Hi everyone, first time poster/lover of the game. I've been playing for a couple years and work in the web development field and have built a site to facilitate the trading of discs.

The site is not available to the general public yet as I am trying to beg you to add your discs so it doesn't suck!

The site is at www.discaroo.com/default.asp (http://www.discaroo.com/default.asp) (you won't see the site if you just go to www.discaroo.com (http://www.discaroo.com)). I am planning on "opening" the site to everyone in 10 days or so and would love to have a lot of discs available.

Let me know what you think.

I left you some feedback; you should probably include the Gateway lineup as well.

Wizard / Chief
Warlock

Element
Element-X
Demon / Scout

Sabre / Apache
Blaze / Warrior
Hybrid

Illusion
Blurr
Spirit
Rage
Speed Demon
Speed Demon DT
Diablo DT

edit: Oh, Blast DT.

I would suggest being able to post pictures as a user. That function might be on there but I didn't see it. I know that when I am trading used discs online it is nice to see what the disc will look like and not a stock photo.
Also if you come up with a standardized way to rate discs then it might be easier for people to know what they are getting.

A standardized rating system would be very nice. Here's the one we try to use on discgolfreview.com

Using sleepy's scale
10- Never thrown, no ink, brand new condition
9- Field tested or used for one or two rounds
8- Lightly used with very minimal wear
7- Used with some minor dings or scuffs but still in good shape
6- Typical used disc with the usual dings, scratches but still worthy
5- Kinda beat, significant wear, has lost a good bit of it's stability
4 - Beat up turnover disc with some evident war story wear
3 or under- Beat to Hades dog chew toy

I think there's a big difference in "Field tested" and thrown a couple rounds. I'd like to know which was done before i bought a disc.

son of the dude: right now the site is only set up for trading. The selling is a great idea but e-commerce adds a whole extra level of complexity to the site that I didn't want to do before I even knew if the idea was stupid or not. If it works, look for that in the future.

I have added Ching and Gateway discs as well as Discraft's FLX plastic.

The one thing that you really need to put in is "Paging" for the "Available Discs" link. I could see this as a problem area with the more discs getting added. When you query the db, I would limit the result set to 10-20 records to be returned. That way you don't end up creating a monstrous page for scrolling as well as in size. Nice site though...very functional from what I have seen.

dgdave
Nov 16 2007, 08:42 AM
You might try a "Looking For" section. You can put specific things you want and people could rummage through their stuff if they have that specifically

steveschlange
Nov 16 2007, 04:34 PM

patrick - thanks for adding so many discs! I am getting disc names for gateway from their site at http://www.gdstour.com/gateway_golf_discs.php and don't see the Rage. Is that old or really new?

dgdave: more than a few people have asked for the looking for - look for that feature by the end of the year

need to add a Gateway speed demon. also, the old gateway discs like an apache, scout, chief, warrior. i don't know all of the names unless they only had 4. and gateway and quest both have "HI-FLEX" plastic. AAAND gateway had the old "H" plastic. don't know what that stands for though.

oh, and you might want to add CE plastic for those looking specifically for that (everyone)... and nike plastic for gateway too. granted, CE is a kind of champion, and nike is a kind of evolution, but both are looked for specifically. it would be pretty useful for the "wanted" lists, if nothing else. i feel like a nerd.

This might be miniscule but when you go to a particular disc many times I've noticed the Manufacturer Link doesn't go to the same plastic as the description. I didn't look through all of them but a number of the Innova discs are directed to a different plastic.

If your registered with Paypal you can send a invoice to someone for payment through their e-mail. Granted paypal will take a small cut, but you have a little protection through them depending on your account type.

SuicideXjack : It's a great idea but how can you integrate for multiple payees? It would be easy, and good for my bank account, if all the money came to me but it needs to go from user1 to user2. The only way I see to do it is to have user1 go to their account and enter user2s paypal email and then send them the money. This works for the users but is far from good as I have no way of passing data back and forth to confirm transactions (send emails, remove sold discs from lists etc).

Solutions?

Great idea faster!

Add the innova pro line gremlin for discs, and special blend (as in roc or wraith) plastics.

The other concern I see is when a person doesn't have any discs in their want list there is no way to request a trade with them and no way to contact them to see what they want. The request a trade buton only shows up if a person has a want list. See Greatzky's discs. Just a little concern, should be easy to fix.

I added the pegasus, gremlin, rage and blast dt discs as well as CFR, pro line and special blend plastics.

jmardis: you are right about the requesting a trade not showing up but shouldn't this be how it works? If they don't indicate any discs they are willing to trade for then they aren't really willing to trade the disc. Of course, I am sure there is just some confusion about how things work that are keeping people from linking their discs with their "Wanted Discs"

I did add a little warning box that shows up on your myDiscs home page if you add a disc without linking it to your Want List. Hopefully that will help.

