Hello all, this is an FYI to all Virginians and regional disc golfers that a new course is soon to be opening in Rocky Mount, VA, which is located in the Southwest portion of the state,, about 25 miles south of Roanoke and about 40 miles north of the NC border on US 220. This course will be a championship style course with multiple par 4's and couple of par 5's, and yes, there will be par 3s. Lead designer Mitch Hoeppner has really out-done himself on this track to say the least. We have all 18 holes cut out and are in the process of doing some final trimming and manicuring of the fairways and teeing areas. We are planning a major workday on Sautrday, October 20th, where we are going to rend a skid-steer loader, and an auger. We are hoping to get at least 8 people out to accomplish what we want to do, which includes, carring gravel to tees and placing, digging holes for benches, tee signs, and basket collar/sleeves. If interested, please email "[email protected]" (and thats a ZERO not an O) and I'll hook you up with directions. Please try and make it out so you can put your own love into what is going to be major disc golf destination in to not-so-distant future.

Hey Jeff. Won't be able to make this workday. (I will be at the Cranberry Disco workday in Yadkin County) It took almost no effort to bump this one back to the top though. :) Good luck on the course. Looking forward to making it up there.

BUMP!

A call to all.

Workday this Saturday, October 20th. We have rented a 2 man auger and a skid-steer loader. Plans for the day include getting all tee boxes filled in with gravel and crush, digging holes for signage, benches and basket collars, plus what ever else we figure out needs to be done.
If interested, PM me for directions.

UPDATE

Just got a call from bagger Greg Clemons. He was going down to check and see if our sleeves had arrived for the baskets, and he was happy to report that the sleeves, along with 18 brand new DisCatchers, were on site. We will be working on planting sleeves this weekend but I can forsee some basket assembly workdays next weekend. Stay tuned.

Hello disc golf world, just thought I'd let eveyone know that the 18 hole course is VERY near completion here in Rocky Mount, VA, or as they call it around here, The Moonshine Capitol Of The World. All 18 holes are in the ground, tees are set, just some final cutting on a couple of holes is all that is needed.
The course is proving the be very challenging. It was designed by Mitch Hoeppner, who had a hand in the design of the courses in Appomattox, VA and Christiansburg, VA, but this new one is his baby. It plays to a par 62, with 4 par 4's and 5 par 3's on each side.
A great mix of terrain, including tight(but fair) wooded shots, some chances at throwing some wide open air-shot bombs, and elevation is a factor on alot of the holes. The woods are simply beautiful, and tough. All of the fairways in the woods have this running cedar covering the ground which is real cool looking, but the fairways are "fair" as they are suppsoed to be. So if you pure your tee shot, your in good shape, miss off the tee and good luck. Tees for the wooded holes are gravel base with crush and run on top fenced in by natural hardwood timbers, and are generous in size, so anyone can run up on these. The open holes play over mowed-grass fairways, which the county keeps mowed all summer. A simple landscaping timber is marking these, and we'll have space to move them around to avoid a future mud-bog.

:cool::D:eek: ;) :p
But now for the BIG news, we are happy to be hosting an event on Saturday, Jan. 19 , our first ever tournament . This event will be part of the very popular BRAWL (http://www.piedmontdgc.org/) series, check link for detials. This is the southernmost event on the schedule, a mere 1 - 1.5 hours north from PTI airport in the Triad, so maybe we'll get the first ever migration of NC players into the series, who knows?

Not sure what all is going on here, but recieved this through Chuckster and the NCHGT mailing list. Everything I've heard about this course is good. Lets give them some support:

Just wanted to let people know whats coming up at the Sontag disc golf course in Franklin County VA.
This coming Sat. March 29Th there will be a lot going on. We are having the official course opening. Franklin county parks and rec. have done so much to promote this weekend. They sent home flyer's with every kid in Franklin county announcing the grand opening. They order 100 custom Franklin county stamped discs. I was told that some of the discs are being given to the kids, and some are going to be for sale. I believe they will be having free food. It's mainly geared towards the kids. What we need is as many golfers as possible to come out and give some demonstrations. I'm thinking about trying to organize some kind of long drive competition. Maybe have some kind of ace run, or a ring of fire. We just want to get alot of new players hooked. So if you can please come out this weekend. It should be alot of fun. All if this is getting started at 10:00 Sat. morning. If anyone wants to, a group of people will probably meet and play a round at 8:00. Probably singles unless enough people show up and people want to play doubles. Bring a new golfer with you.

In a previous email I said our doubles was going to be on Wed. nights. But i was informed that Christiansburg had doubles on Wed. So we moved our doubles to Tues. nights instead. They will be starting next Tuesday April 1st, and going every Tues night until fall time change. We will be teeing off at 5:30 pm. $5 entry fee plus a $1 optional ace pool. There is also alot of other doubles going on during the week. I was told that Appomattox has doubles on Mondays. We have Tuesdays here at Sontag. Christiansburg has doubles on Wednesday, and Vince has it on Thursdays in Bedford. I don't know there entry fees or start times or if they have started yet. If anyone knows, let me know, and I'll pass it along. Also if anyone wants me to promote their tournaments, let me know. I'll be more then happy to. It's always more fun when there is a lot of golfers. Oh yeah bring a new golfer with you.

On April 19Th we will be having our monthly tournament. There will also be an Antique Farm Days going on that day. It may interrupt a few holes. If so we will try to put up some temp holes. But either way we will still have it. Pro entry fee $10, Adv fee $7, and Am fee$5. $1 optional ace pool. Registration begins at 9:00, players meeting at 9:40. Tee time at 10:00 sharp. If you are cutting it close getting to an event call my cell and let me know, and I'll make sure you get in(919) 770-9968. Make sure you call before start time because I turn the phone off at start. Hope to see you out here for some of our events. Oh yeah bring a friend and a new golfer.

I still don't know alot of people around here yet and I don't have alot of email addresses. So please forward this to all your disc golfing friends. If you don't want to receive my emails, let me know and I'll take you off the list. Thanks

Keep throwin
Ronk
