Registration is now open for the 2008 Green Mountain Open, Augsut 1 thru 3, 2008.

This PDGA A-Tier event (Pros) and PDGA B-Tier (Ams) event will be held at two of the most fabulous courses you'll ever have a chance to play:

North Calais, Vermont
Sugarbush Resort

The North Calais course is a private course deep in the woods of Vermont. It is probably on everyone's top 5 list of courses to play if you've ever been there. It is a monster of a course - not a typical woods course. It has many open shots and meadows mixed with dense woods.

The Sugarbush Peak Course is one of the most scenic and amazing courses anywhere.

We're busy working on making this event even better than last year's Sugarbush Open.

Tournament Director Chris Mayone will post other information shortly, but put this event on your list of must-play events for 2008.

Thanks!

Greetings fellow plastic chasers. As Dan mentioned we are doing everything we can to make this year's Green Mountain Open more memorable than last which is a tough bill to fill. Before I start with some of the reasons you should register I'll post the registration site here right away for those that don't need any further details about how great this weekend will prove to be. The on-line registration page is located at http://www.fromthetreetops.com. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] w/any problems you may experience. The reg has been up for a week now and I believe we have de-bugged the process adequately for seamless registration. General tournament info and many other details will continue to be posted at http://www.gmdgc.org. Please don't skip this event. We are hammering our sponsors for increased payout moneys and expect to be at the top of the chart for A-tier Pro payouts. Our players packs will be substantive and our special events (CTP's, Ace-pots, Longest drive Comp to name a few) and Sat Night Player Extravaganza will be memorable. And speaking of memorable ....... our venerable ATD Paul Olander of N. Calais fame has boldly put up a Golden Cash Bounty of $500.00 samoleans for any sub-50 score registered at N. Calais during the tournament from the Gold tees. Thats $500 Bucks for a sub-50, Sounds like a challenge! Can't wait to see you all in VT.
Sincerely,

This year's Green Mountain Open is conveniently located right after the NT Event at Maple Hill in nearby Leicester, MA. This puts it on the 1st weekend in August, the 1st-3rd, a full 8 days before the start of Worlds in Kalamazoo. We're hoping that many of the top players will use this A-tier as a warm-up for Michigan.
For those of you wondering how we will incorporate the 3 courses into this tournament I would like to mention the format we have settled upon at this time..... The tournament will be run, similarly to last year's, as effectively 2 separate events occurring simultaneously; an A-Tier for pros and a B-tier for Ams. Lets begin w/the Pro format and then we'll get to the AMs.

PROs: There are 6 Pro divisions: MPO, MPM, MPG, FPO, FPM, FPG. All of the Pros will play 2 rounds from the Gold tees in N. Calais on Friday, August 1st. It is a fantastic course design in case you have never played it. To make it a little more interesting (fully unnecessary) the TD for the Calais portion of the GMO, one Paul "Ole" Olander has offered a $500.00 cash bounty for any sub-50 score from the Golds. Go get'em!

On Saturday all the Pros except the FPO's will play the Blue Tees on the Peak course from a trickle start. All groups will play the course beginning on #1. The FPO will play from the Blues on the base course on Saturday, also w/ trickle start from Hole #1. Saturday afternoon many Pros will have some time to check out the other courses, go swimming, nap, whatever. Evening festivities (the Pre-party party) commence at 7pm with a longest throw competition (see below).

On Sunday morning the pros (sans FPO) will play a round from the Championship tees on the Base from a shotgun start. The FPO's will play a round from the Blue tees on the Peak from Hole #1. On Sunday Afternoon there will be a final 9 for the top 12 MPO on the Peak course (this is somewhat weather dependent but we are confident we can fit it in reasonably in time for everyone to be on the road at a reasonable hour).

AMs: The 8 AM divisions play just 2 days. We are offering MA1, MA2, MA3, MM1, MG1,FW1, FW2, & Juniors. On Saturday ALL of the AM divisions are in Calais playing 2 full rounds from assorted tees, depending on division. Return to Sugarbush in time for the 7pm competition (see below) and then settle in for a ripping players party Saturday night. On Sunday morning the M/F Intermediates & Recs/Jrs, will play a round on the Base course from a shotgun start. All the other 5 AM divisions will play a full round on the Peak course in a modified trickle-start formula similar to what we used last year. It will be an EARLY start on Sunday for the Peak players in order to fit everyone through. On Sunday afternoon there will be a 9-hole final round for the top 12 AM1 players and the top 8 AM Masters on the Base course in a shotgun start.

We believe this to be the best way to satisfy as many people as possible, play the most holes, and give everyone we can a look at all the courses. There may be some small changes relative to how many we have registered in each division but this is our current plan.

Some mention of the extra-curricular avtivities at this time would be appropriate. The longest drive/closest-to-the=prize comp will crank up about 7pm on Saturday..... in time to be wrapped up by the scheduled approx 8pm dinner/party time. The 2500ft-long ski trail on the base course that contains the basket for # 4 and the big, wide uphill fairway of #6 will be used for this fun event. Prizes will be scattered about the fairway below the 400-ft line (this is downhill we'll be throwing) and the grand prize for longest throw will be at the bottom. Come and test your arm and your luck. More fun than #12 Peak!! No trees! Longer!
We will again be offering a healthy Ace-pot, assorted CTP's, a $500 bounty for sub-50 round at N.Calais, an excellent players pack, and a chance to win some real money for the Pro divs and some great booty for the Am divs. Magic Hat will once again be providing some awesome beverages for us to enjoy responsibly. We are working on some other events and they will be added to this list as they are confirmed. There will be no shortage of things to do that weekend to say the least. Our belief is that you will not want to go home on Sunday. :)

Information about lodging packages from Sugarbush should be coming on line any day now and we will post them up as soon as they are available to us. Info about camping nearby will accompany that post. The tournament details are listed on line at http://www.gmdgc.org. Look for the Green Mountain Open on the left side of the page and click on it to get all the details we have up to date. You can link directly to the registration page from there or from right here as well. Its http://www.fromthetreetops.com. Any specific questions can be asked by emailing me directly at [email protected] Looking forward to it.

