Andrew and I drove by Reed and tried to drive throught BlackHawk.

Reed is a total disaster. It looks like every tree is broken.

Blackhawk is both a disaster area and now flooded as well.

This is going to take a lot of work and time to get these courses back in shape.

We are the TDSA, so it will be done..

I am headed by Riverside on the way home, we have a mini there this Sunday.

By the way. they re-scheduled the Toy Run for that day so everyone should get there early, I think by noon if possible. Otherwise parking may be a real problem..

Eveybody be careful.....

McClure and Dovillio are disaster areas. We played Mohawk on Sunday and it was a real experience. Tree limbs falling everywhere some whole trees. It was amazing seeing and hearing all of it coming down.
We only had one close call other than that it was okay.

Here in Owasso it looks like every where else, total destruction, looks like a huge bomb went off. I just got power back on at work at 11:00 today. We were lucky at home and only went with out power for about 12 hours and it came back on yesterday. At least I din't have to sleep by the fire place again.
And We HAVE cable TV. :D

I cant even imagine how black / red must look.
I hope I have power at home tonight, but I'm not expecting to.
its been out since about 6am Monday morning.
I did the reading by candlelight thing last night. I don't want to do that again, Luckily my office has power, internet and couches. I might be staying here tonight.

What are roads like? It looks like I 44 is ok, but what about 169 and 75? I prefer one of those as opposed to the 'pike, but if the Interstate is in better shape...

thanks! Best of luck to TDSA with getting everything back into shape. Let's hope this is the last one like this.

I saw a couple of bent baskets and #14 basket is destroyed.
I would put a conservitive estimate of about a year before if could be playable again and that would be with a lot of volunteer help over the entire time. There is so much downed lumber that it can't be drug off to the sides of the fairways. If it were, some holes would be lined the entire length 4ft high or more. It will have to be cut up and hauled out.
If we were to do it right, we might be able to raise some funds to cover clean up by selling some fire wood. We could stock pile it around the course and haul it out as we can.

Any way we do it though is going to take everyone's help and a real long time. :(

The GTO is in Wayne's hands but as for what courses will be used, I have no idea. All of the courses have been damaged, some more than others. I would think that McClure, Dovillio, Hunter and Red Hawk would be ready by that time.

It is near impossible to make any kind of assesment until we can see what the city will do. As for Balck Hawk, I'm afraid it will fall on us for the 1st 6 months and the city may be able to help with some of it after that.

I know we can get it done and back in shape it will just be a very, very, long process.

I'm sure the upcoming months will offer a lot more work days than minis on the monthly schedules.

Andrew and I walked through Blackhawk today.

I agree overall with Dave's assessment. Some of the holes are really bad.

Holes 1 and 2 need some work but not bad.

Hole 3, major work. Trees are down the entire length.

Hole 4, moderate damage, most is by the path near hole 3, but also further down the fairway.

Hole 5, not that bad really.

Hole 6, total disaster area, one of the two worst.

Hole 7, the big tree left of the basket is half down. This is one of the biggest trees dimension wise.

Holes 8 through 10 are not bad except the big tree on 10 is 1/2 broken and bending towards the pond.

Hole 11, pretty bad, but not a long hole.

Hole 12, tee pad and by the basket needs work.

Hole 13 is terrible, trees are down everywhere. This is where I was seriously disoriented it is so bad. I had a hard time finding the basket!!

Hole 14, Moose Knuckle, pretty bad the entire length...getting worse as you move closer to the basket.

Hole 15 is really bad.

Hole 16 is really bad, actually as are 17 and 18.

The bright spot to me is 90% of the debris is smaller, the downside is it is everywhere . There aren't that many huge trees down, just a lot of stuff the size of your wrist maybe.

I think the key is having a set plan on what to do with the debris. I like the idea of cutting firewood. I also think a chipper would do wonders, mulch is better than what is there now.

Or making areas where we can throw this stuff that is out of the way.

It is going to take work but I think it is pretty doable. I bet after 2 or 3 solid weekends we will be surprised at our progress...

Plans are being laid out so that Mohawk can be brought back better than it was before.

It will take some time, lots of organization and some cooperation from the city. I would suspect that there will be many work days to choose from in the near future. I wouldn't expect a huge crew all the time, we just need to have people work when they can.

I guess I should have asked Santa for a chainsaw this year, looks like I'm going to need one.

The upside is we should have LOTS and LOTS of free fire wood available to our club members.

All forms of power tools will be needed.

I did a little research last night on self powered chippers..