Am I understanding you right and, if so, does my answer make sense?

one thing (dont know if this was mentioned) would be when you select a manufacturer that all of the models of others dont show in the drop down. This may be getting picky but otherwise things look great... should be adding some discs shortly.

Not sure if I saw it but is there a place to mark something as Prototype?

also... some discs to add
Gateway/Quest Odyssey
" " Proto
Latitude 360 Discs
(primatus, Mirus)
Aerobie Discs
(epic, sharpshooters 1-3, arrow)
Optimizer

Mini's? would be cool to be able to trade minis for some that might collect various ones. (ie. my club mini for your club mini or something)

and yeah... i'm the king of random discs

The way you have the trade system may be the best way to do it, I haven't put enough thought into it yet. The only concern I see is that it forces a person to put up a specific disc that they want for a specific disc they have. Is there a way to have a list of wants and a list of trades and then a trade request form - or am I just repeating what you already have?

If you haven't found the answer yet, I am not sure on the shipping stuff. The post office should be able to tell you if the usps site does not.

The other thing that seems odd is the suggestion to mail the disc not in an envelope. I get two envelopes for a buck at the dollar store and the shipping can be as little as $2-3. Is there a particular reason you suggest not using an envelope?

Is there an option to ask to trade a disc to an individual that is not on their want list?

Jordan

steveschlange
Nov 18 2007, 01:04 PM
jmardis:
the shipping thing is just to make it as simple and cheap as possible. I would certainly mail new and expensive discs in envelopes but for the used one's you can ship them for 5 stamps and save a buck, but either way it's still cheap.

Regarding the trading system - you don't have to list specific discs you want for your's. You can actually go to the Add Wanted Disc form and not fill anything out - click save. What you have just done is add a "Generic Disc" that says I will trade my disc for any other disc (or at least I am open to trade requests for any discs, you can always decline a trade request).

A couple examples:
This user wants to only trade for a specific disc http://www.discaroo.com/disc-detail.asp?id=234

but this user http://www.discaroo.com/disc-detail.asp?id=282 has said they will trade for anything by adding that generic disc.

you could also, for example, only fill out the brand (i.e. Innova) and type (i.e. driver) which when saved would say "I will trade for any Innova Driver".

So, at least in my mind, the system is set up much like you say and can handle very generic to very specific disc types.

Does this make sense?

Also, I got your PM and will respond in a few days hopefully. I still have to make decisions on a lot of stuff like that.

jmardis
Nov 18 2007, 01:18 PM

things to add/consider

COLOR
-tie-dyed
(ability to pick from 256 pallette for other colors)

PLASTIC TYPE
-Cryztal

MOLDS
-Ontario Roc

MISC section (where you can choose more than one... radio buttons or check boxes)
would be a good place to include some of the following..
-Proto
-1st Run
-Collectible
-Signed
-'Antique' (for those over 10-20yrs and older?

-also ... notes when you request a trade? This way you can let the person know that they might have 2 discs you want to one of yours or visa versa or something like someone just asking for anything discraft and you asking for specifics?

-dont know if this would come up much (if @ all) but maybe a way to add multiple of the same disc?

-ability to contact the seller (if you dont have matches w/ the person)

-ability to export list to txt (to paste on the discussion bard for instance)

-search by user or you can 'see other users discs'

-search by zip code (so you wont have to deal with shipping)

-sorry if i'm putting a lot but I have what I think would be a cool idea for something waay down the line...
the ability to automatch w/ multiple people to get everyone something they would want (or manually be able to do this). IE. I have a 96 Ontario Roc, DG'er B has a Cryztal Buzzz that I want and he only wants a CE Valk, DG'er C has a Valk, wants a 96 Ontario Roc... it would match up or let us propose the scenerio that I trade my Roc to C... he trades his Valk to B and B gives his Buzz to me. Maybe confusing but could be pretty sweet (again... waay down the road maybe?)

-Total discs available count on mainpage would be cool... also could do total discs (counting all that have 'passed thru these doors')

Another plastic type is from lightning: they have standard and prostyle. Their #1 driver is not on the disc list either. I guess there is a driver 1 disc now that I look harder.

Add crystal z and photon glow and elite (non z/x) from discraft, super stupid soft and s glow from gateway, dx glow from innova, and sparkle from dga for disc plastics.

For disc colors there can be tie dye as well as a custom dye/stamp.

There are two cyclones and two squalls and two reefs in the disc model dropdown list.

