, even if there are spots. Flight A must be there on Friday.

We really really encourage people to register online today through www.titledisc.com. (http://www.titledisc.com.) We know you hate driving out there Friday not knowing if you can get in, but if you dont pre-register today, that is the only way to try and get in.

Sorry to be a bit repetitive, but here we go...

Not many signups yesterday on titledisc, so we have <font color="blue"> 15 spots available in Flight A: Advanced Men and Advanced Masters </font>

If you want to play in Flight A, you have to drive out to the ranch on Friday; first come first served for any available spaces on Friday March 7th, starting at 1pm. Any pre-registered team not checked in by 11:00 pm on Friday will be dropped and replaced by a team on the waitlist.

So no driving out Saturday morning and signing up, even if there are spots. Flight A must be there on Friday.

---------------------------------------------

With 15 spots available, it is very wide open (we usually only have 3 or 4 spots at this point). We can't guarantee there will be a spot there when you show up but the odds are pretty da** good.

If you want, you can send only one teammate out to register and pay, and then the partner can show up later. But the first person there needs to pay all the fees for both.

You can also send your money with someone else who might be going out to the ranch earlier than you. However, be sure to send enough money to cover both player's entry fees. PLUS, at least one person from the actual team will still need to show up before 11pm to check in (just like all the pre-registered teams).

See y'all soon :D

Oops, I missed this question earlier, sorry Jerry!

You must provide your own fire container. And rocks on the ground in a ring do not count. That is still considered an open ground fire (which is a Randon NO NO).

I've seen people use grills, trash cans, and all kinds of interesting contraptions.

Thanks,

The last error message I had kept complaining that one of the division fields didn't contain a valid 3 character division code in it. I went through them all visually and nothing jumped out at me. I will have to enter them by hand and copy and paste them down the entire division column. I was using the following division codes: MA1, MM1, MG1, FW3, MA2 and MA3. I know I mess up the Women's code sometimes, but FW3 should be right I think. Right?

Hmmm...okay...I think I have the rounds posted up and most of the ratings stuff setup correctly (or at least as correctly as Doubles formats can get...) You can view the results by Clicking on This!!! (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=7405&amp;year=2008&amp;incl udeRatings=1#Advanced)

I generated these based on (usually) using the PDGA number of the highest rated player on a team. I probably could tweak it a bit more and make sure that I got them all right, but probably probably won't make that much difference except in some isolated cases... In some cases, there was only one partner with a PDGA number too.

It was a great weekend for disc golf!

(Stories to follow...)

Sometimes *stuff* just works out right.

There are a lot of things surrounding a doubles event that you don't usually see, or have to deal with at a regular tourney. Usually, there is some guy that shows up and wants to play but doesn't have a partner. Chances are usually kind of slim for those guys because they have to be able to find a partner in the same division etc.

Then sometimes you get the team that is all signed up, and then something happens and one or sometimes both players don't show up.

This year, both happened at once and I ended up hooking up a local Houston player (probably mid-Intermediate level) with one of the Advanced division guys (Scott Coleman) who had his partner cancel out late on Friday because the flu-bug he had was getting worse. Scott was desparate to find a partner at the last second and Casey wanted to play, but wasn't sure about being competitive in the Advanced division.

Neither player had met each other before and I hooked them up about 2 minutes before we began the player meeting. They went out to course for the opening round of best disc and ended up tied for 1st place after the first round! I got the MOST rewarding feeling at seeing the looks on their faces when they arrived to turn their card in!

Both of those guys (and it was greatly appreciated by me) pulled me aside at different times during the weekend to thank me for hooking them up with their partner!

He-he-he...I love it when *c*r*a*p* happens and something really good turns out from it! :D:D:D

Battle in Women's division.

We were very glad to see a card of women players out there this year. A couple of arms had to twisted a bit on Thursday before, but we had 2 Intermediate Womens teams out there.

It turned out to be a tight race from wire to wire. Jessica Debray and Karen Dorrier gave up a single throw in their 2nd round which turned out to be the deciding factor in crowning Stephanie Allen and Michele Owens as the TxSt Am Doubles Women Champions! 246 throws versus 247 throws!

Great job ladies!!! Now come back next year and defend it! :D

We had 3 mixed doubles teams out there competing "heads up" in the Men's Recreational Division.

SueMac and Matchu ended up finishing in 2nd place against some very strong Rec. teams.

Because of the PDGA rule changes allowing Pros to compete in Am divisions if their ratings permit it, a number of teams (including myself) had Pros competing this weekend. Dave Nesbitt played Advanced with his 16-17 y/o son Paul. They played very steady all weekend and ended up finishing in Advanced division in 6th place!

In the Advanced Masters Division, The Woodlands team of Mark McCoin and Cecil Larkin dominated the division wire to wire. They dropped the "hot round" in the division until the final where they were tied by the second place team of Romero and Pickett with at 30. Their final total of 189 tied the Advanced Men's Division! Great shootin' guys!

Oh yeah...and many thanks go out to our host, Mr. Randon "Land Baron" Dillingham for hosting yet another edition of the Texas State Amateur Disc Golf Championship and to all of the players that supported the animal shelter in LaGrange by playing in the 2008 edition! :D

You guys (and gals) ROCK!!! :D