A couple of important items I neglected to mention in the last post ...... This year Sugarbush runs their lifts on Fridays as well as the weekends so any Ams that want to get a preview of the Peak course will have an opportunity to do so (without hiking up) on Friday the 1st. Also Paul Olander will have the N. Calais course open for playing and camping all throughout the week leading up to the GMO for anybody that wants a chance to preview that course. Thanks Paul!

unsubstantiated rumors have been starting to spread that there will be a significant added cash component for this event.

if those of us working on this event have anything to say about it we'll be transforming that information from rumor to fact very soon.

if (i mean when) that happens i suspect the Green Mountain Open will be among the most lucrative A-Tiers of 2008.

this will benefit not only the payout for the A-Tier but will also benefit the B-Tier (Ams) because it'll allow us to sweeten the players packs, the players party, and all the other amenities that will make this a must-attend event.

anyone that attended the 2007 Sugarbush Open knows the incredible value they received for their entry fee.

we're working feverishly to up the ante.

and on top of that you don't want to miss out on the opportunity to play 2 of the premier courses in the entire Northeast. the North Calais course will absolutely blow you away.

if you are planning on attending the Green Mountain Open and are contemplating making lodging reservations at a Sugarbush condo, we STRONGLY urge you to not procrastinate with making your reservations.

Apparently a very large wedding is taking place at Sugarbush the same weekend as our event and they will be looking to book many of the same rooms as our tourney attendees.

Lodging options can be viewed by clicking on the link to the Green Mountain Disc Club in a prior post. The discounted rates for Disc Golfers make sharing a room with others ridiculously reasonable.

The longer you wait the less likely it will be that you'll get a room as close to the courses and tourney central and within crawling distance from the saturday nite players party as you'd prefer.

Well my questionable communication skills have bitten me once again. There is some talk about the <font color="orange">$500.00 golden bounty</font> for this tournament not being explained in a proper fashion so this will be my attempt to clarify the offer. This is the exact nature of it: Every sub 50 score (49 or less) for a full tournament round from the <font color="orange">gold</font> tees at North Calais earns a share of a special $500.00 purse. My wording needed to account for the possibility that, for example, player A might throw two sub 50 rounds while player B throws one. In that event, player A earns two shares or 67% of the purse and player B earns one share, or 33% of the purse. The TOTAL bounty not to exceed $500.00. I think that makes it clear. Now go get that $500! Register and play the round of your life at N. Calais Golds is all it will take.

With that being said I will once again take the opportunity to ask that you book your lodging accommodations SOON. The good, spitting-distance-from-the-tees rooms are going quickly so don't wait. Register and make your reservations as soon as you can.

Wow! What a great weekend of DGolf in VT we just experienced. The Sap Bucket Open was a fabulous success and many folks got to re-appreciate how beautiful it can be to golf in VT when the weather cooperates. I took the opportunity to remind folks that the time is NOW to sign up for the <font color="green">Green Mtn Open</font> and to make your lodging reservations as soon as you can. Go to http://www.gmdgc.org and click on "<font color="green">Green Mountain Open</font>" for a look at the lodging sheet. We are competing for the best rooms w/a large wedding party scheduled for that same weekend so I urge you not to wait. The sponsorship dollars are coming together and we fully expect to be one of, if not THE best-paying A-Tier in the east this year. The registration is slowly starting to gain momentum and I believe that we will fill by July 1. SO I beg of you to not wait .....make your plans to come out and enjoy what will prove to be one of the most memorable and unique DG experiences of 2008. The NCalais and Sugarbush courses are arguably 2 of the most challenging and scenic courses in the East. Myself, along w/ATDs Dan Doyle and Paul Olander are doing everything in our power to ensure that no one leaves VT unhappy about making the trip. Get those fingers working and register on line today! :D Just got off of the Base course for the first time this season ...... I have one word so far and it is WOW! The course is looking amazing. Being very early in the growth season not much undergrowth has come up and the course is looking absolutely fantastic at this point. The Sugarbush Mtn Ops crew has cleaned up all of the winter blowdowns and has the place looking fine. I had a great time out there and this was in a windy rainstorm.... can't wait for the next sunny day!
We'll be going up to the Peak course next to assess what is needed to get the place into immaculate condition for this summer's festivites. Can't wait.

Once again I will take this opportunity to ask that you register as soon as you can for the GMO and to make your reservations for lodging/accomodations as soon as possible to ensure a good location from which to emerge on that glorious Saturday morning before the Sugarbush rounds begin. Looking forward to seeing you in VT this summer.

The 2008 Green Mountain Open is just a little more than 2 months away.

We've gotten a commitment from Coca-Cola for $5000 and we're working on procuring additional sponsors.

But here's what we need more than anything else:

REGISTER ASAP if you're going to be playing in this event.

It is a TD's biggest nitemare to have to make financial decisions and commitments, figure out how much and what merchandise to procure, work out Players party details, tweak formats, figure out other amenities and perks, create a budget, and handle other event details when the overwhelming majority of registrants wait to register until the last minute.

If you know you're going to play in this amazing event, please register now. It helps make for a better event when the TD can plan farther in advance.

Thanks!!!

Of course Dan is 100% correct (because he knows about these things). We really appreciate anyone that is planning on playing in the Green Mtn Open registering as soon as you can. All of those things that Dan mentioned; merchandise options, players party details, formats, prizes etc... EVERYTHING is made more difficult by having to guess on the numbers. I am new to the TD role and it is indeed as complex for a tournament of this size as I suspected it would be. Having a firm idea of registration numbers is the best way to eliminate the guess work for us (and probably to avoid going deeply into the <font color="red">red </font> as well). We want to be able to provide the MOST amenities for the DG-buck for entrants at the <font color="green">GMO</font>. You can help us accomplish this by registering early as opposed to later. The lodging I'm told is all ready beginning to tighten up so I strongly urge you to make your reservations asap. Lodging deals can be taken advantage of by calling <font color="blue">1-800-53-SUGAR</font>.