Whamo isn't in the disc brand dropdown list. Their 'long range driver' isn't in the disc list either.

Add the raven from innova for discs.

Add kc pro plastic - I don't know if you will but there are many runs of kc pro plastic from 4x to 12x. There is also H plastic from gateway. Is pro plastic from innova the same as pro line plastic? There are candy type pro line discs that are not the same as the pro plastic.

Also, I don't see a way to do a more generic search on the available discs page, for example, search for all innova discs (no disc type or model) or exclusively for all mid range discs, regardless of brand. Maybe you can do this already, but I couldn't find it.

Is there a way to offer someone a trade if you don't have anything they want - can you find out if anything you have would work for a trade by sending a message - maybe private messaging? Maybe you have a disc they want in a different plastic?

How am I notified when someone wants one of my discs anyway?

When I click the request a trade button I get a message saying 'You must select one of your discs to request a trade'. What am I doing wrong?

150-class is a weight classification. I understand that it can be seen in the listing of an individual disc, but I would like to be able to search for "150-class" discs only, much as one can search for "Gremlin"s or "Putter"s.

Update:
The matching system is working now. I would say it's at 100% but it's impossible for me to test all scenarios so there may still be some glitches.

I added a bunch of new discs, brands and plastics from the discgolfsweden db but still have some work left to do tonight to get them all.

I added a bit more detail to your list of discs on the myDiscs page so you can tell the difference between multiple discs you own of the same brand and model.

The comment box is a great idea. I have added it to the "to do" list.

The number of trades seems low considering the number of discs and users and I want to be sure it's not a usability issue keeping people from initiating trades.

How do I just look for 10x aviars? I added a wanted disc to another disc I own but how do I specify that I want a 10x aviar instead of Putter, Innova, KC Pro Edition, and optionalx4 or whatever....

redhaired one: is 10x a plastic or what? We are still missing some models etc. I am hoping to get them all up tonight.

I am not sure if this helps but all of the fields on the Wanted Disc form are optional so if you, for example, only fill out the brand field and select "innova" you are saying you want ANY Innova Disc. Of course, you can also be very specific by filling out a lot, or all of the fields.

If anything is confusing let me know so I can work through it before really pushing the site on people beyond this forum.

faster, can you have a popup box appear if people don't link their trade discs with at least a generic disc telling them that their discs won't be listed if they don't link it (at least with a generic disc)? That might take care of the confusion of why their discs are not listed on the available discs list.

I have had one trade request and sent one trade request, no trades yet though.

10x refers to how many World Championships Climo had at the time. All the new KC rocs and aviars are 12x's. 10x is the best KC plastic out there. 8x Rocs hold the most value

jmardis,

hey thanks for all the help and suggestions. I just fixed a bug so that trade you were trying to make should work now. Let me know if it doesn't.

I probably won't do anything to further notify people who haven't added wanted discs. I've changed it to where it is really obvious when they login if the disc doesn't have wanteds. Plus I could imagine a scenerio where someone might actually want to not have wanteds if they haven't made a wish list. in this case they woudn't want to get emails about it.

Search by member is a great idea. I am thinking that on a disc detail page I will put a link something like "View all discs for this member"

I'm also planning on enabling users to offer more than one disc in exchange for higher value discs.

I wasn't able to finish updating the DB of discs last night. Will do it tonight.

although there's not a wanted discs section per se, you can see all the discs of people looking for a valk by tieing a generic disc as a wanted and then clicking the automatch button next to your valk. this essentially says "show me every disc available for trade where the trader is looking for a valk."

I think I have finally found a solid solution to enable all of us to choose to trade and/or sell discs. The money would go directly from seller to buyer without me needing to get involved in the transaction.

Does this sound like something great? Being able to sell your discs as well as trade? The only charges would be from the service itself which looks to be around 3-5% depending on amount. Seems better than you could do on eBay but I need to check to make sure.

assuming you have a matching disc (as detailed here - http://www.discaroo.com/how-it-works.asp) you would have a button at the bottom of the page with the details about the other guy's disc (like http://www.discaroo.com/w/id/607/Ching/Not-Specified/JuJu/Not-Specified/disc-detail.asp).

if you mean how do you contact someone after they have asked about a trade with you - it wasn't possible until tonight. now when you get an email requesting a trade you can reply to it and it will go to the person who initiated the trade. i have decided, for at least the near term, to not enable a buy/sell option as I have gotten some feedback (which I believe) that says it may lead to the ruin of the trading portion of the site. People will just want money. The truth is that I couldn't offer the service for much less than you could sell on ebay anyhow. I wouldn't charge anything but you would still have paypal fees.

