I love discraft and throw it almost exclusively, except of the Sidewinder. What discraft disc flies like a sidewinder, real understable.

I've been recommending the SS Avengers to the players I used to recommend the Sidewinder. They've been happy with the SS Avenger. The Spectra is the other Discraft disc in that stability category.

6th... I love throwing the SS on a hard hyzer line and watching it roll over but come back at the end... plus they do make great rollers even when brand new!

Avenger SS indeed...but for something a little faster and flippy (with super glide) try a beat or first run Rogue.

One problem - they don't make the discs you are mentioning in lighter weights. One of my favorite drivers is a 150g Sidewinder, followed by a 155g Valkyrie and a 160g Sidewinder. What does Discraft have that compares to these lighter understable discs?

Nov 08 2007, 05:32 PM
The lighter weight is to make the said mold more under stable correct? In the Avenger SS mold you dont need a lighter mold because max weight is already under stable :D

I throw Rogues right now but will be trying out the SS Avenger as soon as I get to Florida and I can test it in some warm weather because my MI golf days come to and end in about a week!!! But I have seen the SS do some AMAZING things!!!

Pimp, SS should be less stable than the Rogue. Commit to the shot and watch in amazement. ;) Sadly i can not make the PC in FLA this year(The list of players to attend all of them is getting smaller), but i'll see you there in '08! :p

I know for a fact im sticking an SS in the bag for hole 8 at USDGC next year!!! McCabe had a PUTT at 2 with one of his SS rollers on that hole!!! And yes the SS is much less stable than my Rogues I cant wait to really test the SS the new Pulses and the Nate Doss Surges in Florida!!!

Discraft has lighter weights, you just might have to look harder to find them. I carry a 160g ss Avenger and a 164g Spectra in my bag. Your welcome to try either one when you see me on the course.

i just got ahold of a 150 surge. i throw a SS for long s shots, but this 150 surge does a pretty good job as well, you just have to throw it at 1/2 strength. both make great turnover discs too.

I think i sold out my 150 Surges at Byron but maybe there are one or two left. Downwind I was throwing these farther than a 168 FLX Surge. Upwind they are flippy. I think the Avenger SS is flippier than a 150 Surge and more like a Sidewinder than a 150 Surge.

isnt that the division you got yourself beat in last week?
and for the record, i dont play the womens division.... there are too many women that would put me to shame.
back to the subject, yea the 150 surges are more less like the sidewinder both in mold and at low speeds, but if you are looking for a disc that will give you the long s curves or giant turnovers, both will do.

Some things are just too weird. I throw the Z avenger as an over stable into the wind disc and you're telling me the SS version flies like a Sidewinder? That's just plain strange.
The Z Express is comparable but not as long as the Sidewinder. It is also slightly less stable. The X express is even less stable.
Why not throw a Sidewinder? I have to laugh whenever someone says I'm not throwing those guys discs anymore, especially having done it myself. Innova does some dumb stuff, so does Discraft, Gateway etc. The only company I've not seen do this kind of dumb stuff is Millennium (and some of the smaller guys but give them time). Just use the Sidewinder. If you're really embarrassed, take off the wrapper with acetone and tell everyone it's a Z Surf, the new disc from Discraft...

The SS Avenger really is that understable. When Erich suggested I recommend the SS Avenger to people looking for a Sidewinder substitute I tried them both out at the football field. I cannot throw really understable stuff much at all. These were equally useless for me. But for people who throw with more hyzer angle and need that flip-to-flat action, the SS Avenger is right there with the Sidewinder.
A lot of IOS players are switching to Discraft where they can simply because of economics. Because Discraft is so much less expensive to buy, we price it that much lower than Innova. Smart amateurs can effectively boost their payout 50% by choosing Discraft instead of Innova. I suppose moronic drama queens could too. We don't discriminate against low functioning thespians.
I'm constantly getting, "What does Discraft have I can throw instead of a Firebird or Orc or Sidewinder or whatever?" The people I've been steering to the SS Avenger for the Sidewinder have been happy customers. I've been really happy with how fast the SS Avengers have been moving.

The Avenger and Avenger SS are not even close to each other. Not quite 180 degrees apart but close if you compare the Z Avenger to the ESP Avenger SS. But then I don't think a beat X Avenger can be compared to a Z Avenger either.

I just recently switched over to the ESP Avenger SS as my roller. I used to roll with an X-Xpress, but found the SS to be a much longer disc for rolling. The SS seems more top to bottom symmetrical than the Xpress.
And I would say that the SS is a fair comparison to a Sidewinder stability-wise. Speed-wise I think the SS may be a touch slower, but has better glide.

I couldn't agree more. It has become a work horse in my bag for big rollers, huge s shots and anhyzers. When brand new I've notice that it can do the duties of the Xpress, XL, and your perfectly seasoned "S-Bomb" disc. Very beginner friendly too.

Do they make the SS Avenger in weights between 150-160g? That's what I need in order to get enough airspeed to flip'em up. Otherwise, they're no good to me.

I throw anything that works for me and haven't found a disc to replace a 150g sidewinder. I've only got around 300' of distance so the 150g isn't really flippy for me. The only Avenger SS I have is 171. Somebody said they have a 160, but I haven't seen them in the 150's at all. I believe that is the equivalent, but the jump from 150 to 170 make the disc much more stable. It is similar to a 170g Sidewinder though.
I have a couple 150g surges and they appear quite a bit more stable than the sidewinder (not a suitable replacement). Not a bad disc though.
From my searches, Innova has the most (or at least well known/thrown) lightweight plastic (150g). I throw the Valkyrie, Teebird, Sidewinder in 150g. I used to throw the Wraith too, but when they came out with the Champ, you can throw a low 160's and it still has some stability to come back.
Discraft did a 150g XL and XS, but one of them never made it to production. I have a 150g Talon for my overstable disc. They have the 150g Flick, too, but it's too fast and overstable for me.
I'd stick to the Sidewinder unless you found a 150's Avenger SS.
A friend of mine really likes the 150g Star Valkyrie (gets a little more distance than Sidewinder).