As I said earlier, the Base course at Sugarbush is looking excellent and so is the course at N.Calais. I met yesterday w/the Mtn Operations people at Sugarbush and we are heading up to the Peak course next week to begin the tweaking process up there. Can't wait. Looking forward to seeing everybody here for what will prove to be a memorable mid-summer tournament. Thanks

I was just reading about some of the 10 courses that the Pros will be playing in Michigan at this year's Worlds...... One of them is at a ski area (Timber Ridge) and sounds a lot like the Sugarbush Base Course. Many of the other courses at Michigan share characteristics of both Sugarbush and North Calais. What a great opportunity to heat up your "mountain game" and win some cash at the same time. Don't miss out on this chance to play in one of the premier Super Tour events of the summer....... There are 2 other weddings in town that weekend .... wedding people book early. Golfers should book early. PLEASE oh please don't wait any longer to get a room for that weekend. Well its go-time for the TD and here is the requisite begging session being sent out to all unregistered folks planning on being in VT in August......We are experiencing somewhat of a lull in registrations at this time and it is precisely NOT what the doctor ordered at T-50 days until tee-off. We are trying to organize prizes, food, and details for possibly 170 people. Or maybe its 66 people. Or maybe 93? Who knows? I don't know because there are so many people that are planning on playing in this tournament that have not yet registered. As each day passes I'm inching closer to being forced to gamble w/a number and hope that everything will work out fine. If you have ever been a TD then you know what an unsettling experience this can be. The expenses for this tournament with 120 ppl run to approximately $20,000. Its not a number I care to find myself on the wrong side of if I guess incorrectly. On the other hand if we fill &amp; I count on 120 then I have something like 50 upset players.
We have talked about many options for spurring registration or cutting possible losses. None of them are attractive options to me and they probably wouldn't sound too good to you either. But unless something turns for the better within the next 2 weeks we'll have to make some tough decisions.

So I am calling out to everyone reading this post that wants to play but has not yet registered: This includes just about the entire GMDGC, almost every VT disc-golfer I know, a bunch of the NEFA crowd that I know is planning on coming to VT in August, and many of the touring PDGA Pros ....... I am asking that those that have the GMO in their future sights to PLEASE get off your butts and register for this tournament SO WE CAN COUNT YOU. Once people see that spots are beginning to become scarce then they will register, we will fill up, and you can stop reading these long, painful diatribes by me and start reading about what cool stuff we are providing for those that HAVE registered.

Another by-product of poor pre-registration numbers is that our added-cash and payout specifics remain unknown. We know right now that we have a bare-bones minimum of 5100.00 in added cash. We are shooting for 3 times that number. But sponsors are harder to cultivate when the reg list holds 30+ ppl. If I had 100-125+ names of players to be holding up in my potential sponsor's faces when I pitch them it would make the job of money-seeking a LOT easier. Any one knows that a group of people have more power than a single person in any kind of business transaction- and a large group has more power than a small group. Without the (documented) evidence of a group of 120+ppl I don't have a lot of power behind my requests for sponsorship money. Its that simple.

Lets be honest. Money is TIGHT right now for everyone that is below the $500k annual salary level. We all know this. We are trying hard to provide all the players with the best value possible for every dollar you spend in VT. But we NEED your help to make it happen. Our hands are absolutely tied tight behind us if the numbers continue to trickle as they are currently. I just doesn't provide the confidence level necessary for planning an event successfully.

So at the end of all this I ask you to register for this tournament in the next 2 weeks if you think you are going to play in it and encourage your playing comrades to do the same. If you are all ready registered .... (thank you) BUST some chops of those that you know are planning on coming and are as yet unregistered! It will make the experience so much better for everybody if we can plan on solid numbers demonstrated by registrations.

I want to thank everyone that HAS registered and implore those that haven't to make a move immediately. Sign up now.

Lets talk about some food. All the Pros playing in N.Calais on Friday will be treated to a delicious, catered lunch (including American Flatbread) by our gracious hosts. This holds true for all of the Ams playing N.Calais on Saturday as well. Many people have been asking what we'll be doing for lunch between rounds at Sugarbush on Saturday and Sunday. For everyone's dining pleasure we will be offering a pretty friendly lunch option during the Sugarbush Rounds on the weekend. Chris &amp; Gerry have offered to whip us up a tasty BBQ featuring Chix &amp; Burgers, Veg Burgers, Hearty Gourmet salads, dessert and beverages. I went and priced a similar lunch at the store down the street. It came to just over $14.00. Sugarbush is generously offering us this BBQ at 12.00 per person. Portions are generous and nobody cares if you have a second cookie or beverage ya know? We are psyched! If you're not dead set on bringin' yer own lunch this is a pretty good deal. We'll be served at the Castlerock Pub dining area in the courtyard. Pretty good spot.

I just finalized the Players Party details for Saturday night. We'll have an awesome spread, a kick-[censored] band playing, and of course some fantastically dangerous indoor putting. I believe we will also have a ping-pong table set-up at tournament central. Should be a great time.

We're looking forward to seeing everyone on the courses. Mtn Ops has done a great job removing some large trees that were blown over blocking the 17th fairway (Peak) and getting both courses mowed and ready to play. I worked today on hole # 11 (magnifico) and made some progress on #10's major cleanup project. Holes 8, 16, and 18 had pretty sizeable wind damage that has been dealt with. #13 on the Base has a new look and plays a little more challenging than last year. The Base course looks great and the Peak will soon be mowed and look just as good. Its an exciting time of year around the mountain courses. Hope to see you there. Please pre-register for this tournament.

The Green Mountain Open is less than 6 weeks away.

Registrations are arriving slowly. The tourney staff will be making final decisions on players packs, players party, and other amenities and perks within the next two weeks.

The quality of the event at this point is highly dependent on how many players pre-register in the next two weeks.

If you attended the 2007 Sugarbush Open, or have attended any of the events over the past 5 years that I have been associated with organizing, you know those events have been overly generous in terms of what participants receive in exchange for their entry fee.

The 2008 Green Mountain Open will feature generous players packs, a Saturday nite Players Party at the base of the ski mountain in a beautiful setting, discounted and reasonable lodging within walking distance of the tourney, a gourmet lunch between rounds at the North Calais course, spectacular scenery and amazingly fun courses, and quality cash and merchandise payouts.

