David - The Mash on January 19th will be at the Quail Valley Golf Club facility. It will be one of the courses be planned for TSDGC in April 2008. I think the course you might be referring to is the Community Park course in Missouri City which is a 9-hole one. The Quail Valley setup has never been used before and the first chance we'll get to look at it is on January 19th. The photos I've seen make it look awesome!

Susan - No guarantees that the exact same configuration will be used for States...it should be pretty close though according to Neal. But even when we run on the Tom Bass courses, almost every year there is a tweak or two to the courses that we use. I would say that a good approach towards it would be to keep our options on the layout open until we get a chance to see what it looks like on January 19th.

I'm going to try to hitch up with Neal on Saturday to walk the courses and take a look at them.

Mo City Mash Jan 19 is on the new Texas States Course!!
Great, great piece o property and a Neal Dambra designed "course of pain"!!

You will love this venue!!

Looking at the 08 schedule:

March 15 Bass same weekend as HOTT The RED Rock Show (Red Rock)
May 24 McDade same weekend as S TX Shootout (Beeville)
Aug 9 Kingwood same weekend as Shule School (Ingleside)
Sept 6 Spring Valley same weekend as HOTT Mystery (who knows)
Oct 4 1st Colony same weekend as HOTT Octoberfest ( Round Rock)
November 8 TC Jester same weekend as HOTT Lewisville Open

Is this a problem for anyone?

reply back or pm back asap! We can look at changing some dates but we want to do it early so that people can make plans (I know, how un-disc-golfer-like)

This should only affect a few of you tournament-obsessed types that want to play both series events or for some unknown reason want to escape the gentle balmy warmth of Houston for the harsh arid clime of Centex ;)

but we have to know cuz we plan on submitting our sanctioning paperwork sooooooon (for disc golfers )

So, replay back or pm me asap!!!

March 15 Bass same weekend as HOTT The RED Rock Show (Red Rock - Birdshot should change his date
May 24 McDade same weekend as S TX Shootout (Beeville) - flip a quarter
Aug 9 Kingwood same weekend as Shule School (Ingleside) - Birdshot should change his schedule
Sept 6 Spring Valley same weekend as HOTT Mystery (who knows) - Mitch should change the schedule
Oct 4 1st Colony same weekend as HOTT Octoberfest ( Round Rock)- 1st Colony- why not keep 1st Colony the same weekend that we just played???
November 8 TC Jester same weekend as HOTT Lewisville Open - should be HOTT Final at Circle R and having a C-tier at TC Jester that same weekend wouldnt do anything except cause a low turnout in Houston,Circle R is a blue level course thats a no-brainer.

I'm sure that you guys will work this out,I am real excited about both series!,cool people and courses at both Houston and Austin.

I usually list tournaments on the main page once I know that we're going to be hosting registration for them, that way players at least know what's coming. Once the page has been built and approved by the TD, the link becomes active. Is there something you think I could do different to make this more obvious to the players? Maybe a "registration coming soon" line or something?

As always, feedback is much appreciated! :)

So if there isn't novice will INT and Rec play the shorts? You said above that REC and Novice would play the shorts but also said there probably wouldn't be novice which is why I ask.

I say ADV and Pro play the longs and if you are going to play Int and don't like it play up. The ADV division will be small this year so that would be good.

Jan 19

This event will be held at the Quail Valley Country Club ball golf course. We will have 18 disc golf holes set up for the tournament using the space of approximately 4 ball golf holes. This area is no longer being used by ball golfers. Novice and Recreational Men, all Am Women will play from the short teeboxes. Advanced Grandmaster Men and older and Pro Women will have the choice to play from short or Long teeboxes.

This is a country club golf course, so players will be required to play by the same rules as the ball golfers. ALL players must wear collared, sleeved shirts (no tank tops or sleeveless). Blue jeans (denim) pants or shorts, or unhemmed (cut-off) shorts are not allowed. Also, pull carts are not allowed. You must walk with a bag. Please note the course is not especially difficult to walk and plays at about 6,500 Ft. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
There will be optional breakfast and lunch available on-site in the club house. Menu, pricing, and other details will be emailed to those who register. We encourage you to support the Country Club by having your meal(s) there.

