Looks like more vandalism at the park. Me and Fernando played a round at McClain today and the Tee Signs on Holes 4, 5 and 6 are missing. We looked for the signs while we played but did not locate them. I'm going to call the Park Police and report the vandalism that has been going on out there. Maybe we'll catch them in the act someday.

We will probably have to put some kind of temp sign at the Holes for the SA Bud Open.

Mike sent me what he needs for sponsor signs, these double as tee signs as well. After we put those up we can use Coach as security, he has a knack for dealing with delinquents. :D

Any way ALL the tees will have some sort of sign for the open.

I also have some stuff that might cut the graffiti off the baskets. Its not available anymore so I'll hit the hardest hit baskets first. If nothing else maybe some yellow paint to cover the obscenities.

Normally I would recommend a walk through Saturday after the mini or Sunday, but since this seems to be happening mid week we should do one then. I'm off Thursday and Friday any one care to join me one of those days and do a walk through/tweaking?

some suggestions on mcclain work days. course is looking awesome by the way but can you guys try and drag allot of the limbs that have been trimmed off the fairways?? Hole # 15 in particular. the landing zone on that hole is about an 8ft pile of trimmed limbs.. also makes for a nice snake den...

All the old piles of trees and limbs have been a higher priority for us. I have brought this to the attention of the San Antonio Parks and Recs Department. There are lots of things that McClain needs to make it that much better. We need the city to move the piles, that's way too muck work to just move them around and not actually have them removed. I really hate landing in those piles.

The park needs more than just Disc Golf there. We need a playground, walking trails, picnic tables, BBQ pits, etc: This would probably help in getting the course cleaned up and have less vandalism as there will be more park users.

I got a call from the city today regarding bridges in the park...
the bad thing is they are going to remove them. it seems that someone put some homemade playground equipment in a different park and someone got hurt so the city is going through all the parks in the city and removing anything that is not supposed to be there. Alma from the city called me and said they will probably remove the bridge on friday and asked that I send out a message so if the person who built the bridge wants to salvage the materials... they can.

on a lighter note... they said that they noticed that there were several tee signs that were missing and asked that we contact them about replacing them with either temporary signs for the upcoming events or permanent signs in the future.

sorry for the bad news and I hope everyone is enjoying the course.

I heard some really great news today from SAPAR. I have a new contact to call in the Directors Office for any issue. This is an email i received from SAPAR:

[QUOTE]
Thank you for supporting the Parks & Recreation Department. Im coordinating with staff to prepare cost estimates for: bridge, walking trails, playground, picnic tables, and BBQ pits. Capital funding is a challenge. The first step is to determine actual costs and plan for future fiscal years. I will coordinate with our maintenance department about the stolen Tee Signs. Please do not hesitate to contact me.

I called them back and stressed how the priority at McClain are bridges. I am not quoting anyone but I think I heard them say there might be some funding for a bridge. :) :) I will keep everyone informed. Keep your fingers crossed.

Stacey and I played the front 9 today and almost every Tee Sigh was ripped off the post or had graffitti on it. We spoke to another group that played the back 9 and they said the same about those holes. I have Holes 8, 9 and 18 with me and I am going to grab the rest of them tomorrow. We have already had 3 Tee Signs stolen from McClain and I don't want that to happen again. We need to figure a better way of securing them before more of them end up missing.

I hate to sound like the fatalist but until the city starts putting in more facilities to bring in more people this may be something we have to contend with. I am open to suggestions and encourage all to come up with their own.

The beauty of McC is also its biggest weakness. Most holes are surrounded by trees and brush making them nice and tight, this also gives cover to those doing the damage.

I doubt if the city would fence in the park or put in more lights. Fences say "Keep Out", something the city won't do, besides the money to do so. That also leaves the green belt owned by CPS, who are more concerned about their access. Lights would diminish the ability for glow frolf. Glow at McC is intriguing and scary at the same time isn't it :D:eek:. I sincerely doubt we will have any increased patrols by SAPD, NEISD, or Park Police. This vandalism is minor compared to what happens at some of the larger and more popular parks in town.