However, here's my offer: I'll throw in $5000 of my own money, courtesy of Brakewell Steel Fabricators, if we have 100 registrants by Friday July 11th.

Just to avoid any misunderstandings.....

My offer to ante up $5000 does NOT imply that this extra $5000 will go straight into the pro purse. That $5000 will help enhance the overall experience for ALL entrants in both the NT and B-Tier portions of the event. It'll help defray tourney expenses so that a gourmet lunch and fabulous saturday nite dinner can be provided to all players...(and maybe even for my friend and official scorer jeff lagrassa). it'll allow us to make the players packs a bit better. Some of it will be added to the pro purse.

What will help the most however to make the experience great for all is to register NOW if you plan on coming.

on behalf of chris mayone, dan desch, and paul olander i'm writing another appeal to you NEFA folks about the Green Mountain Open.

in about 10 days (or maybe less) we'll be making final decisions about players packs, parties, other amenities, and formats. the major determining factor in these decisions is the number of registrants we have.

we currently have about 50 entrants. we all hear of many many more folks that claim they're coming. after 10 days from now knowing you're coming doesn't help us or your fellow players out as much as knowing now will.

one decision we hope we don't have to make is capping the field at 90 players. if 10 days from now we are way way below that point we might decide to cap it and modify the format (but not the days that you play - so those already registered won't get less than they thought).

i strongly urge you to register THIS WEEK or take the chance later that you won't get in.

thanks.

We're 10 days short of the self-imposed deadline for hard tourney choices and decisions.

around july 10th mssrs. mayone, olander, desch, and doyle will decide whether or not to run pros at calais on friday and ams at calais on saturday, or instead have pros play sugarbush friday and everyone play calais on saturday. it would be a heckuva lot easier for the host olanders to have tourney play on calais on saturday only. ultimately the number of entrants we have on or about july 10th will significantly affect our decision.

number of entrants on or about the 10th will also influence decisions like whether or not we hire a band for the players party; how much value we can afford to invest and disburse in the players packs; what value of food we are able to provide at the players party; etc.

help us give you awesome value by registering NOW.

my next post will provide some info about tourney value and purse.

warwickdan
Jul 01 2008, 10:25 AM
based on several budgets, here are some numbers to ponder:

Tourney expenses will be approx $30-$35 per entrant.

Value of perks will be approx $60 per entrant !! (CTP's, Players Packs; Players Party, Calais lunch)

Added Cash from sponsors to help defray the cost of perks, expenses, Am prizes and the pro cash purse will be approx $14,000 to $15,000

The total of the 4 pro division cash purses will exceed the total of the gross entry fees for those divisions by approx $5000.

In essence we will be adding approx $9000 to $10,000 of cash to the Pro divisions to cover the costs associated with expenses, perks, and cash payouts.

Besides the average Amateur (B-Tier) entrant receiving approx. $60 worth of perks for their $30 to $50 entry fee, we will be paying out merchandise prizes of a value equal to approx $20-$25 per entrant.

Sugarbush is coming up huge for us by adding approx $7500 of cash to the sponsorship total. Come show your support for their efforts by attending one of the "richest" events of 2008.

Most entrants will receive a long-sleeved dri-fit shirt with an event or sugarbush logo on both the front and the back.

Other dri-fit merchandise will be available for sale at tourney central.

Once we get close to exhausting our supply of ordered shirts those that register might not be able to receive their gorgeous shirts in their players packs. We're starting to make decisions best on wild guesses so those that register by july 10th are safe as far as getting shrits are concerned.

Help us help your event experience be awesome by registering now.

if you plan on coming to this event and want other options besides sugarbush condos (which might be hard to get this late in the game), consider the following:

an interesting way to go if a bunch of folks want to co-mingle finances and sleeping quarters.

see http://www.vrbo.com (Vacation Rentals By Owner).

there are a number of houses for rent within 15 minutes of sugarbush. they range from exotic (expensive) to basic (inexpensive). i checked out some of the rates and you can get an amazingly feasible house very inexpensively if a bunch of players go in on it together.

warwickdan
Jul 03 2008, 02:51 PM
i'm also suprised more pros playing Vibram haven't signed up yet for the GMO. if you're a traveler and can afford the time away from home/work this is a natural extension for your trip to northern Mass. Sugarbush is probably only about 3 hours north of the Maple Hill complex.

projections right now point towards a kick-butt players pack, gourmet lunch friday at north calais, free magic hat beer friday after you turn in your scorecard on site, a players party with free food, band, and magic hat beer saturday nite, CTP and ace fund prizes, 3 of the best courses in the northeast, swimming holes and spectacular scenery galore, chairlift rides up a major northeast ski mountain....oh, and an above-average added cash component to the pro divisions.

although event expenses (BEFORE payouts) for all of the above (and other event expenses) will come to about $90 per person, projections indicate we should be able to provide a cash purse equal to about 225% of the gross entry fees for MPO.

and for any women contemplating joining us, you'll need to know that historically for any event where i've been involved with finances i've gone overboard with making sure that the event was generous with regard to the added cash component for FPO. I know that Des, Valarie, Mrs. Brinster, and Burl can attest to that. That will definitely be the case with the Green Mountain Open.

So.....Pros.....we need your entries....

mad4disc
Jul 03 2008, 06:18 PM
As Brinster told me a few weeks ago many of the touring Pros just can't make the commitment this far out of their schedule. I know at this point that Jay &amp; Des are definitely coming to VT. Ken Climo (who is NOT making it to VBO as far as I know) has expressed his regrets and will not make it to the GMO this year. But for many other Pro-tour travelers this event is right on the way to Michigan. We chose this week for the GMO for this exact reason: it makes sense for anyone playing at Vibram to stop here on the way to Worlds. The GMO ends Sunday, Aug 3rd. Worlds begins in MI on Monday Aug 11. That leaves 7 full days to travel to MI from VT. That appeared (and still does) to me to be plenty of time to travel and have 4-5 days of practice before the event. In the meantime you spend some awesome quality time in VT/NH before the GMO .... play some of the 12 or so courses within an hour's drive of the Mad River Valley (or maybe NOT play and hang out by a river or a mountain) and relax before the GMO and then the Worlds. So it was with that scenario in mind that we chose the week following Vibram to host the event at Sugarbush. I still believe that it will happen that way for some folks. At least I'm hoping it does.