This also will be the site of the 2008 Texas State Disc Golf Championships! Get some practice in at the Birdshot Quail Valley Classic 1!
Directions:
Traveling South on U.S. Highway 59:
Exit Bellfort/Murphy Road. (1st exit after Beltway 8). At the second stop light turn left under U.S. 59. Drive South on Murphy Rd (1092) approximately 6 miles to Cartwright Road, turn left. At the second stop light La Quinta Drive turn right. The Clubhouse is 2 blocks down on the right side. To go to the Golf Pro Shop turn right at stop sign onto El Dorado Boulevard.

Disc golfers,

If you are planning on entering the Birdshot Quail Valley Open, Jan 19 at Quail Valley Country Club (QVCC) http://www.houstonbirdshot.com/. Please read below. This is also the site for the 2008 Texas States Disc Golf Championships in April (www.texasstates.org)

QVCC will prepare lunch for us between rounds. http://www.nealdambra.com/QVC1Menu.png Basically its $10-12 with tax and gratuity. This may be a couple bucks more than you are used to spending for lunch at a disc golf tourney, but you wont have to leave the facility and it is in a very comfortable indoor area called the El Dorado Grill. More importantly, support of QVCC amenities is encouraged and appreciated as they are supporting our sport.

If you plan on eating there please email your menu choices to [email protected] as soon as possible so QVCC can plan the lunch service.

QVCC has a Dress Code for ALL golfers: Basically no cut-offs, no blue jeans, no baggy sweat pants, no t-shirts. Please wear a collared or tailored collar shirt and some decent shorts, pants, or windbreaker/track suit style pants. Hope its not too much hassle...we appreciate your cooperation.

No pull carts (QVCC Rule)...no Golf Cart Rentals (PDGA Ruling)...sorry...we tried...you must walk and carry your bag or have a caddy (dress code applies to caddy also).

Latest course map attached.

Hope to see you next Saturday...

Please read this thread carefully. The only official tournament information comes from me or Tony Bender.

Here is the latest: You are going to love this course! :D
We have closed registration on Titledisc because we have 85 :cool:official entries and don't know what else is in the mail. I will continue to update everyone as things progress.Yep, We are stuck with five on card but very few inexperienced players and the course is designed to really allow people to move during the rounds.

NO ONE HAS BANNED TRIPOD CHAIRS during the tournament. One person asks a question and the next thing you know people are jumping to all kinds of conclusions!! I am bringing mine. Except that we ask that they not be seen in and around the clubhouse. We ask everyone to make a special effort to positively impress the membership of this private, exclusive club that disc golf is a good thing to support on their property. :D All the members will be watching and all the neighbors as we literally play in their back yards. We are there only by their invitation.

Just like the members, no one will be allowed to carry their bags into the clubhouse. (Or set up a barbeque in the parking lot! ) We would love to see everyone enjoying their restaurant for lunch with a fully stocked bar after the tourney. Breakfast will be available.

Lunch! an added bonus. Neal has arranged for the resturant to have lunches ready for those that pre-order!!Lunch menu (http://www.nealdambra.com/QVC1Menu.png) Contact Neal at [email protected] to reserve lunch so there is no waiting when your first round is over.

This is a golf course, it is built to drain. It is not a flood water retention zone like Bass Park. It may be damp but there will be VERY LITTLE, if any, standing water.

This is going to be fun! :D :D

This is an official Birdshot tournament communication:

Yahoo! As of 9:00 am we have 88 officially registered players! :D:D:D:D:D :D

Carts:
YES, there will be carts available for rental. QVCC will have their other course, an executive 18-hole course, open Saturday and most of their carts will be reserved for members but they will reserve about 20 carts maximum for rental for tournament use, caddies and spectators. Rental will be about $20 for the day.

The PDGA does not allow players to use carts for sanctioned events. <font color="red"> Please read the PDGA rules so that you do not suffer the consequences of a rules violation. </font> :o

Tournament Schedule:
Time is precious this time of year so we propose to move things along as fast as we can.
Our planned tournament schedule (before the tournament filled with pre-registrations) was:

7:00 8:00 am Registration and Check-In (If you do not check-in by deadline, you may Lose your entry fee at the discretion of TD)

8:30 am Players' Meeting

9:00 am 1st Round Tee Off

Now that day-of registration is only a matter of <u>checking in</u>, IF conditions allow us to advance the schedule during the day, we will make every attempt to do so. This means that IF everyone shows up early to check in, there is no reason to delay the players' meeting. Also, the course staff or volunteers will shuttle players before the rounds begin to the more distant holes.:cool:How cool is that! That is the ONLY time a tournament player can ride in a cart!!

