I don't know what's going on with Texas 10, and no, HOTT was not created as a substitute.
Three of the HOTT events have been around for 9 or more years (17 years for COTO).
This tour came about through a combination of existing event support, requests for events at certain venues, requests for one-day events in our area, and mine & MJ's passion to grow this sport....it's that simple.
We are very excited about what's in store for Texas next year!
All year....at every event & on-line in between.....we will be raising money for both EDGE and Breast Cancer Awareness.
Not only will we will have CFR discs available all year that will benefit these charities, there will be other fundraisers as well at each tournament that will raise money too.
Details, details..everything will be announced in detail soon.
For now, mark your calendars& prepare for an awesome final at Circle R!

Soon, you will be able to register, on-line, directly, with TeamJustice for all 8 of the qualifiers!
You must play in 4 qualifiers (same division) before you can sign up for the final. Sign ups for the final will be open to everyone one week after the last qualifier (Oktoberfest). Only players that play in 4 qualifiers will be in the Final Bonus.

Let me clarify.......
Once a player has played in 4 qualifying events, they may sign up for the HOTT Final. The final will open to non-qualifying players one week after Oktoberfest.
Anyone who qualifies as 'official' HOTT Staff /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif :D, will get an event credit.

2. Staff spots will be limited according to venue.

May 24 McDade same weekend as S TX Shootout (Beeville)
Aug 9 Kingwood same weekend as Shule School (Ingleside)
Sept 6 Spring Valley same weekend as HOTT Mystery (who knows)
Oct 4 1st Colony same weekend as HOTT Octoberfest ( Round Rock)
November 8 TC Jester same weekend as HOTT Lewisville Open
Is this a problem for anyone?

I know lets do like before.
Have a 2 tournaments every weekend....that way NO-ONE will have a good turnout  And I don't want to hear " we had a good turnout"
CAUSE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BIGGER IF ANOTHER EVENT WAS GOING ON!!
What is it going to take to make people understand this.....
You have waves of T.D's that run events for 4 or 5 years and get burned out cause of poor attendance....then another wave of T.D'S come along and do it again....results poor attendance for all Texas events and poor attendance = NO NT!
Instead of running a tournament...run some minis to promote local involvement, contact your churches / schools and do demonstrations. But going up against another towns tournament is not the answer. The city wants to know what kind of outside revenue will your tournament bring to the city?
How many people attending you event from outside the hosting city?
Just lie to your city officials : cause telling them the true: no outside money will come of the event and will not get you very much city involvement or outside the city sponsorship.
Gary Duke can do a great job, if all the Texas Disc Golf Promoters (or whatever you want to call yourselves, I call yah short time money grabbing off the backs of disc golfers) work with him.
I may not be the state coordinator..which I a sure these Disc Golf Promoters would love me as the coordinator. But I will be the first golfer to voice my opinion on an new event that goes up against ANY long running event.
I'll step off the soap box now

Vinnie, these guys are targeting a different market than your usual tournament player, so the likelyhood that they would take away from another event out of town is slim.
I posted the following on HFDS board when responding to same post there:
Posted on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 11:48 am:

IMO, most of the conflicts are with events that are not generally attending by your target market.
I am sure that those of us who are "DIE-HARD" Moody's fans will opt out for RRS and Oktoberfest both. But those are two day camping events, and not heavily attended by H-town players.
Think you shouldn't have any real issues with your events as presented.

Those of us who go "out of town" regularly, will continue to do so, and we need to let these guys generate some new interest in the HOUSTON area, God knows we need it.

Mar 15 - No other open weekend in Mar
World dubs weekend is a possibility
Aug 9 - Crowley is 215 miles from Kingwood
I don't see that anyone from Houston area made the trip last year
Sep 6 - ?? location from Spring Valley?
We both want the only open date in Sept
Oct 4 - Red Rock
I will recommend Oct 25th
Nov 8 Circle R (the final)
I will recommend Nov 15
What other tourneys are going to turn up this year?
March, April, July, Aug and Sept are all full

What calander. I thought everything went through Gary and he had the final say on this. When I first saw both sets of events, I was excited trying to figure out which ones I could make over in Houston after scheduling the ones here in central Texas.
I just figured they had been sent to Gary already and he had worked on them, but then I didn't find anything on the LSDGA website.
Where is the calander that you are referring to that has other tournaments listed or are you going by the dates from last year?
I think from reading MM1's first post about the conflicts, he was asking about what other tourneys were out there and he was more than willing to try and move the Houston Tourneys so they wouldn't conflict. I think that is a STAND UP TD to try and do so here on the MB.
With my inlaws in The Woodlands, I am planning on playing McDade and Spring valley this year and others if they work into my schedule.
If there is a tourney calander out there already, please let us know so others can start setting ours schedules. All I have so far are what is listed on the PDGA tour site and the ones listed in Houston and HOTT.

