What discs released in the last year have made the most impact on your game?
Before I write up a poll I just want to get a good list of what the choices should be. I imagine the Destroyer is going to get a lot of votes. I'm going to personally say the Rogue because it was a winter '06-'07 release and it is now my primary distance driver.

I believe the Turbo-Putt introduced in 2007 had the most impact on the game even though few threw it for competition because it triggered the disc tech standards review that will now impact disc designs for a long time to come.

Much like the Rogue, the SS avenger was released late in the year. It has become an important utility disc for me, slowly taking over the XL's position for roller/turnover/helix shots.

The first flight Shockwaves have been the disc that impacted my game the most this year. Having a straight midrange in high end plastic that is dependable and I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for me has been huge.

Definitely the Destroyer as it was (still is?) all the rage back when it came out, including eBay bidding wars that allowed people who bought one for $35 or so to get triple or better than that in a couple of weeks.
Turbo Putt is an interesting nomination (honorable mention?) as it did start the tech standard review.
Prediction for 2008 - Re-release of the San Marino Roc.

You know...my vote would have to go to the Avenger SS.
The best out of the box roller I have ever used(And I have tried a lot of them). It's also an easy to control turn over disc. This is definitely a great disc to have in your bag.

Dec 19 2007, 02:58 PM
My vote goes to the Cro - similar flight path to the Roc with less glide and more ballistic properties (less mass in the flight plate). These characteristics make it (for me) the easiest straight to hyzer mid to throw consistently accurately. Plus, the soft star plastic is freakin' awesome - great in all weather, durable, easier to grip and rip

I don't know if it came out in 07 (don't think so) but the squall has made a huge difference in my game. It is my go to disc from 250-325.
The Destroyer takes a lot of power to get it going and it isn't as hss as I would like - in the star plastic anyway.
Turbo putt is interesting, probably the biggest impact disc for the sport this year.
The shockwave would get my vote as overall biggest impact on my game.

I'm also trying out the shockwaves. I'm really liking the flat not 1st runs. Don't know if it will stay. I'm getting a Star Whippet to try out that will compete with it.

I'd have to agree with Chuck, there will always be new plastic (destroyers, surge, etc.) but how many will stick around (i.e. Rocs, Teebird, XL, Firebird)? Who remembers the fervor over Valks and how many people still throw them today, not too many :o
The impact made by the Turbo will be around for a while...other than that, I think that the 1080 Radius is a disc with some staying power that can survive the hype/fad phase.
PS - Dimple technology has been around forever...

Distance /= golf IMO and I guess I'm biased about the valks; I just haven't seen any valks around in a few years (I read on a couple websites "still one of the most popular molds" - oops!). I still don't think they've lived up to the early "hype" of a few years ago - you don't see many of them in the bag of Innova players (besides the Protos which were very different discs) like you see Teebirds and Firebirds which are even older molds.

Opinion polls tend to be on the subjective side...anyway, if Lightning made the Destroyer it would still be in crappy plastic, so I would not buy it.
I'm sure the bandwagon is already so full its dragging its axle, but I've got to give a nod to the Destroyer. It is a great distance disc considering speed, glide, and predictability. That being said, I only get to throw it a couple times a round, so I can't really say its helped my game in a tangible way. The Buzz SS has made a bigger impact for me this year, but I'm not sure if that counts totally as a new disc. It flies on the same lines at 200-260 as the Buzz flies at 300-350. It also goes farther downhill/downwind. This disc has saved me some strokes fo sho.

It's like dimple technology. I guarantee if INNOVA or Discraft put dimples on their disc the public would eat it up and everyone would consider them geniuses simply because the brand is INNOVA or Discraft.
I've met too many people afraid to try new things simply because of a company name. I remember this one tournament in the fall, I was in a group with this one dude who saw I had some Diablo DT's in my bag. He acted smug and patronizing saying "You actually throw dimpled discs?" I responded yeah, and if he had a problem with it, to which he he replied "Yeah, I have a BIG problem with it!" and so I asked why and he didnt even answer. Then I asked him, if INNOVA or Discraft came out with Dimple Technology would he throw it and he actually responded "Yeah."
Needless to say I had the biggest WTF look on my face. Now, this is not a bash against INNOVA or Discraft because they make EXCELLENT discs. TeeBird, Buzzz, Cro, Orc, Surge to name a few, They were the companies I started throwing first and I highly recommend starting with those companies. Every new player I meet I tell them to buy either a TeeBird, Leopard or TL and an Aviar as their first disc. But because these two companies have been around longer and were able to snatch up the better players, the average joe feels a sense of obligation to throw them in order to fit in. I couldnt tell you how many times I've had to deal with put downs and people laughing in my face because I throw Gateway, but take those same discs and slap INNOVA or Discraft on the hotstamp they'll eat it up.
It should be about feel and comfortability with the disc, but instead has de-evolved into a brand issue. Shame really.

