I just noticed there is a book recommendations thread, but not a music one. So since I get most of my music recommendations from discers (including the music used for DGTV vids) I figured this'd be a good idea.

My recommendation - the new Zox album, released today: Line in the Sand

Throw in some Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps along with a Witold Lutoslawski concerto, for good measure.

I know lots of dinosaur bands like;

Spacemen 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacemen_3) and one of the splinter groups, Spiritualized (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiritualized), that sprang up after they split up.

See also the rich tradition of sleaze-rock headed up by The Cramps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cramps). A similar, but less over the top, sound from The Gun Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gun_Club) from LA. And of course, The Birthday Party (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Birthday_Party_(band)), who didn't amount to much commercially, but have influenced countless other bands and was where Nick Cave (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Cave) got his start.

I don't know shucks about the garbage being passed off as country music these days but I'm also a big fan of Hank Williams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hank_Williams) , Johnny Cash, Grateful Dead and Meat Puppets. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meat_puppets).

I like all of the afore mentioned bands as well. I'm a huge Cramps and Gun Club fan. My favorite newer artist is Firewater. The Man on the Burning Tightrope and Psychopharmacology are excellent cds.

BTW, Keith J told me about your connection with Gwar. One of my best friends went to VCU around '84. I remember Death Piggy (pre Gwar), Drone 13, and Wog. I still have some old cassettes of them. One day I'll transfer them to cd.

what was your friends name? i was at vcu then as well. i know all the folks in Wog and Death Piggy (at least the survivng ones-Sean has been gone for a while) but don't recall Drone 13. there was a band called the Mutant Drones however that included Wes Freed- now better known for doing the Drive By Truckers art.

Firewater is great- i have all their stuff, i like "get off the cross we need wood for the fire" the best. the leader of Firewater was in one called Cop Shoot Cop prior to that- their last (i think) album "interference" was great too.

Best show that I would have NEVER expected to say that about:
Journey and James Taylor. werd.

in the 6 changer:

June - If you Speak Any Faster... softer emo pop, great flow, from Chicago, IL
A Wilhelm Scream - Ruiner... fast pop punk, great lyrics, Massachusetss Boys
Let It Die - S/T - HARDCORE. THE END.... No longer a group
Ceaser Presents: Brooklyns Finest - Hov vs. BIG... The Gurus from BK at work
Go It Alone - The Only Blood Between Us... Smart Fast Hardcore from Vancouver, BC
Above This Fire - In Perspective... Hardcore Metal Emo Rockers From Cleveland, OH

John, my friend's name is Carrington. You had to have crossed paths. He kinda stood out as he is 6'6" tall, pencil thin, with glasses. He resembles Mr. Mackie from South Park. Between the two of us , we kinda got that band name right. It was Mutant Drone 13. It's good to see people are still into the old classics from that "vacuum" in the '80s. I watched a movie about the rise of punk(forgot the name of it), and they mention the classic Ramones, Sex Pistols, etc from the late '70s and early '80s. Then they basically skipped '82 through '90 and made it look as if nothing happened until Nirvana released Nevermind. I thought that was pretty lame.

Just discovered this thread and thought I'd add some info on my favorites from 2007.....

-Now that 2008 is here, I have put together a list of the CD's that I enjoyed the most that were released in 2007. There is a large variety of music on this list and all are worth checking out. Here you'll find acoustic music, jazz, blues, indie, r&b, country and some old fashioned rock & roll. So without further ado... here are the CD's that caught my ear in 2007... (In no particular order).

Wilco - "Sky Blue Sky" .... A mellow record compared to the past few from Wilco, but still a great record and one that would make my Top 10. If you watch TV at all you've probably heard some of the songs in the Volkswagen commercials.

JJ Grey & Mofro - "Country Ghetto" .... JJ Grey is a great songwriter and this is the 3rd record he's put out with Mofro. This is one of my favorite bands to see live right now and they're currently touring with a horn section. Great "swamp funk".

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals - "This Is Somewhere" .... I saw GP&TN open for Gov't Mule a couple times this fall and really enjoyed their sets. This is their most recent record and one that's seen more play than anything else in my CD player recently. At times Grace reminds me of Bonnie Raitt & other times Lucinda Williams. On top of being a songwriter, she plays guitar and Hammond B3.

Jason Isbel - "Sirens of the Ditch" .... Jason was one of the guitarists in Drive-By Truckers and this is his first solo record. This is a fine record that shows Jason's song writing & guitar playing skills.