So IF everyone cooperates, we can have an 8:05 Players' Meeting, reasonable time to warm up, move up the starting time, lunch time, beginning of the second round, and everyone getting back home.

We realize we have people coming from fair distances. We will not advance the check-in schedule but once everyone is checked in we would LIKE TO advance everything else if possible. This means that 8:00 am is a firm deadline!! At 8:01 we will register anyone lucky enough to make it from the wait- list.

We will start taking wait-list names at 7:00 am

Any questions?

Thanks, everyone for making this tournament such a big event!

What about folks who have signed up, coming from out of town and not able to read this board?

Seems like you should keep the schedule published. It is cold in the morning, and this isn't a LONG course, so time isn't that precious, is it?

I'm planning on attending a players meeting at 8:30 per the first "Official" communications above. Thanks for your prompt feedback. This is up to the players, not Birdshot.:)

We offer to start the tournament earlier, not demand. Delaying the start time only makes the organizers job easier. The 30 minutes between the end of registration and the players meeting was intended for the tournament organizers to get the score cards marked. That is no longer necessary. :D

The only "official" published Birdshot schedule states that all times are subject to change. What would be patently wrong would be to change the registration/check-in times when people have committed to driving long distances to attend. That will not happen.

You will notice that there were about 6 qualifiers in the proposal to move up the tournament start time. That is because we have promised, based on previous complaints from players, that we would attempt to start the tournaments as early as possible after registration, because they hated needless delays in starting the tournament, especially when it's cold <u>and</u> the people that have long drives home complained that they have to be on the road all night.

It will be cold, between sunrise and 10:30 the temperature in Houston today has risen exactly 1 degree.

So everyone that can respond, please do. Like Burger King, This is your chance to have it your way.

So is it too late to request four-somes only? :D

Five-somes stink. For your third tournament ever, I think you will find out the hard way what all of the implications are for that decision.

When are the baskets going to be set in place? Most players like to play at least a few holes before getting started in a tournament...

Well, we wanted to prove to the country club that DG was big... :D

This tournament is a unique opportunity to promote DG to a community that may have the power to grant the world a new world class showcase 54 (or more?)hole permanent course.

As for the players, I think everyone is excited about getting on the TXSDGC course AND the return of sanctioned tourneys to Houston.

After this tournament, we plan to cap the tourneys at 72 per 18 holes. Of course, if QVCC becomes permanent with 54 holes thats a lota golf!....... :D :D:D

and also, on our way out sunday we wanted to hit another houston course, which would be the best course to play? thanks in advance

Yeah...I suggest that you consider playing in the Spring Valley Commando Mini on Sunday morning at 10:00 am. It's the best course in Houston!!! Last weekend we had 22 players with 14 in Open! The Ace Pot is small right now as it was just hit the week before last. Cost is only $10 and at least $1 from every entry goes to Texas States. All cash payout for everyone.

Oye, just in over the telegraph:

News Flash!!

Dateline Houston:

A semi-reliable source confirmed today that the other two courses at QVCC will be available for casual play on Saturday.

"The implications are astounding!" gasped a tournament organizer as he struggle but failed to maintain composure

"This goes against the laws of physics, it very well could be the end of the civilization as we know it!", blurted a high placed NASA engineer

"(censored),mayn, ahl jus skip that danggold torneement and tho'at them 36 flags" asserted a drunk bubba walking past

Aye, carumba. so there you have it. If you cain't...ah, cannot get in from the wait list you COULD still play the 36 available holes not involved in the tournament and PRETEND you are a bonafide PDGA competitor. Chuck says there would be no way to prevent those that have paid to play the other courses from playing the tournament course during the lunch break.

This is an official Birdshot informational bulletin:

The club manager at QVCC has informed us that their membership has scheduled an event for Saturday morning, January 19, that will make it very unlikely that any carts will be available for caddies or spectators. :(

Apparently their event has grown bigger than previously planned and the membership has first call on the carts.

