Apologies if this is posted in the wrong area.

I am trying to put together a tournament that would require players to play both disc golf and ball golf in the same event. Does anyone have any experience with such an event?

Details are still to be determined. The event would be held at an executive-length ball golf course that also has disc golf tees and baskets (Emerald Isle, Oceanside, CA). The event would be set up as a charity fundraiser, with friendly competition as the goal. It is unknown what range of skills for both sports players would have, so one expectation is that some sort of handicapping might be necessary.

Comments, ideas?

Do it , and be sure to have a long drive contest!
That would be fun!

I've played in one and seen a couple more. Decent ball golfers will generally handle really good disc golfers in my experience at least, and handicapping would be necessary for fair competition. Hacker ball golfers vs decent to good disc golfers is probably pretty fair.

I think he means that all players play both sports.

Emerald Isle doesn't have a fairway long enough for a ball golf long drive contest. (Par 56 with two short par 4s)

If its a charity event, I'd consider going for a scramble format. Either a 2-man scramble or a 4-man scramble. The teams that win will probably have a mix of ball and disc golfers or a couple that dabble in both.

We've been trying to do a Trigolfalon with some of my geezer buddies but haven't pulled it off yet. The plan is to play 9 holes at a par 3 ball golf course, then 18 holes of DG and 18 holes of miniature golf. We already do a computer trigolfalon on Superbowl Sunday every year when we play Links ball golf, Innova disc golf and Miniature golf on my computer rig before the football game.

Just trying to get useful info out of you. ;)

If it's a team thing it's interesting because you have to figure out how to stack your team between ball and disc golfers.

Do we have enough ball and disc golfers to pull this off in Texas ?

We have a few courses next to ball golf courses don't we ?

Yes, we want all players to play both formats.

I have experimented a little bit with some convenient guinea pigs. We had two mixed groups made up of avid disc golfers (Myself and my son) and avid ball golfers (my girlfriend and her four sons, two who are on the high school golf team). We played 18 holes, alternating holes between ball and disc golf. Our scores were relatively competitive and it was fun to combine the two games, but I can see that players would probably need to be divided into divisions based on which sport they favored. I wouldn't alternate holes again, but instead play 9 or 18 holes in one format before switching.

What I'm trying to figure out is whether to set it up as singles or teams, scratch or scramble (for teams) or handicapped for singles), and then what type of scramble or handicap format.

Thanks for the input so far.

We did something like this in the late 80's in conjunction with Bull Run golf (Virginia) course which was adjacent to Bullrun Park which had a Putt-Putt and Disc golf course...we called it "Golf,Golf,Golf" and you played one round of Ball golf, One round of Disc Golf and one round of Putt Putt.

Best Score in the end won.

It was alot of fun...fortunately none of us was very good at all three...so the ball golfers were nullified during the DG round and vice versa.

We did this at the Players Cup a few Years ago.We used teams and you had to alternate Disc or ball! The main rule restriction was that the putting greens were considered OB for discs! You had to hole out with a ball. This determined the strategy..

If you could not land a disc on the green, and you had to hole out with a ball, then you could not be truly alternating between balls and discs.

around here it's called the old "ball and chain."

That is where part of the strategy came in .True ,once the green was reached it was ball only So you had to figure out how to get within striking range of the green with a ball or waste a layup shot with a disc because ,the greens were OB for discs. It made deciding which way to start out to clear the obstacles and still hit the green with a ball in the fewest shots a challenge .It was fun.

I've been kicking this idea around as well. We have a ball golf course fairly close to the dg course, so it would have to be separate rounds.

I think with a course like Emerald Island, a scramble would be great. 2 ball golfers and 2 disc golfers on a team. Lowest team score wins. Or do a version of 6/6/6. Bring your own team.

Makes me wish we had a ball/disc golf course close to me!

We did a charity event in Norfolk with ball golf and disc golf. We put everyone in two-person teams - one ball golfer and one disc golfer. First 9 holes ball golf. Second nine holes disc golf by placing baskets on the course we just played.

It requires that you have some idea of skill level for each person so you don't place your best ball golfer with the best disc golfer.

I like the idea of two-person teams and best shot. It's a well known format, which would reduce confusion. We would probably play two rounds, so one could be ball and one disc.

Since it's a charity event we would be selling mulligans, probably for a buck each. Prizes would mostly be by raffle, which usually reduces the cut-throat competitive angle.

I run a disc golf/ball golf tournament once a year here in Tulsa. Also run a Bowling/Disc Golf tournament during the fall/winter months using the modified stableford system.

It's a great way to raise money for an upcoming tournament.

I'm planning on doing one next year. We are going to play disc golf in the morning and then go to the ball golf course to our awaiting carts for the rest of the day. Two rounds of 18.
I would also like to see this done at the Masters Cup in the same format. I call it "The DeLa Double" since the ball golf course down the road is also called DeLaveaga. I think I can take Climo down!! :D

Sweet!

FYI: In the past we have played the Ball Golf in the afternoon. But next time we plan on teeing off in the morning. Depending on how many people you have playing the Pro Shop will let you to a shotgun start and you will finish your round faster. Shotgun starts in the afternoon are rare and most courses will not do that.

Plus it has gotten dark on us before and I think we can alleviate this if we play BG in the morning.

BOOOoooooooooo!

No ball golf in the morning. Start the DG rounds by 8:30 and BG can go off from noon to 1.

Thats what makes your B&G tournament so nice Mike, the last half of the day is spent on carts with beer. :D

To reverse it would screw it all up. ;)

I just can't imagine trying to drink on the ball golf course in the morning, then walking a disc round in the afternoon. Half the field around here would be DNF for the second round. :o:D

This just in: I got an e-mail this morning from FINAL 9 that said they will be having a ball and disc tourney on Nov 3. Ball golf at 8 a.m. with disc to follow at Orangevale. It will be a random draw doubles event. Should be fun.

Ron, did you play that last year or the first year? The first year we played that you could throw a putter onto the green, but not a mid or driver. The next time I do something like that I'm planning on making it legal to throw a roller onto a green, but not an air shot and to only allow each golfer two clubs of their choice (including a putter if that's one of their two choices.)

Hope to see you next month!

Des Moines has had an annual "sticks-n-discs" event for the last three years. The first two years we played at Grandview golf course, then Grandview dgc. Format was doubles, best shot. We also had an eliminator skins money game. THe only other money involved was greens fees and the carts. It was all about the fun. The ball golf course typically donated a couple free rounds that we used for a CTP and long drive, as I recall.

The key is to get yourself a ringer for the links round, then show 'em our sport in the afternoon. Make them believers.

MC,

I just finished the disc golf tourney on a ball golf in Bella Vista. They've got 8, 18-hole courses and I'm in with them now! Ordering permanents baskets for the course I just used at the next Board meeting. I'll pitch the combo tourney to them. Maybe a random draw for partners with half being ballers and half being discers.

Oh yeah, Monday Fish and I went to check out another course that has asked me to design them a course to host a tourney on. The Director of Recreation from another retirement village came and saw all of the residents so involved and immediately invited me to do the next tournament at his place. Sweet things in the future.

What's up, Heath!

Dude if you put on a ball/disc tournament consider me there. They are a freaking BLAST to play! I remember when you and Fish showed up to my first one and brought a case of THE BEAST for whoever puts up the highest score on one hole.

Good times!
