I hope the tournament will fill up with all the best professionals in disc golf. It is true that we will be playing Hampton Park for 4 rounds. We may add a hole if necessary, there is certainly room for a 19th. The field limit will be initially set to 90 players. The official flyer is still being finalized.

If anyone is bringing their family and/or friends to the tournament, there are lots of activities happening around Charleston that weekend. James Island County Park has the Holiday Festival of Lights (link: http://www.ccprc.com/), Oteil and the Peacemakers and Blueground Underground are at the Pourhouse on James Island (link: www.charlestonpourhouse.com (http://www.charlestonpourhouse.com)), Christmas Parade (link: www.charlestonlowcountry.com (http://www.charlestonlowcountry.com)). Everyone (local or not!) should check out Sweet Olive in I'On (in Mt Pleasant). Lots of cool items for the interior, for the garden, and for the bath. Close your eyes and imagine....teeing off from underneath a HUGE live oak, 6-8' diameter. Your drive must pass through this tree's massive branches which snake over and under the flight path. About 150' out you cross, hopefully, a round cement pond with an O.B. sidewalk encircling it and a 30' geyser of a fountain right in the middle to shoot down your disc in flight. The far edge of the pond has a 5' cement wall, topped by a 4' iron railing, so if you're not high enough you fall back into the pond---O.B. Beyond that is a row of small trees and beyond that....the basket!

And there are 17 more holes to go!

Did I mention the wind?

In the past, the course has been set up on late Thursday or early Friday for practice.

xterramatt
Oct 15 2007, 03:21 PM
Lots of old majestic trees, palms, oaks, magnolias, monstrous crepe myrtles, and sawgrasses. Very rollable terrain on most holes, as well as some cool unique holes: the one described above, a mound island green with water if you are short, one where you tee from a gazebo to a tightened green, lots of low flat drive holes that are high enough to walk through but not much else.

This place is a lot of fun.

The host hotel is the Holiday Inn at Riverview
Hotel Front Desk: 1-843-556-7100

We have reserved 10 rooms for Fri and Sat night at a rate of $75. Just mention "disc golf" to get the discounted rate. This should be available starting tomorrow, 10/17, through 11/12. Reservations after 11/12 are not gaurenteed.

There are many hotels in the area that are a short drive and less expensive, search cheaptickets.com, $49 and up.

Innova and I will be setting the course up Thursday afternoon.

Directions: Take I-26 to exit #219 and go south on Rutledge Avenue 1.7 kilometers (about one mile). Turn right onto Cleveland Street, which runs into the park. This website has some pictures including the tree and geiser/fountain. (http://sciway3.net/outdoors/park-charlestonhampton-morephotos.html)

I would encourage anyone coming down to make it out to Trophy Lakes Friday for a round of golf in the afternoon to check out the changes we have made to the course. The guys that maintain the lake have cleaned it up like never before and it is beautiful. $5 to play and worth every penny.

We are waiting for 18 new baskets for our next great adventure in Charleston at the West Ashley City Park. This new course was designed by myself with some help from CDGC entourage. I am hoping it will be ready before the classic but that all depends on the shipment of the baskets.

51 reg'd so far! (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=7226)

and here's a potentially cool idea Peckham suggested (in reference to the 32.808399 foot painted circles around the baskets) ...

I have had an idea for some fun with painted circles.

Have a contest each round for the most drives that land on or in the circle. Have a little box on the card, and remind everyone to mark them during the round.

Cool stat, and a cool way to give away a prize. Most accurate driver?

Either have a winner for Pro and Am each round, or a winner by division each round. Say, First round: all ams except Advanced and Advanced Masters, Second: Advanced, Third: All Masters, Fourth: Pros

Something like that would be a fun side challenge. Plus, if there are 20 holes, it's easy to figure out how well you can drive INSIDE THE CIRCLE. Count up your marks and multiply by 5.

I am coming with the INNOVA crew.

I suggested to take it one step further and use it like an ace pool (separate of the real thing)... people put in 1, 2, 4 bucks and the overall winner takes all

i think a CTP award would also be fitting... just award it to the overall AM/PRO and CHICA with the highest # inside the circle

Dana took the 9 baskets that were in a field and created a nice 9 hole course at Locklier Park. I think it is a cool beginner friendly design that has tee markers and a variety of required shots. Have you played this new design? It has been up since this Spring. I believe that DOD identification is required but rarely enforced.