For now I am going to spend my limited time working on making the trading (which is really the original part of the site) work well. Once this is done I may revisit selling but would need to be convinced that it wouldn't lead to a lot less trading as this is what the site is about.

Sellers should understand that you cannot really sell anything on Discaroo. Where it asks you for your sale price and has a $ sign, that's just false advertising. You are not selling for $. You're trading your disc for someone else's Discaroo Electronic Funny Money. Discaroo Electronic Funny Money is worth 70 cents on the dollar if you have a minimum of 150 of them and then multiply that by your % confidence that the operator of Discaroo will actually have dollars if you ever want to cash out.

Fortunately I only spent $8.46 learning that lesson.

steveschlange
Nov 17 2008, 08:08 PM
Bruce,

Wow thanks for effectively calling me a scam artist. I appreciate that.

First off, right next to where you list your disc price it says "NOT USD."

Secondly, I don't know how you spent $8.46 and feel ripped off. Did you buy a disc and not receive it? More likely you sold a disc thinking you were going to get cash for it. I am sorry you didn't realize it was quasi cash (although it's very clear from the FAQ and popup helps). You could still use the money to buy a disc and you are out nothing.

The purpose of creating Discaroo Dollars was not to scam people as you put forth. Rather it was to make it possible for any person to get any disc. Previously you had to have what someone else was looking for in order to get their disc. Now you can use the Discaroo Dollars generated from your own disc sales (or paypal) to get anything you want. It's just another way for people to get the plastic they want.

The other purpose is to make the site at least semi viable as a means of buying me a couple tacos every week. I've invested tons of time over the last year building the site up to what it is and don't think it unreasonable to build something into the system to get something back out.

The site is not ebay and is not meant to be used as such (again, read the FAQ).

Sorry you feel burned but I sure would have appreciated an email or PM before you make unfounded accusations on a public message board.

I'd call on karma but I don't believe in it.

Everyone should understand that in spite of everything written there to the contrary, you cannot sell a disc on discaroo. You can only trade it for funny money. The funny money unit is not worth a dollar. It is worth 70 cents if you ever have 150 of them. Otherwise it is worthless, except if you can find someone else who wants a bunch of them instead of a disc.

The whole system depends on users not understanding these facts. Currently nearly all of the users are pricing their discs as if a Discaroo was worth a $. I'm not sure what its worth, but by definition it isn't worth more than 70 cents ever, and for most users its not worth anything except the false belief of other users that it is worth something.

Discaroo is no different than if I gave you Monopoly money for your disc with the promise that if you ever get 150 of them, and I'm still around, I'll give you $105.

I'm glad you eliminated the use of the dollar sign and put a big disclaimer there, but don't act like you didn't do this in the past few days. And even now, nothing in your disclaimer tells anyone that a discaroo is worth 70 cents if you have 150 of them.

bruce_brakel
Nov 20 2008, 06:01 PM
Oh, and if you're buying any Tacos with the money you are generating selling Discaroo, what money will you have to redeem Discaroo if anyone does want to cash out.

Dude, that is so totally a scam.

Discaroo is fine for people who want to trade discs for Monopoly money. I doubt that most of the people on that website understand that that is what they are doing.

steveschlange
Nov 20 2008, 07:12 PM
First off, the only reason I am continuing to respond to Mr. Brakel is that I don't want the last response in this thread to be his and me not appear to answer his accusations thereby making them seem possibly true.

So, for today's tiring battle that I really don't have time to fight, my response is:

You say "I'm glad you eliminated the use of the dollar sign and put a big disclaimer there, but don't act like you didn't do this in the past few days." The facts are that the entire Discaroo Dollar system was implemented on the site last Friday so it's all brand new and there's no way I could act like it wasn't if I wanted to.

Again Mr. Brakel, the point of Discaroo Dollars was to facilitate the trading of discs (read the FAQ to understand why). If you want cash you have come to the wrong place. The point is to get plastic not cash.

You say, " I doubt that most of the people on that website understand that that is what they are doing. " I would have to disagree with you here as you are the only person up in arms about the Discaroo Dollar. I will agree that the implementation was not perfect and it could have been misleading for the first couple of days. However, that is no longer the case.

You also claim that I won't have the money to cash anyone out should they want to. I haven't spent any of the money earned through the site but again you miss the point- even if I should skip town with the millions of dollars I've made off the site people can still trade those Discaroo Dollars for plastic which is the point in the first place. You may be appalled to know that in the first days of Discaroo Dollars I had no cashout option at all! And one more time, that's because cash is not the point of Discaroo - plastic is. In effect we are trading our discs for Discaroo Dollars which we can then use to buy the disc we really want. It opens up the trading system a lot this way.