We've done (and are doing) everything we can to make this event as prestigious as any A-tier on the tour from players packs to the party to generous cash payouts for pros and memorable prizes for the Am winners. I firmly believe that anyone who makes the effort to get themselves in place to play and play well here will be soundly rewarded not just with cash but with an overall experience that far outweighs the trouble it took to drive here from Leicester. The drive from Leicester, btw is about 3 hrs and a little change. Well worth it imho.

As July slugs on we continue to improve the courses, raise sponsorship levels and increase our purse and prizes. We have seen a small bump in registration in the last few days. We need that trend to continue if not increase. We would like to make it to 100 in the next week to calm my pulse and feel comfortable about running NCalais for Friday and Saturday as we have planned. Right now our Pros are being seriously out-weighed by the Am registrations but I suspect that will even out a bit as our numbers continue to rise. Any way you look at it some Pros are taking home some money from VT this summer. Just a matter of who and how much right?

Look forward to seeing you all in VT in a few weeks. In the meantime I wish you all the best of luck in Columbus, Sweden, Oregon, Leicester or wherever you may be playing in the next month. Get ready for the weekend of the summer in the sunny Green Mtns of VT.

From Paul Olander, course owner and host of the north calais course in Vermont, site of one day of the Green Mountain Open:

"Yes, the camping at NC will be open from 7/25 through 8/4, which includes the weekend of the tourney. All are welcome! Sugarbush is a little over an hour away, and carpooling from here could help to ease the gas pains.

We've got several new camping spots available, away from the main area. Unless it turns very dry over the next 3 weeks, campfires will be permitted at those areas as well.

The upgrade to hole #4 is finished. 962 feet, par 5, with a beautiful green at the edge of the brook. The bridge is rebuilt and the grapevine is hung.

We're getting another 10 yards of crushed ledge and hope to get it out on the tees tomorrow night. We've done some major work to #2 and #3 golds to get ready for the stone. Most all gold tees should be well-compacted stone for the tourney.

Dano, we were hoping that our following would come along for this major event. This combined event allows us to have 3 courses, a major payout, player's packs, party, etc.; things NCDGA can't do by ourselves. Yeah, I loved the laid-back informal tournaments, but the prospect of attracting top Pros to come up after MHO intrigued me, most of the admin stuff is being done for us (and this is the reason NCDGA voted to have any tourney this year), and here we are. I hope that folks give it a go."

SOOoo good to see a few more Pros getting on board (we love you too AMs). Yeti's not fooling. N Calais is a spectacular course that will challenge the best golfers to bring their A-game.

Since there has been some chatter about our format potentially changing due to low-turnout I thought I would address this non-issue once and for ALL involved. After a productive work-night out at NCalais last night the powers-that-be sat for a pow-wow to discuss important matters relative to the GMO. This was the end result of our discussion: There will be no format change for the GMO weekend. ALL Pros will play Calais on Friday the 1st. ALL Ams will play at Calais on Saturday the 2nd. EVERYBODY will play somewhere at Sugarbush on Sunday, the lucky ones will play twice.

This eliminates all potential issues and questions arising from a potential last-minute change which is now decided and done with. Its 2 days at Calais regardless of numbers. My hope is that every single player involved in this tournament will return to Sugarbush on Saturday night for the players party and the longest/most accurate throw competition. I expect the prizes for the throwing competition to be spectacular (Mach II portable baskets, discatcher mini-targets, clothing, cash... sound OK?). The throwing comp I expect to run between 6:30 - 7:30 pm on Saturday. This gives everyone time to arrive from Calais, compete, and get ready for the party and dinner. I have a lot of energy, money, and brain cells invested in organizing this party. A good-sized banquet is being thrown. A Band is lugging their crap in from god-knows-where. Kegs FULL of beer are being delivered to the very spot. I think it would do the sport, this tournament, and my sponsors a lot of good if we were all able to unite and celebrate the mid-summer's passage at the party on Saturday night. I hope you are able to share that worthwhile celebration with me. Thanks for listening. Stay tuned.

I know a lot of folks are looking to see a schedule and know some details. I'll get'em up as soon as they are concrete. Part of the delay is we don't currently know exactly which building at Sugarbush that Tournament Central will be set up inside of. This is due to the fact that a wedding has booked the Gate House (where we were last year) for a rain-date for their Saturday Ceremony. If it looks like rain we'll be up in the upper lodge, The Valley House. Its a small walk up a hill (what isn't around here?). So this exact call will not be in place until Thursday of next week so we'll post here and at PDGA as soon as we determine the location of TC. <u>Check-in on Thursday afternoon</u> will begin in the Gate House regardless of where TC is set up. You can also check in on Friday in Calais if you need to. . I'd certainly prefer the Pros to check in on Thursday. Ams can check in at Calais on Saturday if needed but we'd prefer a Thursday or Friday check-in at Tournament Central (wherever that will be) for Ams.

Here's some things we know pretty much for sure:
The Schedule

** Check-in will start Thursday around noon-time in the Gate House.
** There's a very cool clinic @ Sugarbush hosted by Yeti &amp; Des on Thursday at 6.
** ALL Pro divisions start play in North Calais on Friday morning.
** ALL Am divisions start in North Calais on Saturday morning.
** There's an awesome throwing contest at Sugarbush at 6:30 Saturday eve.
** Bar opens 7pm Saturday night at Castlerock Pub (same as last year)
** Dinner starts around 8:30 Saturday night
** <u>Everybody</u> plays at Sugarbush on Sunday.

The Formats:

* Pros will play from the Blue tees Saturday on the Peak from a trickle start on hole #1. Pros will throw from Golds at NCalais.
* Pros will play the Championship layout on the Base course on Sunday
morning. The finals (weather dependent) will happen on the peak course on
Sunday afternoon for MPO. MPM, MPG, and FPO will play 4 rds.