Richard Thompson - "Sweet Warrior" ... RT's 1st "electric" recording since 2003. As usual, Richard crafts interesting lyrics to go along with his tasty guitar playing.

Neil Young - "Chrome Dreams II" ... Easily one of Neil's best record in years.

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - "Raising Sand" ... A very haunting & mellow record, yet very enjoyable. Robert & Alison's vocal work very well together. This one is making a lot of critics "Top 10" lists.

Will Bernard - "Party Hats" .. One of the best kept jazz guitar secrets on the planet. Super funky jazz to help you get your groove on.

Southern Culture On The Skids - "Countrypolitan Favorites" ... The first of four "covers" records on my list this year. SCOTS is a great band that always put out fun records and this one is no exception. An interesting mix of covers including songs by The Kinks, T. Rex, CCR & The Who (How about "Happy Jack" with banjo!). They even offered a bonus 4 track disc if you by the CD at an independent record store and this includes "These Boots Are Made For Walkin" and "Mr. Spaceman".

Bryan Ferry - "Dylanesque" ... The second of the covers records on my list and with this one Bryan takes on the songs of Bob Dylan. Highly recommended if you're a fan of Bryan Ferry, Roxy Music or Dylan.

John Fogerty - "Revival" ... This is as close as he's gotten in a long while to duplicating the sounds of the music he made with Creedence Clearwater Revival. If you're a fan of CCR, you'll definitely want to check this out.

The Infamous Stringdusters - "Fork In The Road" ... This is a fantastic record full of great pickin & singing. This young bluegrass band from Nashville is generating the kind of buzz now that Nickel Creek was getting when they hit it big. If you're a fan of bluegrass music, you definitely need to check this one out.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - "100 Days, 100 Nights" ... A complete throwback to late 60's and early 70's R&B. A nice recording from 2007 that fits in perfectly with those Stax & Motown records you know and love.

Scott Miller & The Commonwealth - "Reconstruction" ... Live albums don't get much livelier than this one. Features one of the best drinking & party songs of all time "Been Drunk All Around This Town". You'll be singing along before it's finished the first time.

Nickelback - "All The Right Reasons" ... One of my guilty pleasures of the year. These guys write hook laden songs and they ROCK. You should at least check out the lyrics to the song "Rock Star".... Funny & catchy.

Patti Smith - "Twelve" ... The third cover record on my list and Patti takes on songs from Jimi Hendrix, Tears for Fears, Neil Young, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, The Doors, Nirvana, The Allman Brothers & Stevie Wonder. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" slowed down and done with banjo, fiddle & upright bass is worth checking out.

Ricky Skaggs & Bruce Hornsby - "Ricky Skaggs & Bruce Hornsby" ... Ricky Skaggs always has a powerhouse bluegrass band backing him up and adding Bruce Hornsby to the mix works very nicely. And if you haven't heard it yet, you need to give a listen to their take on Rick James "Super Freak".

Spoon - "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" ... This one has grown on me the more I've listened to it and with this their 6th record, the "indie" Spoon is finally making it big. The first song reminds me of a cross between John Lennon & Wilco and others remind me of Squeeze.

David Byrne - "Live From Austin, TX" ... This live show was recorded in 2001 (the same tour as the show that he played at the Cat's Cradle)... but since the CD didn't come out until 2007, it makes my list. DB performs a nice mix of solo material & Talking Heads songs.... and even throws in a cover of "I Want To Dance With Somebody".

Kid Rock - "Rock N Roll Jesus" ... Another one of my guilty pleasures from last year. I've never been a fan of Kid Rock but I do like this record. On the rockers he sounds like Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and the country song he wrote for Pamela Anderson "Half Your Age" must be heard for the lyrics.

Radiohead - "In Rainbows" ... This album will probably be notorious mostly for it's method of distribution (the album has been available for download via the band's website with the option to pay whatever you want... even if that's nothing). It became available for purchase in stores the first week on January 2008. For this record, Radiohead returns to a more straight ahead (though subdued) rock sound.

Graham Parker - "Don't Tell Columbus" ... Graham's "Squeezing Out Sparks" was one of my favorite records of the late 70's. The songs on this album are classic GP and contain his usual satirical political and social views. Good stuff.

Lucinda Williams - "West" ... Nobody does dirty country blues like Lucinda and her voice sounds great. Lucinda's fans will love it.