We have worked very closely with the state coordinator in developing this schedule, and all our dates have been approved by him.
Two of the dates you refer to are established tournaments (The 10th Annual Red Rock Show & The 10th Annual Oktoberfest.both located in Red Rock, Texas.&..both have been around 10 years for a reason).
The HOTT final will be in Wimberley (Circle R) and is an A-tier (already submitted to and approved by Mr. Gentry).
I hope the Houston tour does well next year.

The mind-set:An event 200 miles away from my event will not be affected, IS WRONG. No-one will travel to an event if one is going on in their own back yard. The best compliment a T.D./ course can get is a player traveling those 200 miles. If all your players are local....then what you are doing is having a sanctioned mini.

I don't think this is such a big deal. I personally don't think either TD, or any TD for that matter needs to consult another TD for scheduling a C tier. I am not sure about the official rules.
Whether we like it or not, disc golf in Texas the last few years has become regional. A few travel outside their region for select events, but for the most part, people stay close to home. This apparent desire not to travel is best served by people putting on regional tournaments, without regard to what other regions are doing. Therefore, I am super thankful for what Mitch and Patty are doing, and would feel the same about Michael if I were in Houston. Hell, I want the local clubs to fill up all the open dates, and when I say open dates, I mean when there is not a tournament in Waco, Temple, Gonzales or the the Austin or SA metro areas.
The bottom line: very few travel these days, and setting up a statewide tournament structure to lure travelers is pointless and counterproductive. People want to play close to home.

Dec 13 2007, 10:08 AM
It almost sounds like Vinnie is advocating the elimination of C-tier events...
Red Rock fills every year
COTO fills every year
Octoberfest fills every year
Gonzales fills every year (so much so that Third Coast ran another event on Sunday this year to meet demand)
All of those are 1 course events - they max out at 90-105 players. There are more than 200 players between Austin and Houston.
Having a competing event 3 hours away will not change the above statements.
As for an A-tier at Circle R - it's probably going to be limited to 144 players and it will fill too.
(And I'm not even considering the TD skills of Team Justice. Count those and the HOTT is a slam dunk success.)

This is where we disagree. In the past, Gary has provided the required protections, designed to prevent a PDGA local event from tempting players away from traveling. It hasn't worked. Very few people travel. For example, take our Austin tournaments of COTO, Waterloo and Outlaws. It's mostly locals, very few travelers. I think the market is speaking: disc golfers, for the most part, don't travel much anymore, even with geographic protections, therefore, the geographic protections are starting to seem unnecessary and counterproductive.

Just a sec! This is no battle. I bow respectfully to the ones that have already given and done so much to the sport we love. I know the dedication and hard work that y'all have put into making Centex dg successful is all about the love of the game. (some would say obsession but they would be spouses) Birdshot has no intention of doing anything but help that continue. Our goal is to get the Greater Houston tournament scene off of life-support and back to growing like it should.
Our mission is to attract new players (and those geographically challenged) into friendly little C tiers so that some day they can grow up and play with the big boys and girls. At our last tourney we had 16 boys and girls under 13. We had over 30 golfers playing their first PGDA event. Believe me, as "fun" as that was, you don't want that at a B Tier!
We foresee that with the amazing growth of our sport in Texas, every tournament will soon fill. Our goal is to get as many new players into the sport as possible to make that happen as soon as possible.
Unless Gary already has one, going forward I would be willing to put together a comprehensive spreadsheet of tournaments and distances to minimize confusion and maximize tournament dates.
We are going to schedule one tournament each month. One of the reasons that we decided on one-day only events was to make it easier to move them away from the established tourneys. Since March, April, July, Aug and Sept are all full (assuming tourneys from the 07 calendar will be run again in 08) that doesn't leave us much choice but to schedule on weekends that are occupied by someone. We tried to avoid weekends that had 07 tourneys that Houstonians have demonstrated that they were willing to travel to. We will continue to do that. I will start a thread in the Houston area. If everyone would post there or email me, I will put it together and post it like the Lonestar calendar on the Birdshot website.