This was true 5 years ago, but not now. Gateway has enough successful players and discs to hold their head up. Third best isn't bad...you get all the rebel type players who don't want to be as mainstream as the big guys (innova and discraft).

How does Gateway or Quest's premium plastic compare to Innova or Discraft as far as durability?
For me, if they don't have a Z or Champion equivalent, then it is not worth it, but I have only thrown their DX equivalent (Raging Inferno DT, Inferno, and Diablo DT). I hit a tree with the Raging Inferno, and it took the biggest chunk out the disc that I have ever seen. I still throw the other 2 in the field and they are right up there with Destroyers, Wraiths, and Surges, but it is not worth it for me to put them in my bag because of the durability.

Polls like this make me laugh...this is nothing but a "Disc X improved my game"....nothing wrong with that I guess, its just so subjective. I guess units sold would be a better way, but even then its just a popu;arity contest.
If lightning made the Destroyer, would you all throw them?
Poor marketing...
How does Gateway or Quest's premium plastic compare to Innova or Discraft as far as durability?

Not sure about Quest but Gateway's E plastic is just as durable as Champ/Z

If you consider every variation of plastic that Gateway has written "E" on the back of, then they are nowhere near as durable as champion or Z. Maybe 1 out of 5 "E" plastic discs are made of enough premium plastic to compare to the average Z or champion. The other 4 would be comparable to Star/ESP at best, pro/x/dx at worst.
Also, it seems that Quest is molding more and more of Gateway's drivers. Right now their plastic does not hold up to the industry standard for drivers. That said, they are a huge injection company and premium DG plastic is not necessarily any more expensive than crappy DG plastic, so I expect Quest to figure out how to make better discs with more experience.

i agree--I have tried all the newest drivers from gateway and quest and none are durable, except maybe the early spirits.

The earlier runs from Quest were very durable because I have hit several tress and rocks and they didnt scuff, but the current runs are real flimsy and you could probably slice it with your fingernail. This one Raging Inferno I have has hit everything with 100% force, but still in great condition. I've been throwing it almost a year, and it's still very stable.

Um I pretty sure I said Gateway's E. All Sabres, Blazes, Spirits,Illusions, Speed demons, Elements, Element-Xs, and wizards come in the good stuff only not the crap Quest makes. I would say the plastic those molds are made in are better than Champ/Z.
The only molds that were in the crap called E were Quest discs and the Diablo. I think the rage may have been made in other stuff they labeled as E but it wasn't too bad about 85% as good as normal E.

didn't mean to imply quest ever made spirits. but it drives the point home, huh?

Ok...you're either seriously biased or I suspect that you get to pick out the good stuff and are not considering all of the crap sent out to retailers. I have had E spirits that tacoed, an E Sabre that lost any stability it had after about 3 hits, and my Gateway sponsered friend tells me that the "baby blue illusions" get really flippy after a couple of good hits and thats why they are good distance discs. I have also had E element x's that were like KC pro plastic and a glow E Wizard that tacoed and folded the plastic permanently. The only good E discs I've seen were mostly or totally transparent. The rest, like I said earlier, are like star or pro plastic at best.

I don't consider myself bias, and I've got tons of different runs of quality Gateway plastic.

I'm not at all trying to say that Gateway does not make quality plastic. What I'm saying is a lot of Gateway's E plastic does not compare in durability to your average Champion and Z plastics. They have made plastic that compares, but because of many factors inherent to trial and error injection molding they have not made the majority of their E discs in pure Champion/Z style plastic. This probably has most to do with the fact that they have produced and sold far fewer discs than Innova or Discraft, but it is true nonetheless. Once again, I am still a fan of Gateway and I think that someday they will compare more to the big boys in production and sales (especially with Quest's help).

Pretty sure all the discs I mentioned are in good plastic because I have a box of them in my car. Anyway I don't get to pick just tell Justin to send me 3 E Sabres, 3 spirits, etc. and they are all good.
I'm pretty sure the 1st run of baby blues were flippy to start out with and the 2nd run I throw is holding up well and is still overstable. I have a disc that I have had for over three years in my bag that is still great and 4 more I have had for two years and none of them are beat to h*ll.
