Would there be any interest for an Advanced Master and Advanced Grandmaster only tournament in Council Bluffs Iowa June 21, 2008? Having a field of 11 advanced grandmasters in our Treasure Cove Classic last September, I was wondering if there was enough interest in a tournament that catered to the midwest advanced crowd? If you are interested, I would love to get a shout back.

Mike,
I live in CT but usually have to go to CA to actually play in a AGM division; I'd be tempted to come! Besides, I've never been to IA....

You would certainly be welcome to come. It would be rather interesting to have a field of around 30 over forty disc golfers at a tournament catered specifically for them in the midwest.

There was a Midwest Masters (Pro & Adv) tournament held last September in Stevens Point, WI. It was a great tournament for us older players. It wasn't heavily promoted IMHO and it still drew about 40 players.
When it's held would influence my decision. Being of masters age I have a family and with family comes commitments. Especially in the summer. A fall masters tournament as the "regular" season is winding down worked out great last year.
Would this be for Advanced only, no Pros? Most of my playing and traveling partners are Pro Masters. That might also influence my decision.

---There was a Midwest Masters (Pro & Adv) tournament held last September in Stevens Point---,
Was this a sanctioned event? I didn't seem to see it on the pdga tournaments. Would it really matter if a tournament of this type was sanctioned?

Undecided yet. I am testing the interest. Here in Council Bluffs, (right next to Omaha) we have a great group of masters and would love to see a multi state tournament field bringing in great competition.

Yes it was sanctioned. It took place on Sept. 8 of last year. It wouldn't really matter to me if it was sanctioned but everyone has their own opinion on that.
Looking back I was wrong with the attendance figures. There was only 21 players. It probably seemed like more because they had a lot of underage players from the local club helping run the tournament.
I guess I would just add that if I decided to make the journey from Green Bay to Council Bluffs it would be because I was able to get a couple more players from this area to come along and share the ride (& expenses). Unfortunately there are more Pro masters than Advanced masters. Specifically my two masters aged playing partners are both Pro.
My $.02 worth.

lol. gotta love any time someone in their thirties can still be called "underage" :D
out of pure curiosity, what is the draw of only offering over-forty divisions?

I'm not exactly sure. I think it was an attempt at getting more masters age players out by kind of saying, "it's a party just for players like you!" It may have been an attempt at shinning the spot light on divisions that may not get a whole lot of attention at a regular tournament. For me personally it was the idea that everyone in the tournament would be around my age or older. I would probably have things in common with the people I was playing with. In this area it's not uncommon at a C tier to have 3 or fewer advanced masters. We then have a tendency to get grouped with other small divisions like Jrs, Int. Women, or the bottom card of Intermediates. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with these players or divisions. It's just we don't have a great deal in common outside of the tournament we playing. At a masters tournament you can talk about the aches and pains in your body and have something in common with everyone in the tournament. :D
The cook-out we had after the tournament was a blast. Some of the "underage" players stopped by as well and joked around and made fun of us calling the tournament the AARP Open or the Gerotal (sp?) Invitational.
For anyone under 40 please don't take the comments above the wrong way. No disrespect intended. We'll play with you again at the next tournament and you can show us how you throw 400'+. Just let us play this one by ourselves. :p

I guess it's different down here. We usually have a pretty good turnout for Masters and Adv. Masters. We also have several over-40 who can throw 400+... in fact the adv. masters world distance champ is in our club and plays almost every local tournament :).
I'm glad you guys have as much fun with age differences as we do. Without the constant ribbing between generations, our club wouldn't have as much fun as we do :). Around here I think part of the reason the over-forty crowd enjoys playing so much is the fact that they can and consistently do have a decent-sized division to play in. Hopefully, an event like the one you're proposing can encourage more golfers to attend regularly and increase Masters participation in all events.
Make this thing an annual event and I promise I'll come play as soon as I'm eligible... in 11 years :)

I am interested. So you know there is a tournament here in California in September called "US Masters Championship" it is Sept. 12-14, 3 days of disc golf at La Mirada disc golf course. We could use more support especially from 400 ft. throwing Adv. Am. Masters to help make it a real Masters Championship!
