Now that I think about it.... the last two water holes are lefty friendly if the usual headwind is present. All of the righties have to worry about turning their discs over and having them end up wet. Lefties can just step up, throw flat, and the wind will roll their discs over onto shore. Seems simple to me :D

kadiddlhopper
Jan 11 2008, 07:55 AM
5th! Actually 9, 10, and 11 are all extremely difficult for a lefty, even the short tees. "Just try and take a 3" no chit vern...what do you think we were trying to do? The average RH open player probably is -1 to -2 on those 3 holes both pads combined. The average LH open player is probably E to +2. After 4 rnds thats handing over between 4 to 16 strokes. And Robert just because someone has played a good rnd somewhere does not justify competing in a tournament, just as if one were to have a bad rnd does not justify giving up the game. There is some sensible middle ground in there. And yes Schweb the course should have a reverse layout...ever look back down 18, now thats a sweet hole.

10 the "roll" will take them well left and short of the basket where they will then be approaching through trees in head/crosswind to a VERY fast green that slopes severely to water (righties throw a stable hyzer), 11 the "roll" can take them OB short before the peninsula juts out near the basket or in bounds well short. check out the throw from the drop zone or 100-150ft short of the basket on 11 for a lefty in a headwind. fun times (righties throw a stable hyzer harder). 9 is at least better than it used to be, but lefties cant go for it off the tee.

One thing that may help lefties this year is the drought in this area. The last time I played there was about 100 feet of land to the right of hole 11's basket. This should give a much larger landing area for all.
Another note we currently have about 20 entries. I will be posting the list later this week. With school starting back I have been a little busy since I work in education.

good point Mike.
I played out there a few weeks ago and yanked my tee shot right of 11's basket and had a jump putt.
That is how much land is over there right now.
Also on 10 the water is just barely reaching the tall weeds in what was the water - this is hands down the easiest this course has ever and probably will ever play.

first of all, a nights rain isn't gonna help, second, "A course is a course of course" it doesn't matter if your lefty or righty its still golf everywhere you go! you shouldn't duck courses because they are lefty or righty friendly. every course has its variety of shot selections and ways of attacking the holes. 3rd for Clizzark, the answer is a resounding NO! because unlike the last 2 years I will be in the ring of fire..lol. all this crying about "boo hoo hoo, I am lefty so I can not play at this course or that course." WHATEVER!!! as Hoffy said you should aquire the proper shot selections for these kind of moments.. like learning how to throw side arm with the same arm you drive with for one thing.. also you may wanna explore your options, and develope. not give up because you are unwilling to learn.
if I would have refused to learn all the shots I have in my bag
I wouldn't be playing anywhere but Kentwood.. its part of the game guys and girls!!! you have to grow in your game or you will never meet your victorious expectations.. that sux people would actually make excuses not to play such a beautiful course and even attempt to make the course out as the reason.. shut up and learn to throw!!!..lol. See ya in the trenches!

Chris: When the rain falls around Harris lake the Park opens flood gates from small creeks and other small ponds in the park. The lake cools the tower. One night of rain( about 8 hours) will bring the lake level way up. Not full but close.

well my stubborn friend, I have a few animals for you too.. first the Bull which you sleep in, and it represents your stubborness..lol. and the Shrew for your timid approach to your disc golf game. and maybe a bit of donkey yourself..for not understanding what I said. I read perfectly fine, and I understand completely what was said, you don't want to expand and move foward, but rather backwards and sideways like a snake in his hole..lol. and the funny thing is your lil hole is on "Kent Rock" and your still afraid to step up, you would rather step down. I kind of understand your veiw, but I just don't agree with it. and if you don't win advanced or play well, how will that effect your USDGC mental game? will it be worse, will you be crushed inside? maybe not outside, but in.
I love palyin with you Cart, I hate to lose you to your own mind. you are a pro, and make to much of the mental side of things. you got game, and no matter what division you play in, there you are!