I as most of us assume that this is the work of kids, although I see names written on benches at the park the say otherwise. I'm not pointing fingers at any of my fellow DGers, but we should at least lead by example. I myself cart out my empty water bottles and drink cans, but extinguish my ciarette butts on the ground and leave them. A practice I am stopping effective immediately, so if anyone feels I pointed a finger at them for anything else in this post, feel perfectly free to chastise me if you see me not extinguishing my butts and disposing of them in another manner. It may be cliche but it rings true, "Remember, whenever you point a finger at some one, you have three more pointing back at yourself."

Back to the subject at hand. Since we assume that this is done by a younger generation, how does anyone feel about an awareness program aimed at the area middle schools and high school? Would anyone else like to be involved? PM me or email me (email addy is in my profile).

New motto a la spelunkers (cave explorers), "Leave nothing behind except footsteps, take nothing back except memories."

Guess what I saw someone doing at McClain today? Banging on Tee Sign #7 with a tree branch. He was an unsupervised Community Service Worker. I called the cops and got out of there because I felt threatened after I confronted him and the way he and another started walking up to me. When the cops showed up, I pointed the guy out, they talked to him and the work crew left. I am going to call the city and ask them to please not send the Community Service workers to McClain.

They weren't kids.

In texas we do everything bigger and better. Therefore, we don't just do a stakeout where you sit around and wait ... we do a steakout where you grill meat and wait around. Its really the best of both worlds ... now if we could just figure out how to make doughnuts on the grill I'm sure Richard Dreyfuss (Det. Chris Lecce) and Emilio Estevez (Det. Bill Reimers) would magically show up. Hopefully Rossie stays at home.

Thanks Babe!!! GATOR!!! ;)

Has McClain been really crowded or what? The last few times Stacey and I have played we had to wait on alot of holes. Lots of new faces....looks like Disc Golf is really taking off in the Alamo City. I counted 20 cars in the parking lot when we left. I've also been spreading the word around about Old Pearsall Park so that course can get stomped down some. Can't wait for us to run some Tourneys out there. I'm going to find out when the "official" opening date is so we can plan something for that day.

Same thing at Nani. The last few times I've played there, at least 2 or 3 other groups were on the course and for awhile one day there were 6 groups throwing on the 9 holes. It looked like a tournament was in progress.

I cut down Knoll Creek about noon today, there were 14 cars in the parking lot. Being today is a school holiday I assume most were out playing in this nasty mess. Long live the hardcore DGers!

There has been a grass roots effort underway to get a work day at McClain on February 1st, 2008. This is Super Bowl Sunday. The plan is to go to McClain in the morning, knock out some course work, and then head over to Ernie's (One Shot) house for a Super Bowl Party. Trust me you don't want to miss One Shot's wings and riblets.

Its time to step up and do your part to clean up the course. I'll be working with Orlando (he doesn't know yet :D) to develop a list of the most pressing needs and the course. Shawn Hess and Tracey Olsen have also agreed to help out (Shawn owns a tree trimming business) so we'll probably have all the equipment there to remove those downed trees. If you are interested in helping let me know so I can get a gauge on how much beer to buy.

There is a new task list at www.onlinetasklist.com (http://www.onlinetasklist.com) for McClain. Username is SADCMcC, the password is hyzer.

Please list areas of the park that need special attention. If you take over a task and finish please mark it as complete.

If you know of work that needs to be done at our other courses, post as well. Our main objective is getting McClain ready for the Ice Bowl.

Thanks guys for all you do!

Got some good news to share. Joe Rotan from Twisted Flyer contacted Innova Discs about the rusting chains on the baskets at McClain Park (Thanks Champ;)). He got the ball rolling for us and now this is an email to me from Innova:

"Hey Orlando Thank you for getting back with me. We do not need the old chains. I would like to ship you 18 replacement chains. Harold would like to also send you 50 disc (your choice) for your inconvenience . I will look to ship on Monday.