Finally, since you seem to hate the site so much, why don't you just not use it and leave the other thousand users (myself included) who get what the site is really about alone?

mrkulp
Nov 20 2008, 09:32 PM

just use regular cash

steveschlange
Nov 21 2008, 11:37 AM
Frank,

You are understanding correctly and, yes, you can just pay cash but it will be outside of the system. I am fine with this though, people do it pretty regularly.

I've spent a lot of time looking into using real cash but it just isn't feasible and actually can't be done with paypal. Amazon web services has something that can do it but the programming language is not one I know or have time to learn for one project. Passing money between a site and a user is easy, passing it between two users while tracking the transaction with a web site is not.

I shouldn't say it can't be done with paypal, it could be hacked but it would be a nasty implementation and certainly not what it was intended for.

mrkulp
Nov 21 2008, 11:52 AM
So I pay you $100 then trade those $100 for discs to someone else and then they cash out (assuming they generate an extra $50) and only get $70 of my $100. That doesn't sound good at all for the seller.

also don't these two things contradict each other (from the FAQ):

Discaroo Dollars (DDs) are a type of quasi-cash created as a means to allow ANY person to get ANY disc on Discaroo. Each DD is valued equivalent to $1 USD.

Yes. Anytime you have more than $150 Discaroo Dollars you may request to cash out at the rate of .70 cents USD per 1 Discaroo Dollar. Please contact us via email if you want to do this.

wouldn't that make them valued at $.70 not $1?

It's hard to take anyone who writes scrEwBay seriously.

To Discaroo:

I was asking about ASP.net because I am messing around with it and was wondering what type of success you had with it. Does ASP have any scalability problems?

Also it does seem messed up that the seller loses 30% of their profits from a disc.

steveschlange
Nov 21 2008, 01:02 PM
Thanks stack.

The reason they lose 30% is that between passing the money through paypal I am estimating that I will lose 10% on average. Most of the money made off the site in the last week has been under $10 purchases. For such small purchases the paypal fees are high. Anything under $4 and I am paying more than 10% in fees. The other 20% is for my time and a little insurance that I didn't do bad math AND to discourage people from using the site to make money.

The dead horse I keep beating is that the point is to get plastic not money. Therefore, I am discouraging people (with the 70% thing) from cashing out for money and instead want to see them use the funny money to get discs.

.net is the bomb. It's way better than asp in nearly every way. I've never known it to have scalability problems assuming you aren't using an Access DB.

From another DG website, watch out for these two guys.

I made the mistake of making a few trades on Disc-a-Roo and got bitten. Just an FYI for everyone here and if anyone in PA recognizes the names I appreciate the help. Someone has setup multiple fictitious names on DaR and is leaving Positive feedback for themselves and scamming traders. I only got taken for one disc (better than a couple other guys) but I hate getting ripped off. The two usernames I know are "MRbig" and "Dynasty15" and the two names attached are Jack Felter and Tyler Frederick. I have no Idea if these are real names or not (one may be). Discs were shipped to Bellwood, PA (near Altoona). That's all I know so if you venture to other trade sites or get an offer from a new person here check first.

steveschlange
Dec 01 2008, 02:38 PM
I believe the real name is Tyler Frederick based on the fact that this is the name in the older copies of the database. This means he recently changed it to the Jack name. I also think the address is now a fake although I have the real one (Altoona).

As the Discaroo FAQs say clearly - this is mail fraud and if I think we have a case against them I will pursue it if they remain uncommunicative. I am currently trying to contact them to get things resolved.

Check that feedback folks. It should be strong and it should be varied (not all from the same users, same times etc.). When it doubt - don't do it.

I'm the one that encountered this(these) guy(s). I have made numerous trades on DaR, DGR & PDGA and have had the misfortune of twice running into dishonest people on DaR. DiscARoo was helpful in the first matter and eventually it was mostly resolved. I hope the same for this but mostly want to help put an end to the dishonest people who make regular traders wary of online transactions. I have traded over 30 times on DaR and even more than that on DGR so it really is just a few people making it tough on everyone. I'm usually a DGR(discgolfreview) trader but venture to DaR when looking for specific items - always good to have a backup.

As far as the DAR $ - I understand the concept and think it can be useful to make trades happen between multiple people. I look at it as taking a video game to Gamestop to trade in for Store credit - Only with plastic. I think the only potential issue is whether or not every trader understands how it works before accepting a trade. I've got a couple going on right now so we'll see if the other party really understood.

Thanks for the work put into the site and the help when "situations" do arise.
