Is this the reason for no Marshall Street Disc Golf tournament in 2008?
StevenDodge
Oct 28 2007, 10:52 AM
No. This is not the reason that the MSDGC won't be happening. In fact, it is the exact opposite - the Open is happening because there is no MSDGC.
Jason and I discussed the MSDGC occuring in 2008 a month or so before the 2007 MSDGC and it was decided that we would not run it again. At that point, I started trying to figure out how to capture some of the magic we had created in another big event here in Leicester. The Open at Maple Hill is the creation I have come up with. I suspect Jason will create another special event too - we'll just have to wait and see.

Wondering if I should request my time off of work now for the Maple Hill Open...It's really enticing to get to play Airplanes twice and finally have the ratings count. I keep losing out on 1050+ rounds :)

There's the long term goals, and there's also the issue of people being slobs. I was told that every year Jason would reportedly spend a week after the MSDGC filling up a large dumpster full of trash left where people camped and partied on his property. Cleaning up after people gets REAL old, REAL quick. http://www.panthersplanet.net/style_emoticons/default/thumbsdown.gif

there was a good amount of discussion about this @ the after party at this past years MSDGC. At that time Jason was very doubtful about a 08 msdgc, but did talk about having a bigger + better one the year after.
Myself and others tried to convince him to do a scaled-down version of the MSDGC, but he was having nothing of that.
while I am sure I will enjoy myself @ The Open, I don't think it will be as much fun as the MSDGC. hopefully after a break(08) the MSDGC will be back.
after watching the DVD I cannot wait to get back there, when's the next tournament?

Hi Luke,
We can't wait to see your smiling mug in our neck of the woods, Jason will be concentrating on the party and camping this year and I will be executing the tournament (and finding sponsors - hint hint). I've got no clue what he has planned for us this year, but I suspect Pyramids is going to be rocking and much of the MSDGC magic will be preserved. A month ago I was not so sure, but now it is all falling into place - and we've still got plenty of time to muck things up and put them into place again.

OK I just heard that this thing has filled 6 months in advance for the normal people wanting to play open. That raises the question of why the registration was started so early before people can make plans to attend? I never liked the fact you have to sign up for the USDGC within 30 days because many people just cannot commit to the event so early.
So why is it that registration was opened in January for an event in July? Also why is the PDGA signup the only way to get in and charging $7.50? If I fork out the cash now can I get it back (including the $7.50) if I decide I can't go next month?
The PDGA schedule is moronic BTW. Oh and that is not a personal attack.

you've never ran a tournament have you? this gives them money, a guaranteed number of players, etc. If I ran a tournament I would love to have it filled 6 months ahead!
also clearly enough people can make the plans- or they are like me and registered because they refuse to miss it, and will plan anything else around those dates :)

Well considering the response they have gotten they could have opened registration 3 months ahead of time knowing that they would have the tournament fill. It is going to suck when players go to sign up after the "off season" just to be told it is full 4 months in advance. Heck I may have to take Sandal dude up on his offer now but I will only do so if he can get the cash back if I were to find out I cannot attend.

Hi Matt, I just watched Thank You for Smoking and I'll try to answer as best I can.
1. Registration was opened on January 1st for two reasons - to demonstrate to sponsors that this event is loved and followed, and because I, the TD, decided to open it up now. It has kind of become a tradition and I hope we sell out on January 1st next year. Waiting til the second to sell out is downright embarassing! :o
But to answer your real question, there are about 50 Pro Open spots reserved for Qualifiers and Touring Pro card holders. The tourney is not really sold out, just the first come first served spots. Scroll to the bottom of this page for more details:
http://www.maplehillopen.com/players_players.html
2. Online registration. The fee comes from the $5+ credit card processing charges and a couple bucks to maintain the site. Only online because there would no way of figuring out which check was mailed first.
3. The schedule is a bit screwy to me too. I dislike seeing the NT hop all over the place too. This is one of the reasons for the recent formation of a new NT Committee to help guide the NT in 2009. This committee is made up of two player reps (Feldberg, J. Reading), two NT TDs, two BoD members and me.
All input is wanted. Hope to meet you in July.
Steve.

I hope to be there as well but I am worried that it will be filed before I can commit to going. My touring schedule this summer isn't just up to me and could be up to as many as 5 guys which makes this one tough to make if only two of us sign up.
If you can talk Bunnel into going my chances go up 30% to 80%. Talk double G into goign and touring this summer and it is now 98%. If you talk Nikko into going it goes back down to 82%. :D
Anyway I really want to play but I am a broke college student now and I am having a hard enough time trying to get enough money for the upcoming TX events in the next month since they will all fill early and I will be unable to use my previous winnings to pay for the next event as I usually.

I signed up Jan 2nd last year, when I was a 980 rated player, and took 8th. This place rewards great shots. Plus you simply have to come see the course(s), camping at Pyramids could be it's own weekend!