whatever Cart lol. Good luck. I'll still be your friend, just like I am with Brandon Bailey.."The Lifer". I love him, he's from my old school. just never wants to move up. My fortune in advanced was a learning stage, I had one guy to beat basically for the first year and a half I played, then he moved away, and I played an extra year because of waiting for my shot at the worlds without a crick in my neck... the PDGA
would not allow me to play as an Advanced player in the pro division, for minimal compensation for my efforts to avoid slaying advanced players. I knew I wanted to move up but it became a game. so I reacted accordingly.. and made the transition just as I said I would, I never claimed I wasn't turning pro.
and also .. once I took my pro card, I never looked back. it was never even an option in my mind. one thing mattered.."GETTING BETTER" with better players.
one more note.. I think your last post brings up a good point...
the secret to good golf is being comfortable and not being to serious. you play your best when you are not really thinking at all, and just let your body react, according to numberous golf books. thats why they say practice as you play, and play as you practice. all that time spent is for the 2 seconds you forget everything and just do it. you play better when you are having fun playing..when you go back to advanced, you will still be the same guy Cart, you will be just as serious with the Ams, as you are the Pro's, and its gonna be even harder for you to concentrate..at least the pros give you a chance.
But.. these are things you need to learn for yourself. and I personally can't wait to hear the stories when you come back to us commrad.
this is my last post on the matter.. we can talk at [profanity removed]!!!
Peace.

I have a few paypals that came in after 5 today that should be in provided no other paypals come in and that no other people have mailed checks.
Wait list will be posted online as well. Once we fill I will post instructions to get on the waitlist.

Rock i will probably play a mix of am and open this year and play open for good after Am worlds. Last year was my year for the N.C. Am Title and Noble beat me fair and square. there is not much left for me as an am so i feel it is almost time for me to make that jump and see what this game is really about

This just in from the AP wire:
Eastern NC disc golfer Scott Faison has just announced that he will not be playing in this years Buckhorn Open. When asked about the decision to withdraw from this event, he said "it was a tough one but some other issues come first." Further questions revealed that there was a potential schedule conflict that would interfere with him being able to attend. "One of my primary sponsors was not able to get me out of some prior engagements that are very important to our team. To me, in the big picture, the Faison team comes first". Scott also commented on how much he was looking forward to playing this course and trying to atone himself for last years epic meltdown. "It was really frustrating to be tied for the lead after the first round and then watch myself not only drop from contention, but to eventually drop from cashing. That was one of the hardest lessons I have learned on the course". Even though the season started rough, Scott did manage to end it on some high notes with solid performances at the Fall Disc Golf Classic and One Moe. "I was hoping to build from some of the success I had at the end of 2007 and take it into 2008. I guess my seasonal debut will have to wait". Faison still plans on being at the Coastal Plains Winter Open two weeks after Buckhorn and is excited about playing after returning from the Daytona 500.
He was also asked if he was going to come up any for the event he mentioned he had planned on playing Friday but that too has changed. "Originally I was going to practice Friday then play the event. Even after I saw that I was not going to be able to play, I had thought about just playing some on Friday since I will be in Raleigh anyway for an appearance at a tire store (Ronnie White's Tire and Towing). All that has changed now since a very dear and personal friend of mine is going through a hard time. His child who is less than a year old was just diagnosed with a brain tumor. I have decided that I would rather spend that time with him in his time of need than focus on my personal endeavors. There are more important things than throwing plastic at trees" Scott closed by wishing all the best of luck to all the competitors. "This is a great event on a great course. Scott Anderson and RADL run a terrific show at the Horn. I hope I will get the chance to play in this tournament again in the future"
Scott said that any questions asked will be answered and if the need arises, a section in the players area of the discussion board can be created to handle those inquiries.

