Disc Golf Tournament
Wednesday, October 31
Knob Hill Community Park
One round of 18 holes
Pro and Am divisions
$5 Entry Fee
6:30pmRegistration
6:50pmBrief Players Meeting
7:00pmShotgun Start
Bring a small or medium sized Jack-o-Lantern and receive a free glow stick! Last year, we had several carved Jack-o-Lanterns which we placed atop the baskets during the round. Who will have the coolest design this year? We'll be taking photos of the pumpkins, so let's see some creative carving!
Glow golf discs can be used for this event, however, the miniature glow sticks or LED fishing lights work even better. These lights can be found in the fishing departments at Dick's Sporting Goods, Dunhams Sports, Cabelas as well as some Wal Marts. Easily attached to the top of the disc with packing tape, these little lights make it easier to find your disc at night than during the day!
More details to follow on this ghostly contest, however, mark your calendars now!

There is only 1 rule for this event...........NO FLASHLIGHTS ALLOWED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It screws up your night vision.
Anyone caught using a flashlight will be beat over the head with it and then have a pumpkin forced onto there head.

I'm going to carve tonight... hopefully they turn out as sweet as I think they will.
also, I think we may have a good turnout because I had to go to [censored] Sporting Goods in the Pittsburgh Mills after two Walmarts and a KMart being completely sold out of both leds and mini glow sticks.

Last night, I purchased a few of the battery lights from Cabela's ($3 ~ yellow) and Dick's Sporting Goods ($4 ~ red), so I'll have about a dozen or so I'll be able to sell if anybody is looking for them. There are other colors available, however, I think red is the brightest, followed by yellow (red hurts your night vision the least).
These battery operated LED lights are made to fit into a bobber or on the end of a fishing rod. You can turn the light on or off and they last for about 20 hours total. Check your local fishing department for this product.
Of course, Craig is giving a limited number of glow sticks for jack-o-lanterns brought to the tournament (first come, first serve). These tiny glow sticks are the type where you snap 'em and they glow for about 8 hours. These work well, however, they're still not as bright as the LED battery lights.
Forecast is looking good for Halloween, folks! Have you carved your pumpkins, yet? :D

It's an unfortunate artifact of the software censor. It's unfortunate that message board users chose to continue to use the name of that Sporting Goods chain as a personal attack and so we had to add it to the list.

Hey, so I have a couple questions about sticking lights on the discs:
I generally don't throw Champion (can't get a decent grip or something)... will my Star/ESP discs be usable with the lights on the underside? If I use these opaque discs, will I have to stick the light on top? If you stick a light on top, does it change the flight?
In the meantime, maybe I'll take out my small collection of Champion discs and see if I have better luck. :P
gotcha
Oct 15 2008, 07:57 AM
Hi Teresa,
You can attach a light to the top any disc using clear packing tape and you will notice little, if any, change in the flight characteristic of the disc. There's two reasons you want to tape the light onto the top of the disc: 1) visibility and 2) less chance of it coming off as the disc lands and slides across the ground.
We will have clear packing tape on hand for players to use, however, players will need to provide their own lights. I stopped by Dick's Sporting Goods in Cranberry last night and they were out of the LED lights. I'll try some other fishing departments at other stores.....maybe Cabella's in Wheeling as they always have a large selection.

Oct 15 2008, 09:17 AM
Teresa,
if you use champion plastic, like I did last year, you can use clear DUCT TAPE and adhere the light to the bottom with no problems. I carried 3 discs with lights (Teebird, Sidewinder, Buzz) and all three never lost a light and were so easy to see the entire time. Its surprising, but discs with the LEDs are easier to find than a disc thats thrown during daylight. Kinda cool.
anywho, Jerry's way and the way I described both seem to work well. Knowing what we know, regardless of method, I would use the clear duct tape. I'll have a whole roll with me that night.
only true advice I have is DO NOT MISS THIS... best, most fun, coolest round of disc golf you will play all year hands down!

FYI
I was in Wheeling, WV today and I purchased over a dozen LED lights from Cabela's. I also picked up another six lights from Gander Mountain in Washington, PA. I will have these lights available for sale for $5 each......first come, first-serve on Friday night at Knob Hill! These lights are reusable for about 20+ hours......red and yellow are the colors I'll have on hand. Don't worry about packing tape to adhere the lights to your discs.....we gotcha covered on that! :)

For those who chose not to play our annual Huckin' Halloween glow tournament, you missed one of the most fun events of the year! 49 players came out to enjoy a round of glow golf with friends. The weather was absolutely perfect.....temps in the low 50's, no wind in the air and no dew on the ground. There were lots of great jack-0-lanterns this year, but the winner receiving the most votes for best carved pumpkin went to Ross Schweitzer and his three wolves (Hole 9).
Special thanks to Craig McCloud for yet another ghostly good time at Knob Hill.... :)