You can not use the 07 schedule as a starting point...The PDGA moved the "A" tiers around so other events had to move as well in 2008...You should work with Mr.Duke to find less conflicting dates...that is what we did...we have already moved 5 of our 9 dates to weekends that had no other PDGA events scheduled...When we did our schedule you had already picked dates that conflicted with long standing events...maybe you should try scheduling your PDGA events with the PDGA ...Mr.Duke is very good at what he does...and I though Vinnie was president :D

hmmmm interesting idea
A year ago today this was posted
I am proposing to all the different regions of Texas to work together and promote their area with Amateur events that lead to a pro/advance event in their area.
All of the regions have very large pools of amateurs and the amateur pool in any sport is bigger than the professional pool. And that is the reason for galleries at other sporting events. The growth of our sport has always been centered on growth of the amateur player and should continue to have a strong push. In conjunction I believe we are at a time where the better skilled player should be exposed to larger named sponsors. And the main driving point for a larger company to entertain the idea of sponsoring anything is exposure to their products. Any sport today sponsored by large companies has exposure through media coverage, galleries and product sales.
These would mean more amateur events than pro/advance events, the pro/advance events would benefit from a small percentage of the amateur retail to wholesale profit generated at the amateur events. These would stimulate the pro/advance player attendance.
I have listed my opinions on the pros and cons. I would like to know from a players view and the T.D.s views.
Pro
Amateur winners are bestowed with self worth by being the highest offered division at the event. (not sharing the lime light with better skilled division winners)
More room in divisions for amateur players at amateur events.(No pros saved spots)
Course flexibility centered around the amateur player.(course would not need to cater to pro skill level of play )
Less preparation by T.D. marking multiple tee boxes.
T.D. could focus on obtaining added to amateur payout and would not have to obtain required added to pro payout.
PRO/Advance events could obtain gallery from the amateur base not offered
Amateur events could obtain gallery/staff from the pro base not offered.
Cons
T.D. logistic agreement to feed a set small percentage (some trust)
Less pro /advance events ( but that could be a good thing)
A agreement with region leaders on place of pro/advance event.(Everyone is proud of their course and believes the best player in the world will play there one day)
T.D.s obtain less profit margin on retail to wholesale (There are better ways to make money for the people out there in it to make money and it should not be on the back of a amateur entries)
This not a science but I hope the leaders of the below regions can take my thoughts and decide on the healthiest path for their areas. I am sure I am leaving out a course and I can not know the inter working of the regions on growth and future plans. So there is plenty of room with in the regions to grow. But bottom line a trust amongst the events to highlight one or two events as pro/advance is the goal.
BUT here it is:
South:
Live Oak
Gonzales
Universal City
Kyle
San Marcus
These guys should run c tiers (am events) with Live Oak becoming a A tier (not necessary a pro\advance only event
Costal
Corpus Christi
Beeville
Victoria
Port Author area
These is a good scenario for a rotating b tier pro/advance event (between Vic and Corpus until growth in the region)
Houston
Many events occur in are heading up their state NT
Austin
Many event occur in area heading up the COTO
Dallas
BB Owens
Carrolton
Lewisville
This region could use more events
Arlington/Fort Worth
Cedar hill
Crowley
Z boas
Veterans
Fritz Park
These region is a toughie with all ready strong mind T.D.s and A tiers events (these IMO should be apart of an rotating Texas NT thing that I think these state needs)
West Texas
Abilene
Lubbock
Amarillo
San Angela
Weatherford
These is a good scenario for a rotating b tier pro/advance event (with a future A tiers)
East Texas
Nachadotoes
Tyler
Athens
These is a good scenario for a rotating b tier pro/advance event until growth in the region
Central
Round Rock
Waco
Temple
Georgetown
These is a good scenario for a rotating b tier pro/advance

Y'all still intend to herd cats?
This bottom up approach of collecting all TD's aspirations and trying to equitably schedule them is UNDOABLE. Just give it up. A much better approach is a top down approach where the state is divided into sensical regions (not what is listed above) and then allot each region one or two exclusive dates, depending on the number of golfers in the region. These dates should be scattered uniformly across the calendar. All other dates are left open to anyone and everyone, and every TD will know that no PDGA protection will be afforded those dates and they are on their own.
To understand just how ineffective this bottom up approach is, look at this thread. Right now, only two areas are represented. Just wait until Third Coast, DFW, Lubbock, East Texas, et al jump in. It's madness.

Manor should be open by the end of February! Weve been waiting a long time for this course to open, and I can assure you, it will be well worth the wait!
That means youll be able to practice the course for several months before the 1st Annual Manor Championship (July 26th, 2008). Not only is the course top notch, the park rocks too. Some extras in the park include fishing ponds, basketball courts, picnic tables, bbq pits, a swimming pool ran by the YMCA (pay to swim) with a special pirate ship pool for the kids, and much more. It really is a great place to take the whole family! Theres something for everyone.