You can never have it all at Buckhorn. looks like the premilinary forecast is calling for winds sustained at 17mph w/ gust reaching as high as 30mph. hey at least it won't be sleating :D
One of my classic Buckhorn Stories was 2 years ago hole 10 long. strong head wind. Messiah's on the box throws a strong hyzer right at the basket. the wind gusts catching the disc turning it over then the nose comes up and the disc actually is now travleing backwards. it almost blows it back to the bank of hole 9 but alas it did not make it to dry land. Splash. Messiah looks back at the group and says man that was a tsunami (i guess that is a stable disc by the confused look on his face) :D

Whats the ring of fire?
A putting game designed to keep players out of the tournament directors hair while scares and awards are figured
A Basket is placed in an open area with plenty of putting room. A few rings are painted on the ground around the basket. Every one sets up on the specified ring. The MC says 3...2...1 go. everyone puts! If yours stays in you move back to the next ring. This goes on until 1 person is left. The last person wins the prize for that round. In the past there are 10 or more rounds with various prizes. The final round is a basket.
My personal strategy has been get some one else to pay for your entry. Make the deal that you will give them every prize that you win.
Accept if you win the basket. So far I am the two time champ - looking for this years sponsor ;)
Its fun, you should get in this year.

And although the wind made for an interesting day, overall it was by far one of the best events I've attended in quite a while. 4 groups of great guys helped the fact that I didn't play well. After this weekend I am trully sorry that I've missed this event all these years. A very challenging course that makes you play smart golf. It will now become a must every year.
Huge thanks also go out to my good friends Kirk and Jennifer for once again providing a welcome home to stay at. Overall the folks in Raleigh get 5 stars for a memorable weekend.

Great job Scott, Mike and Stick, and Park crew. This was a awsome tnmt. Congrats to Bigg Wigg on his Victory. Had a great time with a great group. Was proud of my only backhand on hole 11 from the longs, that almost parked it at hole 8 somewhat OB. LOL

nice write up schweb, but did you really have to let everyone know the firebird was blue? I mean, come on, I got sponsors that don't need to read that kinda info :D

Sounds like Mcracken and I's drive on hole 11 were about the same. I think my shot from 11s box was closer to hole 8, than my drive on hole 8s box. 168gm T-bird, searching for bass instead of birdies. It was a confused disc, or maybe just the thrower throwing unthumber. LOL
Mini Thumber, a pretty good rec player :p

very cool footage - I still can't believe that my shot was OB and I can't believe that a skip thumber of the water was closer than mine :D

how was your shot OB on that MTL? ... looks like you put it close... and a skip thumber off the water... AWESOME! I will def. be trying that one out soon!
MTL21676
Feb 13 2008, 10:38 AM
it was OB by about 3 feet.
The wind slammed it (as you can see in the video) pretty quick.
I was in shock. When I released it I thought it was perfect and it look perfect for about 95% of the flight.

So I should have walked with the lead card second round....I did get a round in at the Tarheel course though. Congrats to all the winners and though I wish I was able to play the tournament, I did manage to get home without spending $1000 on getting home with gas in a disel truck.

Video removed...DAm....I hate it the way work always interferes with my activities :-) I hope someone posts a new link so I can personally see this Babe Ruth-esque calling the homerun/skip thumber off the water.
Well that is certainly something to be proud of. I wonder if there is anyone else in the world who could do that? My guess is no.

I don't think actually skipping the disc off the water was the crazy part. It would be just like throwing any type of skip thumber shot.
What made it nuts was he parked it.
That is what was so impressive to me.

Schweb... i have to ask more about this shot... was this on the 17th hole in the final round? if so was it a scenario of knowing you have enough strokes to have fun or is it a high enough percentage of a shot where you didnt have to worry either way?
Just curious and think its great you are still having fun out there either way!!

Many of us saw Stokely call the skip off the water and park it on hole 17 (~240) in the Finals of Cincy Worlds in 1998.

even lowly me has done it at loriella. the thumber and the tomahawk both skip off the water well when thrown at the right angle. the difference between schweb, stokely and i (well, one difference) is that they could most likely replicate their shots.

it is pretty wierd looking when the green algea (msp) freezes. i remember last year i went for it fro the shorts on 17 and threw a bad shot. ti hyzered a little early and i started waiving good bye to it but when it hit the water it was ice got a nice skip right over to the bank. i was pleasently surprised.

Feb 13 2008, 06:31 PM
yeah you can call it that.
I'm glad it wasn't on film actually. I played the whole hole with that blue firebird. HAving me on film holing a shot with a blue disc could look really bad.
I honestly think that is the first time I've ever completeled a hole with only disc that I didn't ace or didn't tap in for 2.