Players cannot use golf carts at PDGA sanctioned events but we hoped to have some available for spectators or caddies. Do not count on any carts being available for anyone except course and tournament staff. :(

Awesome course and awesome tournament! I really liked the way the golf bunkers guarded some of the baskets, like on #4, 8 and 10. The island on 5 was awesome too.

Now hopefully I can make it out to states....... how is the difficulty of the other two courses going to be compared to King Quail?

jdavidson
Jan 20 2008, 09:47 AM
Oh... what a bad time to get sick... I really was looking forward to playing that course in a competitive setting... Oh well... TexAg, in terms of difficulty, the same types of shots are required on the other courses, however, there are some distinctions... On the Links course, water comes into play on 75% of the holes... and overall, will be more difficult to score well on (bad shots will be punished much more severely than on King Quail). There are very few trees on the links course, and with all of the water, would be brutal with high winds. The Valley course is more similar to King Quail, and has some fun basket placements on the edge of 15 foot elevated greens.
With that said... anybody know results from yesterday?

2. Your entry fee will be 50% refunded if you cancel 24 hours before tournament begins (Friday 9:00 am)

Thanks, now for some feedback.

For a C-tier event, does this seem reasonable?

Comments?

And what do they do with the entry fees they retain? ARe they added to payout? or pocketed?

james_mccaine

They should probably state where the money will go, but the policy seems pretty reasonable to me, especially since it is stated upfront. I suspect if demand was less, then the policy would be rethought.

The last time I recall playing those holes was after the hurricane a few years back, I hope they've mowed since then.
Long holes through the meadow can be such a fun safari.

I hope some ladies will come out for these holes in particular. They're right up our alley.

Good suggestion from "the legend" We will post it on the HoustonBirdshot.com website. The "no show" $$ will go with heavy bias towards numbers 1 and 2:

1. The desperately needed "Houston Course improvements fund"
2. Jennifer Beazley fund
2. TX State DGC
3. Sanctioning fees for 08 tourneys
4. Tournament expenses

Also suggested but turned down:

1. The "But-I-want-to-go-to-Harvard-fund-and-start-the-first-intercollegiate-DG-team-for-1000-rated-PDGA-players-who-have-not-yet-graduated-or-even-applied-to-any-ivy-league-schools" Fund
2. A birdshot helicopter for transportation for masters age players that always seem to get started on the holes farthest from the players' meeting. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The grass is not high this time around Sue. And the rest of the course is looking good as well. Hole 8 will be the only wet spot if the rains continue next week. Coach Dave has the rest of the course draining pretty good.

Alex, You know I read every thread. :D
I love Texas and my Texas friends, why do you think I sponsor events there?

This was one of the events I was looking at to try and play. :p

If I could fly in and out without losing 2 days from work, I'd play there more often also. :D

I'm one of those old farts who gets to take advantage of the fact that Masters isn't "open". :D

It's bad enough competing with the 990 and higher rated Masters at every event now, who make their living of guys like me that play one 1000 rated round and one 900 rated round in the same event.

Hope to see you at Worlds in MI.

Y'all are MAD I tell ya - absolutely MAD!

The course is short &amp; plays pretty quickly...you'll only need one bottle per round.

Post here or PM me if you need any local supplies or a crash pad Sat. night.

FYI-

After the Quickie, the next tourney in Austin is going to be at Bartholomew Park. (Lets not forget about the HOTT tour "Kyle Open 6/28/08" but not affiliated with the Super D Productions) I have picked July 12th and 13th for this potential "B" tier. Once I talk with Waterloo about this I will make it official. After all, they are the only one's that keep maintnance on the course. Thanks Waterloo

Has anyone come up with a name so I can create a thread? I think I can create a pole on this thread too, bad Ace

Go to the Quickie thread to see some ideas that have poped up...

Alex, thanks for the offer but we will be making this a one day tour.

Short course?, and I hear its a lefty friendly course. Well, I'm feeling good because I got all the bad throws out this week and I'm running purely on "Super D". Yea, you can just call me Super though.

So have you been to Canada lately? Is the island an RV park yet?

I'm adding that one to the list seewhere, awsome!

Yea thats a big problem but what about some xtra holes? And PDGA allows a rating for less than 18 baskets. I think the minimum is 12, have to check though. I would have the final at either Circle C or Pease. Three rounds at Bart is just to much to handle for a bunch of righties. I have to give you guys a chance ya know.

Thanks for the input!