Merle Haggard - "The Bluegrass Sessions" ... Hag's assembled the right pickers to transform his country material into his first ever foray into bluegrass. Despite the name, this CD isn't really bluegrass, but rather acoustic country with an old-time flavor. No matter what label you put on it though, it's still good music and Hags voice still sounds great.

John Scofield - "This Meets That" ... As one of the more popular electric guitar players on the jazz scene, John has been putting out good records for many years. Steve Swallow plays electric bass on this one, Bill Stewart plays drums and JS has a 4 piece horn section along for the ride. Bill Frisell joins for "House Of The Rising Sun" and they close with "I Can't Get No Satisfaction".

Modest Mouse - "We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank" ... The 5th record from this popular indie band. This one grows on me the more I listen.

The Arcade Fire - "Neon Bible" ... One of the more popular indie records released in 2007. Reminds me of 80's era Echo & The Bunnymen.

David Bromberg - "Try Me One More Time" ...Bromberg's first record since 1990 is a solo acoustic record and a fine one. In the liner notes DB says "the is the first record he's made where he wasn't trying to impress anybody... I'm just doing the tunes."

Miranda Lambert - "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" ... One of the better country albums of the year, A good songwriter & singer (ML wrote or co-wrote all but three songs) and those she didn't write include songs by Gillian Welch, Patti Griffin & Carlene Carter.

Foo Fighters - "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace" ... It's hard to believe these guys have been putting out records for 10 years and with this one they've regrouped with Gil Norton, the producer of their 1st record. This record rocks.

Fountains of Wayne - "Traffic and Weather" ... Catchy up-tempo power pop. "92 Subaru" sounds like Dave Edmunds fronting Cheap Trick and the title tracks sounds like something Rockpile could have put out back in the 80's.

Joe Bonamassa - "Sloe Gin" ... Joe was voted Guitar Player readers as 2007's Best Blues Guitarist and this is his seventh solo record. If you're a fan of heavy blues ala Stevie Ray Vaughan, you'll like this.

Lyle Lovett - "It's Not Big It's Large" ..Lyle first record in four years is an eclectic mix of songs that range from country swing through gospel-blues. If you've ever been a fan of Lyle's music, check this one out.

Led Zeppelin - "The Song Remains The Same" ... Originally recorded at Madison Square Garden in 1973 and released on record & as a movie in 1976. This 2007 re-release adds songs not originally included and has been nicely remastered by Jimmy Page. Reviews of this have been mixed as some complain of the editing done, but I really enjoy hearing a better and more complete recording of a great band in its heyday.

Poison - "Poison'd!" ... As someone who was never a fan of Poison or hair-metal bands, this one was a surprise to me and was another of my guilty pleasures from 2007. It's also the 4th record of covers songs on my list and includes songs by The Sweet, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Tom Petty, Marshall Tucker Band, The Romantics, Rolling Stones, The Cars, Kiss, The Who, Jim Croce, Loggins & Messina and Grand Funk Railroad. I wonder if this is now called "Bandana-metal"? ;^)

I hope you enjoyed reading about the music released in 2007 that saw the most time in my CD players or iPod. Hopefully you'll be able to discover something new from this list that you hadn't heard of before. And feel free to forward this along to any of your friends who are also music fans.

All the best for 2008,

Robbie

One of the last free range radio stations, WRAS 88.5 is right here in Atlanta. They have pretty much been my source for new music lately. I donated about 1500 albums to them around 5 years ago and still enjoy hearing my old records on their punk/progressive shows. I believe they can be heard online. Check them out if you can. My favorite shows are Rockabilly Freakout ( Mondays 8-10) and I Don't Care (Fridays 4-5). Their web address is www.wras.org (http://www.wras.org) .

Good, good reading Robbie. I've actually got seven of those and fully concur. Another hammer on the nail for a couple or three of them: Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, voice like Joplin morphed to Raitt but sweeter than either of them; Patti Smith, her version of "...Teen Spirit" has replaced Tori Amos' (played at ++++ volume of course) as my favorite; Krauss and Plant, what can you say, really ethereal sound like a melding of SigurRos and EmmyLou, reminds me a lot of Daniel Lanois' production of Harris' "Wrecking Ball"; Lucinda Williams, one of my favorites for music to do surgery by, not sure why...... maybe because it sounds like she's just before dragging me off to a back room somewhere........ /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif; Bonamassa, got every CD he's released and love them all, really good road music....

Gots to try some of the others. Thanks for the list my friend. You going to Tar River HGT this Sunday?