* AMs are a little more split up but we know this much: All Ams are at N.Calais on Saturday and Sugarbush on Sunday. There is still some discussion about tees at NC so I won't reveal anything yet re that.
* AM1, MM1, AM2 will play the Peak Sunday from the white tees. MA3, FW2, Jrs will play on the base on Sunday from the white tees. FW1 were still deciding upon too, sorry.

There we go. I hope that clears up some questions anyway about the layouts and such. Remember if you are playing AM in this tournament that the lift runs at Sugarbush on Friday beginning at noon. I'm trying to work a deal for lift tix other than the standard $15 .....still pending.

Now I just heard from Doug Perkins and we have he and Jamie Masefield (Jazz Mandolin Project) and others booked for the Party so I am very, very happy to be able to tell you this. A lateral replacement for Gordon if you will. (Howzat Floyd?)

Stay tuned for details as they break.

This weekend is going to be awesome and Chris, Dan, Paul, and Dan are TD gods in my 2008 book.

Did I mention that we are playing North Calais and Sugarbush...in the same weekend.

Thanks Dan! I'm coming from Piqua,OH. I looked at some of the pics of the course and just the surrounding scenery and thought what a great experience and the value of the entry fee is awesome without even playing. I can't wait to play on the east coast and meet some new disc golfers.

Any suggestions of what the wife can do that's near by? Where's the closet Ben and Jerry's?

Fortunately for us the REAL Ben &amp; Jerry's (the factory!) is just a half hour drive from Sugarbush courses. There is no shortage of things for non-players to do in the area. We'll try and provide some local attractions and such in the players guide. You can also have a look around here http://www.madrivervalley.com to get a preview and some ideas.

Hey some more good news! We are now officially NOT moving Tournament Central out of the Gate House Lodge. It will be located exactly where it was last year ..... on the second floor of the Gate House .... one floor up from the retail shop and the bathrooms. And the Bar. Its real good news for us. We may have to make some minor accomodation for a wedding on Saturday afternoon but it will be more than worth the small inconvenience to have the Gate House for the weekend.

The Peak Course is nearing tournament-level condition. All of the greens have been buffed out to 10m and will be marked on the ground w/ paint or chalk at the 10m line. I have 3 holes left to complete before I move to the ultra-soggy Base course and see what can be done. In case you're somewhere dry I'll pass on that it has been raining pretty hard in this valley and on the Mtn in particular for 3 of the last 4 days (2.97 in Sunday, 1.66in today). So we could all use a little non-rain dance here on the east coast (I understand MA is also kinda wet).

Good luck to everyone at Vibram. See you next week

That is super good news!!!

The Gate House is brand new and really nice inside. Its location is also perfect right next to the chairlift for the Peak course, below the 18th basket of the Base course, and above the 1st tee of the Base course. The Gate House is also right across from Timber's restaurant.

The only advantage to The Valley House is that it's close to the 18th basket of the Peak course. But frankly, it's kind of ratty and I'm glad we're not in there. :D

SO as the tide of registrations continues to build I have to shout out to anyone that is planning on registering day-of tournament. PLEASE do not attempt this. A-Tier players should be registered and checked-in by Thursday evening at Clinic-time at the latest (6pm). We can't accept walk-up registrations at Calais on Friday morning. Its just too crazy. Plan ahead and register now to avoid any headache of not getting in. The On-line registration will be closing on Wednesday, July 30 at midnight. But why wait until then?

B-Tier players should plan on being registered and checked in at the Gate House by Friday evening 8pm. We are still working the schedule for check-in at the table but it looks like we'll be checking in B-Tier entrants in on Friday from 3-8pm in the Gate House. We'll also have the check-in table open on Thursday for all players from 1-5. Don't show up at Calais on Saturday morning and look to get registered. We just don't have the time to deal w/it, make the cards, make the groups, make the scorecards, and get everyone onto the course on time. Our schedule is tight and its unfair to the others that registered in time to make them delay while we process last-second entries. We'll be grumbling imperceptibly while accepting pre-paid Check-ins at N.Calais on both Friday and Saturday mornings.

So while I've been bugging the hell out of everyone to get registered for the last few months ..... I can say with absolute authority at this point......you're closing in on your last chance to play in this amazing tournament. Here is the link for on-line registration http://www.fromthetreetops.com
Don't deny yourself this opportunity. The Peak course is in the best condition that it is EVER likely to be in. The greens are mowed tight and each basket has a ring painted around it at 10m. The rough is under control (somewhat). The tee-boxes are in good repair. This week for those practicing should be some of the best conditions the Peak Course has ever seen (barring the weather). The Base course is currently shaggy but once I mow it this weekend the condition of both the courses will be at its apex ..... the best they've ever looked. Greens will be shaved tight and baskets ringed at 10m. Come and experience world-class disc-golf at 3 of the state's finest courses; each different from the other and challenging to all levels and abilities. Step up or miss out ...... you make the choice. See you all next week and good luck in Leicester.

<u>THE SINGLE MOST AWESOME THROWING OPPORTUNITY IN RECENT
MEMORY</u>
At 6:30 pm on Saturday evening we will hold the SMATOIRM out on Ezy Rider (Base
Hole #6). Players will gather at the red lift-shack at the top of the hill to watch and
compete as some of the worlds best and a bunch of us regular guys give it everything we
have throwing down a 1500 foot hill thats mowed 200 feet wide. A DGA Mach-Lite
basket will go to the longest throw that stays within the mowed area. But thats not all
.. Well scatter prizes all about the hill at various distances .. mini-baskets w/cash or
clothes; hats and shirts, discs w/cash strapped to-em.. were gonna get creative. The
disc that sits closest to a prize wins that prize! Throwers will have one chance to throw
for the booty. Well supply as many extra spotters as possible but well be expecting a
LOT of spotting help from competitors during the contest. 1500 feet is a LOT of
distance to cover w/spotters. Please be sure that any disc you throw in this contest is
clearly marked w/your name. TD(w/the tape-measure) will have final say on all
judgements of distance in the contest.