The "C" tier event is looking more like a good possibility. Send in your registration and the list will keep growing. We have a nice field developing.

This is from Tradd (of the Charleston Rodenbergs)

Can someone inform Mel on the PDGA board that HYMAN's is probably the largest SCAM in Charleston, as far as food goes. Ingenious advertising and marketing skills, but the food is a waste. --This is coming from a local (me), who has had 2 good friends work there, who tell me their food isn't worth a crap compared to other restaurants.

My seafood recommendations while in Chucktown:
Hank's (downtown)

Vickery's (in Mt Pleasant, not downtown)

Hanks, Crab House and Hymans can all seat large groups and has large variety on their menus to accomodate everyone. I also would suggest Fleet Landing if you want to eat on the peninsula and it is off E Bay St on the harbour between Market and Cumberland Streets. We have been there with several large groups and they did a great job. It has a great bar and great views of the harbour, Patriots Point and the bridge from the deck. They also have there own parking lot and the market and Broad St are within walking distance. The website takes online reservations but if a cruise ship is in town the weekend of the tournament, every restuarant and bar will probably be busy in the market and Broad St area. Also across the street from Hampton Park on Rutledge is Granvilles which is alright and Moe's Crosstown Tavern. Moe's has really good bar food and a great crowd. If anyone goes to Moe's please let the staff know you are in town for the tournament. I found this link address for Fleet Landing, http://www.fleetlanding.net/index.php

The Chamber of Commerce must have told you that. I have memories of playing Hampton in a 35-degree, 20-mph-wind, rain. Sure, there's been shirtsleeve weather for the other 8 Classics, but I wouldn't put a money-back guarantee on it if I were you.

Everyone who was at that event keeps bringing that up, it must have left some deep scars. The one time the weather was bad in Charleston. Should have taken pictures, because the weather here is great.

So it looks like the normal 18 will be played and the 2 added holes will be the gazebo hole (which Ive never played but hear about with all the OB and stuff will that be the same?) and a hole before the fountain hole (Assuming that it will be back where the hole use to go to when it was a par 4?)

Any other changes on the normal 18?

mynameisJonas
Nov 26 2007, 12:58 PM
None. The only real change from the past 2 years is the 2 added holes. The gazebo is an oldie from what I have heard and it will be stringed off with generous OB. THe other is a cool hole we added to fit 100 people in the field and it is just before the fountain hole. It has a small fairway gap and plays anhyzer all the way to an open green area. It flows pretty well with the course, not much extra walking at all.

Everyone is getting their money's worth this year with 20 holes per round.

Several people have dropped out the last couple days. The list that I have up now is current as of this morning. I have some candidates but everyone on the wait list has backed out. I think we will have some people show up the day of and some that will probably not show up. Still a nice looking field.

Jonas, will you be serving breakfast at your house for all of us crashing there? I heard you told the ZZ no free food, which is why he bailed for the family in CT (Free beer and chicken). And can you put the missletoe away please? Jo-nanny-son tends to try to bait people to kiss him when he gets sauced, and with the long hair and all, it could make quite a scene at your place. Plus it makes me squeamish when Big Ant hits on Jo-Jo. :D

Be there tomorrow morning. First Hampton rounds in three years due to injuries the last two years. Salivating way too much.

We just finished playing a round. Pretty tough stuff. We had 6 in the group throwing multiple drives and stuff and it took just under 2 hours. I am hoping for 3 hour rounds this weekend but it will be close.

Parking Sat morning is going to be challenging. They said we should park on the streets outside the park. I am going to see if I can sneak in early. They are putting up chains at 7:00 AM that don't come down until 12:00. Last year we worked around it.

Great job Jonas and the guys from Innova, the course looks fantastic and I really like the gazebo hole and the hole across from the backgate of the Citadel before the big oak/fountain hole. I was also glad to see several people playing when I left earlier. Hopefully lots of people get by to play tomorrow.

Thanks, Jonas and everyone, especially including the crew from Innova. Running a full tournament is a big enough job---installing and removing a temp. course on top of it makes it a huge job.

The pace of play was remarkably good for an event with fivesomes. I was expecting huge backups and 4-hour rounds as the price to be paid for squeezing everyone into 4 rounds at Hampton.

Oh, and thanks also for scheduling the weather so well.