Does anyone know about these, any access???

A chipper would help a ton...

Some of those can handle up to a 6" log..... (Save your comments FurDog)

Also Time to see if any business might consider
some sort of donation of $$$'s or Equipment,
If not a discount on the equipment rental...
Since we are a non-profit,
Can we issue them a receipt for their donation.

No.
The club is not non-profit. They are a not for profit corporation. We do not have non-profit status for tax free donations.

regardless, we will get it done. ;)

but as far as clean up goes
i am willing to come out when ever the club is ready to cut up haul off what ever needs to happen
and i think
we should take the wood that can be used for benches
the right saw would cut it up
so keep us posted i know we can clean up this mess it is just going to take all of us working are ace's off
o and renting a wood chipper is really something we should do!

Martin_Norris
Dec 27 2007, 07:30 PM
We can be reasonably sure, that if the wood is dragged to a spot where the parks people can find it, that they will use their wood chipper free of charge and save us that expense.
ALL work will have to be coordinated with the relevant park authority before we can proceed.
That means that we will have to keep in contact with the City, County and Public works departments relevant to what ever park we are helping with.
Be patient please, you all know that it will take a little while for the wheels of city and county government to grind around. The last thing we need to do is upset our relationship with anybody we have a course in common with.

All TDs need to be in touch with their contact person and then report what, when and where so we can coordinate efforts in a positive manner.

you can see around town that this will take the city forever to take care of
the city is still trying to firgure out ohow to make money out of all this disaster not clean up, restore power, direct traffic ....

I was driving thru Dovillio yesterday am to survey the damage and I saw an end loader scooting limbs around on the fairway of hole 3 and a big dump truck driving around. Hopefully they made some progress in the park through the day.

I've cleared a few more holes off at Hunter, and it is in reasonably good shape now. The rough is a little bit rougher now with the piles of limbs that I dragged to the side. A friend with a chainsaw helped me on hole 8, but it still needs some professional-type equipment to clear it completely.

I spent a little over an hour on hole 15 at Hunter on Saturday after I finished my morning round of golf, and during that time about a dozen casual weekend golfers played thru. The soft-wooded elm tree right in front of the basket was stripped of about 60% of its limbs, and after cutting them down to dragging size I had a huge plile of limbs to drag off. Some of them offered their thanks, belched, and dropped a beer can on the fairway, but no one offered a hand to drag a limb or two aside.

hey local disc golfers! i have a great contact for some hired help on the courses.these guys have the right equipment to do this work safly and quickly and there rates are very reasonable. they are currently storing therir heavy equipment at my place.
id like to put this to a vote of the board memmbers.

Who are these guys?....."The Travelers?".... ;)

There might be some legal implications with the city if you bring in a private group that is getting paid to work on city land. Non-paid volunteers is one thing but it sounds like you're trying to bring in a private company for hire to have them work on city land without the approval of the city.

I don't see a problem with the club renting some equipment for a weekend or two to help us do it quicker but hiring a company to do it for us sounds expensive and the club would be responsible to the city for what they do with or without the city's approval. :(

Whether we get what we pay for would probably vary from one opinion to another also.

Anybody can show up and give an estimate but whether they show up and follow through is another thing.

Jan 04 2008, 10:35 PM
rates are 150.00/hr for two arborist with a boom truck and a grappler capable of lifting 4 tons. i have no idea what rental cost are. when these men labor they are skilled and safe.they have 10 chain saws so that they dont have down time billed to customer. we spent months and money to install these courses the parks department is overwelmed with thier work load i doubt there would be any complaints about the club hiring able bodied assistance.

I was sadened, then Amazed.. amazed that our club, with the Taylors had done so much in so little time, and this has saved us hundreds of hours... I dont know when our crew will get out there, but we will... I am also glad we have been blessed that noone has been seriously injured. (Moose) wildlife doesnt count. :DReally , just look up and around you while you all are working out there or anywhere there is or has been a tree.

I thought I would submit an update to the course work being done.

I drove by Mack Taylor last Thursday and it looks better. The park entrances were blocked. There are huge piles of mulch here and there. This one is close to playable.

I drove by Dovillio today and the clean-up crew was on site. I spoke to one of the workers and he said they should be through today. I question that but they are close. All of the debris has been piled into the drainage ditches next tot he road. The city contractor is to pick up the debris..

On a side note, I heard they are opening Chandler for a disposal site. I am not sure when it will be open but hopefully the course will be open then as well. I have heard mid-February as the target date but with demand for a new disposal site maybe they will re-open sooner...
