This past weekend the Texarkana Disc Golf Association hosted a small cookout at Alex Smith Park in Dodridge, AR (20 miles outside Texarkana). Our county judge expressed some interest in installing a course here to increase the overall usage of the park. To show him that we mean business, we designed an 11-hole temp course (as that was the number of baskets we could muster up between all the club members) in hopes that he would come out and see our progress. Unfortunately, the judge didn't show, but those who did had a great time playing a course that was MUCH different than the other one we have in town (which is mostly flat and open).
The park itself looks like it was made for a DG course...lots of elevation, tons of woods, a few open areas here and there for variety, a small creek, and it's on a lake (which may or may not be figured into the course design). I took some photos of all but one hole and uploaded them here (more to come): Alex Smith Temp Course Photos (http://flickr.com/photos/19186413@N06) Most of these holes are fairly short, but the parks department did a lot of clearing the day before the event, so now we have much more room for longer, more challenging holes.
This is still in the beginning phases, so we don't have any idea when this will be discussed by the city or county...but we do plan on having another temp. course mini/tournament in the coming months. We'll have a full 18-hole layout if we can gather that many baskets, so if anyone from the surrounding area is interested in coming out one weekend, please PM me or email me at rpappas@verticalag.com so I can keep in touch.
This is all very exciting for us Texarkansans and hopefully for the whole Ark-La-Tex area! It would give us all another challenging course to play, and for us locals it will allow us another option for play without having to travel 2-3 hours.