Let me know what disc you and the club would like.

Take care

In my opinion the best way to influence more work / better oversight is through the elected officials. Bryan McClain Park is the responsibility of Councilman John G. Clamp. Here is a link to his webpage with all of his and his staff's contact info: http://www.sanantonio.gov/council/d10/

I'd encourage everyone to email or call and put pressure on him to make sure the park is being maintained properly.

Mr. Clamp and District 10 Staff,

I see on your website that one of the items on your list of goals during the current term is infrastructure tasks.
I frequently use Bryan McClain Park in your district, specifically the disc golf course.
When I am in the area to use the course, I usually stop at local convenience stores to buy drinks, snacks, gas, etc. thus bringing economic benefits into the district.
Admittedly, that’s not a lot of money in the overall picture but every dollar counts.

I am saddened and concerned about the recent decline in condition of the park and disc golf course.
There are several reasons for this:
- disc golf baskets have been stolen and not replaced (to my knowledge)
- weeds are high
- drainage is a major problem sometimes making playing parts of the course highly problematic
- lack of trash cans which contributes to the litter in the park
- lack of bridges to cross the creek that runs through the park.

In recent weeks, I have decided to play other courses in other districts instead of McClain Park because of the issues listed above
Thus, I have taken my “convenience store” dollars out of the district.

There are 2 regular mini tournaments (Wednesday evening and Saturday morning) that can draw as many as 35 players.
However, attendance in recent weeks (including mine) has dropped due to the condition of the course.
Less attendees = less economic benefit for local businesses.

In addition, regular players of the course often tell out-of-town players that McClain is a great place to play.
We often get these players to drive in on weekends to play the course.
The current condition of the course is not helping the reputation and draw of the course to out-of-town players who also bring in dollars to the district.

Please do everything possible to improve the condition of the course and keep it a premiere disc golf location in San Antonio.

Received this follow-up email from Veronica Moreno of SAPAR earlier today:

I was forwarded your email from CD 10. My name is Veronica Moreno and I work for the Parks & Recreation Department. Brian McClain disc park is very important to us so thank you for your comments. Recently staff has meet with members of the Disc Association to review our maintenances practices. The park being in the flood plain does make its maintenance a challenge at times.

Work order will be initiated to repair the baskets and we can look to install additional trash cans.

I will have Park manager Richard Gatlin contact you to help answer any park mowing questions.

A request for bridges has been made on a previous occasions but unfortunately no funding is available. Our Park Project division is aware of this request and keeps it in mind should any funding become available.

Please feel free to contact me, your suggestions are very much welcomed.

Thank you,

Just recieved a call from Richard Gatlin from SAPAR. He said he walked the park last week and was "amazed by the amount of maintainace issues that exist at McClain." He said he took photos and that the mowing should commence this week. He also said that they would address the issue of the missing baskets as well. He also mentioned a upcoming bond issue that could become a source of income to construct bridges. He also said that a temporary water crossing needs to be constructed because of the hazardous crossings that exist. Lets see if anything comes out of this. Lets hope anyway.

We played the full 18 this past Saturday. The course is in PRIME condition right now. They had just finished up mowing all of 13 when we played through. The rough is VERY ROUGH but it just looks beautiful out there right now.

I played a round at McClain today and it was an enjoyable one. The course looks good. I want to schedule a couple of work days at the course after LOSO. I want to get Hole #3 Tee Box retaining wall constructed back up and also check out some alternate pins for the Bryan McClain Open. Check back here for more details.

FYI, We need the alternate tee & pin positions documented in GPS coordinates by next Thursday. I have a meeting with the Parks Guys on Friday and they are ready to implement the ideas. Are you available prior to the mini next Wednesday to scope some out?

Possible Alternate Tee Boxes and Pin Locations plotted. These are gonna be some sweet holes. We'll schedule some work days and play them at the minis.:)