I get too busy to look at the site for a couple of weeks and every thing falls apart.
Just a quick note. I have some time again, passed my finals and can breath now. The schedule will be up on the LSDGA.com site this weekend.
Yes, Vinnie I am upset that there are no free weekends in the fall and that we are once again having to put events against each other, but care is taken to put events that don't normally draw from the same player base on the same weekend.
Already I have 62 events (5 of them A-Tiers or Majors, 21 of them B-Tiers) and 8 holidays to fit into 52 weekends. There is going to be some overlap.
I have not heard from most of the TDs of unsanctioned events so there are about a dozen more that will pop up soon.
I expect to be really close to 100 events this year. I think most of them are going to do very well.
Please take any further discussion to one of the other threads the Lou pointed out, and Good Luck with the HOTT series of events.

I was really hoping to play in this series, but I don't know if I'll be able to go to enough qualifiers. COTO is the same weekend as the NT in Tulsa, Outlaws is the same weekend as the USWDGC's, and Snow Farm is the same weekend as the Southern Nationals Pro Championships (Little Rock this time).

Yeah......COTO hasn't had to go up against a NT so close before (it's had the same weekend for several years now), but I'm not worried about it. I'm excited for the Tulsa guys & gals. They worked hard to get their NT, and I don't think our little 'Super B' will affect them.
Outlaws is not a qualifier for HOTT.
We moved the Snow Farm event to that weekend because it was an open weekend in Texas (one of few) & we didn't want it to conflict with things here.
That leaves you 6 other qualifiers.....you only need 4 to qualify for the Final Bonus.......you got that

8 qualifiers and the final (not a qualifier).
When you play in 4 qualifiers (or staff - staffers get an event credit), you qualify for the Final Bonus payout....which I'm thinking will be pretty juicy. With the Final being an A-tier, there'll be at least another $1500 cash added to the Pro payout.

Dec 21 2007, 12:10 PM
I used to be one of the most traveled players in Texas, but the last couple of years I've really started playing less and less tournaments.
The biggest reasons have been time and money. With the increases in gas prices and tournament entry fees, plus the cost of lodging, I was having a hard time justifying spending thousands of dollars a year to play in 25+ tournaments.
Plus, as others have stated, playing in a two day tournament away from home really puts a strain on getting home early enough on Sunday night to get ready for work on Monday.
___________
With ALL that said --- I am extremely excited about the new regional series popping up in Texas for 2008. Especially the Justice's efforts to pull together HOTT.
I look forward to supporting this series, as it's exactly what I was hoping for in terms of tournament opportunities this year.

All last year, we listened to the golfers in this area talk about what they wanted/needed when it came to local events & tried to address everyone's wants/needs when organizing HOTT. Of course, there's no way we can make everyone happy, but we are definitely gonna crank it up and make it HOTT 'round here!

I can undestand about old 12 being ridiculous because of the trees. So instead of cutting 3-4 trees and making a line, 20+ trees were bulldozed. Creating a new 12 that is a straight uphill shot, wow hard, then 13 which is a "lucky" par 4 and now 14 is a crappy slight dogleg right. I say 13 is a "lucky" par 4 because it doglegs right-downhill. So where ever your tee shot lands, if you hit the gap, it is luck to see how far down the hill you roll/skip. I don't understand how you convinced the city to let you plow through the back part of the park but can't maintain tee boxes. Disc golf has already come a long way. More athleteic people are taking up the "sport" now. I bet you think 400ft thumbers at Texas Teams is cheating too...

I think hole 13 is a very nice hole. It is a good, challenging par 4. SuperGirl (Nicole) had an easy 15 foot putt for par once on that hole (she has played the hole 3 times). Unfortunately she missed the putt. I think she could make a 3 if she could manage to hit the 1st opening in the trees with her sidewinder. It is a difficult 1st shot (if you are trying for a 3), but it is doable (especially for top players). Of course I am not a top player, so I would be very happy with a 4 on that hole.
Thanks.......Rick

I have a few things to announce :)
First of all....
I'm excited to announce the Susan G. Komen for the Cure - Austin Chapter (http://www.komenaustin.org/site/PageServer) as the official HOTT breast cancer awareness charity. We CAN make a difference! Soon we will have 'Texans for Tatas' items for sale on the TeamJustice website and at all The HOTT by Disc Nation events. It is my pleasure to announce that 100% of all net profits from 'Texans for Tatas' t-shirts will go directly to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure!
Next and kinda cool
Millennium Golf Discs has seriously stepped up to the plate for HOTT 2008!
Thanks to Millennium Golf Discs, there will be $75,000 in HOTT Hole-In-One contests this year!!!!

Hi Patty. I'm a little slow, can you confirm that the only advanced division playing the long tees is the MA1 group not including MM1(old people). Basically are Mitch(he's old) and I playing the longs or not?
mitchjustice
Feb 28 2008, 11:18 AM
Correct MA1 will play the longer tees...with all other non-pro divisions (including the old people) playing the shorter tees