Via tournament director Chris Mayonne (who is heading out to the course right now to mow!) there will be a $5 tournament ticket available for B-tier tournament players wishing to practice the Peak course on Friday. This is a hefty discount from the normal rate of $15! This offer also extends all weekend to disc golfers that aren't actually competing in the tournament but who would like to ride up and watch the action.

Additionally, 25 comp. tickets are available to those who are willing to spot holes on the Peak course on Saturday or Sunday. There are a few holes where spotters are absolutely essential to the flow of the tournament and we would really appreciate all those who can pitch in and help out.

I just got back from a work night at North Calais and I can easily say that the course is in the best condition ever. The crushed stone on the tee pads is perfect. The entire course is mowed and weed wacked. The wood piles are cleaned up and the course is ready to eat up the competition.

Knowing Chris, Sugarbush looks just as good. This tournament is going to be amazing.

Floyd the farmers market, sadly, is on Saturday morning from 9-1. I think you'll be busy climbing down a mountain behind round plastic things.

The LIFT for the Peak course will run on Friday. A-Tier players need to walk up Weds/Thursday or arrange a ride w/someone. Sugarbush will be offering $5 tix for ALL B-Tier players that want to practice. . Our thanks to them for a great deal. The Base is free to play this week for tournament entrants. Sunday there will be a 9.5 hole final (can you say Safari!?) that we will need as many spotters as possible for to ensure a timely finish. All spotters ride up for free.

The courses are now immaculate I think its safe to say. Adam O, Evan B, Yeti &amp; Des all got a Base round in tonight under a gorgeous VT sky while sniffing freshly-cut grass. Adam &amp; Evan walked up and played the Peak today. They're young. They lost a couple.

All in all ..... we're looking forward to a GREAT, SUNNY (really) weekend of world-class disc-golf, world class beer from Magic Hat, and world-class music from Doug Perkins and Jamie Masefield. Let the good times roll.

perhaps my last attempt at persuading you to drop what you're doing and get to VT....

projected numbers indicate a ridiculous value for ALL entrants in all divisions.

value of giveaways (shirts, discs, food, party, purse, prizes, etc) FAR exceeds everyone's entry fee.

in MPO we expect to pay about 50% of the field. After expenses and giveaways of approx $120 per player we then add $4000 to the division to offer a pro purse of about $6500, which is pretty significant given we might only have 30-35 entrants paying an $80 entry fee.

in FPO, although we currently only have 3 entrants, 1st place will probably pay $600 to $700.

the courses are spectacular and are only exceeded in spectacularity by the value of what you'll get.

Played the North Calais course first thing this morning. It's easily one of the most beautiful pieces of land that a disc golf course could possibly hold, and certainly the nicest private course I've ever played. Carved out of gorgeous Vermont woods and over severely rolling terrain, it's just jaw-droppingly beautiful. Definitely one of the top 20 courses I've played lifetime out of 175+ in U.S. and Canada over the last 13 years.

We're at over 100 registrants and still growing. The disc golf clinic is this evening, and the fun starts out at North Calais first thing tomorrow morning!

And the pro divisions have begun play at North Calais! The skies are clear and we will hopefully not see the scattered thunderstorms today which hit intermittently yesterday.

Due to the remote location of the North Calais course, we will not have any live scoring today. But we do hope to offer live scoring here at Sugarbush on both Saturday and Sunday.

Check back after lunch today for first round scores. The gold rated tees play at a par of 62 and are a serious test of fairway management and golfing skills. Course owner Paul Olander is offering a "Golden Bounty" of a $500.00 cash payment for any sub-50 rounds played from the Gold tees at N. Calais during this tournament.

It was awful up on the peak this afternoon. Lots of rain and plenty of wind made for difficult conditions, but the best of the best still played some amazing golf.

~ Avery hit the first available tree off the tee on the 1200' downhill hole 12. He punched out of the woods, then flicked a BOMB 800'+ down the middle of the fairway. He saved his five.

~ Hole 16 - Yeti throws a 600' anhyzer with a Roc and the crowd goes wild. He gets his three and seals the deal.

The weekend was amazing on so many levels. The catered lunch at North Calais was phenomenal, the players party was a blast and they were both made better thanks to the generous support of Magic Hat Brewing. Magic Hat has really stepped up as a huge sponsor of disc golf in VT. On top of the food and beverage, the golf courses looked amazing. North Calais and Sugarbush were both groomed as well as I have ever seen them. Paul and his crew, as well as the onemanMayoneshow at Sugarbush did an outstanding job getting ready for this weekend.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped put this event together, everyone who played, and everyone who came out to watch. Disc golf in the Northeast continues to grow by leaps and bounds. It is awesome to be a part of it.

hole #1 on the Peak, although being listed at 300 feet, plays more like 375 feet I suspect.

apparently Paul Ulibarri high-fived the wedding party guests watching from the lodge next to the #1 fairway BEFORE he teed off. then when he aced the hole he ran back and had to do another round of high-fives. Cale's ace happened just a few minutes after Paul's. That must have been pretty amazing for the wedding party to see....

The highlight of the event wasn't the 4 aces. it wasn't the amazing shots. it wasn't the players party.

nope - none of them.

the highlight of the event was witnessing Evan Brummet's spectacular feat of chugging a cup of sock juice created from the drippings of players socks after they came off the base Course after Round 4 Sunday afternoon. That was simply the best.

Or maybe it was Evan accidentally plummeting off a cliff at a local swimming hole, dropping 40 feet, and apparently landing on his feet on a rock slab with only a few arm scrapes to show as evidence. his fall was witnessed by a number of players that initially thought they'd hear the brutal "SPLAT" sound of flesh and rock becoming one.

how bad could it be to drink sock juice when one survived a fall off a cliff?

The scary thing about that putt is the OB about 10' behind the pin, and there are pine needles and a downwards slope right towards it. I had a very similar shot on Thursday from about 30-40' behind that spot, and my putter landed at the base of the pole with nearly the same flight path and I ended up OB. There's a good chance that if Yeti misses that putt, he's taking a circle 4.

Great work Mike! That clip is VERY, very watchable in the higher def setting. What a putt! Nothing like deucing #6. Wonder if there were any others? (I'll look).

Here's what I do know ..... the scoring averages on the following holes for the A-Tier Friday at North Calais.

Hole 2: Par: 3 SA=3.71 1st Rd 3.68 2nd Deuces- Zero

Hole 4 Par: 5 SA=6.27(!) 1st rd 5.95 2nd Birdies: 5 all day

Hole 10 Par: 3 SA= 4.26 1st rd 4.13 2nd Deuces: Zero

Hole 12 Par: 3 SA= 3.97 1st rd 3.86 2nd Deuces: Zero

So the jury is IN. North Calais is effling HARD!!

Some Sugarbush stats on the "Front Four" on the Base course as I call them .... Holes 2, 4, 7, &amp; 8. All are usually par 4 on the card. 2,4,&amp;7 were changed to Par 3s on the A-tier card.

Hole 2 Par: 3 SA=4.23 Deuces: Zero
Hole 4 Par: 3 SA=3.86 Deuces: Zero
Hole 7 Par: 3 SA=3.95 Deuces: 2 (Avery &amp; Sjur)
Hole 8 Par: 4 SA=4.11 Birdies: 12 Deuces: Zero

So whaddya think about them numbers Mr LaG?

So what do you know? Sugarbush was hard too! Sheesh! The weather may have played a smallish part in the higher scoring averages for the Sugarbush holes which were all played on Sunday in adverse rain conditions. All of these guys (the entire A-Tier) did a great job battling that course (Sjur a 53!?) and making the most of it.

So whaddya think about them numbers Mr LaG?

I think, for starters, that I'm frankly quite amazed you were able to read hole numbers off those scorecards, many of which were sopping wet and all but illegible! :D

Also:

<u>North Calais</u>
Hole 2: Par: 3 SA=3.71 1st Rd 3.68 2nd Deuces- Zero. <font color="blue">At 372 feet, uphill, with a sunken teepad and a fast green, this is no surprise. FYI, this hole was deuced by an amateur with apparently a 175 ft. "putt." </font>
Hole 4 Par: 5 SA=6.27(!) 1st rd 5.95 2nd Birdies: 5 all day. <font color="blue">The well protected polehole and OB conspire to raise the SA on this one. I also think people try to get too aggressive on the first two shots which, although downhill, aren't really as wide open as they appear. Any shot that misses the fairway necessitates a pitch-out. </font>
Hole 10 Par: 3 SA= 4.26 1st rd 4.13 2nd Deuces: Zero. <font color="blue">When I played this one in practice on Thursday, I threw a putter off the tee and played it as a par four. At 401 feet, uphill, and with a narrow fairway, it almost plays as such. Along with 12, this is one of the holes we talked about where I thought the gold tee was above my ability - if I played it a hundred times I would never deuce it without hitting a 100+ ft. "putt." </font>
Hole 12 Par: 3 SA= 3.97 1st rd 3.86 2nd Deuces: Zero. <font color="blue">The weird angle from the gold tee on this hole along with the OB near the basket probably conspire to raise the scoring average on this one. But at 359 feet it's not excessively long. </font>

<u>Sugarbush Base:</u>
Hole 2 Par: 3 SA=4.23 Deuces: Zero. <font color="blue"> This hole is listed at 300 ft. but uphill and well protected. Other than miserable playing conditions, I have no explanation for why the scoring average was so high here. </font>
Hole 4 Par: 3 SA=3.86 Deuces: Zero <font color="blue">This one was listed as a par 4 for the B-tier competitors, but for Open pros, it's really more of a 'tweener.' It's 570 feet but downhill, and in better conditions players at that high level will take 3s all day on it. </font>
Hole 7 Par: 3 SA=3.95 Deuces: 2 (Avery &amp; Sjur). <font color="blue">Climo deuced this one last year too. It's 530 feet but downhill and almost wide open. In good playing conditions, there's really no excuse for a 4 here for elite players. </font>
Hole 8 Par: 4 SA=4.11 Birdies: 12 <font color="blue">If 30 Open players and 14 Masters for a total of 44 golfers playing this hole resulted in 12 scores of birdie 3, that's almost a perfect distribution of 27.3% birdies. The scoring average was very close to 4 as well. </font>

So, if we had to do it all over again I'd still call hole#2 and hole#7 on the Sugarbush Base course par 3s. I might think about changing hole#4 to an easy pro par four. I think that par 62 was about right, with Sjur's hot round of 53 at -9 under par intuitively feeling about right.

Over at North Calais, I think hole#2 should stay the same - the pin is in a really nice spot on the green and there's nothing wrong with having a tough par 3. I think Hole#4 and #12 are also fine just as they are as well. Paul may want to think about moving the basket or gold tee closer on hole#10, because I just cannot imagine even gold level players recording a deuce here other than once in a blue moon, and there's an emotional aspect about a hole that practically cannot be birdied.

If you are referring to Yeti's deuce on hole#6 at North Calais, it's listed at 452 ft. but from a elevated teepad so it plays shorter than that. If you're aggressive, you can choose to carry the OB marsh and throw to the right of the trees and more directly at the polehole. Yeti's anhyzer drive probably would have been very close to the polehole but it looks like it clipped a tree. There is plenty of room on the left to bailout and throw a safe shot - I threw an overstable driver and ended up probably about 30-40 feet shorter than Yeti's drive, and then promptly threw OB while trying to lay up.

Can you tell its raining a lot here? I'm looking at cards. bad. There were indeed other deuces on hole #6 at NCalais. Dan O and Loren T deuced it on the same card. Jeff Cahill deuced #6 in BOTH rounds at NC. THAT is impressive. Good going Jeff. You had 2 of the total 5 birdies (40%) on that hole. There were even 2 AM deuces on the hole. MA2 Big-arm Will Mehls (Scoontar protoge) and MA1 Chris P both recorded deuces. Lots and lots of circles and penalties on #6 too. Lots of'em. Love that course.

Grant it it was from the white tees but it was still a hard hole to navigate. I wish I could have enjoyed sugarbush more but with the rain it was a little miserable.
